Live: Samsung’s CES 2015 Press Event

We’re here at the Samsung’s 2015 CES press conference, eagerly awaiting the potential announcement of new phones, tablets, and televisions. Well, maybe not that last one so much, but we’ll take what we can get.

We’re having technical difficulties with our liveblogging software, but you can watch the live stream of the conference above.

Update: We may have a live blog up! Although, it may be worthless. Either way, we are giving it a shot!

Watch the Samsung CES 2015 press conference live stream right here at 5pm Eastern

The big one is upon us, folks. Samsung is readying their CES 2015 announcements, and they’ll be unleashing them all in a few short minutes. Thankfully you won’t have to miss out on any of it as the announcements are being aired live!

Samsung typically doesn’t launch many new smartphones at these shows, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of new tablets. But mostly, the company really likes to use this show to focus on their televisions and appliances, so we’ll have to see if there’s room for anything on the Android front. Only one way to find out. Stay tuned!

Watch Samsung’s CES Press Conference Live!

Screenshot 2015-01-05 16.59.10

Samsung is about to hit the stage in Las Vegas to show us some new toys that we’ll throw money at them for. Their show starts at 2 and should last about 45 minutes. So it won’t be super long. And we also don’t expect any flagship devices – like the Galaxy S6 – but we’ll be there and looking to see what they have in store for us this time around. Maybe Michael Bay will return and finish his speech from last year? As long as the teleprompter doesn’t break.

HTC unveils the low-cost Desire 320 handset for the UK and Germany

Lenovo unveils new Vibe Band wearable with an e-ink display

image

As the CES event is going on in full flow over at Las Vegas, Chinese manufacturer Lenovo has just unveiled a new smartwatch sporting an energy efficient e-ink display. The Vibe Band VB10 as it is known, can be customized extensively, giving it a unique look compared to rival offerings.

It is without a doubt, the best competitor to the Pebble Smartwatch in the market today and Lenovo will be mindful of that. The device has a 1.43 inch display with a pixel density of 240 PPI, which isn’t all that bad for a wearable. Since it’s using an e-ink panel, the visibility on the device will remain consistent, even in bright sunlight.

The body of the Vibe Band is metal and the straps can be interchanged according to the users’ liking. So fans will not be left wanting for more as far as customization is concerned.

The Vibe Band VB10 is made specifically for the U.S. market and will not be available elsewhere. Pricing will be set at $90 when the device reaches shelves sometime in April this year. It’s running a custom OS and is only compatible devices running Android 4.4 KitKat or above.

Given the price tag and the ability to do everything that the Pebble can, the Vibe Band VB10 has the potential to be the best smartwatch available in the market today.

Sony Opens Up Lifelog API To Developers Today For Integration With Third Party Apps

Sony Smartband AH-14

Back in September of 2014 Sony announced that they would be expanding and opening up their Lifelog API to third party app developers, and that day is finally here as they have just announced that the Lifelog API is now available for developers to take advantage of. Developers are now able to boost their apps with Lifestyle data, which will allow users to integrate the information collected from the senors in their smartphones and wearables and have it shared with compatible third party apps. In addition to opening up the API to developers and third party apps, Sony is also bringing Lifelog to the web, which will allow users of the service to log into their Lifelog account and overview their activity tracking data any time they want as long as they have a device with a web connection.

For developers, this opens up a range of possibilities for integrating useful data into their apps which would allow them to offer their users a more robust experience, like making recommendations on a place to eat based off of Lifestyle data gathered from the Life log app. That is only one such example of course, and the most obvious to us is that through Sony’s Lifelog app, fitness data that’s tracked could be fed into a third party health and fitness application, again, giving users a more robust experience.

With the Lifelog app tracking data like app usage, music usage, sleep and awake times, step length, BMR, height, weight and many other values, all of that data gets fed into the Lifelog platform data store which developers can then access that data through multiple endpoint categories like user profile, activity, and location. Sony has made it pretty simple to get started with the Lifelog API too. All you have to do is start by going to the Lifelog pages and then register your application. Sony states that after your app is registered you can start sending calls to the API immediately, so there’s no waiting period and you can get the ball rolling on integrating Lifelog data into your app whenever you’re ready. While this information is mostly useful for developers, it strikes a chord with the end user, like myself, who is a big fan of the Lifelog app and would love to see it integrated with more third party applications.

ASUS Rocks CES With The Low-Price, High-Spec ZenFone 2: 4GB RAM, Lollipop, And Flagship Looks Starting At $199

asthumb Despite some impressive tablet, laptop, and combination devices, ASUS has left its smartphones mostly in the budget and mid-range end of the pool. That changes with the Zenfone 2 announcement at CES: while the new device probably won't set the world on fire, it's a definite competitor to offerings from the likes of HTC, Samsung, and LG at an amazing price. The ZenFone 2 is the first phone anywhere to be equipped with 4GB of dual-channel RAM (on the high-end model), and the rest of the specs are no slouch either.

The ASUS ZenFone Zoom has a giant camera for 3X optical zoom

Asus is back at CES with another line of high-end ZenPhones. We already told you about the Asus ZenPhone 2, but the more interesting device may be the Asus ZenPhone Zoom. At first glance it looks a lot like the Nokia Lumia 1020. The reason for the giant camera bump is some crazy new technology.

Yes, I said optical zoom. Like a real camera.

The ZenPhone Zoom has a 13MP camera with a 10-element lens, 3X optical zoom, and optical image stabilization. It’s an impressive piece of smartphone camera technology. Asus raved about how far it can zoom and the photo quality, but we’ll have to test that for ourselves. Other specs include a 5.5-inch 1080p display.

The Asus ZenPhone Zoom will launch in Q2 of this year for $399. Are you interested?

DISH Announces $20 A Month Live TV Streaming Service Called Sling TV

Dish Network logo big

Streaming is the wave of the future in terms of consuming content, and DISH Network is hopping on board that train with their announcement of Sling TV, a streaming service that will cost consumers only $20 a month and allow them watch TV on a myriad of different devices including the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Amazon Fire TV, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, computers, and of course… TV’s. This is also not just streaming content like you might find on Hulu Plus, Sling TV will incorporate streaming of Live tv shows, which means accessible content like ESPN, ESPN 2, TNT, TBS, The Food Network and more.

Sling TV and DISH Network are joining other streaming services like HBO Go who is launching their own standalone streaming service this year for all its popular network shows, so it’s obvious that DISH realized adding a streaming service option for consumers was a smart choice. The service will also feature on-demand video programming along with the “best of online video” alongside all of the live content, and it apparently requires no commitment, no credit check, no contract, and no hardware installation(short of the installation of whatever device you’re streaming TV to)which should make this an extremely easy service for the average non tech savvy consumer to set up.

Sling TV will also reportedly be compatible with Google’s Nexus Player as well as Roku devices, so there is really is a very wide range of compatible devices, DISH is obviously trying to reach as many consumers here as they can. All of this content is great, but we don’t always get to view stuff right when it airs, and that’s where Sling TV’s 3-Day replay feature comes in, allowing subscribers to access some tv shows that have aired in the past three days without the need for DVR. DISH is also adding the ability to add on additional channel packs at a cost of $5 extra per month on top of the regular $20 price. The service will support local WiFi or mobile broadband internet connections, so if you have a big enough data package you can stream all the content that Sling TV will offer.

Live: Qualcomm’s CES 2015 Press Event!

Moving on from ASUS and I am here live at Qualcomm’s CES 2015 press event. I do not believe there is a live stream, nor do I know what is on the agenda, but it should be worth tuning in to. Qualcomm is the king right now, so when they speak about products or technology in general, we tend to listen.

Snapdragon 810 partners? A recap of 2014 and a look to 2015? Maybe something surprising? I guess we will find out.

I have a live blog below, which I will attempt to fill with commentary and images while riding solo.

The event starts at 12PM Pacific (3PM Eastern). Let’s do it!

Panasonic’s Big Priced And Big Camera Lumix CM1 Smartphone Is Coming To The US

By now we are all used to companies releasing camera based smartphones at smartphone events. However, that’s where Panasonic changed things up. Instead of going down the conventional methods, Panasonic decided to drop a smartphone at a camera event. This took a lot of people by surprise as Panasonic introduced their Lumix CM1 smartphone. With a smartphone dropping at a camera event (and especially one made by Panasonic), it is probably not too surprising to learn that the big selling point for this phone was its camera. In fact, the camera on the CM1 came with a 20MP camera with a one-inch sensor, which is typically more in line with what you find on high-end cameras. In addition to this, the CM1 also came with a f/2.8 Leica Lens adding to its value.

That was not all though. The rest of the specs were rather decent too. The CM1 offered a 4.7” 1080 display. Inside the CM1 was loaded with 2GB RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. In terms of memory, the CM1 comes with 16GB internal storage as well as a microSD card slot for additional storage. Not to mention the device came running on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and powered by a 2,600mAh battery.

Well, as mentioned, the device was launched back in September at the Photokina photography trade show in Germany. Following on from this, it was expected that the device would only be released in a handful of countries (mostly Europe). Although, back in November the news did break that the device would also make its way to the UK. However, today at CES, Panasonic have announced that the CM1 will be coming to the US. If this is sounding like something you would be interested in, then the good news is that the device is reportedly going to land in the US unlocked and therefore will be compatible with all major carriers. The bad news is that this will not be a cheap handset with the expected retail price being in the region of $1000. In terms of when, the device should be landing in the US sometime in the summer. So, anyone interested in getting a highly camera-focused android smartphone for $1000? let us know.

ASUS Zenfone Zoom debuts, includes 13MP camera with 3x optical zoom

asus_zenfone_zoom_announcement

The announcement of the Zenfone 2 was followed by ASUS’ debut of the Zenfone Zoom. As the name suggests, the handset is all about photography. The rear of the handset has a 13MP camera with 3x optical zoom, laser auto focus, and optical image stabilization. These are all cutting edge technologies that have yet to really make it into many mainstream devices (aside from the LG G3). The massive circle surrounding the lens is reminiscent of what Nokia did with its Lumia 1020, another handset that featured a focus on photography.

On the front side of the Zenfone Zoom is a 5.5-inch display (1920×1080). The display at Full HD resolution should work well to showcase the photographs taken, but some quality is bound to be lost in the mix. And the front-facing camera on the handset is 5MP, making it perfect for selfie lovers.

ASUS’ ZenUI software is covering Android 5.0 Lollipop; therefore, look elsewhere if you require a stock Android experience. Though, ASUS does say ZenUI has been redesigned with usefulness and personalization in mind.

The Zenfone Zoom will be available in the second quarter of 2015 with pricing starting at $399.

Philips Announces That All Of Their TV’s In 2015 Will Carry The Android TV Platform

Philips Logo-1

Android TV seems to be making a much bigger push into the living room than its predecessor, Google TV, as we’re hearing now that Philips will be building it in to all of their 2015 TV models. Right now there is only one single device running Android TV, and that’s the Nexus Player, but Philips isn’t alone as other top name brands will be offering TV’s with Android TV built in too. We’ll end up seeing stuff from Samsung, Sony, and likely LG too as Android TV grows and expands, and earlier this morning during their announcement of Google Cast for audio, Google briefly mentioned the coming of new Android TV products this year so more TV’s are sure to fall into that category.

Philips announced that it will bake in Google’s living room based Android platform into Full HD and 4K TV’s so there will be no shortage of offerings and choices for those looking into Philips as a new TV option this year. What we can expect for prices and exact timing availability is still uncertain, but hopefully we’ll see some stuff sooner than later. Android TV has already proven that it’s much more capable and user friendly than Google TV ever was, and that is likely a reason why we’re seeing so many OEM’s jump on board to offer products that run the platform.

While Android TV was debuted last year and has only thus far produced one product for us to purchase, 2015 should end up being a big year for Android TV and open up many more choices to the consumer looking to add Android TV to their home. I stated this last year when Sony announced they would be offering an Android TV based television, that having the ability baked in makes it much simpler as you have no need for an extra piece of equipment to plug into and HDMI port, thus making for less clutter, although this certainly doesn’t matter to everyone. Nevertheless, Philips seems to find it better to focus on adding it into the products they were already planning on making rather than developing a standalone Android TV box or player. Would you consider a Philips TV with Android TV built in?

It features 10-watt speakers along with a 7-inch (1024 x 600) touchscreen and WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
