We have reviewed both the HTC One M8 and the HTC One E8; two devices with a similar soul, yet bodies that are aimed at different markets. While they hold their slight differences, we have previously mentioned the One E8 is essentially a plastic M8. This holds true in most aspects, but there is more to these devices than such a general statement would entail.
These devices work as a team, which is why we wouldn’t consider this comparison a battle. Instead, it will serve as an helping hand for those trying to decide which of the two HTC devices is the best, based on their own preferences and needs. Should you go metal or plastic?
Let’s start by pulling out the big guns. Design is where these two devices mostly differentiate themselves from one another. You will be able to distinguish them from blocks away.
The HTC One M8 sports an aircraft-grade aluminum housing that has given it its popularity within Android and tech community. It keeps the device feeling as premium as a luxurious jewel, while giving it one of the strongest build qualities we have seen in mobile devices. This doesn’t deem the M8′s design perfect, though. Many users complain about the device’s slippery nature (it sometimes feels like it’s made of butter).
The HTC One E8 is obviously much more wallet friendly, which is the main reason for deviating from a metallic build
The HTC One E8 comes in a variety of colors, including both matte and glossy finishes. The bad news? Both are equally friendly with fingerprints.
Sizes are relatively similar, with only fractions of a millimeter of difference in most measurements. They do sport slightly different backs, which might sway you one way or another, depending on your preferences.
The One M8 has a rounded back, making it a better fit for your hand, but not stable enough when placing it on a flat surface. Meanwhile, the One E8 has a flat back, making it great to interact with while laying on a surface, but not as palm-friendly.
Ports and button placement are nearly identical. The only difference can be found on the top of the devices, where the HTC One E8 has a centered power button and the M8′s is placed further to the right. Likewise, the backs will be a bit different, where the M8 has a Duo Camera and the E8 sports a single 13 MP shooter.
Once you are done admiring the external differences, you will find these devices are much more similar than their exteriors exhibit.
Hardware-wise, you will be hard-pressed to find differences between these devices. They both tout a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM, an Adreno GPU and a microSD card slot. A small difference may be found in their storage options. The One M8 has 16 GB and 32 GB options; the One E8 has a single 16 GB option.
Now let’s jump into the second biggest difference between both smartphones – the cameras. The HTC One M8 boasts its unique 4 MP Ultra Pixel Duo Camera set-up, while the HTC One E8 proudly wears its 13 MP shooter. These sensors are quite different, holding different aspect ratios (6:9 vs 4:3) and different flash technology (dual LED vs standard LED).
All of that is nothing but mumbo jumbo at the end, though. What matters is how well the images look. While we would love to say one of the cameras produces better photos, this is simply not the case. Both have a “hazy fog” around them, and color reduplication is quite inaccurate. Low-light situations will only make it worse, making for flat and grainy images. At the very least, the HTC One M8 does have cooler features like UFocus.
The battle for the design winner is a subjective one. Only you can decide which one you think feels or looks better. The HTC One M8 will definitely have a more premium feeling to it, but some may not treasure build quality enough to pay a higher price.
At the end of the day, these devices will give you a very similar experience, both in terms of software and hardware. Even the cameras are nearly as bad, unless you love the Duo Camera features. One thing is for sure, you won’t go wrong with any of these two smartphones. We may dare to say the One E8 does sport a better build quality compared to other flagship smartphones (*cough* Samsung!).
And how about you – does HTC’s latest offering have what it takes?

It’s also available for the Moto G as I reviewed it on the Moto G earlier this year. The NGP Ultra is available in black, blue, gray and red. The NGP Ultra is a thin, yet protective case for your LG G3. It is transparent, somewhat, so you can still see the beauty of your LG G3, which is beautiful anyways. It is also shock absorbent so that if you drop your LG G3, you should still be perfectly fine. The NGP Ultra is flexible and thin, so it’s easy to put on and take it off of the device without any issues.
I’ve been using the NGP Ultra case on my LG G3 for a few days now, and I do actually really like it. I’ve got the black one here, and it looks great, as well as feeling great. What’s most important here – for the LG G3 at least – is that it adds grip to your phone. I know the LG G3 is a bit slippery at times, and this fixes that without adding a ton of bulk to the device. Which is why I’m a fan of the NGP Ultra. Now it’s not as thin as the Feather case we reviewed last week, but it’s still quite thin. The NGP Ultra also has a bit of a lip over the sides of the LG G3, so that you can lay your phone face down on a table and it won’t scratch up the display, which is great.
Incipio is currently selling the NGP Ultra case for the LG G3 for $24.99. While Amazon has it as low as $16.75, for those interested and have Amazon Prime. How many of you are looking to pick up this case? Let us know in the comments below.

News Alarm is a mixture between a podcast application and a news application. How it works is you set an alarm and then pick a podcast or two. When the alarm goes off then the app will start to play the podcast instead of a ringtone, alarm tone, or music. It’s built for people who like to wake up to the news.
The app layout is pretty simple. It uses the Google Now style card-based layout and each card is an alarm. You can set multiple alarms if you want to and have each one go off with a different podcast. From there, you just wait for the alarm and listen to the podcast while you perform your morning ablutions. It’s really easy to use.
The podcast line up is a little small but it has a lot of really good ones including NPR, The Guardian, BBC, and Joe Rogan among others. There are more categories too including movies, comedy, music, and business.
Aside from the main features, there isn’t much more to this application and we admit the user base is probably pretty niche. We would’ve liked to have seen support for more podcasts or even see the podcast scrape iTunes like Pocket Casts or Doggcatcher.

The FCC has been trying to crack down when it comes to quality services and competition in the US market. One such example is FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler and a letter he sent out to all of the large US wireless carriers. This letter was sent out because some recent data throttling policy changes made by Verizon has Wheeler concerned. The question on Wheeler’s mind seems to be are wireless carriers throttling speeds due to business relationships or due to network challenges?
Wheeler’s interest was piqued when last month Verizon announced some changes to their data policy. Verizon announced that the top 5 percent of their high speed data users who are still using plans from years ago may start to experience slower data speeds. What’s interesting is these users are paying less for unlimited data that Verizon has raised the prices on, but since they had the plans from years ago, they get to keep their old pricing. After this announcement, Wheeler sent a letter to Verizon where he expressed his concerns and used the words “deeply troubled”. What was interesting was how Verizon decided to respond to this letter.
Verizon has responded to the letter saying that this slowing of data speeds is something that is “widely accepted” amongst carriers in the US. Verizon claims this is to manage their networks properly, and even mentioned that other carriers are doing the same thing in order to unclog the top tier of data users. Wheeler responded Friday, “‘All the kids do it’ was never something that worked for me when I was growing up,” Wheeler continued to explain to reporters, “My concern in this instance- and it’s not just Verizon, by the way, we’ve written to all the carriers- is that it (network management) is moving from a technology and engineering issue to the business issues…such as choosing between different subscribers based on your economic relationship with them.”
Sprint and T-Mobile have both commented on the matter, but AT&T has remained silent thus far. Sprint’s response was made by a Sprint Corp spokeswoman who said, Sprint “goes to great lengths to be transparent about its network management practices,” She continued to say that Sprint plans on responding to Wheeler’s letter as asked.
A Spokeswoman for T-Mobile USA said, “Our network practices are consistent with the Commission’s rules on the open Internet, are innovative and are good for consumers and competition.”
Meanwhile, the FCC is still working out new laws and debating if these rules should be more strict for wireless providers. They hope to solve any issue that could arise thanks to the new “net neutrality” rules. The FCC has not released the letters that have been sent out to the carriers. Although they have mentioned that AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile only received letters after Verizon responded to their letter.

Motorola released the Moto G last year and absolutely conquered the low-tier phone class with a cheap price and mid-range specs, causing it to be Motorola’s best-selling phone of all-time. After such an overwhelming success, it seems almost mandatory for Motorola to follow up with something big, and it seems it has. The new device has shown up in an inventory list of a popular Australian retailer, hinting that it may hit the shelves this month.
Along with this revelation comes hints at specs. The Moto G2 should have another 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 720p screen, except it seems the display will be 5″ this time around. The camera gets an upgrade to 8 MP, and it seems the base model will also include expandable storage. The original device will most likely lack LTE, but if Motorola copies the original model, LTE will be added for a premium at a later date. Price estimates at this point are $250-275.
