If you’ve been waiting for a price drop to pick up Gameloft’s newest mobile FPS, now’s your chance to pick up Modern Combat 5: Blackout and save a few bucks. Gameloft has put MC5 on sale for $3.99, down from the launch price of $6.99, which saves you about 40%. The game itself is pretty impressive for a mobile shooter and features a full campaign as well as multiplayer modes. The graphics are also top-notch for a mobile game, and there’s plenty of value here for the $4 asking price.

The Moto X 2nd Gen hasn’t been as hard to get a hold of as the Moto 360 smartwatch, but thanks to these deals that have popped up on Amazon you can now pick up the device through Verizon Wireless or AT&T for what appears to be the best pricing we’ve seen for the phone so far since it launched. There are some stipulations of course, the deals only apply to a few different colors, it’s only on the Verizon and AT&T models, and you’re required to sign a 2-year contract to get the pricing listed.
If that sounds OK to you then you might want to take a look. Both carriers are having a deal with the two year contract signing for the White Bamboo model and the Black Resin model of the device, and if you’re a subscriber of AT&T there’s also a deal on the Black Leather model. For AT&T, you can sign up for another 2 years and pick up the Black Resin model for just $49.99, and you’ll find that same price if you pick it up with Verizon. That’s where the similarities for pricing end between the two, as AT&T is offering the White and Bamboo model for $69.99 while Verizon’s is $10 more at a price of $79.99, that’s still a nice little savings from the original cost though. With the Black Leather model the deal pricing isn’t even offered through Verizon, but AT&T has it for the same price as the Bamboo model which again is $69.99. It should be noted that all of these models offered in the deal are the devices with 16GB of on board storage space and not the 32GB models. If you’re interested in grabbing the new Moto X and wanted to save a little money, you can find the Amazon links to the device pages below.
Moto X 2nd Gen 16GB AT&T Black Resin – $49.99
Moto X 2nd Gen 16GB AT&T White Bamboo – $69.99
Moto X 2nd Gen 16GB AT&T Black Leather – $69.99
Moto X 2nd Gen 16GB Verizon Wireless Black Resin – $49.99

Google Now has done wonders for people. It has reminded us to finish homework, to take out the trash, walk the dog, show us stories we may be interested in, and simply answers to any request we ask of it. As the days move forward, it seems that Google Now just gets a bit better with new features that Google adds to help notify us of important things. The latest addition to Google Now is the voter registration card. The card has started showing up to Pennsylvania residents. Apparently, the card isn’t showing up due to what the user searched like “Voter Registration,” but because of their location.
According to Droid-Life, a reader said that they haven’t searched up anything voter related in a long time, nor have they searched up the term “Voter Registration” since they first started voting back in 1988. The reader also asked around at work to see if their co-workers received the same card in their Google Now, and surprisingly they did. From the picture provided, you can see that the card is informing the user of the deadline to register so they can vote. The card also provides when the upcoming Pennsylvania general election takes place and two buttons that will let you register or check your registration status.
As of right now, we only have word that this card is showing up for residents in Pennsylvania. Personally, I haven’t received a voter registration card reminding me to vote. In addition, I have also gone ahead and asked a few of my friends that have Google Now if they received a voter registration card. They all said no which leaves me to guess that Google is probably still pushing out the new card to all the Google Now users. That could be the reason why we haven’t seen anything yet. At this point, we need you, an avid reader and Android fanatic, to check your Google Now and let us know if you have a voter registration reminder card. If so, let us know by leaving a comment on this article or on our Google Plus page.

With it being Nexus season and all, and with more and more apps taking on the Material Design approach, we thought it fitting that this weeks homescreen pick had some Material Design flare as well. In fact, this weeks pick is called Material V2 and has a very materialistic look about it. In a good way of course. There’s plenty of color pop here, with bright vivid color displays, and just about everything you might need right at your fingertips. As with all our homescreen picks, you’ll need a few things to recreate this look, and we’ll go over what you to grab, and how you can set this homescreen look up for yourself.
Material V2 was created by David Lopez Pitoko, and he used a selection of different apps to get this design. First, you’ll need a third party home launcher. Pitoko mentions Nova Prime as the launcher he used, although you should be able to recreate it using Apex pro as well. You’ll also need Zooper Pro for the widgets, as well as media utilities to control the media buttons that are part of the widget. As far as apps go those are the only three you need. Pretty simple right? You’ll also need the download files of course, which you can pick up from Pitoko’s G+ post, and you can find the link to that at the mycolorscreen page for this homescreen which is listed in the source below. Once you have all the apps and files you need installed and downloaded onto your device, you’ll need to make sure that you have the homescreen grid size set to 6 x 6, and be sure to hide the dock and the navigation bar down at the bottom. Make sure that you have three homescreen pages, set your scroll effect to the wipe option(which is probably a Nova Prime specific transition effect)and place one widget on each screen and make sure they take up the whole display.
If you like the look of this homescreen, be sure to show David Pitoko some appreciation by hitting the love button over at the mycolorscreen page, and zoom on the picture on the mycolorscreen page as well. Have fun customizing and have a great weekend!

Back in April, I was due a smartphone upgrade. I eventually narrowed the choice down between two devices, the HTC One (M8) and the Moto X. I don’t think I could have taken a bad decision because each device has its own particular strengths and weaknesses compared with the other, but I remember rebooting the Moto X and absolutely loving Motorola’s custom animation. There are many things to like about both devices but I certainly didn’t expect a funky animation when powering up the Moto X. This animation had also changed from the first time I’d used one back in February (the UK didn’t get the Moto X until six very, very long months after being released in the USA). We’re now seeing reports over at Droid Life that the original Moto X has received a new boot animation, which you can watch below:
Click here to view the embedded video.
If you have the 2013 Moto X, this update will be silently pushed to your device; go ahead and give it a reboot to see if you have the new animated logo. We expect it to arrive on the other devices in the next few days. Motorola’s Moto X, G and E devices have a number of quirky features that only become obvious over a period of time with the device. The customised boot animation is not something that I would personally see very often as I do not often turn my handset off, but I know that some of my family members turn their devices off at night and turn them back on the following morning (usually). They’d notice the new animation pretty quickly!
As for the original Moto X, this device is now letting a little long in the tooth. It’s still one of my favourite devices as it’s a great ‘phone if you don’t care for wowing your buddies with a random sequence of numbers meant to indicate the processor speed. The X is based around a customised Motorola chipset called the X8, which pairs up a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro with 2 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage. There’s a 10 MP camera on the back and a 720p resolution 4.7-inch AMOLED screen on the front. Things are kept powered up by a 2,200 mAh battery plus a 4G radio. However, the Moto X is not about on-box specifications but instead it’s about the software features: the X benefits from always-listening Moto Voice, clever use of the AMOLED via Moto Display and Moto Assist, that interprets when you are driving or busy in a meeting and doesn’t distract you. With the new Moto X having been announced, the device has (finally) been reduced in price in the UK. Yes it’s an older device, but I prefer it over many of the current mid-range devices.

If you’re a lover of comics and manga then this is the battle that matters. There are a handful of different manga apps on the Play Store and some of them pretty good, but when it comes right down to it there can only be one winner and we’ll attempt to find out who that winner should be between these two epic manga apps. We’ll break down some of the features from each and as always we’ll be throwing a poll at the bottom so make sure to cast your vote. Who deserves to be crowned king? Let’s find out shall we?
Manga Rock is a great app for reading your favorite manga. It has a beautiful interface which makes reading the manga very enjoyable as it has an optimized experience for reading on smartphones and tablets. The library is fairly large with over 100 thousand different Manga to choose from, pulling in manga from over 20 different sources. The app is localized in seven different languages too, supporting English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese. Whether you like to read in portrait or landscape mode, Manga Rock supports both orientations so you can enjoy reading however you like.
It has a useful backup and restore tool that allows you to access your Manga Rock data across multiple devices, which is something plenty of apps and games need am I right? If you’re running Android 4.4 or above Manga Rock supports the immersive mode so that you can read your manga without having the status or nav bars present, allowing the manga to take up the full screen. Search and filters make it easy to find the manga that you’re looking for, and if you want to read something new but just don’t want to go searching, you can use the built in discovery tool that will recommend suggestions based on previously read manga. View and sift through all manga in list view or in cover view so you can see the big picture art for each manga, giving the app some extra visual appeal and possibly making it easier to search for the manga you want thanks to the aide of matching the pictures to the name. It also features some really cool personalization option so that you can customize your reading experience, and downloading manga is fast, with storage of manga going directly to your SD card for offline reading. Manga Rock’s one downfall, is that it doesn’t contain access to certain more popular manga that are licensed by certain companies, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece just to name a few. Manga Rock is free, but it does support an in-app purchase for extra features.
When it comes to new manga, licensed manga, and anything current, Crunchyroll just might be the best place to go. Crunchyroll allows users access to the hottest manga as it comes out in Japan, so there’s no waiting to get your hands on the latest chapters or volumes and you can get to reading straight away. With Crunchyroll, the app is free but it does require a Crunchyroll account and a subscription if you want access to the all of the latest stuff. Because of this though, you get unlimited access to pretty much everything new and old, license or not. Crunchyroll is already the leading provider and distributor of Anime, and with their new app they’re eyes on the prize of becoming the number one Manga app.
As we stated above the app gets access to the latest manga as soon as it becomes available in Japan, and comes with full mobile support for Android devices including what Crunchyroll calls koma-view, which allows for the maximum scale per panel. You can view the entire series catalog anytime and anywhere. The Crunchyroll manga app is slightly newer than Manga Rock, so there will be a smaller library of manga to access, but they will also have access to hit manga titles like Attack on Titan which Manga Rock doesn’t have available.
So who deserves to be the champion of these two great manga apps? Do you prefer a larger library of accessible manga to read or would you rather have access to the latest manga as they come out in Japan, even if it means a smaller library of titles? Both appear to have great user interfaces and offer full screen viewing for the best and most enjoyable reading experience. One is free with a one time payment in-app to get some extra features, while the other is free with an associated monthly fee to the Crunchyroll service for full access to all chapters for every manga in the library. Cast your votes in the polls and help decide which is the king of manga apps on Android.

Almost a year and a month after the Motorola X (1st generation) landed in-stores with U.S. Cellular the new Moto X is being released. Yes, from today you can now pick up the second generation Moto X on U.S. Cellular. The device did originally launch last month and was available direct from Motorola as well as from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. However, if U.S. Cellular is your choice of carrier then now is the time to pick up the next-Gen X. Need to know the price? Of course you do!
If you are interested, then the Moto X is available straight up with no contract for $480. If you don’t really want to spend that much and more interested in a contract (or renewing or upgrading), then you can get the Moto X for $99.99 up-front. Of course you will still have to pay the normal monthly plan cost. At present it seems only the standard black model is available via U.S. Cellular, with no firm details on when either the black leather or Bamboo backs will land. Although they are expected sometime later in the month and will cost an additional $50 to purchase.
If you need a quick reminder on the device then the new Moto X comes with a 5.2” AMOLED display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution (423pp1). Inside the device comes offers 2GB RAM as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with an Adreno 330 GPU. In terms of cameras there is a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front shooter. The device is available as 16 and 32GB variants although U.S. Cellular only seems to be listing the 16GB version at the moment. With this in mind it is worth remembering that there is no microSD card slot on this device so the 16GB is all you will get. The device comes running on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) and is powered using a 2300mAh battery. Again, it is worth noting this is a non-removal battery so bare this in mind. So there you go. If you were waiting for U.S. Cellular to finally catch up with the other carriers then the waiting is finally over.

Facebook is the world’s most popular social network and over 500 million users use the service every day. WhatsApp is one of the most popular Internet messaging services and has more than 600 million monthly users. It seems only natural that the two businesses should get together? That depends on your perspective but now the European Union has cleared Facebook’s $19 billion purchase of WhatsApp. This is Facebook’s largest deal in its ten year history and gives the business an even stronger foothold in the mobile messaging market; and let’s not forget WhatsApp’s plans to include voice calling functionality into the application. The European Commission has said that Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp won’t hurt competition and I am inclined to agree.
The reason why I don’t believe WhatsApp’s voice calling functionality is competition against the mobile networks is because voice calling has peaked across much of the world. It’s considerably more expensive to establish a voice call compared with a data network and the current modern standard 4G network, LTE (Long Term Evolution), cannot handle voice calls as older generation networks do. Instead, LTE is much more efficient at handling data connections and is able to handle more subscribers at a higher speed compared with a 3G mast. The carriers are investing in VoIP, Voice-over-IP or voice over a data network, which will include LTE, 3G and WiFi networks. This is all a part of the Internet of Things (IoT, see here). The carriers are working on building out their data capacity and investing in technologies to use this for handling voice calls, but Facebook’s service will likely be a Facebook to Facebook (perhaps via WhatsApp) connection.
Instead, I see Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp as making them more a competitor for Google, which already has Google+ and Hangouts. Facebook, like Google, is in the advertising business and both companies have talked about bringing the Internet and communications to the developed world. Facebook has largely reached saturation in the developed markets but there are billions of people in the developed market who don’t have accounts. WhatsApp is reaching these markets and Facebook wants to follow.

Today, it appears that the Google+ team is pushing out a new update for the Google+ for Android App. We’ve got a few changes here compared to the old app. But nothing too big. This is version 4.6, and we’re seeing a bit more material design elements in here, which we’d expect with Android L coming really soon. There is a new launcher icon which matches Google’s other material design launcher icons like Google Play Newsstand for one. The red bar at the top is now a bit brighter, and not as dark. Additionally, the floating “new post” icon at the bottom right is now inverted. It used to be a white circle with a red pen, and now it’s a red circle with a white pen. Google+ font is also a bit more bold (but that depends on the device you’re using).
Additionally the Google Photos app also got a nice update. It’s got a bit more material design inside than we thought it would. But it is nice to see that finally get an update. It’s been without one for quite some time. They’ve also added an Auto-Awesome button to the toolbar on the Google+ Photos app which is a bit surprising, but also cool at the same time.
The staged rollout has already started. So it may be a few weeks before it hits your device. But don’t worry, we’ve got the APK down below for you. So if you’re interested in getting the update on your device now. Just head to the link below. Remember that this will upgrade your current version of Google+. You’ll also need to have “Unknown Sources” checked in the Settings > Security menu of your device.
How many of you are excited for all these Material Design updates to start going live? Let us know in the comments down below.

Entwined Challenge was launched by Playstation Mobile just earlier this morning, and instantly we felt that it deserved some spotlight as game of the week. The original full game of Entwined is out and available for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita, and the challenge mode from the full game has been slightly altered and optimized for play on Android smartphones and tablets. The game features striking visuals just like you’d see in the full game, although admittedly it probably still looks a good deal better on consoles than it does on smartphones. The colors appear just as vivid, and you get to listen to great original soundtrack while you play which makes this game almost soothing in a way.
Entwined Challenge focuses on keeping the games two characters, the fish and the bird, moving in perfect harmony so that you might be able to reach the end of the level and lead the two into evolution. Controls are fairly simple and of course touch based, although we hope that Sony adds controller support at some point. You place your fingers on both sides of the screen, and simply drag up or down to move and control both the fish and the bird. The goal is to move the characters in line with the upcoming objects you see on screen which match the colors of the characters.
There are five different Asian inspired unique levels themed after the elements, water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. As you move through each object, you’ll gain points and rack them up on your high score, which you can use to compare yourself in the leaderboard against others who play the game. You will need a certain amount of points to unlock following levels, and upon reaching certain scores within each level you’ll be able to unlock extras like concept art, sketches and videos of the game. The app will set you back $0.99, which seems like a good price for what you’re getting. The game feels fluid, and is actually quite addicting when picked up to play. If you loved the original Entwined and wanted the ability to get some action with it on the go, you can grab Entwined Challenge from the Play Store link.

We saw a pretty interesting report come out of The Economic Times of India today. It’s one that’s hard to believe. But basically after Google was turned down for buying Whatsapp – and Facebook snuck in and grabbed them – Google has decided to create their own Whatsapp competitor. But wait a minute. What about Hangouts?
The big deal here is that people won’t need a Google account to use this service. Which means it should work on forked versions of Android like the Kindle Fire tablets. But more importantly, it’ll be available in emerging markets that don’t have access to Google. We’ll likely see this messaging service have a smaller app size too. While Hangouts is only about 30 megs or so – at least on the Galaxy Alpha it is – that’s still pretty large for phones in emerging markets. For instance the Android One devices only have about 4GB of space, and a lot of that is taken up by the OS.
The first market to see this new service is said to be India. Which isn’t a huge surprise as that’s where Android One started. The Times of India seems to think that it’ll launch in the very near future. Which is quite possible, and we’ll have to keep our eyes out to see what does happen here, as this is getting a bit more interesting. With both Google and Motorola focusing more on India.
So Hangouts was made to combine all of Google’s messaging services. Now they are creating another one, basically to rival Hangouts, and one that doesn’t need a Google account. I’m a bit confused here. But I’m sure Google knows what they are doing here. What does everyone think about this report? Think it’s true? Or just another baseless rumor? Let us know in the comments below.

Looking for a great, cheap tablet? Well the Nexus 7 is your best bet. It is about a year old, but it is still running the latest version of Android, that’s Android 4.4.4 KitKat. And right now, eBay has the Nexus 7 (brand new not refurbished) on sale for just $129.99. That’s $100 less than it’s regular price tag. It features a 7-inch 1920×1200 resolution display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 3950mAh battery inside. You can grab it from the link below.

Are you in the UK and looking to pick up a Moto X through MotoMaker? Well today’s your day. Motorola opened up MotoMaker into the UK today. So now you can go ahead and design your own Moto X and choose a leather or wood back, choose 16GB or 32GB, etc., there’s all kinds of options to choose from. And I’ve seen some really cool combinations already from MotoMaker. Motorola is selling the Pure Edition (aka SIM Free) for just £419.99, which is much cheaper than it was earlier this year when the original Moto X launched over there.
We went to Chicago last month for Motorola’s launch event. We got to see how Motorola makes these devices, they also showed us all kinds of features of the Moto X (2014) which was really cool. We also spent about 3-4 weeks with the AT&T variant of the Moto X and really did like it. Motorola improved in all the spots that the original Moto X was lacking. Like the specs. We now have a 5.2-inch 1080p AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage with no microSD card slot, 13MP camera on the back (it’s a Sony sensor this time around), 2MP front-facing camera, and a 2300mAh battery. There’s also Android 4.4.4 Kitkat on board.
The Moto X is a pretty spectacular device. Especially if you like stock Android. Motorola has added some really cool features on top, which are basically through their own apps, so if you don’t like them or don’t want them, you can just simply uninstall them. Now only if other OEMs would follow that path. How many of you in the UK are looking forward to designing your own Moto X through MotoMaker? Let us know your thoughtsin the comments below.

The Nexus 6 has been met with mixed feelings so far. One one side you’ve got those that are used to the Galaxy Note line up of devices loving the Nexus 6’s size. With it’s 5.9-inch display. On the other hand you’ve got just about everyone else. Who is looking for a device they can use with one hand. Which, unless you are a giant, you won’t be able to use the Nexus 6 with just one hand. Which is unfortunate, because I often use my smartphone with just one hand. And that’s why I got rid of my OnePlus One in favor of the LG G3. Even though they are the same size screen, the bezels make a huge difference.
In this video by Canoopsy, he has a mock up of the Nexus 6 which is supposedly made off of the leaked images we’ve seen in recent days for the Nexus 6 from Motorola. He compares it to the Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and a few other flagships as well so we can see just how big it really is. It looks to be about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which does actually have a smaller display. So that shows you that the bezels can really make a phone smaller with a larger display. Motorola did this with their Moto X already, basically the same body size as the 5.1-inch display Samsung Galaxy S5, but squeezed in a 5.2-inch display.
The Nexus 6 isn’t yet official, but it’s getting pretty close. We should be hearing an announcement from Google pretty soon about the Nexus 6, and Android L launching. Which we can’t wait for. How many of you are excited for the Nexus 6 from Motorola to finally be unveiled in the next few weeks? Let us know in the comments down below.

A day after Google posted up the Android 4.4.4 (KTU84P) factory image for the Nexus 7 (2013) “mobile,” the device is receiving an update over-the-air to the build.
The update is tiny (2.4MB), as you would expect, but does finally bring the device up to the most current version of Android, right along side its brothers, the Nexus 4, 5, 7 (2012), and 10.

Earlier today, Facebook announced thats its now received approval from the European Union for its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp Messenger — that’s an eye-watering $16 billion more than Apple paid for Beats Electronics back in May.
The main bone of contention regarding this deal was the fear that it would impair communication in the telecom market, but, according Re/code, the European Commission claims that the Facebook-WhatsApp deal will not thwart competition.
“We have carefully reviewed this proposed acquisition and come to the conclusion that it would not hamper competition in this dynamic and growing market. Consumers will continue to have a wide choice of consumer communications apps,” European Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said.
What do you think of Facebook-WhatsApp acquisition? Do you think it will be beneficial to us, the consumer? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
