Google Play Service 7.3 update brings trusted places UI [APK Download]

Google_Play_Services_Splash_Banner Google has updated their Play Services app to version 7.3 with a few new features, notably one adding a user interface for trusted places.

This UI will let you select an area as “trusted” within a ring, which will disable security features in that zone. This would be useful if you wanted to remove your password on your lock screen at home but keep it on everywhere else.

Another new trick is the ability to dismiss Android Wear notifications. Prior to this update, a connected Android Wear device would put a permanent notification in your notification bar. This might not have bothered some people, but others like a clean notification shade, so being able to swipe it away is handy.

If you don’t want to wait for the update to roll out to your device, you can grab the apk below.

OnePlus schedules event for 4/20, OnePlus Two incoming?

oneplus bamboo

After a report revealed that Chinese startup OnePlus would be launching not 1, but 2 handsets this year, former Oppo vice president Pete Lau n’ friends are gearing up to announce something on April 20th. The company — which has upped their employee count from 6 to over 1,000 new workers — announced the news, where else, but on their Google+ page.

OnePlus event invite announcement April 20th 2015

We’re not sure what they’ll be announcing, but it’s pretty short notice. Their announcement post didn’t give us any clues, only that “From here on out, anything could happen.” While it seems fairly sudden to announce a followup to last year’s OnePlus One, it has almost been a year since the original was announced. Still, we’re not ruling out the possibility of a new hemp backed OnePlus One cover either.

Jokes aside, we’d actually love to see a OnePlus Two and maybe smaller OnePlus Half unveiled on Monday. Despite countless flubs over marketing of the OnePlus One last year and an even more frustrating invite system, it’s hard to deny it was a great phone at an even more attractive price point. Recently, OnePlus launched their own in-house Android build for the device dubbed OxygenOS, followed shortly after by Cyanogen OS 12.

We wont have to wait too much longer, April 20th is barely a few more days away. Heck, even sooner if you’re in China. What do you guys think it will be. Even better, what are you hoping for?

The FCC Votes To Open Usage Of The 3.5GHz Spectrum As Part Of Advanced Spectrum Sharing

AH FCC LOGO-8

Over the last couple of years the FCC has been laying out rules and working to start using a new frequency band, and just this week the FCC reportedly voted to begin the process for using the 3.5GHz spectrum they call the Innovation band. It has been warded this name because of the fact that it has the potential to be a suitable frequency for potential future uses that are unknown at the moment, meaning there may be new technology that comes about in the future that could use the 3.5GHz spectrum. As for what the FCC plans to use it for now, it’ll be adopted into uses for commercial purposes as well as mobile broadband.

The use of the band will be part of an initiative for the FCC’s plans of spectrum sharing, a tactic that is reported to potentially assist wireless broadband systems share spectrum with military radars without negatively affecting federal missions. Not all are happy about the prospect of spectrum sharing though, as was voiced during the time of the vote about adopting the 3.5GHz spectrum for these purposes. Some, companies like AT&T included, are skeptical about the use of advanced spectrum sharing technology because they’re worried that LTE assisted access might affect WiFi. In light of this AT&T has openly stated they won’t deploy or don’t plan on deploying LTE assisted access until they know it won’t affect WiFi users.

The FCC details the 3.5GHz spectrum as having three different tiers, each with its own level of access and specific alterations. The first level is described as a general authorized access tier where commercial users getting access to the spectrum at this level would pay nothing to access it. The second tier, which is referred to as a PAL or a Priority Access License, can bid in an auction on short term licenses which can afford them interference free use from those on the GAA level. The last tier which is the highest is meant for incumbent federal and commercial radar, as well as satellite. Spectrum talk may not be the most exciting when it comes to technology, but some believe it will be a huge benefit in the ways of innovation and open up for new investments in mobile broadband, and in the long run give better value to the consumer.

Android Game Of The Week: Implosion – Never Lose Hope

Implosion

There were actually quite a few good games that dropped this week, which made the choice all the harder in picking a game to feature. In the end though, Implosion – Never Lose Hope takes the cake. This is a hack and slash game filled with loads of action, gorgeous graphics, and tons of replay value and while hack and slash titles on Android or on mobile in general are hardly a scarce genre, few, if any have really been able to reach the level of value that you’ll get out of Implosion. If you’re a fan of action titles, Implosion is definitely worth a look, and seeing as how they let you test the game for the first 6 levels before you’re met with the choice to pass on it or buy the full game, there’s plenty of time to decide whether you like it or not. The game will cost you $9.99 should you decide to keep going, but for the gameplay, the graphics, the story and no IAP past the initial buy for a full game unlock, $10 feels reasonable.

In Implosion, the earth has been invaded by a destructive alien entity known as the Xada, and your character is sent back to earth 20 years after it’s fall to fight back and save humanity. You stand your ground in a giant weaponized Mech suit that brandishes a giant sword, and while you have a general slash attack you will end up with the ability to use special attacks through items you can equip to your suit as part of something called the system ARK. Through the ARK you can also equip specific items that give you no additional abilities, but they do alter your stats like attack power, defense, HP, etc. There is also a dodge mechanic built in so you can move out of the way of enemy attacks, and you’ll certainly need this plenty throughout the game.

This is a hack and slash game, so while you can go through simply mashing on the attack button in rapid succession, players are rewarded for utilizing timed button taps to execute specialized slash attacks with your sword. You also have a ranged weapon attack and start off with an auto rifle, (which sticks with you through the game) but you will find other ranged weapons like a blast shotgun and rocket launchers from time to time. There are loads of different enemy types, which helps to mix things up, and there are a handful of bosses and mini-bosses throughout the game as well, and a huge main boss at the end of each chapter. There are also multiple badges to earn, usually two or three from each stage, which are used as a sort of currency to receive reward unlocks, and eventually you can unlock the second mech suit which uses a sort of staff instead of a sword for the main weapon. When it comes to buying item upgrades for the system ARK, you';ll come across caches of items and money within each stage, although sometimes they can be hard to spot so watch for anything that is destructable when you attack it. The game will usually alert you when you get close enough to these things. There are also two different difficulties for each stage which adds to the replay value, and there are cutscenes spliced in between certain stages, along with some pretty good voice acting to carry the story.

Top New Games April 17th

The Getaway: Traffic Racer 3DThe Getaway

If you remember playing the original Grand Theft Auto titles, like GTA and GTA 2, then The Getaway might strike you with some nostalgia. It’s a top down view like the first two games (although angled and not completely over head) and none of the gameplay is really like grand theft auto as you have no missions to pick up, but you are running from the police, and there’s coins to pick up along the way and some pretty nice cell shaded graphics. This is endless like gameplay so basically just see how far you can go and the highest score you can possibly get before you’re caught.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

The 7th Guest: RemasteredThe 7th Guest

The 7th Guest has been remastered (as the title suggests) and ported over to Android for its 20th anniversary. It’s an adventure game with tons of puzzles, some them haunting and otherwise chilling to the bone. Or so the game’s creators would have you believe. You might not get extremely creeped out when playing this, but it should be filled with fun and hours of nostalgic enjoyment if you’ve played the original.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Gunslugs II Free VersionGunSlugs II

Orange Pixel dropped the second Gunslugs title back in January, but the game would cost you a few bucks if you wanted to give it a shot. Now Orange Pixel is giving those who love action platformers a chance to play the game for free. If you liked the original Gunslugs, give Gunslugs II a go and see how it fares.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Implosion – Never Lose HopeImplosion

Implosion is a hack and slash action title about saving the earth from aliens with a giant mech suit. The graphics are fierce, the combat is awesome, and there are no IAP (minus the one time buy to unlock the game) There is plenty of enjoyment though. This was our featured game of the week, so you can check the write up on it here if you like.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Space MarshalsSpace Marshals

Space Marshals is a top down dual stick shooter with some great action and a playful wild west-scifi theme. Combat is tactical, so you can choose to go stealth at certain points or go in guns blazing. There’s tons of weaponry and other items for your loadout, and this will be an episodic series with more episodes being released in the future.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Masters Of The MasksMasters of The Masks

This is an interesting little RPG title from Square Enix. The gameplay is sidescrolling and reminds us a little bit of the original Battleheart from Mika Mobile. Combat is turn based, and there appears to be a large cast of characters which should help to keep things interesting.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

New Leaked Images Have Surfaced Claiming To Be The Fourth Generation Sony Xperia Z Device

Sony-Logo-AH8

Leaks have become a commonplace occurrence with new technology drops and anything else that industry professionals and general tech enthusiasts might find interesting, and this includes the large array of smartphones and other mobile devices that make it to market every single year. One device that has been getting its fair share of leaks in the past few months is the fourth generation of the Sony Xperia Z device, and building upon what we have already seen from past leaks, there are more new images that have surfaced today that could be of the Xperia Z3 successor.

In the very first image there is something noticeable that has been talked about as one of the rumored features of the upcoming flagship device from Sony, and that’s the use of a bottom mounted charging port. If this seems insignificant, it’s likely you may not have used or seen any Sony devices before, which tend to have the charging ports on the side of the device behind a tiny door which you can use to seal up the port. That doesn’t appear to be the case in this image. It also looks as if the charging port might be USB Type C, but that is only a guess based on the way the port looks in this image.

The new leaks also show off a small portion of the screen, as well as the emphasize parts of the frame on the device which look much more like a polished metal than what was used on the Sony Xperia Z3, although it does appear the corners are about the same roundness as before. What appears odd, is the icons in the app dock on the screen, and the navigation buttons. The navigation buttons are not from Lollipop, (as the Xperia Z4 should be running) and for that matter the icons are older versions as well. The Playstion Mobile app also appears out of place since Sony is shutting down Playstation Mobile this Fall and they will no longer offer the service. While we’re not quite sure what to make of these just yet, they could be images of an upcoming Xperia Z4, or, it’s possible these are leaked renders of the Sony Xperia Z3 Neo that has been rumored over the past week or two.

Android Game News Weekly April 17th: Lara Croft: Relic Run, Hearthstone, Warhammer 40K: Space Wolf, Pixels, And More!

AH Game News Weekly

Lara Croft Relic Run Is Coming To Android Soontumblr_nmr43viTRD1qkq7tbo2_r1_1280

If you like endless runners but would enjoy them more if they featured characters from your favorite console games, then look no further, as Square Enix has announced recently that Lara Croft: Relic Run will be coming to Android soon. You’ll be running much like you would in Temple Run, but you’ll also be running across pits along the wall and speeding along on a motor cycle at certain times, so it appears much more action packed. There is no details on release date or pricing yet unfortunately.

Hearthstone Finally Comes To Android SmartphonesHearthstone-Heroes-of-Warcraft-1

Up until now, Blizzard’s wildly popular card battler was only playable on Android tablets, before that, it was exclusive to the iPad. All that has changed this week as Blizzard has finally made Hearthstone compatible with smartphones. This means just about anyone can pick up their Android smartphone and throw down a few rounds against an opponent or play along with the single player story mode. You do have to pay for those unlocks though.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Warhammer 40K: Space Wolf Hits Open BetaWarhammer 40K Space Wolf

As of this very moment you can still join the open beta test for Warhammer 40k: Space Wolf, which is a tactical turn-based combat RPG where you play as the ever so brave space marines. Combat is also powered by the inclusion of cards you can collect, which range from things like weapons, armor, new characters and more. You can join the open beta by first joining the beta test group, then clicking the link within that group on G+ to become a beta tester, and finally, downloading the game.

Bandai Namco Partners With Sony For A Pixels Mobile GamePixel-Screenshot

If you’re hyped about the upcoming Pixels movie, then you might be equally hyped that Sony is teaming with Bandai Namco to create a mobile game in the movies honor. Will it be terrible? We have no idea yet, only time can tell. Bandai says the game will take on a tower defense style, but there should be some non-tower defense type elements baked in. There’s a screenshot from the game above, and who knows, it might be quite fun.

Lost Within Survival-Horror Game Hits The Amazon App StoreScreenshot (1545)

If you like creepy survival-horror games then Lost Within is sure to please. The only downside is at the moment, it’s only available for Kindle Fire tablets and iOS devices, with no mention of getting a release on traditional Android tablets. All that aside, the game actually looks pretty good and should be fun if you have a compatible device.

Hitman GO Currently On Sale For A BuckAH Hitman GO

One of the better and more unique puzzle titles on Android is Square Enix’s Hitman GO, and for a limited time it’s on sale for only $0.99. Normally it’s $4.99 for the original set of content, (not including the DLC levels) so this is a pretty good deal. Get it while you can!Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1
