Rolling display could be portable large screen

rollrr_web_logo

Samsung and LG both brought devices with curved screens to market as proofs of concept and more recently Samsung launched the Galaxy Note Edge that incorporates a curved display along one edge of the device. These efforts only scratch at the surface of what may eventually be possible with flexible displays. A new product from RollRR hopes to bring a display to market that takes full advantage of flexible display technology as well as providing a solution to real world problems.

The device RollRR is developing takes the form of a projector screen or perhaps a auto sunshade. This means the screen can be transported in a relatively small tube whose unwieldiness is determined by the length needed to accommodate the screen contained therein. The screen itself in a prototype developed by RollRR is made of e-paper, but the company hopes to eventually use full-color flexible OLED materials.

RollRR is also considering embedding touch technology into the screen so input capabilities could be added to the device. Eventually RollRR thinks a screen the size of a large flat screen television could be hauled around in a device that is roughly the size of an umbrella.

As far as uses, the use of e-paper makes the prototype, which measures 10.7-inches wides, mostly suitable for displays of textual information. However, it is easy to see how the RollRR could also be used for things like displaying architectural or engineering drawings.

RollRR hopes to launch a crowdfunding campaign in the next few months to be able to produce enough of the devices for developers to get some units and develop more uses for them. That would be followed by a full launch for the consumer market.

Vsenn enters the modular smartphone market

vsenn_web_splash

Thus far the modular smartphone market has yet to manifest itself with actual products that consumers can buy. Google is getting very close with Project Ara and appears to be on track for a 2015 release. Google may get some competition from a new entrant to the yet to be established market. A new company called Vsenn has launched a web site indicating they are working on a modular smartphone.

The web site that surfaced for Vsenn claims the company was co-founded by a former program manager from the Nokia Android X project. Equally lacking in detail are specs for the device that is being worked on. Vsenn does indicate three modules will be swappable – the camera, battery, and processor/RAM combo. Along with the internal hardware, the company says they will offer a variety of back covers to customize the looks of the device.

Two other key concepts have been released by Vsenn. For security purposes, they will use triple layer protection to protect data on the device. A free VPN service will also be available for device owners as well as a secure cloud service. Vsenn also says they will install a vanilla version of Android on the device and they are committing to keeping it up to date for at least four years.

Working Project Ara device shown off on stage with interchangeable modules

GvLDnCl

Technology moves at a rapid pace. Nothing is a better example of that than Project Ara. What first started as seemingly a fantasy has blossomed into a legitimate product in a little over a year. In June we witnessed an Ara device get powered on for the first time. It was stuck in a bootloop, but even that was seen as a huge success. Fast forward a few months and we’re already seeing fully working prototypes.

Last week Phonebloks published a video with a fully working Ara device, and today a Google employee showed off one at Engadget’s New York event. It’s able to play Angry Birds, watch Beauty and the Beast, and most importantly, swap modules on the fly. Project Ara devices will come with an app that allows you to turn off the magnet for certain modules so you can slide them in and out.

During the presentation the Googler was able to remove a module and replace it with a heartbeat scanner. All of this was done while the device remained powered on. The heartbeat scanner really shows how amazing Project Ara can be. Imagine doctors being able to simply add medical instruments to their devices. It’s an amazing technology that gets more real every day. Are you excited for Project Ara?

It’s Motorola Jim, But Not As We Know It

motorola_solutions

You know Motorola right? They make the Moto X, the Moto 360 and the new Nexus 6? Well, yeah, not that one. The other Motorola. You see a few years back Motorola split into two companies who eventually became ‘Motorola’ and ‘Motorola Solutions’. The first Motorola (we will call it ‘our one’) makes all the Moto stuff we love and is the one recently picked up by Lenovo. The second Motorola (we will call it the ‘other one’) seems to have gone AWOL and a little bit renegade. Yes the other one is making cranked up, super elite phones for the police, the military and presumably end of the world preppers. Don’t believe me? That’s fine. Meet Motorola’s LEX 700 and LEX L10 phones. These are part of the ‘Mission Critical’ range. How cool is that name. Don’t you wish your Moto 360 was a ‘Moto Mission Critical 360’? Yeah, you do.

Both the LEX 700 and LEX L10 are designed for extreme situations and as such are built like they have just stepped out of the gym. They are big, bulky and will take a pounding. The LEX 700 runs on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. According To the listing this one is “Built for the street” and designed to withstand harsh conditions including “repeated drops on concrete”. The LEX L10 is the LTE option and designed for one-handed use (you know like when you are using the other hand to abseil down a building) with its no-slip grip design and 4.7” screen. The LEX L10 comes with triple microphones which offer enhanced voice clarity, noise reduction and echo cancellation. In addition, the LEX L10 comes with dual 1 watt front facing speakers and is equipped with ‘Covert mode’ as well as “Security enhanced Android OS”. In short, one bad mo…bile.

So there you go. if you thought Motorola were making waves this year you should seriously check out Motorola Solution’s offerings. Although the Moto 360 might look like something out of Mission Impossible the LEX L10 actually is. If you still need further proof then check out the LEX 700 video below. The music alone well tell you what these phones are designed for. Move along Moto X…nothing to see here.

LG G Watch R Available With Sprint $0 Down From November 14th

LG-G-Watch-R-AH-12

It looks like it’s another busy day for smart watches. This morning it was announced that Samsung’s Gear S is finally available to pre-order at Verizon, AT&T and Best Buy. This is the standalone watch which has its own connection. However, it does run on Samsung’s Tizen operating system and this will put many buyers immediately off. If you are one of those who are Tizen-intolerant, then you will probably already be thinking about the other watch being released this week by LG, the LG G Watch R.

This is a real sweet looking watch and personally is one of the more attractive watches available. It was announced yesterday that the LG G Watch R had gone on sale through Google Play. It was also announced yesterday that AT&T had started selling the watch online and it should be available in store today. Well to add to the ever-growing list it now seems Sprint have announced their commitment to sell. Yes, if you are a Sprint customer and had your eye on the LG G Watch R then it seems you will be able to pick up from Sprint starting next week. Sprint announced today that the device will be available to buy online and in-store starting next Friday (November 14th) and will cost $299.99 off-contract (not including tax). If you don’t want to pay so much upfront then you can get the Watch R as part of the Sprint Easy Pay program. Via this route the Watch R will cost you $25 per month (for twelve months) with nothing upfront. Not too shabby.

If you need a quick heads-up again on the LG G Watch R then it comes with a Full Circle P-OLED display. The watch is water and dust resistant (IP67), comes with a nicely sized 410 mAh battery, 22mm interchangeable strap and running on Android Wear. Don’t forget you can always check out our review of the LG G Watch R by clicking here. So are you interested in the LG G Watch R or more leaning towards the other big hitter the Samsung Gear S? Let us know which is grabbing your attention more.

The Galaxy Nexus rises from the grave running Android 5.0 Lollipop

Galaxy Nexus Google Now Phandroid

As Galaxy Nexus owners vividly remember, Google essentially abandoned the Samsung Galaxy Nexus last year with KitKat. They cited RAM and the TI processor driver limitations, but of course that didn’t stop the Android community. Last month they released updated drivers which opened the doors for KitKat, and now Lollipop ROMs. It didn’t take long.

Before the official OTA even reaches current Nexus devices the folks over at XDA have a working Lollipop ROM for the GNex. The ROM is not yet ready for primetime daily driver status, but if you want a taste of Lollipop it’s good to go. Some of the early issues include the stock camera app, mobile data issues, and a few other bugs. Hit up the link below to breathe some sweet life into your Galaxy Nexus.

This is why Google’s mysterious barges were shut down

barge

Remember those mysterious barges that Google was planning to use for…something? After popping up on our radar over a year ago they were shut down over the summer before Google could ever do anything with them. The barges were reportedly going to be state of the art floating retail stores. Like giant food trucks that can roam around and sell gadgets instead of tacos. Why did these barges get shut down before anyone could bug Google Glass while fighting off seas sickness? Fire.

Newly obtained documents show that the Coast Gaurd had significant questions about the safety of these barges. Coast Gaurd chief Robert Gauvin was most worried about the 5,000 gallons of fuel alongside “substantial amount of combustible material.” In other words, the barges were giant floating fire hazards. Google had plans for over a 1,000 people to visit the barges each day, but the contractor said it would allow no more than 150. At the end of the day Google just decided to scrap the whole idea.

Remember kids, only you can prevent Forrest fires.

The unlocked Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is now finally shipping in the US

Xperia Z3 Compact Colour Range

After it was officially announced back in September, the bite-sized Sony Xperia Z3 Compact wasn’t available to purchase in the US (from Sony, anyway) until well into October. Well, sort of.

The problem was the shipping date which originally showed the device as back-ordered with no date, then a November 3rd shipping date for a few weeks, only to slip all the way back to the November 17th. More recently, the date had since been moved up to the 10th, where today — November 7th — it’s now finally shipping to customers (see our email confirmation below).

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact shipping email

It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, but we’re just glad to finally have the US model — which is fully compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile networks — in our hand. Notice we didn’t say hands (plural) because you don’t actually need 2 to operate the device unlike some other smartphones these days. Despite the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact’s small demeanor, the phone actually features many top-of-the-line hardware specs as this year’s flagships.

Everything from a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM, 20.7MP camera — the only “downside” we found is the display which only hits 720p, but should provide a more than adequate ppi given it’s smaller 4.7-inches. Hey, if Apple can get away with it, why not Android OEMs?

Play Store Carrier Billing Support For Three Appears To Have Gone Live In The UK

Three-ThumbGoogle appears to have turned on carrier billing support for Three customers in the UK. Though the company has not yet appeared on company's page of listed partners, a reader has submitted a screenshot of the Play Store giving them the option to pay for Sons of Anarchy later on when their Three bill arrives.

Screenshot

Carrier billing isn't the most common way people pay for apps and Play Store content, but it's a convenient option for people who won't have the money they need until the end of the month or simply don't want to supply Google with a credit card.
