Android Headliner: What Does Samsung Need to Change?

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-38

Every time Samsung announces something, we seem to hear the same thing. We either here Gadget spam comments, or it looks the same as the last one. Which I can agree on both, to an extent. Samsung has done a lot of great things, both for themselves and for Android. Prior to the Galaxy S, Android was behind iOS in marketshare, but they were growing quickly. However, once the Galaxy S launched and Samsung’s “Samsunged” ads launched targeting Apple, Android never looked back. Those are still some of my favorite ads. Recently, Samsung has seen declines in profit for their mobile business. Which is expected, especially seeing how saturated the market is right now. It’s not both bad and good. Obviously investors want profits to keep rising, but it’s not like they are taking a loss each quarter. They are still bringing in more money than any other smartphone OEM, except maybe Apple.

First off we’ll start with the gadget spam stuff. Yes, Samsung announces a ton of devices each year. But the thing is, they sell, and they are supported. Obviously Samsung doesn’t support the Galaxy Ace as much as the Galaxy S, and that’s due to the Galaxy S line being a much bigger seller than the Galaxy Ace. But it’s not like Samsung is announcing all these phones that aren’t selling, or they aren’t making money off of. In fact, here’s something many don’t know. Most OEMs make more money off of low-end and mid-range smartphones than high-end ones. It’s because the majority of users don’t need a smartphone with a 1080p display, a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and all those other features. They just need/want something that works. And these lower-end devices like the Galaxy Avant (T-Mobile), do just that.

Now we’ll take a look at the more popular argument of all Samsung devices looking the same. I’ve been a big critic of Samsung’s design, I will admit that. I do think it looks kinda cheap especially after seeing the HTC One M7, and M8. But I will also say, that I can see why Samsung hasn’t done a huge overhaul on their hardware design language. Samsung is targeting the “average consumers” as we call them. That’s everyday people that don’t live and breathe Android, like those of us do here at Android Headlines. And as we’ve seen with other devices, when we see OEMs do a huge overhaul, even in software, customers go crazy because it’s too much change. A good example is the update to Windows 8, and iOS 8. Seems that 8 is the number that gets a huge overhaul, huh?

So what does Samsung change? Well, I think they need a third flagship, which we thought we had with the Galaxy Alpha. As it is clear that the Galaxy S line is not their high end device these days. That’s the Galaxy Note line. But there are those that want a smaller device, with top-of-the-line hardware. Perhaps one flagship around 4.5-inch to 4.8-inches, then another at around 5-5.2inches and the third one being the Galaxy Note at 5.5-5.9 inches. That way there’s something for everyone. I’m one of those that don’t want a huge device. Yes, I use the LG G3 which has a 5.5-inch display, but I’d much rather something around 4.7 to 5 inches in size.

What do you think Samsung needs to change to keep their profits on the up and up? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.

Featured Review: Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport (Sprint)

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-35

Samsung has a track record of putting out all kinds of crazy variants of their flagships, especially the Galaxy S series. Last year we had the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Zoom and Galaxy S4 Mini. This year we’ve got the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Active, Galaxy S5 Mini and Galaxy S5 Sport. We’re already reviewed the Galaxy S5, and the Galaxy S5 Active. Which the Galaxy S5 Sport shares a lot of the same features as the Galaxy S5 Active. Have we confused you yet? I’ve been using the Galaxy S5 Sport on Sprint’s network for the past couple of weeks, and for the most part it’s been pretty good. But this review isn’t about Sprint’s network, but about The Galaxy S5 Sport. However, I will say that this is the first device from Sprint that I’ve used since they started WiFi calling. And it does work rather well.

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-34

Specs

  • 5.1-inch 1920×1080 resolution Super AMOLED Display; IP67 water resistant

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset

  • Adreno 330 GPU

  • 2GB of RAM

  • 16GB of storage

  • Micro SD card slot

  • 144 x 74 x 8.9 mm

  • 158g

  • 2800mAh battery

  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the latest version of Touchwiz

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-22

Hardware

As far as hardware goes, it’s basically a mix of the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S5 Active. And what I mean by that is the back still has that dimpled pattern from the Galaxy S5, although it’s not the entire back. Then the front, it looks a lot like the Galaxy S5 Active, but without the extra bumpers on the corners. I actually really like how the Galaxy S5 Sport looks, especially in blue. It’s also not that slippery. Now it’s not as grippy (is that even a word?) as the Galaxy S5, but pretty close. Everything is in all the usual places, we’ve got the power button on the right side, volume rocker on the left, Micro USB port on the bottom and 3.5mm headphone jack up top. On the back is the 16MP camera, flash and heart rate monitor. Along with the speaker down at the bottom. We’ve got physical buttons on the bottom of the front. For recents, home and back. I actually really like the buttons, as they do stand out. When you’re using the Galaxy S5 in the dark, it can be a little difficult to find the capacitive buttons as they blend in so well. The heart rate monitor works the same as it has on all of Samsung’s other devices. Set it up on S Health and let it read your heart rate and it’s ready to go a few seconds later.

Battery Life

As far as battery life goes, it wasn’t perfect. After using the LG G3 for the past month or so I’d have to say that the Galaxy S5 Sport didn’t live up to the G3′s battery life, unfortunately. I was able to get around 3-4 hours on screen on wifi. Which compared to the G3, I usually get around 6 or more hours on wifi.

Software

Screenshot 2014-08-12 14.58.47 Sprint and Samsung did add some new stuff into the software this go ’round. When you unlock the device, it will look similar to just about every other device. But Sprint and Samsung have a few other apps they’ve packed in. One of those is Activity Zone. The Activity Zone shows you the Barometer, Compass, Flashlight and stopwatch. Which is good if you’re going on a hike. There is also a shortcut to the S Health app inside the Activity Zone, which is still one of my favorite apps. Screenshot 2014-08-12 14.59.13 There’s also MapMyFitness. Which is kinda like Runtastic, as it will map your runs, walks, cycling, etc. You do get 6 months of free premium membership, but after that it’s $5.99/month. So at least you get to try it out before having to shell out that cash. It is a pretty nice app for those that do a lot of running, but still hard to justify it over Runtastic, since they both have all the same features. Otherwise, all of the usual Samsung features are here like S Voice, S Health, and the Samsung App Store just to name a few. Sprint has their own fair share of bloat on here as well. We’ve got 1Weather, Amazon, eBay, Eureka Offers, Flipboard, Messaging+, Nascar Mobile 2014, NBA Gametime, NextRadio, POLARIS Office 5, Scout, Spotify, Sprint Framily Wall, Sprint ID, Sprint Music Plus, Sprint TV & Movies, Sprint Zone, and WiFi Calling.

Camera

This is literally the exact same camera as we had on the Galaxy S5. So there’s not a whole lot to say here. But I have plenty of pictures down below for you to check out.

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-16

Odds & Ends

  • Exclusives. They suck. This phone would probably sell pretty well, but it’s exclusive to Sprint. The nation’s third largest carrier, which really makes the pool of potential customers small.

  • Really digging the color on the Galaxy S5 Sport, seriously.

  • Sprint’s network. I have to add in something about it. It is getting better, little by little.

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Sport-AH-4

TL;DR

It’s a great phone, but if you don’t have coverage from Sprint, I wouldn’t recommend leaving your current service provider for this phone. Everything this phone does differently – software wise – you can do with apps on the regular Galaxy S5. If only it was available on all four carriers and in other countries.

Amazon's Free App Of The Day Is Servers Ultimate Pro, Normally $8.99

unnamed (2)

Regardless of whether you use Amazon's app store for Android, there's no denying that a free app every day is a good deal. Of course, sometimes the deals are better than usual. Today's free app of the day is Servers Ultimate Pro, which is normally $8.99.

For those not acquainted with the app, it allows users to run servers from their mobile device, with over 70 protocols supported (see the full list in the app's description), and a heaping handful of network tools.

Internal Memo Shows T-Mobile Preparing to Offer Another Limited Time Family Plan

LG-G-Flex-T-Mobile-AH-Review (20)

You may remember a few weeks ago when AT&T offered what they said was their “lowest price ever” on a family plan. Which was 4 lines with unlimited talk and text and 10GB of data to share for $160/month. Of course you knew T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere wouldn’t take that lying down. So he offered 4 lines with unlimited talk and text and 2.5GB of high-speed data each, which is throttled after that, for $100/month. That is a promotional deal that ends in September, and those that sign up will get the 2.5GB plan for about 2 years, then it drops to 1GB of high-speed data.

Well according to a leaked internal memo that TmoNews got their hands on, it looks like T-Mobile is about to expand it to 6-10 lines. With 6 lines costing $120 and each additional line being $20. You would get 2.5GB of data for this price, but that will end in January 2016, according to the memo. The plan will only be available to those with A, B or C credit and are on Simple Choice or Classic plans with at least 6 lines on their account.

So basically what it looks like here, is a way for T-Mobile to move more people off of their older plans and onto a newer one. We don’t have all the information just yet, and since this is a leak, it’s important we treat it as one. So we’ll wait for T-Mobile to make it official, probably in the next few days or so. As Legere doesn’t waste any time with this stuff.

This does sound like a great deal for those with multiple lines, especially between 6 and 10 lines. Just make sure you do read the fine print, as the 2.5GB of data is only good until January 2nd, 2016, then it drops to 1GB of data. After you hit that cap you’ll be throttled, unless the FCC has anything to say about it.

Virgin America Crew Gets A Much Deserved Upgrade In The Form Of A Google Nexus 7

Nexus-7-2-2013

It seems that most people that have flown with Virgin America have nothing but positive reviews of the in-flight ambiance. Well, it seems that Virgin America is intent on giving their customers the best in-flight experience in the business by now equipping their crew members with a slightly tweaked version of the Nexus 7 tablet dubbed, the Nexus 7 CrewPad, in order to improve efficiency.

What a shocker! The Nexus 7 tablet that we all know to function without a hitch due to the lack of bloat and always fresh software has been well received by the crew after there thirty day trial! Though this doesn’t come as a surprise to any of us who know and love Nexus devices, let’s hear why the crew likes their much needed upgrade so much. I will also show you a nice picture of the out dated joke that they were using before a little later. According to the crew, not only is the Nexus 7 faster, lighter and smaller than the bricks that they were using before, but a major reason why they like the Nexus 7 CrewPad so much is the ability to update the tablet’s software while still going about their work.

The Nexus 7 was an amazing device back in 2013 and still beats out many of the tablets that have come out this year as well. If you are interested in a smoother functioning seven inch tablet that is actually up to date and is sold here in the states you would be hard pressed to find anything that comes close. This becomes even more apparent if you intend to remain in the sub $200 range. As of this writing, a quick Google search will show you that one can be had for as low as $189 from Walmart.

The crew must have been happy to have gotten this thing off of their hands, literally.

This antiquated thing is the Motion LE 1600 Tablet PC. This is what that poor crew had to deal with for all this time. It weighed in at 3.1 pounds. Now that might not sound like a lot but imagine carrying this thing around for the whole day, I bet that doesn’t sound like fun. In comparison, the nexus 7 2013 model only weighs 0.64lbs. We should also remember that these people are on their feet for the whole day so it must have been brutal. If the weight wasn’t enough to make you understand how painful this might have been for the crew, these specs below might.
