Netflix testing privacy mode, for your incognito viewing needs

Netflix Incognito Privacy Mode

Content curation and media recommendations, two factors that are crucial to the success of many online streaming services. Netflix relies heavily on a recommendations model to serve you new movies and TV shows based on your viewing history. What about those few shows you watched that were not of your normal tastes, why would you want recommendations based on those?

Netflix is testing a new feature that lets you go ‘off the record,’ a private viewing mode that does not register your viewing decisions into your history, doesn’t display on your connected Facebook profile and, most importantly, does not count toward your future recommendations.

The feature has been pushed out to a small group of users for testing, a process that could take months before they can even determine if this should be a permanent feature of the service. That’s right, the company’s new director of corporate communications and technology, Cliff Edwards says that “Privacy Mode” is just a test, that it may not ever go live for all users.

chromecast aa netflix control

Netflix rather recently introduced profiles within accounts. Profiles have been a great way to keep the children’s shows separate from ‘mom & dad’s’ shows, at least as far as viewing history and recommendations go. With up to five profiles per account, users can even create a specific profile for their home viewing and another profile for their Android device, if those happen to be different watching habits.

Private viewing mode would allow users to further control recommendations, but only if they remember to go incognito before pressing play. No word yet if shows watched in privacy mode can then easily be marked as viewed, should they prove worthy of going into your viewing history.

Surely, with your entirely predictable and wholesome viewing habits, you have no need for a privacy mode, right?!?

Android Epic App Battles: Instagram V.S. Snapchat

AH Epic App Battles 1.0

In this week’s app battle we’re putting two of the most popular social apps head to head to see who reigns supreme. Snapchat V.S. Instagram. Both offer their niche and have compelling features to offer their wealth of users, and both apps take a different approach to the social aspect of photo sharing, but which one has the better setup? Who’s the favorite? That’s what this app battle aims to find out. As always we’ll break down a few features from each app to glaze over what they have to offer, and then we’ll let you guys decide in the G+ comments who deserves to be crowned king(or queen)of the social photo applications.

InstagramInstagram

Instagram is a well known application for its popularity on the iOS platform, but finally made the jump to Android sometime ago. Some people use it to be social while others like it more for the filter features that one can apply to their photos, but no matter the reason you chose Instagram chances are you use it with pride. Instagram lets you set up an account(for free of course)and share all the photos you want with your friends, family, and followers. You can apply tons of different filter effects to your pictures and turn them into works of art so that others can share in the experience of the pictures you take. Once you’re done sharing a photo with your Instagram crowd, Instagram makes it easy to upload and share those photos to your other social streams like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Tumblr. Like a particular photo and want to let the person you’re following know you appreciate the picture? Easy, Instagram lets you like photos and even comment on them. Likewise, your followers can do the same with your photos too. You can unload an unlimited amount of pictures without any restraints, and you can either just share stuff to your stream so that followers will see it upon opening their feeds, or you can share photos and videos directly with people that follow you. If you like to take pictures that last, with ability to go back and remember the memories fondly any time you view them, Instagram is the way to go.

SnapchatSnapchat

Snapchat is a whole other beast. This popular social photo app came out of nowhere and took the mobile world by storm. It’s quite different from Instagram though as it banks its popularity on the action of snapping photos anytime anywhere that you can add captions to and share with specific people, and once they’ve viewed that photo and after they close the photo out it completely disappears, for good. That is unless they take a screenshot of it. This unique way of sharing makes it so that users can feel comfortable about sharing potentially embarrassing photos(and fun ones too obviously)with a certain person or group of people that they’re friends with on Snapchat, and then not have to worry about the picture sticking around as the share is a one time deal. Snapchat also lets users share videos, with the same caption capabilities of course. The real uniqueness comes from Snapchat’s ability to alert users if the person that they’re sharing photos or videos with is also present and using Snapchat at the same time. If this scenario occurs, then users will be able to open up a video call and chat face to face or just simply share live video. Snapchat is also free to use, and we suppose it technically also offers unlimited uploads since the snaps disappear after the person that users share them with view them.

So who deserves to be crowned king? Is Instagram worthy of a “best social photo app” title? Or is Snapchat the one that takes the cake? Leave your thoughts about the winner in the comments on our Google+ post.

How long can the Galaxy S5 Ultra Power Saving Mode extend battery life?

Samsung’s enthusiasm over their Galaxy S5′s Ultra Power Saving Mode has been apparent since the device’s announcement. This mode is said to do wonders with battery life, often extending it by multiple days, something that is simply unheard of in today’s smartphones. Samsung has decided to offer us their own test, proving Ultra Power Saving Mode can really keep a Galaxy S5 alive.

The Korean manufacturer’s test consisted on trying to keep a smartphone alive for the duration of a road trip going from coast to coast. All without recharging the smartphone a single time. This may prove to be the ultimate test, and Samsung’s device passed it. The device survived 7 days, in which 86 text messages were sent, 119 pictures were taken, over 4 minutes of video were recorded and over 16 minutes of talk time were used.

sony xperia z ultra aa battery power saving

In Ultra Power Saving Mode, the screen goes into a greyscale mode, turns off WiFi and bluetooth, as well as killing data while the display is off. It also restricts the user from using a plethora of apps, leaving only a few messaging essentials and the browser active. (By the way, there is a way for root users to activate more apps in Ultra Power Saving Mode, which you can read more about in our UPSM Manager article.)

This is quite the feat, and you can see a summarized video of this test in the video above. Of course, we are not sure if Samsung cheated (even if a little) or not, but it seems like a reasonable deed considering what Ultra Power Saving Mode does. The user would sacrifice pretty much all non-essential features!

We wonder how accurate these results really are. Those of you who have tested this Galaxy S5 feature could probably give us an idea of how well it works!

Android Game Of The Week: Leo’s Fortune

Leo's Fortune

Puzzle/Platformers are a long time favorite among the mobile gaming world, and for good reason. Especially when you take a look at games like Leo’s Fortune. This game takes everything about the puzzle/platformer genre and shows just how awesome it can truly be. It seems to have every inch covered when it comes to great game elements. It has stunning visuals(no joke, when I say stunning I really mean stunning)plenty of great puzzles that will stretch your mind a little bit and overall the most important element, it’s amazingly fun. Of course it also brings in other cool factors like hilarious voice acting of the little fuzzy fluff Leopold, but that could be considered a great little bonus.

In this awesome platforming adventure, Leo has had his fortune of gold stolen right our from under his bushy little mustache and it’s your job to help him track down the thieves and get the fortune back. Help Leo traverse through lush forests of mossy green wonder and even through pirate cities that could be laden with traps and all manner of devilish affair. There are 24 levels of which you’ll need to complete to retrieve Leo’s fortune for him, and once you have completed those you will unlock hard mode which will truly test your skills. The devs of Leo’s Fortune challenge you to attempt beating each and every level on hard mode without dying, which they refer to as a feat that is seldom achieved by gamers of the platforming adventure.

While this game is truly a masterpiece all its own, added value come through features like Google Play Games services which ads leaderboards and achievements to the mix so you can add to your gamer status, and cloud saves linked to your Google account so you can pick up and play across devices without any issue. Leo’s Fortune also supports gamepads so you can choose to stick with the traditional touch screen controls or you can hook up a Bluetooth gamepad to control things a little more like a console game. Some of the reviews state that Leo’s Fortune is a little bit short and while that may be true, it’s well worth every penny and is a game that will not fail at delighting those who play it. Dig around for $4.99 and grab a copy of Leo’s Fortune, you won’t be disappointed.

NVIDIA will announce the Shield Tablet on July 22nd alongside a wireless controller

NVIDIA Shield tablet wireless controller

We know an NVIDIA Shield tablet is on the way, and it looks like it’ll be announced sooner rather than later. A set of leaked images and information points towards the gaming tablet being announced on July 22nd in time for a late summer/early fall rollout to consumers.

According to the images, the Shield Tablet will indeed be a powerful tablet paired with a wireless controller instead of the all-in-one package we got with the original Shield device. The tablet sports an NVIDIA K1 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 1920 x 1200 8-inch screen, and a 5 megapixel front-facing cam. The 16 GB model with WiFi only will run $299, and the 32 GB, LTE-enabled version will cost $399. Either option should be more than capable of handling even the most demanding games available on Android.

Aside from the tablet, NVIDIA is going to push the wireless controller accessory to complement playing games on the device. The controller will cost $59 and is supposedly significantly more responsive than typical Bluetooth controllers, so it may not be a universal Bluetooth accessory. That’s a bummer if you were planning on getting just the controller for another device.

With an announcement on the 22nd and a rollout slated to begin on July 29th in the US and Canada, you can expect more official news on the Shield tablet soon.

Top Android Homescreen July 18th Edition: Classic

classic_original Sometimes in the world of customization and themeing within Android, we can forget that beauty and style can come out of the simplest or most minimalist design setups. This is true with this weeks homescreen, titled simply, Classic. Created by an individual and member of mycolorscreen.com,(where we find all our picks)named Corrado27, Classic takes the Android homescreen and gives it a simple yet stylish and functional design that could be looked at as completely understated. There is a place for the truly intricate and complex designs that people come up with, and some of the really gorgeous ones definitely deserve some praise and have been some of my favorites. Classic though, is just one of those “classically good looking” designs that shouldn’t be overlooked. Classic was created using multiple apps and widgets, and Corrado27 was kind enough to post all the details of his build setup for this homescreen at the mycolorscreen page. Make sure to head there and “zoom” the image of the theme, and hit the love button to give Corrado27 some credit. You can re-create this homescreen setup yourself if you really enjoy it and have a love for the simple yet stylish designs. First you’ll need to download a couple apps to make that happen. Make sure to grab Apex Launcher Pro, although NOVA Prime works too as it’s pretty similar to Apex Pro. You also want to be sure to download and install Zooper Pro. That’s it, two simple apps is all you’ll need. You can grab the actual instructions off of Corrado27′s page for this theme(which you can find at the source link below), and he also has the dropbox link posted for the Zooper widget files you’ll need as well, which also includes the wallpaper if you want to use that although you can mix that part up if you prefer. Happy themeing!

Netflix tests new ‘incognito mode’ that could keep your embarrassing viewing habits private

Netflix DSC06185

If you’ve been dying to experiment with My Little Pony, but were simply too embarrassed everyone on your Netflix account would think less of you, hope may loom on the horizon.

In an interview with GigaOM , a Netflix spokesperson revealed the streaming video service is currently testing a new feature tailored to those who wish to keep their viewing habits private. It’s called “Privacy Mode” and the option will prevent recently watched movies or shows out of their recently viewed list. It’s hard to imagine how Netflix didn’t think of this sooner. Just keep in mind selecting the option also means Netflix will no longer be able to recommend videos based on what you watch, a perk we’re sure many of you wouldn’t mind forfeiting.

Of course, this new feature is only in its testing phase and could be scrapped altogether depending on feedback. In an age where everything we do online is being watched and tracked, having the option for added privacy is always a good thing.

NVIDIA Shield Tablet and Controller leaked in full glory

shield-tablet-leak-1

NVIDIA is getting ready to announce its new Shield products, but it seems they just can’t stay away from leaksters’ hands. A new set of slides has hit the internet with all the details you could ever ask for. The second-generation Shield launch is rumored to include a Shield Tablet and Shield Controller.

The processor manufacturer was not the most successful at launching the NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming device. This could have triggered their desire to alter the form factor and strategy. Instead of a handheld gaming platform, the new NVIDIA Shield set-up consists of two pieces. The tablet could work as a standalone device, designed for both gaming and daily tasks. Meanwhile, the controller will be available when you are ready for game time.

Let’s start by taking a look at the rumored 8-inch pad. The NVIDIA Shield Tablet is said to come with 1080p display, a powerful Tegra K1 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16-32 GB of internal storage, 5 MP cameras (both), Bluetooth 4.0 and a microSD slot. There will be WiFi and WiFi+LTE versions, priced at $299 and $399 accordingly.

shield-tablet-leak-2 shield-tablet-leak-3

The interesting part here is the remote, which is now completely unattached to the Shield gaming device. It’s quite an interesting concept, and we must say it’s not a bad idea. After all, this could make for a much more flexible experience. Having to carry and deal with the controller at all times is simply not the most convenient way to go about things.

The controller will cost only $59 and feature WiFi Direct connectivity, ensuring a strong and speedy connection. It also comes packed with a microphone and all the buttons and joysticks you can expect on a good gaming pad. In essence, it looks much like the controller we saw in the NVIDIA Shield, but unattached and with what looks like a much more ergonomic build.

shield-tablet-leak-6

Both devices are rumored to go on sale this July 29th, so we probably won’t be waiting much longer for the official announcement. Europeans may have to wait a bit more, though, with a release date rumored to be set on August 14th. The rollout will continue in other markets throughout the Fall.

Do keep in mind these are all rumors and leaks. Nothing is official until it is announced, no matter how credible and consistent the leaks are. We will be sure to let you know all the details as soon as they come!

Nvidia Comes In Hot With The Shield Tablet Powered By Tegra k1 For $299

NVIDIA-SHIELD-Tablet-2

Just yesterday we reported on a leaked image of Nvidia’s potential new Shield device, the Nvidia Shield tablet, which looked to have two front facing speakers, a front camera and overall great design to it that could have either been the successor to the original Nvidia Shield or the new direction Nvidia was taking after their Tegra Note tablet that released last year. Today we have some follow up details for that as Nvidia has just lifted the curtain on the Shield tablet complete with possible accessories if one should want them, in the form of a Shield Controller for playing games and a shield cover(simply a case)to help you keep it protected.

Nvidia stated that they would no longer be focusing on putting their chips within smartphones and would focus more on the gaming and auto industries when it comes to Android, and it looks like this is one of their products to keep true to that statement. Clarification lets us know that the Nvidia Shield Tablet will not be a replacement for the Shield but a new addition to the Shield family. On top of that, the Nvidia Shield Tablet and the accompanying wireless Shield controller and Shield cover, will all be going on sale in the U.S. starting July 29th. The tablet starts at $299 for the 16GB wifi only model, but you can up your storage space and get the capability of added LTE connection support by picking up the 32GB LTE model for $399.

The Shield Cover will cost an additional $39 for those that want it, and an absolute must if you want to take full advantage of what the Shield Tablet has to offer, is the Shield wireless controller which will cost an additional $59. All told, you’re looking at spending around $460 if you want just the 32GB tablet and controller setup, a price that would also get you a PS4 and a second controller. However if you already have a console and are in need of a tablet that can not only work as your every day tablet, but also provide you with some of the best specs a tablet can for gaming, then you may want to consider the Shield tablet from Nvidia. This proves to be leagues ahead of the original Shield, and because it can double as your actual tablet, the higher cost seems to be worth it. Consider the specs too and Nvidia could have a winner on their hands here.

Ok, so lets talk specs. What’s inside? For starters and probably the most obvious, is the storage because we already listed it. 16GB, or 32GB. Your choice. Both will have WiFi capabilities but only the 32GB model will come with LTE. Next, is the processing power. This baby is working with the Nvidia Tegra K1 CPU under the hood with 192 Cuda cores for graphics processing, and it has 2GB of RAM as well as the DiectStylus setup we saw from the Tegra Note 7 last year. The screen size is 8-inches and comes in with Full HD resolution, a detail that shouldn’t surprise anyone with Nvidia’s passion for high quality gaming. You’re also looking at Bluetooth 4.0 LE and expandable storage via the microSD card slot with support for up to a 128GB card should you need more space. For someone like me who doesn’t want to spend the extra $100 on the 32GB model, an easy work around is just to put a 16GB card into the 16GB model and that takes care of the 32GB that I was really wanting. This versatility will make for more happy gamers, as some of the games one can play on a tablet are… well, relatively HUGE.

Nvidia has also added 5MP cameras on both the front AND the back, so even though you may not take pictures with this tablet very often, that 5MP front facing camera should do very nicely for the hangouts calls or other types of video chat options that Android supports. This device should be running Android 4.4+ out of the box but there’s no confirmation on that yet, but as far as updates to the device goes, they will come straight from Nvidia and if their updates via the Shield Tablet are anything like their graphics drivers updates for the PC, they should come in quickly. The Shield Tablet is also 4K UHD ready when it comes to video playback compatibility, and one should expect lots of awesomeness through the game streaming with games from Steam, and Nvidia’s cloud based gaming platform GRID. After all that, all I can say is damn… I need to have this.

Motorola Moto X at least $100 off right now

Moto X

As the Motorola Moto X+1 marches ever closer to its release, we’ve seen a number of promotions for the Moto X, bringing the price down lower and lower. Now Motorola is back at it, this time offering $100 off for the 16GB model or $125 off for the 32GB and 64GB variants. To get in on the deal you’ll need to apply the “MBXISMOT” coupon code at check out, which brings the pricing down to $299.99, $324.99 and $374.99 respectively.

The Moto X might be far from a specs-monster at this point, but there’s no denying that it is a solid device and is certainly worth what Motorola is asking. On the other hand, those that are looking for the best that Motorola has to offer might be better off waiting for the Moto X+1.

What do you think, anyone planning on picking up the Moto X at rock-bottom pricing ahead of the X+1’s arrival later this summer? If this promo does seem up your alley you’ll need to act quick, as it will officially expire on the 23rd of July.

Gear Live And G Watch Currently Have No Charging Cradle Replacement Options

AH Samsung Gear Live 1.6

Android Wear is certainly one of the more exciting things to come out of Google this year, and probably the most talked about category to come out of the wearables scene. However exciting Android wear(and the two devices that make up the platform so far)is though, both devices and Android Wear itself aren’t without their faults. People have been complaining about various issues with both manufacturers, ranging from problems with connecting to the issue with Samsung’s Gear Live build quality problems. The most recent issue making its rounds on the web though is the complete lack of a way to purchase or even get a hold of any extra charger combos for the Gear Live and the G Watch.

If you already own either the LG G Watch or the Samsung Gear Live you are familiar with the Charging Cradle/Micro USB charger combo that comes with each setup. Each is slightly different from each other but they both also have a couple of things in common. They both use a set of pogo pins to connect to the watch, which docks onto the cradle to juice up the device. There are benefits and problems with this setup but the biggest issue people are having right now is that since this charging setup is proprietary, there is no way to charge your watch once the battery dies if you have either lost your dock/cradle, or it’s broken. You’d think this sort of gross oversight would be something that both manufacturers would have considered and planned to be prepared for. If you thought that though, well then you’d be wrong.

According to users of both sets of Android Wear smartwatches on a reddit thread started over this particular problem, there is currently no way to grab yourself an extra charging cradle. The good news at least for Gear Live owners it seems is that Samsung is on track to begin selling their cradle for the Gear Live on their own website, as well as through Best Buy. We’ll assume this means the physical brick and mortar locations as well as Best Buy’s online web store. For the time being though until both sets of users can pick up a replacement cradle/dock, it’s best to protect your current unit like your life depends on it, unless you care not about being without your watch once the battery goes dead.

HTC to enter the smartwatch game, according to new leaked photo

HTC Watch

Before everyone starts yelling the F-word, (“Fake,” of course, not ****), it seems that the above picture is of an upcoming HTC smartwatch. The information on the screen, as most of you will notice, is fake, as it appears to have some elements of Sense 6 — the device will feature Android Wear, and Android Wear devices will not have any manufacturer skins.

However, according to @evleaks, who has some street cred regarding accuracy of his past leaks, the hardware is a “100% faithful reproduction.” (Of course, he could have left the screen blank, as to not suggest what the screen will look like/not look like, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?)

As one @evleaks follower pointed out, it looks a bit like a Pebble Steel with Android Wear. He didn’t seem to pleased with that, but I don’t really have any issues with it. The Pebble Steel was hailed for aesthetics — if this watch ends up looking anything like it, I don’t think that’ll necessarily be a bad thing. However, many would probably like to see a circular screen on the device (hello, Moto 360).

More to come on this, obviously, so stay tuned.

Play Store Revenue To Pass Up Apple’s App Store Come 2018

Play-Store-AH

Think back to just a few years ago and Google’s Android operating system may have actually had a smaller user base than that of Apple’s iOS. That has since changed but the Play Store still lags behind the App store in terms of profitability. The Play Store at this point has already surpassed the App Store in sheer number of app downloads, a factor that is most likely due in large part to the higher number of Android users compare to those that use iOS devices now. Google and the Play Store are closing on Apple’s profits from apps though, Google is bridging the gap and within just a few short years, analysts are predicting that Google and the Play Store will have surpassed Apple and the App’s Store’s profit numbers.

Freemium apps continue to be the driving force of app download numbers for Google, and reports from App Annie are showing that iOS users are starting to follow suit having downloaded and installed fewer paid apps so far this year compared to 2013. While Apple users still prefer paid apps more to those of the freemium nature, the fact that the use of freemium is growing on Apple and is trending to continue, will play a role in how Google and Android will overtake Apple’s profit numbers to become the most profitable app store out there.

There is no debate that Google and Android have a larger marketshare, with over 80% of the market in emerging regions and it’s for those reasons mostly that Google will be able to take the crown for most profitable app store in a few years. The larger user base of Android devices paired with fewer and fewer iOS usres choosing to pay for apps(with paid apps being Apple’s bread and butter, and the reason they have been able to stay on top), there’s nothing to stop Google and the Play Store from generating the most revenue from apps and games. Other factors play a role here too though as it’s not just a numbers game with amount of users, that is simply the biggest reason. Android has more developers willing to port apps over from iOS and Android is seeing more content developed for the platform now that it’s easier to develop for current and older versions of the OS compared to just a couple years ago.
