Rumor: Samsung Z1 Tizen Smartphone Will Launch Next Month And Under $90

Samsung-Logos-AH-2

Only a few hours ago came the news that Samsung are planning to launch another Tizen powered digital camera dubbed the NX500 at CES 2015 in January. In today’s article, it was commented how Tizen has not made its way onto a Samsung smartphone as of yet. Well, the latest news is that this seems about to change very soon. The rumors surrounding a Tizen powered smartphone have been going around for a long time now. It was only last month that we reported on a rumor Samsung was working on a low-end Tizen smartphone. If true, this was presumed to be something Samsung could use to finally offer a realistic alternative to Android One and their cheaper devices. Earlier Tizen rumors suggested that Samsung might launch Tizen (in smartphone form) on a more high-end device and this was rumored to be on a device dubbed ‘Samsung Z’ or something like this.

Well, the current news is that a mixture of these two rumors might be the actual truth. The Korea Economic Daily (source link below) has reported that Samsung are going to release a Tizen powered smartphone in January. In terms of specifics (and according to the reports), this will be a low-end device. In terms of its name, the device will be called Samsung Z1. It is being reported that the Z1 will offer a 4″ display with an 800 x 480 resolution. Inside the device will come with 512MB RAM and powered by a dual-core Spreadtrum processor (clocking at 1.2GHz). In terms of cameras, the Z1 will come with a 3.2MP rear shooter along with a VGA front-facing camera. Additional features worth noting include 3G, WiFi, dual-SIM and obviously running on Tizen OS.

Of course, the most interesting part of today’s rumor will be the price. According to the reports the Samsung Z1 will go on sale in India (first) on January 18th and will be available for less than 100,000 Korean Won. This equates to less than $90. The Korea Economic Daily claims the information comes from a Samsung source. What do you reckon? Is the Samsung Tizen Phone finally upon us? Are you looking forward to the Samsung Z1? Let us know your thoughts.

Android 5.0.2 For The Nexus 7 2012 WiFi Pushed To AOSP And Changelog Available

If you currently own the Google Nexus 7 2012 WiFi edition then it has been an eventful 24 hours and an uneventful week for the device. That is because roughly about a week ago an Android 5.0+ (Lollipop) update began being pushed out to Nexus devices. This update was an incremental update and brought the devices up from Android 5.0 to Android 5.0.1. This was largely considered to be a bug fix update. However, it seems the Nexus 7 2012 WiFi for some reason was one of the only Nexus devices to not receive the incremental update. At the time, it was not clear as to why the Nexus 7 was not receiving the update, but that did explain the uneventful week. However, in terms of the eventful 24 hours, the Nexus 7 has since received a Lollipop update in the form of a factory image going live for the device. What was interesting though was this update did not bring the Nexus 7 up to Android 5.0.1 but instead leapfrogged the current Nexus update and brought the device to Android 5.0.2.

Again, at the time it was not clear as to why the Nexus 7 was jumping passed the 5.0.1 update and landing on the 5.0.2 update and it was also not clear if this marked the beginning of another imminent incremental update to all the other Nexus devices. However, it now does seem that this is not the case and the Nexus 7 2012 Android 5.0.2 update is likely to be a device specific update. As mentioned the factory image went live yesterday and now it also seems to have hit the AOSP in code form. As such the OTA should have either already hit your device or at least be en-route. To add to this, the changelog has also now become available and as expected does seem to be largely a bug fix update.

The 5.0.2 update brings the Nexus 7 up to build number LRX22G and fixes a number of issues on the Nexus 7. The biggest of these fixes seems to be related to an issue with the tablet’s storage. In addition, another issue being fixed is in relation to the alarm on the device. This alarm fix in particular seems to be two-fold with one fix being “Tune delivery and batching of alarms” and the second one “Properly recognize repeating wakeup alarms”. If you are interested to see what else the changelog fixes then you can read the changelog in full by clicking the source link below. If you have not yet received your update then you can also download the factory image by clicking here. This is a direct download from Google. Have you already seen the OTA or flashed the image? Were there any of interesting fixes that you have noticed? Let us know.

Google Nexus 4 Android 5.0+ Lollipop Update Will Not Include New Camera Features

AH-Nexus-4-14

If you are a Nexus owner then the last few weeks have been quite eventful for you. This is in respect of the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) update which has been landing. All the Nexus range does seem to have been updated now although there was quite massive discrepancies on when different Nexus devices received the update. This was probably the first sign that although they are all Nexus devices, they are not necessarily all equal Nexus devices. This leads us on to today’s news. If you are a Google Nexus 4 owner then you might be interested to know that not all the features sent out in the Lollipop update will be on their way to your device.

The Nexus 4 Android 5.0 update landed back on November 14th. That said, the Nexus 4 was one of the later devices to receive the Android 5.0.1 update which only landed on December 10th. One of the newly added features to come on Lollipop was enhancements to the camera functions compared to KitKat. These included a new API update which offered greater control and access to camera features like the output of full RAW files and full manual camera controls. However, it now seems that these additional camera features will not be available on the Nexus 4.

The new features were bundled into the new ‘Camera2 API’ and a number of Nexus 4 owners were noted asking the question on the Google Developers Issue Tracker site as to whether their device will receive the update. In what seems to be an official response from a Google employee, the reply post stated very clearly that the Nexus 4 will not include the additional camera features “Unfortunately, the Nexus 4 will not be updated beyond LEGACY camera2 level support”. The post then went on to further explain this is due to “Its hardware and firmware were not designed to support the full feature set provided by camera2, including manual controls and DNG support, and such support cannot be added retroactively to it”. It is probably also worth noting that the post also advised that the Google Nexus 9 will receive the manual control support but not the RAW file support. The post did advise that both the Nexus 5 and 6 will come with full support of the new features. You can read the Google response in full by clicking the source link below. It is understandable that due to the age of the Nexus 4 that all features might not be compatible, but it is never nice to hear your device will not be receiving certain features. Are you a Nexus 4 owner? Do you mind not receiving the Camera2 API? Let us know.

Featured Review: HTC RE Camera

HTC-Re-Camera-AH-8

We’ve been saying for a while that these smartphone OEMs are going to need to branch out and put out other products in other categories. Which Samsung, Sony and LG already have that as Samsung makes just about anything you can think of. Sony does TV’s, cameras, and a ton of other things, and LG also has TV’s and appliances. But for HTC and Motorola, smartphones are their bread and butter. However with the market so saturated and specs not really jumping much lately, it’s time to look at other product categories. And HTC did that this year with the RE Camera.

Back in October, HTC invited us to their Double Exposure event. Just going by the name, we pretty much figured it was going to be about a camera, or cameras. And it was. We got the HTC Desire Eye as well as the RE Camera. For me, the more exciting thing was the RE Camera. It’s just something different from HTC. We’ve said for quite a while that HTC really does great things with their cameras, and its software. Sure the UltraPixel thing wasn’t a good example, but otherwise, HTC does do great things with cameras. So I was excited about the RE Camera. Basically it’s a small handheld camera, think GoPro, but a bit cheaper, and likely less functionality.

Editor’s Note: Before we dive to deep into this review, it’s important that we make a few things known here. We’ve been using the HTC RE Camera for a little over a week now, paired with a Moto X and a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge.

HTC-Re-Camera-AH-5

Hardware

The RE Camera is a $199 16-megapixel camera that’s capable of taking stills, video and slow-motion video (we’ve got samples of all three further down in this post). It also has an ultra wide angle lens, about 146-degrees. Which can take some pretty awesome pictures. It’s shaped like an asthma inhaler itself. So not the best looking camera out there, but better looking then the GoPro. Although with cameras, does it really matter how it looks? I rather it take amazing pictures myself.

HTC-Re-Camera-AH-2

We also have a Tripod mount on the RE Camera as well as a microSD card slot on the bottom, which can hold up to 128GB. Our review unit came with a 8GB microSD card installed, no word on whether that comes with every unit sold or not though. There is a button on the front which toggles slow-motion, and on the back you’ve got a big shutter button. There’s a light on the top that’s used for indicating that it’s recording, and two on the front for pairing and charging the thing.

Software

Screenshot 2014-12-18 12.03.28

There’s not much to the software here. It’s basically just the RE Camera app. Which works pretty good most of the time. But there have been times where it was a little slow to connect via Bluetooth in the app. I don’t think that’s the phone’s fault since I had it connected to two different phones and both had the same issue. Hopefully that is fixed in a software update though. In the app you have your viewfinder, so you can see what the camera is looking at, as well as a shutter button. You can also switch from taking stills, video and slow motion video. There’s also all your settings inside.

In the settings, you can disconnect the RE, connect another RE, and change the camera settings, backup and advanced settings. For video it can do 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 30fps. While pictures it can do 16MP at a 4:3 aspect ratio, 12MP at 16:9 and 8.3MP at 16:9, you can also toggle on/off the Ultra-Wide Angle. As far as backing up, you can only back up to your phone. Which if you then have Dropbox installed with auto-upload enabled you are able to go ahead and auto-upload all of those pictures to your Dropbox account, which is pretty sweet too.

All in all, the app works as intended, and there’s not much to change here, except for the amount of time it takes to connect to the RE, that’s really the only issue I have with it.

Battery Life

I have yet to kill this thing. There’s nothing I can really show for battery life as there’s no stats or anything. But it can do about an hour of video before needing to be recharged, which is actually better then my Sony RX100.

Camera

HTC-Re-Camera-AH-7

So here’s the important part, the camera. So there’s no auto focus on the RE which is perfectly fine, just don’t expect to get some nice macro shots with the camera. As far as taking pictures outdoors and such, it works pretty well, and I was able to get a whole bunch of awesome shots out of it, which are in the gallery below. It takes pretty decent video as well. And the slow-motion is pretty sweet. It obviously won’t replace your DSLR or powerful point-and-shoot for camera. But for a camera that you can take into the poor, or into a blizzard and use, it’s pretty damn good.

Final Thoughts

The RE Camera is a great first generation product from HTC. As with any first generation product, there are some quirks, and many of which have been fixed (so I didn’t mention them in the review). If you’re into taking adventures or hiking or something, the RE Camera would be great for mounting onto your backpack and recording it all. But if you’re just looking to grab pictures, you’ll want to get a regular camera, at least a point-and-shoot. That said, I’m very excited to see what HTC does with the RE camera next year.

The RE Camera is available at retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon for $199, at the time of writing this review.
