Don’t Miss These Android Stories: September 11, 2015

We had another great week here at DL, thanks to the arrival of the Moto X Pure Edition on our doorstep, Android Pay in our phone wallets, and Apple as comic relief of itself. Seriously, it might have been short, but it was action packed.

We unboxed the Moto X Pure, tested it on a variety of networks, and had plenty of thoughts to share about it during the DL Show. Android Pay is here and available for many, just be aware that it has some new things you will have to get used to. And Apple, oh Apple. They brought us new phones and colors and pink and TV boxes and giant, massive, ridiculously oversized, iPads.

It was great, all of it. Be sure to catch up if you missed anything.

Final reminder – be sure to click the link above and join the DL Football Eliminator. You can win a free phone just by picking 17 winners in a row.

Facebook Updates News Feed Customization Options for a Better Experience

An update for Facebook to launch in the “coming weeks” will bring updated controls over what you see on the News Feed. This is pretty important, if you are the type of person who hates seeing nothing but memes and silly videos show up at the top of the Facebook page.

Now, you can customize who you see first on News Feed, reconnect with people you have unfollowed (why would I do that?), and discover new pages that likely post nothing but spam. The list of new settings can be found by clicking on the “More” option near the settings menu.

Not only can you select which friends to see first on News Feed, but pages as well. You know, like Droid Life. It’s always good to see what we’ve been posting onto Facebook.

As stated, this update is available today for iOS, and will be made available to Android users in the coming weeks.

Here is a Moto X Pure Edition Running on Project Fi

The Moto X Pure Edition is a lot like Google’s Nexus 6 in that it not only is made by Motorola, but it’s an unlocked device that works on every major US carrier in the US. This is about as universal as it gets for an Android phone in terms of connectivity. With that in mind, you all know that the Nexus 6 is Google’s only officially support Project Fi device, right? Well, in theory, shouldn’t the Moto X Pure Edition, with its awesome network compatibility that is very similar to the Nexus 6’s, technically be able to work with Google’s Project Fi too? See where I’m going here?

Yes, we decided to see if it would work. We took an unactivated Project Fi SIM and slapped it in a Moto X Pure Edition. Not only does it seem to be working, but I’m actually not running into any issues at all at this point.

As you will see in the video below, the Moto X Pure Edition, with the Project Fi app installed, recognized the Project Fi SIM, asked if I wanted to activate it, then activated it, before letting me know that Fi would assign me a phone number over the next 10 minutes. After that happened, I have found that I can make/receive calls, use LTE data, browse the web, listen to music, and chat with the crew on Hangouts. I even placed a call with WiFi on, toggled WiFi off, and hung on to the call. I also placed a call and was able to still browse the web, showing that this phone is capable of simultaneous voice and data, in certain situations.

Now, there isn’t a way to tell if calls placed with WiFi connected are actual WiFi calls like you would see on the Nexus 6, so I can’t confirm that you are able to make WiFi calls and go through that whole seamless hand-off that Fi enables. I also don’t know if this will connect to Sprint and then switch to T-Mobile as I bounce around Portland. I do know that it will connect just fine to T-Mobile because it said it was on T-Mobile before realizing I had a Fi SIM in the phone. What I’m getting it, is that there are a lot of questions here that we just don’t have official answers for at this time. We’ll do what we can to test all of this stuff.

And keep in mind that the Moto X Pure Edition isn’t officially supported with Project Fi, so who knows if Google will continue to let this work or other phones activate or if you will see the full benefits of Fi. This post is not me saying, “Yes, the Moto X Pure Edition is supported on Project Fi and you should go try it yourself!”

Still, this is quite exciting should Google say, “Yeah, that’s cool. Bring your Moto X Pure Editions to Fi.”

SlickWraps Intros Justin Maller ‘Hero’ Skins for Android Devices

SlickWraps, the creators of fine smart device skins, has a new series of Hero skins to choose from, created by none other than Justin Maller. You have likely seen Maller’s work during your time on the Internet, as our friend MKBHD tends to show off his work quite often. He specializes in sometimes triangular, bright art that transforms nicely into wallpapers and other various creations.

For options, the Hero Series offers a few of the more well-known superhero characters, such as Captain America, Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. These skins are available for devices such as the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, iPhone, One M9, Nexus 6, and many more. You can even purchase the skins for your gaming console or laptop.

Each skin appears to be priced at $25, and who knows much or if any portion of that needs to go to DC or Marvel. But regardless of that, SlickWraps skins are always quite nice, at least when we tried them, and there’s nothing like decking your phone out in Iron Man skins.

Check it out.

Lumoid Lets You Test a Pack of Android Wear Devices for $25

A smartwatch can be an expensive investment, one that you may not be too sure about quite yet, especially when you don’t have the opportunity to try it out before you purchase. Thanks to Lumoid, that all changes, as they have a system that allows you to try basically any Android Wear device for a 2-week period, then send it back if you don’t want to keep it.

Lumoid allows you to select up to 4 smartwatches to try out during a 2-week period, and the only cost is $25. If you decide to keep one of the watches, that $25 goes toward your smartwatch purchase, essentially making your 2-week trial period free of charge. Just be sure to send back the watches you do not wish to keep. If you end up not keeping any of the devices, the $25 is kept by Lumoid as a “trial fee.”

As for Lumoid’s smartwatch selection to choose from, it could use some updating. During IFA, we saw a ton of new Android Wear devices launched, so it will take time for Lumoid to stock up on all of the latest hardware available. For now, you can try out an ASUS ZenWatch, Moto 360 (1st Gen), LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live, and even a Pebble. Basically, this would be a good test period for Android Wear in general, not necessarily the hardware, since I would not recommend most of these devices to potential buyers. When and if Lumoid begins to offer the next-gen Android Wear products, then it will become a very powerful service.

Below, check out the complete little breakdown of how it works, then check out their website if you are interested in test driving a few Android Wear products.

How it works:

  1. Pick out whichever 5 wearables you’d like to try – options for Android users include Pebble, ASUS ZenWatch, LG G Watch, Moto 360, Samsung Gear Live and more.

  2. Input your shipping address (can be your home, hotel, or pretty much anywhere in the U.S.) and place your order. The cost to try out 5 wearables for 2 weeks is $25.

  3. Lumoid ships you your items through UPS or FedEx and sends you tracking info.

  4. Once your items arrive, open the box and enjoy!

Periscope Brings Landscape Mode Support to Streamers

Periscope, the Twitter-developed app that allows users to livestream events to anyone on Twitter, has a fancy new mode for people to play with. Before this update, users were forced to stream in Portrait mode, but now, Landscape support is available.

In addition to a new orientation to tryout, users who stream privately can now cast to mutual parties. This means that instead of streaming to the whole world, you can stream to only those who follow you and that you follow back. This will allow for a more engaging stream.

If you ever want to get some free baseball cards, check me out.

What’s New

  • Landscape: When a broadcaster holds their phone in landscape, the video will now be oriented properly for all viewers. Viewers can continue holding their device in portrait, or match the broadcaster’s orientation to maintain full screen video. Either way, you’ll never need to watch sideways video again!
  • Broadcast to Mutuals: Now when you select a Private Broadcast, you are presented with your followers that you also follow back.
