Huawei P8 Gets Certified By TENAA, Rumors Say It Will Sport A Fingerprint Scanner

Huawei hasn’t exactly announced a lot of devices this year, at least not thus far. The company has showcased their first Android Wear-powered smartwatch at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona earlier this month, the Huawei Watch. This announcement came as a surprise, and Huawei did a great job building this watch. The company has also manufactured quite a few compelling devices last year, and we’re waiting for April 15th to see what’s next. Why April 15? Well, Huawei has already announced that they’ll hold an event on said date in London, and indirectly (via teasers) revealed that the Huawei P8 handset is going to land. We’ve been hearing a lot about this device through leaks and what not, and the handset was just certified by TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC).

According to TENAA’s listing, the Huawei P8 will be available in six versions, three of which are Chinese carrier models which support dual 4G LTE connectivity. The handset will feature a 5.2-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display with Gorilla Glass protection on top. The Huawei P8 will offer 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. Huawei’s very own HiSilicon Kirin 930 64-bit octa-core processor will power on this handset, and Android 5.0 Lollipop will come pre-installed here with Huawei’s Emotion UI on top of it.

Volume rocker, power button, microSD slot and SIM card slot are all located on the right side of the device it seems, which is somewhat interesting. If you take a look at the back of the device, you’ll notice a camera sensor which is not confirmed at the moment, but if leaked images are to believed we’re looking at a 13-megapixel snapper here. You’ll also noticed a dual-LED, dual tone flash next to the camera and Huawei branding below that. This device is made out of metal, mainly, though plastic is still a part of the picture it seems. The bezels are rather thin on this device, which makes it look quite sleek.

The TENAA listing isn’t the only P8-related news we want to share with you. Huawei’s invitations for this event have surfaced as well, which you can check out down below along with the Huawei P8 images. Also, according to a new leak, the Huawei P8 might feature a fingerprint scanner built-in to the power button on the right, though that’s just a rumor. The event is only 2 weeks away, let’s see if Huawei has a surprise up their sleeve.

Verizon updates the update to Lollipop for Samsung Galaxy S 5

Over the weekend Verizon started to roll out the update to Android Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S 5. This was welcome news to owners of the device who thought they were getting it back in February. However, after starting the process, Verizon pulled the update with no reason given, putting owners of the Galaxy S 5 back into waiting mode. Since resuming the update process, it appears Verizon has updated the update yet again based on changes to the build number.

The original update that started rolling out in February was G900VVRU1BNLC, which was replaced over this past weekend with G900VVRU1BOA4. A check of the most recent update announcement shows Verizon has now updated the build number to G900VVRU1BOC4. Given the minor change in the number, it seems likely that Verizon discovered some very small item that needed to be addressed once the update started hitting end users’ devices.

Along with the normal Lollipop updates, Verizon indicates the update includes bolder colors and more fluid animations as part of their TouchWiz interface and their specific apps now incorporate Material Design guidelines. Verizon also included specific updates to the Interruptions feature to help users get around some of the sound issues present in the initial release of Lollipop.

Xaiomi teasing product announcements for fifth anniversary celebration

On March 31st, Xiaomi will be celebrating their fifth anniversary. To celebrate, the company appears to be ramping up plans to expand beyond the smartphone and tablet product lines they were initially founded on as well as release some updated products in the traditional lines. For example, rumors already exist suggesting Xiaomi is going to release the Mi Pad 2 tablet device. Over the last few days, the company has been releasing some teaser images related to other products they apparently plan to announce at the big celebration.

One of the new products appears to be related to women’s fashion. The teaser image shows a woman’s dress and has a pink background. The letters hinting at the new product are “NSSJ” although it is unclear what that refers to. However, the president of Somans Fashion Group stated “this was the first such collaboration between the two companies.” That was in response to a Weibo post by Xiaomi’s co-founder Lin Bin who said the company wants to be more fashionable.

Another teaser image that was released shows an outline of something with the number 5 in the middle. The background of this image leans to a shade of red, which could possibly hint at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 device. A third image that was released comes with a magnifying glass image on top of a play button icon with the letters DDS and a background that is a gradient of orange and yellow. Again, the image is rather cryptic, though some think it may allude to a new 55-inch television that Xiaomi has plans to release.

Today, a fourth teaser image was released, this time with a green background. The image shown appears to be an arrow stuck in a bullseye target and the teaser is adorned with the letters TZC. The rings of the bullseye are marked with 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 as you work your way out. Some sources think this could refer to a connected scale and reflects Xiaomi’s interest in the Internet of Things.

Overall, the teaser images seem to be quite vague, but it is possible some of the impact is getting lost in the cultural translation since they are probably meant for an Asian audience that might pick up on some more subtle suggesstions related to the images. We will be watching tomorrow to see what Xiaomi announces to celebrate five years in existence and hopefully all will be revealed about what these teasers mean.

T-Mobile’s next-gen coverage maps pull data from real-time customer usage

T-Mobile’s strange-looking coverage maps used to be the inside joke of the wireless industry, but the company has made significant strides to improve their network in the past couple of years. With LTE, much-improved coverage, a forward-looking approach to network design and overall better network stability they’ve set themselves up for a nice future, and now they’re looking to flaunt it with their “next generation” coverage map.

The map uses crowd-sourced real-time data points to give users a clear — and, more importantly, accurate — idea of how strong T-Mobile’s network is in their area. They also use public speed test results to show you an average of the types of data speed users experience in any given area. Here’s the full breakdown of what their new coverage map brings:

• Customer-verified coverage based on actual customer usage, resulting in a vastly more transparent and accurate map, showing, for example, exactly where you can expect 4G LTE, 4G, 3G or other levels of coverage.


• A Verified Coverage icon indicating where the majority of data is provided by T-Mobile customers reporting their actual network experience, providing an added layer of confidence.


• Data that’s updated twice monthly − compared to data presented on the carriers’ maps, which is already dated by the time it’s printed and published and may be months or even years old.


• Speed test data from trusted third party apps showing average download speeds from customer speed tests over the last 90 days.

It’s nothing other apps haven’t been trying to do for years to help customers make informed decisions about finding the right carrier for them. Carrier Coverage is one app that looks to fill that need. But this is the first time a carrier has taken it upon themselves to create a coverage map based on crowd-sourced data and provide more than just pretty colors on a meaningless map. HTC Launch Theme Website Offering The Ability To Get To Grips With The New HTC One M9 Theme Feature

HTC’s latest flagship offering, the HTC One M9 might not have blown people away on looks alone, due to its remarkably similar appearance to its predecessor, the HTC One M8. However, that is not exactly where HTC is positioning this device. The device does resemble the One M8 in many ways, but does so, in a more refined and detailed manner. Where HTC are looking to impress their customers (and hopefully a few of their not yet customers) this time, is in the way of features. At least, this definitely seems to be the case if you take into consideration the copious number of feature-laden promotional videos the company has been outputting of late to advertise and promote the device.

One of those features, in particular, is their new Theme feature. This has long been reported to be expected on the One M9 and since it’s unveiling, demos and promo videos have also focused on the Theming elements of the device. Including some interesting possibilities. Like the ability to snap an image and you use the color in the image to create a theme for your overall system.

Well, it seems in preparation of the recent reports suggesting One M9’s are due to begin shipping to pre-order customers today, HTC have made available a dedicated Theme website. This site allows users to effectively create themes, even without having the phone. It is presumed the site will offer both the ability for potential customers to see the type and level of customization that is available for the One M9, while also providing an additional measure for One M9 owners to create a more in-depth theme for their device, remotely from their desktop. The site does also suggest a corresponding app is on the way as there is a “Get it on Google Play’ link. SK Telecom suspension could potentially hurt Galaxy S6 sales

Korea’s Communication Commission is planning on suspending SK Telecom’s ability to sign up new customers for a seven day period, and it looks like that sanction might hit right on the launch date (April 10th) of Samsung’s Galaxy S6. With SK Telecom accounting for 50% of wireless market share in South Korea, that’s a tough blow to take for Samsung.

SK Telecom was found to have to been offering illegal subsidies for customers, so the KCC will issue this suspension and a hefty fine to deter the company from doing anything similar again. They’ll announce when the suspension will be later on March 30th, so we’ll find out whether or not Samsung’s newest flagship will get caught in the crossfire.
