Google has an odd definition of "soon." For example, five of the countries that just received access to Google Play gift cards were first told that they were coming "soon" almost five months ago, and the last one has been waiting a further six weeks. Oh well, I suppose it's best not to look a gift card in the mouth. Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden have been added to Google's gift card system, and merchants should have gift cards in stock well before Christmas.

In a series of announcements via Google+, the Google Drive development team has announced several enhancements to the service to make it easier to use and more powerful whether being tapped on the desktop or from a mobile device.
Following some updates that were released last week on iOS, the trio of Android apps that make up the primary Drive apps – Docs, Sheets, and Slides – all received a batch of improvements. For Docs, users will find they have new line spacing options, including fractional spacing. Sheets users get scrollbars for faster navigation, and Slides users have new tools to insert, move, resize and rotate text boxes, shapes and lines. The Android apps will also handle Office files better, including creation, and some bugs were squashed with the update.
On the desktop, Drive now offers support for the three major ODF file formats – .odt for word processing files, .ods for spreadsheet files, and .odp for presentation files. For Office file formats, besides the improvements in how they are handled in the mobile app, Drive added some improvements on the desktop. These include support for more complex SmartArt and a change announced last week to support merged cells in Word tables and slide numbers in PowerPoint files.
Finally, Drive has improved their integration with mobile operating platforms. On Android devices, users can now use the Google search function to find files without opening the app. For example, a user can say “OK, Google – search for holiday letter on Drive.” For iOS users, Google has improved the ability of users to save documents to Drive from other iOS apps. For both platforms, the team also announced the availability of My Maps through Drive.

Earlier today T-Mobile launched Data Stash at their Un-Carrier 8 event and briefly touched on some of the improvements they have made to their data network during the past year. As a follow-up to that presentation, T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray took to the company’s official blog to share some additional details about how the carrier grew during 2014 and what to look forward to in 2015.
Neville notes that is was only a year ago that T-Mobile was trailing Verizon and AT&T in LTE network speed. The companies engineers were challenged to change that and to expand T-Mobile’s coverage during 2014. The target for T-Mobile was coverage that blanketed 250 million people in the U.S. and with a reach of 260 million today, the goal was achieved.
In addition to the newly extended reach of the LTE network, T-Mobile has optimized the network so it routinely tests faster than competitors. The carrier also began working on their Wideband LTE technology to speed things up even beyond traditional 4G LTE speeds. That service now covers 121 metro areas, including the recently lit up New York metro area. T-Mobile also made use of 700 MHz spectrum acquired last spring to launch low-band LTE in Cleveland, Colorado Springs, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.
Ray says that during 2015, T-Mobile’s LTE coverage should reach 280 million people by mid-year and 300 million by the end of the year. The company is also working with device manufacturers to ensure all new devices added to the portfolio during 2015 are Band-12 capable so they can tap into the expanding low-band LTE coverage.
In addition to improvements to the network coverage and speed, T-Mobile also introduced some new features to help customers. The company’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service, Wi-Fi calling and in-flight texting were launched during 2014.
Ray notes that T-Mobile customers use an average of 3.5 GB of data per month, far surpassing other carriers. He says this is a sign of strength for the carrier as customers make use of the services available to them.
Anyone out there thinking about making the switch to T-Mobile during 2015?

Technology and software should be all about innovation, and in most cases it is. Except for those times when some of the biggest tech companies who make products we use in our every day lives are stuck in courts battling it out over patents. This does nothing to help innovation, all it does it waste time and resources that could be used for doing better things to actually innovate. Google seems to firmly believe this, and apparently so does Verizon Wireless, as they have both just announced that they will be entering into a patent licensing agreement to share ideas and promote innovation.
The idea of the patent licensing agreement is to lower the risk of frivolous patent litigation according to Verizon, which seems like just as good of a reason as any to enter into a patent licensing agreement with one of the biggest tech companies on the planet. The Patent system is supposed to be used “promote the progress of science and useful arts,” but often and in the last 5 years, the industry has been laden with all kinds of patent lawsuits involving many of today’s top tech companies. For some the reasoning lies with the intention of protecting their investments and hard work, while others seem to simply just want to make as much money as they can from a patent court case. As we’ve stated before in other articles regarding some of those patent lawsuits, the only real winners at the end of such cases are the lawyers.
While announcing the deal and the reasons behind it, Verizon stated that they have “long championed patent reforms and industry actions that promote innovation. We’re pleased that today’s licensing deal with Google will help reduce the supply of patents that so-called patent trolls can assert against us.” Verizon and Google have both been silent on exactly what the terms of the patent licensing agreement is, but in the end does it really matter since the intention is to help stop ridiculous patent litigation? What do you think about Verizon and Google’s Patent license agreement? Is this something that should have happened sooner and do you think more companies will follow Google and Verizon’s lead?

Barely a day after it debuted in the Google Play Store for New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, you can now officially download Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft here in the US. It’s only available for Android tablets at the moment, but don’t worry. Blizzard says they’re working on a smartphone version that will arrive sometime next year. Have at it.
If you own an Android Wear device right now, chances are you're probably waiting patiently furiously checking for that elusive Android Wear update. Well, we've got you covered. As the links to the OTA ZIP files become available, we will post them here. To flash these, you'll need to have ADB installed and have the Google USB drivers from the Android SDK. You'll reboot your watch into recovery mode, then select "Install Update From ADB." You can then run "adb sideload filename.zip" from a command prompt.

Google is all about improving things. When we see many of the updates that go out to our favorite Google apps chances are there are some darn good improvements hidden within, whether that be in the form of new features and changes, or just simple bug fixes and improvements. Google is also a company that isn’t afraid to remove things, from anywhere, and that includes removing features from applications or functions on Android as well as shutting down services that weren’t really pulling their weight. This time we’re speaking specifically of a feature they have recently taken out of an existing function on Android devices, xome voice packs within the text-to-speech function.
With many who have used the text-to-speech functionality over the years, a major pain point(ok maybe not a major pain point but it has been a pain point for some)has been the atrocious voice quality given to the system. It has gotten better over the years and at one point Google even added in the ability to download a high quality voice pack that made things sound more “human-like” when you would use text-to-speech. After the update that was pushed out to the text-to-speech function a few days back, Google actually took out the option to download the high quality voice pack for use with the TTS.
It sounds odd as to why they wouldn’t let you download something that presumably sounds better than the original voice tech used for the feature, and it certainly would be odd if the high quality voice pack still sounded better. According to Google though, the regular voice pack has been improved to the point where it sounds even better than the high quality pack, and there is no longer a need for the additional download since the standard voices are much improved over the high quality voices. When you also factor in that the standard voices were a tiny fraction of the file size, you should begin to understand why Google has made it so that you only have a need for the standard voice inclusion going forward. This is one case where a feature removal should be looked at as a good thing.

When it comes AOSP development for their handsets, Sony has been much better about the whole thing lately. Although what we really want for our Sony devices is the official OTA update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, a nice consolation prize is that Sony has been adding in AOSP support this year for the lineup of Qualcomm based devices from their 2014 lineup. They have added in support for a couple more handsets today, which brings Sony’s AOSP support to the entirety of the Qualcomm CPU based lineup of Xperia device that have been released this year. AOSP support may not matter to some, but it’s big news for developers and ROM creators, as well as those users who own an Xperia device and are looking forward to some ROM support for them.
In today’s additions, Sony has brought AOSP support to the Xperia E3 and the Xperia T3 devices, and they have also updated the source code for the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia M2 devices to make the code more stable. This only adds to Sony’s commitment to open development on their handsets, and hopefully for those users of the devices listed here and the others included in the same group, developers will be quick to get to work and start creating some amazing custom ROM’s. Things like that of course take time especially if we expect those creations to be quality made and deliver an awesome experience. So even though Sony has added AOSP support for those devices as of today, it could still be a while before we see any ROM’s hit for phones like the Xperia E3 and Xperia T3, and that’s OK.
On another note, Sony had earlier this fall shown that they were beta testing Android 5.0 Lollipop on a couple of devices including the Sony Xperia Z3, and the Xperia Z3 Compact, so with any luck it won’t be too long after the first of the year before we start to see some software updates head our way for those two phones. Do you currently use a Sony Xperia phone like the Xperia E3 or Xperia T3? If so are you looking forward to developing off the newly added AOSP support or are you a user who is waiting on a custom ROM? Share your thoughts.

Christmas is definitely here. If you were unsure then you only need to head down to the shops and see all the Christmas decorations, promotions and razzmatazz everywhere. Alternatively, you could just flip on the TV and see the numerous Christmas shows and adverts being played continuously. If you are in the UK, then by now all the talk is about the latest John Lewis advert. Well, it seems John Lewis are not the only ones focus on banging out the Christmas adverts this year. In a similar fashion, Samsung also has their own adverts on the go and ready for your holiday cheer.
Now you may be thinking “didn’t I see them this morning?’ as we did report on Samsung releasing a number of new videos for the holidays to promote the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. However, the latest video to come from Samsung is not quite a product based advert, but instead is far more similar to the John Lewis advert. This new one is certainly full of Christmas cheer and is more of a celebratory video then a selling video.
The new video is an animated story which tells the tale of a young girl’s Christmas dream. Strangely the video (and her dream) brings together over seventy Samsung devices including the Samsung Galaxy Tab S, the newly released Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the Samsung Gear S smartwatch and even the Samsung Curved UHD TV. According to Samsung, it took a team of ten animators to bring the video together. Although even more interestingly, the initial character sketches were created using the S-Pen and the Note 4 (excellent product placing Samsung). Not to mention that there was a further crew of over thirty people on hand for the final shoot which took more than seventeen hours of filming, which in the end was all condensed down into the two minutes and twenty-three second video. Well, if you want to give the video a watch (and I suggest you do) then hit play below and see for yourself, Samsung’s take on Christmas. Don’t forget afterwards to make sure to leave a comment on what you thought of the video and how many devices you managed to spot.

While Android Wear devices may not have been the first smartwatches, no one can argue that they did bring some great additions to the market with the way they handle notifications. Now, Pebble smartwatch users can get that same set of notification actions(plus more according to the Pebble team)on their Pebble smartwatches thanks to the latest update to the Pebble app, which brings it forward to version 2.3. Now after this update, you’ll be able to reply and act on notifications right from your Pebble on your wrist, just like with Android wear, and there are also some features you’ll be able to utilize that Android Wear currently doesn’t have.
Two of the focused new interactions that can be handled via your Pebble smartwatch are replying to hangouts messages with emojis, as well as “making it rain!” according to the devs, or otherwise known as sending some money to friends who have sent you a request via Square Cash. When it comes to the Android Wear Pebble compatibility, the basic idea is that if it’s something you can do with an Android Wear device, it will be capable of being completed via your Pebble too after the update to 2.3. A great thing for the developer side of things, is that making these sorts of interactions possible through Pebble requires no extra work. So if you want Android Wear action handling of notifications to work on Pebble devices, you don’t have to do a thing since this is handled by the Pebble app itself, taking the already baked in Android Wear action integration of apps and using that for the same functions within Pebble smartwatches.
If you’re a Pebble user and you want to test drive these features, you have to be a beta tester to do so. The good news is that the team at Pebble has opened up access to the beta and you can join by hitting this link, which takes you to the beta testing group (Google groups) page. Pebble mentions that while their team was able to make this happen for Pebblers, it’s all thanks to the “open approach Google built into Android’s notification system.” In addition to adding Android Wear notification handling to Pebble smartwatches, the latest update to the Pebble app also now allows Android users on Android 4.0+ compatibility with the Pebble platform, instead of the previous requirement of Android 4.3+. Do you use a Pebble? If so, are you excited about these new changes?

Instagram has long been one of the most popular ways for sharing photos and when that world came to Android users it was a nice little gift for all the photo loving people out there. You can use Instagram for more than just sharing and favoriting photos though, you can also use it to apply some cool looking frames and filters to the images you snap from your smartphone camera, and you can even use it to take pictures right from inside the app with the button that takes you to the camera viewfinder.
To add to the allure of throwing some filters onto your most beloved pics, Instagram today has announced via their blog that they’re adding in five new filters for users to play with. They open up by reminiscing on their new filter adds from back in December of 2012, two years prior to now, having added in the filters Mayfair and Willow back then. While those are arguably two of the best, they focus on the fact that photography trends have changed and this has led to them adding in some photo filters to go along with trends of today’s photography. They believe these filters are their best ones yet, and if you use Instagram yourself you just might think the same thing once you get to know them.
The new filters being added in this latest update are Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Aden, and Perpetua, (all of which you can see previews of in the gallery below according to the same order they were listed off) and all five filters will be sitting at the front of your filter tray the next time you open up the app after the update. In addition to the new filters, Instagram is also adding in the ability to see a blurred preview of your filtered image at a glance so you know what to expect after applying the filter effect. Lastly, they have added in a new way to manage your favorite filters so you can keep the ones you view as the very best, at the forefront of the filter tray by re-organizing them in the order that you wish to see them, while also allowing you to hide the ones you either don’t care for or won’t use that often. The update should be live on the Play Store now so if you already have Instagram installed, check out the my apps section of the Play Store and see if the update is ready to go. If you don’t have Instagram yet, you can grab it from the Play Store as of now.
