For those of you that own both a Samsung smartphone like the Galaxy S5, or soon to be Galaxy Note 4 as well as a Gear smartwatch, you’re going to like this new product from Samsung. What they announced today, is a new cable that you can use to connect your Galaxy S5 to your Gear Smartwatch and transfer power between them to keep them both alive during the day. Now this might not seem all that amazing, especially where I’d rather have a battery pack and tether one of them, then tether both together. But that’s just me. But this is something new that we haven’t seen anyone else do in the past.
Samsung shows us how to get started, well tells us anyways:
“To start, download the “Power Sharing” app from Samsung Apps or the Google Play store, and select the amount of power to transfer. Then, simply plug in one end of the cable into the device that the power is being drawn from while plugging in the other end of the cable into the device to be charged.”
Their power sharing app is in the Play Store and obviously the Samsung app store as well. Then just plug the cable in to both devices. Sounds pretty simple and easy, right? We’ll have to give this a try once we get one to use, likely with the Galaxy Note 4. It’s available now from Samsung’s website if you’re interested in picking one up to charge your Samsung devices now. You can grab one here.
It’s definitely an interesting concept. I’m not so sure it’ll catch on, but definitely interesting. What will be more interesting is how well it works. As you’re basically transferring power from one device to another. How many of you are interested in this Micro USB Power-Sharing cable from Samsung?

It seems as if lately, Samsung has started to lose some momentum. Now while they have seen some decreases in their stock and also their profits, they are still making a ton of money. But we also saw this same thing when HTC was on top of the mobile world a few years ago, and they weren’t able to make a turn around and it got worse and worse. So hopefully Samsung has learned from their competitors mistakes and can make a decent turn around before it’s a really big drop in profit.
Samsung lost about 2.3% on the market, dropping them to about 1.1 billion won. Really doesn’t seem like a lot, but remember that they also got about $30 billion wiped away from their market value. Which is a big deal. Samsung also lowered their profit forecast from 5.7 trillion won to just 4.7 trillion won. Samsung Securities Co., noted in a report this week that “its smartphones have lost appeal — as evidenced by the solid performances of high-end Chinese models and unexpectedly strong iPhone 6 pre-orders.” I’m not so sure that their smartphones have lost their appeal, but that people are starting to see that there are other choices out there and that Samsung’s stuff hasn’t changed a whole lot in the last few years.
However, Samsung Securities Co., is correct. Chinese manufacturers are definitely making a dent in Samsung and other OEM’s marketshare. We’ve seen Xiaomi, ZTE, Huawei, Meizu and other Chinese OEMs getting bigger and bigger over the last year or so. And that has to eat into someone’s market share, and since Samsung has the most, it would be theirs.
Samsung has the Galaxy Alpha coming to the US this week, and the Galaxy Note 4 coming next month. So we could see some big numbers from Samsung in the next month or so. But I don’t think we’ll see Samsung sell 10 million Galaxy Note 4’s in a weekend, like Apple did with the iPhone 6. That type of success is unmatched right now.

For those of you out there that use Plex for streaming your own content on other devices, like Chromecast. You’ll probably want to read this. Plex has stated today that they will be increasing the cost of the Plex Pass. This goes for the monthly, annual and lifetime passes. Here’s how it’s going to look: Monthly Plex Pass subscriptions will increase from $3.99 to $4.99 per month. Annual Plex Pass subscriptions will increase from $29.99 to $39.99 per year. Lifetime Plex Passes will increase from $74.99 to $149.99.
Additionally, Plex stated this in their blog post this morning: “Again, please note that these new rates will only affect new subscriptions moving forward. Of course, as we’ve mentioned in the past, we may need to charge separately for certain types of premium content, and we may need to adjust Plex Pass prices again in the future.”
So at least it’ll only affect new Plex subscriptions and not current users who may have already paid for their lifetime Plex Pass. It’s understandable to raise prices, so let’s see what other kind of features and services Plex adds into their app and service in the very near future as that would be a good reason to go up on prices, at least in my opinion.
Starting September 29th, these new rates go into affect. So that if you are thinking about upgrading to the Lifetime Plex Pass, now is the time to do so, as you’ll save about $75 on that. Which is a pretty big deal, I think. Plex has always been around and has done some great things. It’s also one of our favorite Chromecast apps out there. So if you use Plex why not support the company. How many of you are thinking about upgrading to their Lifetime Plex Pass before the price jumps? Let us know in the comments below.
