Antitrust lawsuit against Google gets dismissed

Google_logo_474844 Recently, two smartphone customers filed a class action lawsuit against Google claiming that they were artificially driving up the price of smartphones by forcing Android OEMs to use Google apps as the default on their devices. This made it harder for a company to rely on Bing or Yahoo! Mail instead of Google and Gmail. Kind of a tough argument to prove, but the suit was filed anyway.

Unfortunately for the two customers that filed the suit, they were unable to prove any correlation between bundled Google apps and higher smartphone prices. If anything, Android (and Google, indirectly) has helped push smartphone prices lower than ever. Just look at devices like the extremely affordable Moto X, or Google’s newly launched Android One phones. These phones are significantly more powerful and more affordable than they’ve ever been.

Google still has antitrust legal issues in Europe, but at least in the US, the company’s out of the fire. For now, anyway.

Android Headliner: What Will Google Call the Next Nexus?

Nexus-6-SLickwraps-AH-03288

The Nexus is always one of the most anticipated launches of the year. In some aspects, even more anticipated than the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note unveilings. Although, I think a big reason for that is that we get a new version of Android with the Nexus each year. We’ve had quite a few Nexus’ devices over the years. It started with the HTC Nexus One in early 2010, followed by the Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. Next up was LG with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, and the last Nexus smartphone was Motorola who made the Nexus 6. We’ve also seen some Nexus tablets including the Nexus 10 from Samsung, Nexus 9 from HTC and Nexus 7 from ASUS.

Naturally, we’d think the next Nexus smartphone would be the Nexus 7, right? But wait, we’ve already had a Nexus 7, actually we’ve had two of them. So what could Google possibly name the next Nexus? Well they could go the route of most other OEMs and do Nexus 7 (2015). But boy that’d be confusing. Even though Google has stopped doing the Nexus 7 tablets, and moved to a 9-inch tablet in the Nexus 9 from HTC. Perhaps the Nexus 6 (2015)? A little less confusing since the name wasn’t shared by two tablets. Google might even start with an entirely new brand. Either way, Google has to do something this year with the Nexus line, as far as naming goes.

While we’re talking about the name right now, I don’t think many are going to care about the name of the device. But care more about the device itself. Currently, Huawei is rumored to be manufacturing the device. Which brings up a whole lot of red flags, especially for people in the US. After all, Huawei is funded by the Chinese government. And China isn’t exactly friends with the US. But let’s not get into that right now.

Since it is Huawei, at least according to the rumor mill, that’s creating the next Nexus. Maybe it’ll be the Nexus Ascend? That could be a way for Google to work in their partners brand along with the Nexus. Nexus Ascend, Nexus One M10, Nexus G4, etc. Although it’d get a bit messy and hard to decipher the different generations.

We shouldn’t see the next Nexus until later this fall. Which is when Google normally unveils the new version of Android and new Nexus devices. However, rumors and reports have been showing us that we may see one earlier than that, which would be a 64-bit device. The Nexus 6 is not a 64-bit smartphone, as it is running the Snapdragon 805. So you have a 64-bit OS being showcased on a 32-bit device.

HTC Working on it’s own Version of Android Auto, Dubbed HTC Cello

HTC-Logo-AH2

We have a bit of interesting info here, from reddit user Mr_Bartek. It appears that HTC is not content with Android Auto and has decided to create their own vision of what Android Auto should be. The device is known as the HTC Cello. According to this reddit post, it appears that the HTC Cello will do a whole lot more than what Android Auto currently does.

“…HTC is planning to integrate more with the car than Android Auto does as the device uses CAN bus and RS485 for communication with the vehicle and bluetooth, MHL for communication with an Android device. As of right now the device is tested with the following equipment: Night Vision, Sonar, Mini HMI (Human Machine Interface), DVD, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, Navigation and GPS. Device currently runs on KitKat with Sense version specifically made for cars called Sense Automotive (may be an internal name).”

Pretty interesting product here from HTC, but not too surprising. We’ve heard that HTC is experimenting with other product categories, with the RE Camera, and VIVE being some of those new product categories. And it looks like now they are getting into the car scene. However this will likely mean that the other Android OEMs are looking to get into their own Android Auto-like product. Which in turn means that we could see a whole bunch of variants for those with Android phones. This could be a good thing as it’ll allow for more competition, but it will also confuse a lot of people. Hopefully, HTC will allow Cello to work with all Android devices and not just HTC smartphones and tablets.

The HTC Cello is running KitKat and has been in development since Q4 2014. Hopefully it’ll be running Android 5.0 Lollipop by the time it’s announced. The reddit user does say that he doesn’t have a whole lot of info on the device. And it sounds like it’s still a ways off from being an official product from HTC. We’ll be keeping an eye on HTC Cello to see what the Taiwanese manufacturer does with the device or product.

Is HTC working on its own variation of Android Auto?

htc_cello_release_note_040415

New markets are always being analyzed by comapanies because of their ability to expand profits. Home automation, wearables, and virtual reality are all being flooded with new products. The automobile market, though, has been slowly seeing the arrival of new platforms and complementing hardware. Current options include Google’s Android Auto, Apple’s CarPlay, and MirrorLink. Later this year, HTC could be involved with its own variation of Android Auto. On Reddit, one poster shared the front page release note for a device going by the codename “Cello.”

The release note shows that special components are being used. Night Vision, Sonar, Mini HMI (Human Machine Interface), DVD, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Lane Departure Warning System, Navigation and GPS are all named. Some of these are not available through Android Auto at this time.

Interestingly, HTC has apparently worked with Android 4.4 KitKat to operate Cello. That could change by the time it is introduced to the world.

Koushik Dutta Teases A Material Redesign Of AllCast's UI

unnamed (1) AllCast, from well-known Android developer Koushik "Koush" Dutta, is one of the more popular alternative streaming apps on Android. The current release is version 1.1.8.6, and it looks pretty good - it certainly conforms to Android's design standards more than most video apps. But that doesn't mean it can't be improved. Early this morning Koush showed off a GIF of a redesigned AllCast, complete with Material Design visual elements and tasty Lollipop animations.

Featured: Top 10 MLB Apps for Android

Top-10-Best-MLB-Apps-AH-1

The 2015 Major League Baseball season is about to get underway in the next week or so. Which means it’s time to go over the apps that everyone should have installed from now until September and through October if your team is good enough, if you want to keep up with all things Baseball. These are our top 10 apps for Baseball fans.

MLB.com At Bat

Screenshot 2015-03-31 11.58.57

This is probably the most comprehensive app for those keeping up with their favorite MLB teams. I’ve been using this one for a few years to keep up with the Detroit Tigers and it is amazing. It has just about everything you would ever want to know. From stats, to standings, to scores, to highlights and everything in between.

MLB Perfect Inning

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.01.14

This is one of the many baseball games that’s out there for the 2015 Season. It’s developed by Gamevil, and allows you to create your own team. Including the ability to play as any of the American League of National League teams and take your team straight to the October Classic.

9 Innings: 2014 Pro Baseball

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.06.30

Here’s another game for MLB fans, this one is actually from last year, but should be updated soon. It’s from Com2US, who makes some pretty sweet games as well. You can play as any of the 1400 Baseball players in the MLB as well as any team in the MLB. Yes that includes all 30 of them.

MLB Ballpark Empire

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.08.17

This is a bit of a slower paced game, and actually one I picked up last year. You can play as any team in the MLB, but you’re basically the GM of the team, not a player. What that entails is building the park, trading players and coaching staff. You have complete control with this one.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

theScore: Sports & Scores

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.11.56

theScore is another one of my favorite apps. It’s not just for baseball either, as they now cover just about every sport out there, including eSports. theScore will give you scores, standings, news, highlights and much more for every single Baseball game this year, as well as Basketball, Football, Soccer and many other sports.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

FOX Sports GO

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.13.54

Fox Sports Go is going to be a popular one this year, as you’ll be able to stream games on your smartphone and tablet. However, you will need to login through your cable provider unfortunately. A lot of games, not just baseball, are streamed and shown on Fox Sports channels, so this is a must have app.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

WatchESPN

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.16.33

This is another app that’s going to be pretty popular this year. With Sunday Night Baseball and all. With the WatchESPN app you can watch all of ESPN’s content right there on your smartphone and tablet. You’ll just need to login through your cable provider to do so. Additionally, if you use Sling TV, you can login via Sling and get access to WatchESPN.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Team Stream by Bleacher Report

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.19.24

So you want your baseball news, but you only care about say your team? Well Team Stream from Bleacher Report will filter out all the news so you only get news for the teams that you select. So you are choosing your experience and not the editors at Bleacher Report.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

ESPN Fantasy Baseball

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.21.27

Want to play a little Fantasy Baseball? ESPN has your back. If you are playing ESPN Fantasy Baseball this year, you can use the ESPN app to keep up with your league, as well as trade players all from the app.

Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

CBS Sports

Screenshot 2015-03-31 12.24.54

Another nicely designed sports app here. This time from CBS Sports. Again, CBS Sports covers a ton of sports, not just Baseball. But they do bring you the latest news, scores, stats, highlights and so much more. All in a tablet optimized app. What more could you ask for?
