Nexus 5X Hits FCC With All US Carrier Bands, Including Verizon

The LG Nexus 5X stopped off at the FCC today, which is a good sign since Google is preparing to unveil the phone publicly next Tuesday. We know that it’s the Nexus 5X because the model numbers mentioned throughout (LG-H790 and LG-H791) match up to the Amazon listing we saw earlier in the week. The phones also show support for all sorts of wireless bands, even Verizon, just like Nexus phones have for the past couple of years.

We should point out that the LG-H790 has got to be the North America model, while the LG-H791 must be the international unit. I say that because the LG-H790 is ready for action on all of the major US carriers, like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The LG-H791 doesn’t have support on all of those because it’s completely missing CDMA compatibility and instead looks like a global GSM phone.

On that note, the LG-H790, which is the model we care about, shows support for CDMA bands BC0, BC1, BC10, which gives it the Sprint and Verizon support. It also supports GSM 850 and 1900, along with WCDMA band 2, 4, and 5, which lets it play around on T-Mobile and AT&T. As for LTE bands, well, it has all of them. According to these FCC docs, it has LTE band 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 29, and 41. If all of those numbers are confusing you, be sure to check out our US carrier band cheat sheet.

For the Verizon heads in the building, that band 13 LTE is all you should care about. Well, that and some of band 4.

The listings also show 5GHz and 2.4GHz 802.11ac WiFi, non-removable battery, and dimensions of 146.9×72.5mm, with a diagonal display of 133mm. Turn 133mm into inches and you are looking at roughly 5.2-inches, which is the size of the LG Nexus 5X’s display. The listing for the LG-H791 references wireless chargers being tested, so don’t be surprised if this phone supports wireless charging. Wireless charging has become a standard for Google phones over the last years.

And that’s about it so far. We checked for the Huawei Nexus 6P, but it doesn’t seem to have arrived just yet.

Verizon, folks, Verizon.

This past week, we posted up our Moto X Pure Edition review, unboxed and fondled the Moto 360 (2nd Gen), talked about the Galaxy S7 possibilities, and hosted Episode 94 of the Droid Life Show.

Look below if you missed any of the big stuff.

Google event next week! Get pumped!

Blackberry CEO John Chen Goes Hands-on With the Priv, a Phone He May Not Even Know How to Use

Blackberry Priv, like give. That’s the proper way of saying “Priv.” We now know, which is good because even after a 5-minute conversation on the matter during today’s DL Show, we were 100% wrong. Dammit. We thought Priv as in leave or sleeve. Silly Android people from the US, you know nothing.

Anyways, I bring it up because Blackberry CEO John Chen did a little hands-on song and dance with the phone today through Canadian news outlet, BNN. It’s awkward, to say the least, but also quite comical and incredibly awesome, because I don’t think he even knows how to use it.

First, he fumbles over the meaning of the name when asked, which is part privacy and privilege, apparently. After that, the conversation moves into specs, like the fact that “it runs Google” (not Android, mind you), a 5.5-inch curved display, the “latest Qualcomm specs and the cameras and all that good stuff.” Yes, all that good stuff.

But somewhere in between there, Chen attempts to show the BNN correspondent how the phone works, but ummm, I don’t know that he quite understands his new flagship phone. As you watch, you can almost imagine his mind saying, “Wtf…home button…do something dammit…why are you not…Oh…Chrome! Let’s do Chrome! Wait, shit, it isn’t set up. Think of excuse, like it’s a demo unit! SWIPE UP LIKE IN BB10 to change tasks…wait this is Google…err Android. SHIT. Ummm….the specs and stuff, all the latest, yeah, say that! Qualcomm and cameras, yeah. What? She wants the keyboard now? That’s our BOO-YAH MOMENT…stall…curves! Apps! OK, she doesn’t care. KEYBOARD TIME. BOOM. And yep, she’s impressed.”

Man. Canada. I do love you.

Friday Poll: Vertical or Horizontal App Drawer?

Today’s poll is as simple as it gets because there is clear controversial divide about the way an app drawer should scroll in 2015. Google forced the vertical scroller on many of you this morning in an update to the Google app, so it’s time to decide once and for all which way you all actually prefer.

Are you Team Vertical or Team Horizontal? Why?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Tip: Use NFC to Transfer Hangouts Calls From One Device to Another

Here’s a quick tip for all of you Hangouts users, one which could save you if your smartphone or tablet is about to shut down due to lack of power.

When in an ongoing call on one device, if your smartphone features NFC (sorry, OnePlus 2 owners), you can use Android Beam to seamlessly transfer the call from one device to another in seconds.

To perform this action, simply place the back of two devices next to each other while one is in a call using the Hangouts Dialer app, and you will then see the above pictured prompt. Select “touch to beam,” and the call will be picked up instantly on the secondary device, whether it be a smartphone or tablet.

Please note, both devices will need to be logged into the same Google account, or the secondary device you are attempting to transfer the call to will read “account not found.”

What other neat tricks have you performed with NFC?

Yep, Your Google App Drawer Now Scrolls Vertically!

For those using the Google Now Launcher, it’s likely that you woke up this morning or saw late last night that a few major changes went down. What you are experiencing is part of the Google app update, which went live for a few users late last week. This morning, Google pushed the update out to all users.

The update, as you discovered, includes a vertical app drawer and quick search functionality inside the app drawer for the Google Now Launcher application.

We have received a few emails this morning, with some people not too happy about the new vertical scrolling. Unfortunately, there is no option to switch between the left-to-right UI and vertical, but of course, you can always use a 3rd-party launcher such as Nova or Action Launcher 3.

Fan of the new update or do you miss the swiping cards UI?

Blackberry Confirms That It’s Making a Flagship Android Phone Called “Priv”

This morning, during its Q2 earnings called, Blackberry announced/confirmed that it will launch a “flagship” phone powered by Android that is called the “Priv.” The Priv, as you probably already figured out, is the Venice slider that has leaked over and over and over and over again.

Blackberry said that this “flagship” Priv brings together “the best of Blackberry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform.” They are hoping that, during a time where your privacy seems to always be under threat, they can attract you to this device that will hopefully keep you snuggly warm and safe.

Here is the quote from their earnings call:

Today, BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap. First, the company will launch a flagship slider device, Priv, which will run on the Android operating system, bringing together the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform. In combination with BlackBerry’s efforts to support Android for Work on the BES12 platform, the new device will offer best in class security for enterprise customers. BlackBerry expects the device to be available late in the calendar year in major markets in-store and online, and will release further details in the coming weeks.

Funny thing is, they also took the time to create a webpage announcing the Priv, where they talked about privacy and security. It mentions the fact that someone leaked the name “Priv” before they could make it public and that they “found this breach of privacy extraordinary” yet think this phone is for you because it protects customers’ privacy. So, in other words, the company who can’t even keep its own products private and is baffled by the notion, says it can keep your information private.

Silly.

Who wants the Priv!

(Is it pronounced Preev like sleeve, or Prive like hive? I’m going Preev like sleeve.)
