This Icon Pack (Could Be) Hot: Marshmallow Icons [Beta]

What’s the next potentially hot focus for icon designers? It could be Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Assuming Google tweaks some things here or there as its Material Design ideas evolve, we could see a revamping of something like the stock icons that are used on Android. Maybe. So far there are no signs of that, but if that happens, then hey, we should see a flood of new Material-esque, Marshmellow-inspired icons to take over our phones.

In case that does actually happen, at least one icon designer is getting a head start on the concept. With Marshmallow icons, you get a “beta” product that so far, includes 150 icons. They’ll look familiar, but yet slightly tweaked from the norm. If anything, they are a semi-fresh take on the current Material Design set of icons that you already know.

Oh, it’s free too, and includes the new Marshmallow wallpapers.

Video: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ vs. Galaxy S6 Edge

So, yeah, we have a Galaxy S6 Edge+ in house. Interested in it? We are, sort of. Since it’s really just a bigger version of the already-released Galaxy S6 Edge, it’s tough to take this phone all that seriously. OK, that’s not fair, because this phone is equally as good as the smaller Galaxy S6 Edge, it’s just that you already know everything about this phone for the most part, outside of how the Edge experience translates over to a bigger body. Because in reality, that is what we are looking at here. Sure, some specs differ here and there, but what you have in front of you is a blown up Galaxy S6 Edge with a “+” next to its name.

But since we do have one here, we might as well spend some time with it and its gold body. Tim is well into getting some final thoughts together on the Galaxy Note 5, so until then, we’ll take up some of your time with this other big guy.

The first little thing we wanted to do is compare the new Galaxy S6 Edge+ to the original S6 Edge. In the video below, we talk spec differences, missing or tweaked features, how Samsung has improved the Edge software experience for the better, and how gorgeous that display is.

Here we go.

Deal: Refurbished LG G Watch R on Groupon for $180

For who knows how long on Groupon, you can pick up a refurbished G Watch R from LG, priced at just $179.99. These smartwatches still go for $280 on Newegg and other various online retailers, but are no longer available on the Google Store.

We played with the G Watch R when it first released, loving its fully circular display, good battery life, and of course, the Android Wear OS in general. It was the first Android Wear device to come with a display that was completely round, unlike the Moto 360 with its black bar at the bottom of the display.

The model sold on Groupon comes with a Black leather strap, as well as a charger.

Go grab one if you are interested.

Cortana for Android Public Beta Now Downloadable for All

Cortana, the Microsoft-made personal assistant, is now available for all to download on Google Play. Still sporting a beta tag, Cortana offers most of what Siri or Google Now provides you, with exception that she is powered by Bing, Microsoft’s search platform. When speaking to Cortana, you can ask her to set alarms, get calendar event reminders, and quite a bit more.

Thanks to a recent update, Cortana can also replace Google Now, but only technically. Yes, she will pop up instead of Google Now whenever you press the home key, but you cannot prompt her by saying, “Ok Cortana.” That feature has yet to come.

Cortana also pairs nicely with users of Windows computers, with the ability to easily sync certain information between the devices.

To get started, follow the Play Link below, become a tester, then get to downloading.

Buy a HTC One M9, Receive $100 in Google Play Credit

Available exclusively through HTC’s website, if you purchase a One M9, you will receive $100 worth of Google Play credit, usable however you see fit. HTC’s website states that this offer is running through the end of August, with the final date listed as August 31, 2015, but the fine print claims that the device needs to be purchased between “8/24/15 and 11/30/15.”

The One M9 is priced at $649 – that’s a no-contract, unlocked model. You can also buy the device through a carrier on HTC’s website, or pick up a carrier-branded model for the same $649 price.

For those thinking about picking up the One M9, do note that it will come with a full year of UH-OH Protection (free replacement if you break it), and the $100 of Google Play credit is pretty legit.

Think of all those IAPs you can make, or the $6 HD movie rentals you can watch.

Huawei Nexus Starts Making In-Hand Appearances – Codename “Angler,” 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 810, 64GB Storage

Thanks to a couple of posts on Google+, we may have our first look at the upcoming Huawei Nexus, codenamed “angler.” The device appeared in the hand of some sort of tester, with photos showing the phone’s front and backside, USB Type-C port, and boot screen that gives us a hint of the specs.

Assuming these pictures are legit, we have a confirmation on the phone carrying the codename “angler,” a name that first popped up back in May. The boot screen from the device also shows it with a Snapdragon 810 processor (MSM8994), 3GB RAM, and 64GB storage.

As for what the device looks like, well, it’s got some sort of Droid X-like camera hump at the top, along with a matte white or black finish. We can see a fingerprint sensor housed in the middle of its backside, front speakers on the front, and Nexus branding running vertically. It looks like the renders created a week ago. It’s all…ummm…interesting, to say the least.

Previous rumors suggested that this phone would have a 5.7-inch display.

Thoughts?

Moto X Play Will Probably Arrive in the US as the DROID MAXX 2 With a DROID Turbo 2 Alongside It

You know how we were all disappointed to learn that Motorola’s Moto X Play was skipping the US and instead stopping off at all of our surrounding countries? That’s because it’s more than likely showing up here as the DROID MAXX 2 with Verizon exclusivity. This news shouldn’t shock you, since Motorola made mention during their big event last month that US customers would get other options later in the year.

According to HelloMotoHK, along with a number of other news outlets who have since jumped on the news, the Moto X Play will be branded as the DROID MAXX 2 here in the US. It will also be joined by a follow-up to last year’s DROID flagship Turbo. That phone will be called the DROID Turbo 2. If you were looking for proof of the idea of a new DROID MAXX 2, look no further than the image included here. They show backs for the Moto X Play next to those from the MAXX 2, which as “DROID” and “Verizon” branding towards its lower backside.

As a recap, the original DROID MAXX was a 2013 flagship phone that was supposed to be the king of battery beasts. It seems a bit odd, though, that Motorola is now dropping the MAXX line into a secondary mid-range tier. I say that because the Moto X Play is most definitely not a flagship, and if this is the US version of that phone, well, it’s not a flagship either. The Turbo 2 will be the new DROID flagship, likely based off of the Moto X Pure Edition.
