This Time Yu’s Yureka Smartphone Sells 15,000 Units In A Reported 4 Seconds

Yu Yureka_43

It is no secret that certain OEMs enjoy the odd flash sale. As well as generating a load of media attention, they also get to shift significant amounts of stock in a very short time frame. Joining the ranks of the flash sale recently, was the sub-brand of Micromax, Yu. They along with the latest (and first) android device “Yureka” is the latest to get the flash sales treatment and seems to be rather good at it. A couple of weeks ago Yu embarked on their first flash sale with the Yureka and reportedly sold 10,000 units in about 3 seconds. Not bad for a new brand with a new device.

That said, shortly after the sale, reports began to emerge that the Yu sale might not have been as clear-cut as we all thought. Users were reporting that they could buy the device before the suggested start time, lending support to the theory that they could not have sold so many in only 3 seconds. Not to mention, users were also reporting that they had been overcharged when buying the device through Amazon India.

Well, following on from all of this, the latest sale for the newest Cyanogen OS powered device took place today and the latest figures are now starting to come in. During this latest sale, it is being reported that Yu managed to shift an increased 15,000 units and this time, in 4 seconds. So the sale lasted apparently a second longer than the previous one. Although, in that second they apparently managed to shift a further 5,000 units. After the last sale, some units might debate the authenticity of the latest figures. That said, either way it does seem there is a good level of demand for the Yureka smartphone. Which is not too surprising when you consider the specs on offer. Yureka costs Rs. 8,999 (roughly $145) and offers a 5.5-inch screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Inside, Yureka offers 2GB RAM along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor. In terms of cameras, the device comes with a 13-megapixel rear shooter and a 5MP front-facing option. Not to mention the device also comes with 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot, Dual-SIM, 4G support and of course running on Cyanogen OS.

Samsung working on a wearable sensor for detecting strokes early

Samsung ESDAP Samsung’s Creativity Lab has been working on a new wearable health sensor for the past two years. This sensor, called the Early Detection Sensor and Algorithm Package (EDSAP), monitors brain waves and give the wearer information to track potential strokes.

EDSAP uses multiple sensors and a complex algorithm that keeps up with brainwave activity. The user can then use a smartphone or tablet to check up on the brainwave activity and predict the probability of a stroke. The sensor won’t do much for treating a stroke, but if the brain waves start to point towards a stroke, you’d know to seek out medical attention before things got serious.

While the sensor can predict the probability of someone having a stroke, it can also keep up with several other neurological health stats, including sleep patterns and stress and anxiety levels.

Currently, the EDSAP is only in the prototype phase, so it won’t see a major hardware release anytime soon. But still, it offers a great proof of concept that could very well make its way into other technology in the medical industry.

Looks Like You Will Be Able To Buy Google’s Nexus Player From A Few More Places Next Week

Nexus Player AH2

If you are craving for Android TV in all its glory then at present, the only option out there is pretty much the Google Nexus Player by Asus. Of course, this year will see the platform hitting many other devices including coming built into TV units by the likes of Sony, Sharp and Philips. But they are still weeks (if not months away). If you want it now, then Nexus Player is the one and only choice. And where can you go and get the Nexus Player? Well, Google of course. The device is up, ready and available to order right now on the Play Store.

However, it also seems that in the coming days there will be a few more places you can also pick up the Nexus player. Interestingly. Newegg is now listing the device on their website which pretty much confirms that you can buy it elsewhere. That said, in spite of the listing going live it is not currently shipping and instead is only up for pre-order. According to the listing, though, the wait will be very minimal as the listed ‘release date’ is scheduled for January 25th. Which is actually Sunday, so it might be Monday to be honest before its starts making its way to you. In terms of price, we’ll, no savings here. Just like the Play Store, the Nexus Player is up for the full retailed $99.99. Likewise, the Asus Gamepad is also available via Newegg and again priced as per Google at $39.99. That said, ordering from Newegg might mean you can save a few bucks on shipping. Google are notorious for charging a bomb for shipping.

On a side note, there also seems to be (limited) reports coming in from redditors that they have started seeing the device in their local Walmart. The device is currently not being listed on the Walmart website but the retailers report that they have seen it in the Walmart electronics department. So it seems Sunday might be a day where the device goes live via a number of places besides Newegg. If you were thinking of picking one up soon then you might want to hold on until Sunday and see what options are available. The price won’t differ wherever you go, but saving on Google’s shipping is still a saving.

Oppo’s New Ad Promotes N3’s Rotating Camera While Mocking Other Smartphone Cameras

AH OppoN3-7

Oppo is an interesting company, interesting indeed. The first Oppo device that got people’s attention outside of Asia was the Oppo N1, a device which launched back in 2013. That thing offered great build quality and along with the rotating camera on top, which looked odd but still impressed people back then. The packaging of that device was also spot on as far as I remember, Oppo did a great job presenting it. The company has released its successor in November last year, the Oppo N3. This thing sports a similar build to the Oppo N1, but offers a spec bump and a new and improved camera, of course. This time around, the shooter on the top is actually motorized and can rotate on its own. This sounds kinda gimmicky, but it seems to work just fine.

The company has just released a new ad for the Oppo N3, and it’s rather funny. No doubt that the camera is the main selling point for this device and the Oppo is trying to assure you of that in this commercial. If you’d like to take a look at the commercial itself, it’s embedded below this article. The ad basically shows a bunch of people trying to take a picture of something located above them, they pull out all sorts of handsets and are trying to position themselves properly in order to take an image, photosphere, panorama or whatever. They are, of course, unable to do that without bumping into each other, falling, stepping onto one another, etc. Oppo did push this a bit too far, of course they did, that’s the whole point of ads, but it’s a nice commercial worth a look, it’s just fun. Let us know what you think.

Oppo N3 features a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080, 403ppi) AMOLED display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz which comes with an Adreno 330 GPU for graphics. 16-megapixel 206-degree rotating camera with OV16825 sensor and f2.2 aperture (dual-LED flash included) is located on the top of this device and serves as both the rear-facing and front-facing snapper. The device features VOOC rapid charging which brings the phone from 0% to 75% charge in just half an hour, 3000mAh battery comes with the device by the way. Android 4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed on this device with Oppo’s ColorOS 2.0 on top of it. The handset measures 161.2 x 77 x 9.9mm and weighs 192 grams.

LG denies G Flex 2 and Snapdragon 810 overheating issues

Report: Samsung Is Interested In Acquiring BlackBerry After All

AH blackberry 1.1

Samsung has confirmed recently that they have no interest of acquiring BlackBerry, despite the earlier report which stated that this Korean giant is looking to do just that, acquire this Canada-based company. Just as we thought this story has come to an end, it seems like it did not. One would think that the confirmation from Samsung would put things to bed, but a new report came in from Financial Post stating otherwise. Financial Post is a very credible source, that’s why we’re paying attention to this report, anyhow, let’s see what’s what.

The Financial Post reports that an unnamed source told them that Samsung is still very much interested in purchasing BlackBerry. He said that Samsung is currently evaluation their options, so the deal is still possible. Financial Post managed to get their hands on a document prepared for Samsung, which basically proves that the company is still very much evaluating whether to acquire BlackBerry or not. This document was prepared by Evercore Partners, which is a New York-based investment bank. This document was drafted in Q4 2014, quite recently in fact.

Samsung wasn’t the only one who denied the news earlier, BlackBerry did that as well, but it seems like that’s not the case. As I said, Financial Post is a reliable source and this sure is interesting, Samsung might still be in. What do you think, should Samsung acquire BlackBerry or not? We all know that BlackBerry isn’t what they used to be, they just didn’t adapt in time and were way too late releasing the BB10 OS and new handsets. Unfortunately for this company, nobody waited for them to catch up and the company got into a really nasty position, a lot of companies were mentioned as possible buyers and it look like Samsung is the only one left on the table.

I’m sure we’ll hear more news regarding this in the coming days / weeks. I personally do believe this is rather credible and that Samsung and BlackBerry are just trying to calm things down before the negotiations commence, but that’s just my opinion of course, make sure to share yours.

Take A Peak At The Upcoming Dead Zebra Series 5 Android Collectibles

Dead Zebra Series 5

If you loved Android then you probably also love the offerings by Andrew Bell and Dead Zebra. That is because these are the guys who periodically bring us a whole bunch of new Android collectible figurines. Back in October came one of my favourites in the form of Lucky Lucy the Halloween cat. This was also followed by a the start of December the series four edition of collectibles. Less than a week after that and with Christmas approaching, the Dead Zebra guys also released some Christmas themed Android tree decoration collectibles, So yes, if you love Android then you probably love Dead Zebra.

Well, following on from Series 4 it looks like the guys over at Dead Zebra are gearing up to release the next in line Series 5 of their Android collectible range. The actual collectibles won’t be on sale for another few weeks but that doesn’t stop them giving us a sneak peek of what’s to come and that is exactly what has happened. Two of the collectibles are now available to see as part of their first previous instalment. The first of the two is the very lovable (although infinitely sad looking) Android Panda. This one is designed by Google and as you can see is just about the cutest thing since…well ever.

Alongside the Google Panda we are also getting a sneak peak at Sk8 Cop. The name might suggest he is a cop who skates and well…he is. However, he is one that (according to Dead Zebra) likes to confiscate skateboards off of no-good kids to use for himself. This Dead Zebra offering is being brought to you by Gary Ham. As already mentioned, these are part of the Series 5 collection and will be available to buy in a few weeks. Traditionally, these items do sell out quite quickly as they are a limited number sort of thing so you may want to be quick when they are eventually available. In the meantime though, why don’t you let us know what your favorite Dead Zebra collectible is? And make sure to check out Dead Zebra via the source link below.

Report: Xiaomi Might Launch The Mi Band Successor Soon

Xiaomi logo_4

We’re seeing all kinds of smart devices these days, and wearables are a huge part of that equation. Smartwatches and fitness trackers, in particular, have been extremely popular last year, we’ve seen a ton of them launched in 2014. Xiaomi launched their very own fitness tracker offering as well, the unbelievably affordable Mi Band smartband. This thing was priced at 79 Yuan ($13) at launch and is an extremely affordable way for you to track your fitness and reach a certain goal. Unfortunately though, like all Xiaomi devices, this thing was officially available only in China, you could / can get one from resellers though.

That being said, Xiaomi has launched a bunch of devices already this year, and we’re only getting started. The company has launched the Redmi 2, Mi Note, Mi Note Pro, Mi Headphones and Mi Box Mini devices in January, I hope I’m not forgetting something, because Xiaomi really is going all in this year. Anyhow, according to some comments by Hugo Barra on Weibo (Chinese social network), Xiaomi might be ready to launch a successor to the Mi Band. The team that is responsible for the launch of the Mi Band is getting ready to launch something, it doesn’t have to be the Mi Band 2, but something is up.

Xiaomi has lots going for them this year. Company’s CEO has already teased that they’ll announce some sort of international expansion in February, they’ve launched a bunch of devices already and now this… it seems like this China-based company is trying to get a head start this year and really push its limits. Let me remind you that we’re talking about a really young company here, Xiaomi was founded back in 2010, they sold 19 million smartphones in 2013 and in 2014 that number jumped all the way to 61 million. This Chinese smartphone vendor plans on selling 100 million devices in 2014, it will be interesting to see if they can pull it off.

Anyhow, did you have a chance to test out the original Mi Band? Do you think Xiaomi is planning to release the follow-up so soon, or is the team behind Mi Band going to release something else this time around?

Sony Officially Announces The Xperia Z3 Purple Diamond Edition Handset

Purple Xperia Z3_3

The Xperia Z3 is Sony’s current flagship handset and is regarded as one of the best (Android) smartphones of 2014. This phone is available since September last year and is Sony’s second flagship of 2014, they released the Z2 in Q1 2014. Anyhow, the Z3 was available in Black, White, Copper and Silver Green color choices, but another colors choice just joined the Z3 ranks, the one that has leaked several times lately. You guessed it, I’m talking about a purple variant of this device.

This thing leaked yesterday, and Sony has just officially announced the new Purple-coloured Xperia Z3. They’re calling this thing the Xperia Z3 Purple Diamond Edition, a mouthful if you ask me, but alright. This variant of the device will launch by the end of 2015, says Sony. Keep in mind that the phone will launch in Hong Kong initially, and a will cost HK$ 4,998 at launch ($645). Sony unfortunately did not mention if / when this handset will be available on other markets, hopefully they’ll clear that up soon.

The specifications of this thing remain unchanged though, only the color is different. We’re looking at a 5.2-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS LCD Triluminous display along with 3GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 128GB). This handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. On the back of the device, you’ll find a 20.7-megapixel camera and a LED flash while there’s a 2.2-megapixel shooter up front. Xperia Z3 comes with 3100mAh battery which should be able to get you through the day without issues and Android 4.4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed on the device with Sony’s UI on top of it. 146 x 72 x 7.3mm are the device’s measurements and it weighs 152 grams.

That being said, do you like this new color? I personally am not a big fan of purple-colored phones, but I have to admit this looks nice. Do you own the Xperia Z3 already, if yes, do you like that handset? Let us know what you think, we’d love to hear from you, as always.

Sponsored App Review: DU Battery Saver

dumain

DU Battery Saver is yet another Android app from DU Apps Studio, who you might know from the fairly decent DU Speed Booster used by many Android users. DU Battery Saver is an app that combines a number of neat features into one app. You’re always given a countdown of how long your battery is going to last, the ability to optimize things automatically, set your modes to keep your battery running as smoothly as possible, and the ability to take a detailed look at which apps have been using your battery up. All-in-all, DU Battery Saver sure looks like a comprehensive battery app and there has to be a reason over 100 Million users have downloaded it, so let’s take a look and find out, shall we?

To get started with DU Battery Saver, a quick download from the Play Store is all that’s needed. Once you launch the app for the first time, you’ll see an estimate of how much longer your battery is going to last as well as the option to optimize things.

2015-01-14 17.02.34

When you hit the optimize button, an automated process will start to look through the running apps on your device to see what it can do to help make the most of your remaining battery life. Apparently, this process extended my battery life by almost an hour when compared with the screenshot above.

2015-01-14 17.04.01 (1)

A wholly more enjoyable feature to me were the Saver modes, of which there are a handful split into normal and ‘smart’.

dubatterymodes

With these modes, you can create your own, and give them individual names, something that has to be one of my favorite features of the app. Here, I can go ahead and create a mode called “Night Out”, when I’m out for the evening is when I need my battery to last the longest, so I can create a mode to make sure I have a battery left by the time I get home.

2015-01-14 17.03.20

Here, you can change all sorts of things like WiFi being enabled or disabled and basically turn none-essential things off and adjust the brightness as well. These profiles are a nice idea and giving users some sort of control over what happens to their device is an important thing to see offered with DU Battery Saver.

2015-01-14 17.03.31

There’s more to DU Battery Saver with the ability to monitor what happens on your device with the Monitor tab, a nice way of seeing which apps are using the lion’s share of your battery.

2015-01-14 17.14.18

You’re also given a notification that lets you see your battery life in percentage all the time and more info when you pull down your notification tray.

2015-01-14 17.14.36

There’s even a part of the app that can help make sure you properly charge your device:

2015-01-14 17.04.33

I’ve always been skeptical about battery saving apps, and DU Battery Saver isn’t about to change that. However, I can definitely see some value here. If battery life is an important aspect of your experience and you need to get the most out of your device, then this is a decent option. I don’t agree with the one-touch optimization tool because, as far as I can make out, there’s nothing done here beyond killing running apps. Outside of that though, and there are some genuinely useful features, like the ability to create custom profiles for different scenarios and times of day. For me, I want a profile that makes the most of my battery life when I’m out for the evening, but others might have one for when they’re staying somewhere overnight without access to a charger, or a long day on the road meeting with clients or whatever. The great thing about the profile feature, is that you can create a mode for you and several of them for different situations. Being able to get advice on charging your device properly and which apps are eating up the battery life on your device is also great for average users who might not know this sort of stuff.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – A smooth app that runs nice and quickly, there’s never any waiting around with this.

  • Features (5/5) – With every box you could want ticked for a battery saving app, DU Battery Saver offers users excellent value and many features to keep their battery ticking all day and then some.

  • Theme (4/5) – A good-looking app, DU Battery Saver is a unique themed battery app that looks the part.

  • Overall (4/5) – DU Battery Saver is a solid app, and while I don’t agree with just killing apps to save battery, there are many other features here that make this an excellent app to have installed on your smartphone.

Pros

  • Easy to use, even for average users that don’t fully understand the technicalities of Battery Life on Android.

  • DU Battery Saver offers great value for users looking to make the most of their battery life and can help educate users on which apps are the most power hungry.

  • Saver modes are fully customizable and make for a great way of extending your battery life on your terms.

  • Looks good and has a simple interface that’s easy to navigate.

Cons

  • Killing apps doesn’t really do much for battery life in the long run, as they’re only going to reopen.

  • A battery saving mode that adapts to your regular usage would be truly helpful for average users.

With the vast amount of battery savers already available on the Play Store, it’s no surprise that DU Battery Saver is so popular. It offers many features other apps don’t and it looks the part as well. From a respected Android developer, this is an app that everyone looking to make the most out of their battery life and I really liked features such as the customizable modes to build a battery saver mode to suit your usage during different times of day and scenarios. All-in-all, this is an app that offers great value and it’s easy to see why it’s been downloaded so many times since its release.
