Hooks is the One Notification App to Rule Them All

Trying to keep track of new movies, TV shows, weather, and everything else in life can be sometimes a real pain. Thanks to a new app available for Android called Hooks, you can notified about a great deal of things, all from one single application.

For example, you can set notifications for when a new episode of Game of Thrones airs, or when a new Quentin Tarantino movie is released. Additionally, users can set alerts for upcoming weather in the area, track incoming packages from a large amount of couriers (FedEx, UPS, etc), and a ton more. These examples don’t even break the surface of what kind of notifications you can receive.

On top of the usefulness, the app looks and feels great, utilizing Material Design to the fullest. Adding notifications is smooth and seamless, thanks to the floating action bar. The dedicated pullout bar lets you access existing notifications, as well as Favorites.

If you need help in the notification game, grab Hooks right now.

Action Launcher 3 Update Introduces Quickbar, a Customizable Google Bar for Your Home Screen

Action Launcher 3 received an update today that includes one major new feature that gives your home screen more power and control than ever – the Quickbar.

With the Quickbar, you get to take the Google Search bar that sits on your home screen and customize the hell out of it. That means you can add app shortcuts to it (like Google Play, music apps, Instagram, etc.), menus full of favorite contacts or settings, and buttons for pulling out your side drawer. You can even customize how the Google Search function operates when tapped (voice, overlay, or the Google app).

There are presets to get you going, but you can fully customize the shortcuts and order of them as you so choose.

I’ve got to be honest – the new features that Chris Lacy has added to Action Launcher 3 over the past couple of updates have really got me considered a switch off of Nova.

The update is live now.

Report: Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Won’t Feature a MicroSD Card Slot

When potential buyers learned the Galaxy S6 would not feature a microSD slot, it’s possible they quickly looked elsewhere to fill their smartphone needs. Samsung has long championed removable batteries and SD card slots, but with its latest flagship device, it looks like the company is headed in a different direction.

Now, with the Galaxy Note 5 just months away, folks may want to embrace the idea that it, too, won’t feature a removable battery or expandable storage.

As detailed by SamMobile, Samsung included the fastest internal storage system available in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, called UFS 2.0 (Universal Flash Storage). When directly compared to eMMC 5.0 memory found in competitor flagships, performance of UFS 2.0 proves its worthiness for most users on the market. Couple this inclusion with Samsung’s need to slim down design of its smartphones, it may have become an easier choice to simply axe the microSD slot altogether.

For the Note 5, we can likely expect the same thing. Samsung will want to keep it slim, staying to true to the design standards they introduced on the Galaxy S6, but not only that, UFS 2.0 utilizes a separate memory controller (data transfer management), different than the kind used by eMMC 5.0 memory. Coupling UFS 2.0 and a memory controller used for a different solution may prove to be too large of an obstacle to even attempt, lending more credit to the idea that Samsung is leaving expandable storage in the past.

Lastly, look at Apple. Since the beginning, Apple has sold iPhones and iPads with differing memory tiers. You want more storage on your iPhone? You pay a premium to the manufacturer — no slapping in a cheap microSD card you got off Amazon during a flash sale. Samsung introduced this new structure to the Galaxy lineup earlier this year, and from what we can tell, the company had zero issues selling millions of phones across the globe. In the long run, for Samsung, it becomes cheaper and more profitable to cut expandable storage support from smartphones.

If the Galaxy Note 5 does launch with no removable battery and zero support for expandable storage, would you care?

Celebrities Don’t Need Tinder to Get Laid, ‘Verified Profiles’ Added Anyway

The same as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, Tinder is bringing Verified Profiles to its service. If you don’t already know what Tinder is, it’s a dating service where you swipe left (no) and right (yes) on potential mates. It’s a simple idea, but Tinder has become an important tool for those who shy away from meeting attractive strangers in real life.

The Verified Profiles will be used to allow celebrities, athletes, and other notable members of our society to stand above the rest of us regulars. When you view these verified profiles, a single blue checkmark will be placed by their photos, letting you know not to expect any reciprocated feelings of attraction.

This change is rolling out now to Tinder, so be on the lookout for a few celebs in your area. If you reside in Montana or one of the Dakotas, you may not see any Verified Profiles during your usage of the Tinder service.

Best of luck on your hunt for a lover, friends.

Watch the Official Gameplay Trailer for Star Wars: Uprising RPG

We still don’t have an official launch date for Star Wars: Uprising, except for sometime in Fall, but that won’t stop me from getting excited for the upcoming role-playing game from Kabam. Set between Episode VI and The Force Awakens, you design and equip your own character, then set out to become the hero the Star Wars galaxy needs.

During gameplay, players will link up with friends to create allies, then battle the Empire in real-time co-op battles within sectors. Some of the battle locations revealed so far are Hoth, Cloud City, and Burnin Konn.

If you are a Star Wars fan, this should be a fun title to consume your time, given its launch a bit ahead of the theatrical release of The Force Awakens.

Excited for Episode VII? I am.

OnePlus 2 Will Have 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM

I can’t tell what the bigger announcement is from OnePlus, that the OnePlus 2 will have 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM or that they are done with this obnoxious (t)rollout of features until they unveil the phone on July 27. I’m leaning towards the latter. Actually no, I’m fully invested in the latter. OnePlus may have made a heck of a phone last year in the OnePlus One (our review), but my lord, they are the most obnoxious company on Earth with this #hypetrain garbage they continually vomit to keep their name in headlines. So, yay for no more feature puke!

With that out of the way, yes, the phone will have 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Why? Because the Snapdragon 810 processor can take advantage of it and because it’s easy on batteries. It’s also faster than LPDDR3 RAM, so there’s that.

As a recap of the OnePlus 2 thus far:

Deal: Buy a Galaxy Note 4 at Full Retail, Get $200 Rebate From Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will more than likely be introduced in two months at Berlin’s IFA conference. If you don’t care and would rather have last year’s Galaxy Note 4 at a discounted rate, then well, Samsung has a deal for you. If you buy a Galaxy Note 4 between today and July 26 at full retail, they will send you a rebate check of $200.

According to Samsung’s dedicated site for this promo, the deal does not include the Note 4 from Sprint or US Cellular, but that should mean that T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T models are fair game. As long as you buy the phone from a “participating carrier or national retailer of your choice,” you should qualify for the $200. Of course, we can’t find a list of who those carriers and retailers are, so you’ll need to check with potential retailers before diving in.

At the link below, you can submit your information to get the ball rolling on your rebate post-purchase. Samsung says it should take about 8 weeks for your $200 check to ship.

That’s not a bad deal. For example at Verizon, you would spend $699, but then receive $200 in the form of a check. $499 for a Note 4 is a good price.

Samsung Q2 Profits Slide Again, Galaxy S6 Supply Shortages Blamed

Samsung was looking for big numbers in Q2 this year, hoping the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge would carry the manufacturer solidly into the second half of 2015, but with its Q2 earnings guidance released, it appears early supply shortages hindered higher profit possibilities.

According to the guidance, overall Q2 expectations have been lowered, but that does not mean Samsung had a rough quarter. Although, industry analysts would usually argue that point. Samsung’s estimates operating profit falling by about 4% from last year to $6.13 billion, with sales reaching about $42.5 billion. This time last year, Samsung posted $6.25 billion in operating profit.

The saying goes, “you’re either growing or you’re dying,” and with Samsung’s numbers falling year-over-year, even while not at a staggering rate, the industry seems worried. Samsung will continue to have a target on its back from overseas competitors, such as Xiaomi and Huawei, so the company will likely market the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 to great lengths to make up for any lost ground.

Detailed earnings information for Q2 will be released later this month.

Moto X (1st Gen) on AT&T Gets Its Lollipop Soak Test

Last week, Motorola told us that the Lollipop update for the AT&T Moto X (1st gen) was almost ready for your phone, they were just waiting on AT&T to give it the green light. AT&T must have signed off on it yesterday, because soak test invites for an “early preview of a new software release” went out to Motorola Feedback Network members. That software is Android 5.1, of course.

Assuming the test starts today or tomorrow and goes well, the rest of you could have the update on your AT&T Moto X (1st gen) within the week. The last couple of Lollipop updates for devices like the Moto X (2nd gen) and DROID Turbo on Verizon pushed out to all quite quickly after the soak test started.

We’ll keep you updated on the status of the update.

Cheers C, B, A, S, D, and D!
