Give the Gift of Data on Verizon, $10 for 1GB Billed to Your Account

Let’s face it, the times are changing. Instead of gifting hideous Christmas sweaters or gift cards, you can now give the gift of free cellular data, brought to you by Verizon. Through Verizon’s website or through the Verizon Messages app (on Android), you can gift 1GB of high-speed LTE data to a loved one, priced at $10 that is billed directly to your account.

Verizon states that this free 1GB of data can be used for whatever, including streaming Netflix, watching NFL Mobile, or whatever else your loved one decides to use it on.

To purchase this 1GB of data, open up the Verizon Messages app on your Android device (once it is updated), go to the eGift Catalogue section, then purchase it. The $10 will be billed directly to your account. On a desktop, through your account on Verizon’s website, you will find the gift giving section. On both desktop and mobile, you will be able to customize a message to send along with the 1GB of data.

On your friend’s side, they will receive a text message with a link to claim their 1GB of data.

Will you be gifting any data this holiday season?

Yep, That New Google Play UI is Finally Rolling Out to Everyone (on the Web Too)

Remember that new Google Play UI that was teased back in early October, the one we said was starting to rollout the next day? Turns out it didn’t really rollout to many for a good month. But on Friday or Saturday of last week, and continuing on through today, everyone seems to be getting the new look, which features separated front pages for “Apps & Games” and “Entertainment.”

You can see the new look above, but also through this original post.

On a related note, the web version of Google Play is also getting a mini-makeover to match thee new mobile app version. The Google Play web store is now defaulting to an “Entertainment” section, with sections dedicated to music, movies, books, comics, etc. instead of apps and games like it used to. In order to access apps, you have to slide over and click the “Apps” button on the left side.

The new UI also features a carousel at the top for current promotions running or other highlighted products from Google.

Everyone seeing the new update?

Motorola Details Upcoming Cyber Monday Deals, 25% Off Moto X (2nd Gen) and 50% Off Moto 360 (1st Gen)

Motorola is gearing up Cyber Monday, like everyone else on the Interwebz, detailing the deals you can expect to see on its website. Right now, Motorola lists three deals that you can look forward to, but we do hope to see additional deals come Monday.

Kicking it off is 25% off a Moto X (2nd Gen) 64GB, bringing the price down from $399 to $299. This deal can be had from within Moto Maker, where you can choose how to customize the device to your liking. Naturally, if you choose for more expensive custom options, your price will go up.

Motorola will also carry the Moto 360 (1st Gen) at 50% off, bringing its price down from $299 to $149. Now, please note, this is the 1st Gen model, and over on Amazon, you can already purchase this device with many different models to choose from starting at about $140. I will say, this must be one of the weaker “deals” in Cyber Monday history.

Lastly, those looking for a Moto G (2nd Gen) can purchase one for just $99, down from the MSRP of $179.99. That’s over 40% off the list price for the phone. But again, this is the 2nd Gen model, not the 3rd Gen that is currently available for about $170 on Amazon.

You will notice Motorola does not list a single device that was made for the 2015 device lineup. No Moto X Pure Edition, no Moto 360 (2nd Gen), and no Moto G (3rd Gen). Why? Who knows, but that’s why we hope Motorola is saving something special for those who visit their website on Monday. No promises, though.

All of these deals kick off on Monday, November 30 at 11:00 AM CT.

Use Android Pay and Google Will Donate to Special Needs Education Projects

Android Pay and Google.org are teaming up with DonorsChoose.org to support the 6.4 million children in the US education system with special needs. Starting today and running through December 31, every time you use Android Pay, Google is donating a dollar to special needs education projects, up to $1 million. Not only that, but on Black Friday, when you use Android Pay to purchase goods, Google will double their contribution to $2.

Google states that Android Pay is available at over a million locations across the US, so there are more places than ever where you can buy what you need, and help a good cause.

To get set up with Android Pay, you will first need a device that supports NFC payments. That would basically be any new mid-range and top-tier smartphone, with exception to the OnePlus 2. To get started, download Android Pay from Google Play, put your credit or debit card on file, and that’s it.

Google Really Loves Star Wars, as Evidenced by This Easter Egg

We wrote up Google’s spectacular Star Wars themes for apps yesterday, but today, another disturbance in the Force has been felt, originating from the folks down in Mountain View. An easter egg has been discovered in Google Search, one which turns your entire list of search results into a text crawl, just as we see in the opening of every Star Wars film. It’s not exactly practical in terms of getting all of your information, but it’s fun to watch.

In order to make this easter egg appear, type “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away” in the Google Search bar on a phone, tablet, or desktop computer. Once you hit enter, you should see a fancy transformation take place, with all of the search results, including videos, turned into a text crawl with yellow text and starry background. Not only that, but Google even plays the music to accompany the text crawl. It’s a beautiful thing.

Watch the video below on how to perform the easter egg, then give it a shot yourself and show everyone else in the office. I am sure they will love it, unless they don’t appreciate Star Wars. In that case, don’t talk to them anymore.

DEAL: Newegg has Nexus 6 for $288, Galaxy S6 Edge for $549, Samsung Wireless Charger for $18

After looking through Newegg’s massive big Black Friday sales event this morning, we picked out a couple of items that we thought may be of interest.

The first is a brand new Nexus 6 32GB for just $288.99. As far as I can tell, that’s the lowest price we have seen on this phone to date. Now, I know it’s a year old, but trust me when I say that this phone runs so beautifully smooth on Marshmallow. In fact, it’s almost a more buttery experience than what we are seeing on the two new Nexus phones, if you can believe that.

The other two deals we spotted are for an unlocked Galaxy S6 Edge at just $549. You can even get that crazy-looking green model! This is model G925i, which should work without a hiccup on AT&T and T-Mobile. And finally, Samsung’s wireless charger has been discounted down to $18.99. Both prices appear to be cheaper than what any other retailer is selling them at.
