Official Google I/O App Updated for This Year’s Event on Google Play

The official Google I/O app received an update today to get it ready for the 2015 event. As you all know, I/O takes place on May 28 and 29 in San Francisco and the app is one of the best ways for attendees and non-attendees to keep up with the action. This app also always serves as a vehicle for Google to show off the latest in Android app design, which still happens to be Material Design

The app is quite robust, giving users control over an agenda and personalized schedule, the ability to watch live streams of sessions and the keynote, and a vector-based map of the conference. For those planning to attend, the app also gives you an option to pre-configure WiFi.

Here is the full list of features:

  • Explore the conference agenda, with details on themes, topics and speakers
  • Add events to a personalized schedule
  • Get reminders before events in “My schedule” start
  • Watch the keynote and sessions live stream
  • Sync your schedule between all of your devices and the I/O website
  • Guide yourself using the vector-based conference map
  • Follow public social I/O related conversations on Google+ and Twitter
  • See I/O content from previous years in the Video screen
  • Use the Widget to check your upcoming events directly from your home screen
  • *Exclusive for In person attendees:* — Take advantage of facilitated pre-event WiFi configuration

Nova Launcher Updated to Version 4.0, Brings All the Material Design Goodness

An update is being pushed out to Nova Launcher this afternoon, which should now be live for most users on Google Play.

If you have been a part of the Nova Launcher beta program, you should not see too many changes, as this build is merely moving all of those big UI changes into the “stable” version of the app.

Inside, users can expect to see switched up settings and dialog menus, plus additional animations. On top of that, there are new icons, bundled wallpapers, and much more.

Be sure to grab this update through Google Play, and see why everyone and their mother are still rocking Nova Launcher.

What’s New

Full Material Design

  • All settings screens/dialogs
  • More animations
  • Edit Shortcut dialog tinted based on colors of the icon

Huawei is Hosting an Event on June 2 Where They are “Unlocking” Something

Huawei just sent out a round of invites to a press event for US press that is taking place on June 2. That’s the week following Google I/O, in case you were wondering.

What’s in store? Good question. The invite tells us to “see what we’re unlocking next,” so I would imagine an unlocked phone of some sort. It could be the P8 for the US or something budget-friendly, although we just got the SnapTo a month ago

If you were hoping for Huawei’s rumored Nexus, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This event is taking place June 2, not November, where Google would be more ready to talk about its next flagship phone.

Guesses?

Tap an Avatar to See Recent Conversations, Contact Info, and More in New Gmail for Android

Google announced through Google+ today that Gmail on Android is receiving an update that includes a couple improvements all based on user feedback.

For one, you can now tap on contact avatars in emails to see a full history, including recent conversations, contact info, and more robust details about the person should there be a Google+ account attached. Items like people you have in common, recent G+ posts, their birthday, place of employment, etc. can all be in there.

The update also includes an improved account adding experience for those using non-Gmail addresses.

The update is rolling out slowly as usual, but you can sideload the newest .apk below.

Moto E (2nd Gen) 4G LTE Now Receiving Update to Android 5.1

It looks like Moto E (2nd Gen) 4G LTE owners are in for a treat today, as Motorola appears to be pushing out an update to Android 5.1. The update is arriving on phones as build 23.11.15, which is the same version we first outed a week ago when we pointed out the fact that Motorola was on the verge of unleashing a wave of 5.1 updates to a variety of devices.

At least one of our readers, along with a number of Moto E 4G LTE owners over at XDA with version XT1527 of the phone are seeing the update pop up. Keep in mind that as far as we can tell, these are not soak testers, they are receiving the update as if it were live and rolling out in stages.

We haven’t seen the update yet on our Moto E 4G LTE, but will continue to check over the next few days.

Google Fit Gets Distance and Calories Burned Tracking, Fitness History, Widget and Watch Face, in Update

Google Fit received a feature-packed update today on Android. The update introduces distance and calories burned tracking, along with an improved fitness history, new widget, and a watch face, so that you can always stay on top of your goals.

In order to start tracking distance and calories burned, you will need to update your profile information to include gender, height, and weight. Once that step is complete, Google will be able to let you know how far you have gone in a day and estimate the number of calories you burned.

With the new fitness history, Google Fit now shows you a timeline of activities that can be grouped by days, weeks or months.

Finally, Google added a widget for home screens and a new watch face for those with an Android Wear device. Since fitness trackers always want to know their current status, both of these new additions should help.

Galaxy S6 Update Improves Fingerprint Recognition, Drawing Option in Photo Editor, and More

Our international variant of the Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920I) received an update today that introduces improved fingerprint recognition and accessory compatibility, an enhanced interface for Email, Music, S planner, and other apps, and adds a new feature to the Photo editor.

We will have to spend some time with the fingerprint scanner now to see if it has improved, but it was already pretty good. As for the “enhanced” interfaces in Samsung’s apps, I couldn’t tell you what has changed. I don’t use any of them, but after opening up the Music app on updated and non-updated phones, I can’t even see a difference. With the Photo Editor, I am seeing a new drawing tool after the update that includes some pretty advanced drawing options from pen or brush types, to color pickers, thickness, and more. It did require me to install the S Pen SDK, though.

The update arrives as build VU1AOE3 (still Android 5.0.2) and weighs in at roughly 161MB.

This is why we share deals on unlocked versions of phones like the Galaxy S6, because they tend to get updates before any other models. These phones aren’t tied to carriers, so Samsung can essentially push updates at will, just like this one.

If you own an international variant of the S6 or S6 Edge, be sure to jump into Settings>About>Software update and check to see if your phone is ready.

This is the LG G Pad X on Its Way to Verizon

Yesterday, retired leaker @evleaks told us to expect a never-before-seen LG tablet on Verizon in the near future. He called it the G Pad X, which sounds a lot like a continuation of LG’s G Pad line of tablets that included the G Pad 8.3 LTE. While we still don’t know much in terms of specs, price, or a timeframe for release, Evan did post a picture of the device today.

In the image above, you can see a tablet that looks a lot like last year’s G Pad 8.3, but has a slightly tweaked back design with a faux-metal middle area. We still have the dual-speaker setup and left-corner positioned camera from last year’s tablet, along with a front panel that appears to want to hang out in portrait mode. The device is running Lollipop and LG’s UX skin. Oh, Verizon managed to brand it twice as well.

Still care about tablets?

Reported Photos of AT&T Galaxy S6 Active Hit the Web

According to photos posted yesterday onto GSM Arena, the Galaxy S6 Active from Samsung is real, and is coming to AT&T, again. Previous renditions of Active devices have hit AT&T, so the idea that the carrier scored yet another exclusive should surprise no one.

As we can see in the photos, if they are to be believed, Samsung keeps the overall design of the Galaxy S6 intact, but throws on a massive tank case to prevent any damage to the device should you drop it. Given its Active name, this device should also be water and dust proof.

For specs, it is reported that the phone should feature all of the same top-tier specs that are found on the Galaxy S6. That would be a 5.1″ QHD Super AMOLED display, Exynos octa-core processor, and 16MP rear-facing camera. One major difference is the inclusion of a 3,500mAh battery, up from the regular 2,550mAh battery found in the Galaxy S6.

The camera appears to be in the same spot, but if you will avert your attention to the backside, you can see that Samsung has placed the speaker there, moving it from the bottom of the phone. In addition, navigation buttons have been hardened on the frontside, exactly as they were on previous models of the Active.

We have no date or pricing for the Galaxy S6 Active, but apparently, it’s coming.

Thinking about picking one up?

Deal: HTC One M8 on AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint Just $299 Today Best Buy

At the end of our HTC One M9 review, we told you to skip the phone and instead opt for last year’s HTC One M8 should you really love the all-metal design and style of HTC’s products. The One M8 is a better phone. It looks better. It has a better camera, even if it is a bit of a gimmick. It has a better display. It’s battery life is somehow, confusingly better. And best of all, it’s waaaaaaay cheaper.

Take today’s deal for example, where you can buy a brand new HTC One M8 for AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint at just $299 through Best Buy. That’s $299 for a phone at full retail, without a contract or payment plan. You pay $299 and then walk away with a phone that you own.

The deal includes “limited quantities” and is only available today, so be quick if interested.

Sprint Says Nexus 5 is Getting Android 5.1.1 “LMY48B” Update This Week

According to Sprint support, the Nexus 5 is set to receive an update this week to Android 5.1.1 build LMY48B (Sprint says it was supposed to start May 11). The update is listed as being nothing more than the update to 5.1.1 with included “security enhancements.” Tough to say what those security enhancements are, but in general, the update is expected to be quite minor.

LMY48B is a brand new never-before-seen build number for Android, so that’s at least something. Assuming Sprint is correct, the update will also be accompanied by a factory image at any moment. We’ll let you know when that shows up.

Until then, be on the lookout for the over-the-air update and grab that .zip file URL. Here are instructions on how to do that.
