QuickPic 3.8 update brings photo and video transfers over your WiFi network

QuickPic 3.8 WiFi transfer update

For as long as anyone can remember, QuickPic has been the go-to gallery replacement app for Android devices. With its minimal, no fuss UI, we’ve been using it faithfully since the G1 days and never looked back. While gallery apps are great for viewing images stored on our phones and tablets, transferring photos and videos from one device to another has always been sorta tricky.

With Android devices, this is typically accomplished 1 of 2 inefficient ways: you can either Android Beam photos/video 1-by-1 over Bluetooth (finicky), or upload photos/videos to a cloud storage account (more stable), only to then have to re-download everything onto another device. It’s tedious and often times more trouble than it’s worth. Surely there’s got to be a better way? There is. And it’s in QuickPic’s latest update.

In QuickPic 3.8 (fresh off the Google Play Store), you can simply share photos and videos over a wireless network. This is done by either selecting photos beforehand, or by jumping into QuickPic’s new Transfer menu on both devices and selecting photos from there. Keep in mind both devices will need to be connected to the same wireless network in order to send/receive photos and videos — this is not WiFi direct. If for some reason a network isn’t present, you’ll have to enable WiFi hotspot on one of the devices, then connect to it with the other as a workaround. Transfers are lightning quick and stored in a new “Quick Transfer” folder for later viewing.

We just tried it out on our Nexus 5 running Lollipop and Moto X (2nd Gen) on KitKat and everything worked without a hitch. It really is stupid easy and finally takes away some of the pains associated with photo and video transfers. Whether you’re looking to move photos over to a newly upgraded device, or share photos/videos between your smartphone or tablet — you’re going to want to give QuickPic a shot.

As usual, QuickPic remains as robust a gallery app as ever and is free to download from the Google Play Store. Link provided below.

T-Mobile Nationwide 4G LTE

The pace at which T-Mobile has been moving is incredible. Constantly, the carrier is hitting milestones way ahead of schedule. The latest milestone is the reach of its 4G LTE network. Facebook Improves Mobile Photo Upload

2-write-story_photo Today Facebook announced some future improvements to its mobile photo uploads. The update, which will be rolling out today to iPhone and Android users, gives the user the ability to select multiple photos in the exact order he wishes to publish them.

You just choose your photos in order, then inspect a preview of the story. You can then write an introduction and captions for each picture. If you want to switch up the order at this point, you can drag and drop photos in the order of your choice. If your picture includes friends, you can tag them after posting and scroll through your new photos like a collage.

OneDrive_Office365_unlimited_storage

Online cloud storage continues to get very competitive. We recently saw Dropbox increase their Pro subscription from 100 GB to 1TB, and now Microsoft it upping the ante by giving away unlimited storage on OneDrive for Office365 subscribers. Considering the starting price for an Office365 subscription goes for $6.99, it’s not a bad deal. OneDrive also offers automatic photo uploads too.

Microsoft says they are rolling this feature out over the next couple of months to Home, Personal, and University customers. If you find yourself a little anxious, you can hit the 2nd source link below to put yourself in front of the line.

Nextbit aims to sync Android app data across all devices with Baton

Nextbit_Logo

Sure I love Android, but it doesn’t mean it’s free from faults. Take app syncing. This is one area I have been harping on for years. I don’t understand why Google hasn’t been able to sync app data properly between devices. It’s something Apple has figured out. You should be able to switch from your phone to your tablet and continue exactly where you left off within the same app.

Well a company called Nextbit is looking to change that with a new product called Baton. Nextbit was founded by former Android executives, Tom Moss and Mike Chan. Baton will sync all apps and data across your devices. This means you can be using one app on your phone and switch to your tablet and continue exactly where you left off. Baton will also allow you to send any app that is open on one device to another device. Plus, your data will always be backed up to your Nextbit profile in the cloud. So when you buy a new phone, your data will be available to that device.

Baton is in private beta, and it’s exclusively on CyanogenMod. I guess if you’re going to pick a custom ROM to run with, CyanogenMod is the best one since it’s so widely available and the most popular. CyanogenMod will also be the exclusive home when it becomes public.

Whether Baton or something like it makes it’s way to all Android devices remains to be seen, but we can only hope.

Full Press Release:

Nextbit Unveils the Future of Mobile

Google Ventures and Accel Partners–backed company releases next step toward ambitious vision of transformative mobile experiences, is available in limited beta exclusively on Cyanogen

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — October 27, 2014 — Nextbit, a company reimagining mobile experiences in the era of the cloud, today unveiled its first products and vision for the future at the inaugural Code/Mobile conference. Founded by former Android executives Tom Moss and Mike Chan, Nextbit is using the skill and vision of professionals from Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Google, HTC, and other tech leaders to build a future where a person’s entire collection of mobile apps and data are always accessible and functional on virtually any device.

By 2018, the average US resident will own nine connected devices. Right now, there’s no easy way for people to enjoy a consistent experience across all of their devices. Nextbit is working to change that with its first new product, called Baton. This new software is designed to backup and sync the sum total of a person’s apps and data, not only making it effortless to switch between devices, but insuring against the devastation of lost data from damaged or stolen devices. At Code/Mobile, Nextbit demonstrated Baton, which is now available in private beta.

“Whether I’m reading an article, playing a game, or buying something online, everything comes to a halt if I want to switch devices.” said Tom Moss, Nextbit CEO. “Until now, there hasn’t been a good way to pick up a tablet at the same place you left off on your smartphone. Our mobile activities shouldn’t just be available on a per device basis. That’s why Nextbit is building a future that focuses on the experiences, not the device.”

Nextbit Baton offers several benefits to users, including:

  • Sync: Keeps apps and data in sync across multiple devices, allowing users to move fluidly from one device to the next without missing a beat.

  • Pass: Send any open app in its current state to another device, saving time and eliminating the tedious process of manually finding and opening apps on different devices.

  • Backup and restore: Save apps and data to your Nextbit profile in the cloud, so you can always get your apps back on any device.

Nextbit’s private beta is exclusively on CyanogenMod, the leading open-source, community-driven Android OS backed by Cyanogen Inc. The future public release of Nextbit will be available first on the commercially distributed Cyanogen operating system.

“Cyanogen continues to reimagine Android by introducing bold new firsts,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen. “Nextbit represents one of these platform firsts that could only manifest on a truly open Android. We enable Baton to become a native OS level feature, creating huge benefit for our users.”

This private beta is an important step toward Nextbit’s larger vision for a mobile world where computing is ubiquitous and people are untethered from the limits of devices. Users can sign up for the private beta at nextbit.com/beta.

Wear apps on the Moto 360 not displayed correctly when language is set to German after 4.4W.2 update

Android-Wear-rubics-cube-bug

The 4.4W.2 update started rolling last week, and it appears a pretty big bug was found on the Moto 360 by Albrecht Noll, developer of Android Wear Faces Creator. If the language is set to German, apps are displayed as if the Moto 360 is square, not round. We aren’t sure if any other languages are affected, but we do know that everything is working okay with English.

You can clearly see the issue from the image above and below. The left is when German is selected, and the right is when English is selected. The issue is not only affecting apps, but even the stock launcher as you can see in the image below.

Let’s hope Google gets a fix out soon.

Sprint HTC One M8 (including Harman Kardon Edition) now receiving EYE Experience + Android 4.4.4 update

htc one m8 wm_3

After the Sprint HTC One M8 (and One E8) saw an international WiFi calling update last week, it’s now time for something bigger. Both the T-Mobile and Verizon HTC One M8 have already gotten an update to Android 4.4.4 with HTC’s new EYE Experience. Now that same update is heading to Sprint.

This update includes both the regular and Harman Kardon models of the One M8, but for whatever reason it seems the E8 was left out this time around. According to HTC VP of Product Mo Versi, the update is scheduled to hit devices as soon as tonight and here’s what you expect from the new camera features:

  • Face Tracking: Track up to 4 faces during a video chat, and ensure that they stay within the camera’s angle of view.

  • Split Capture: Record the action in front of you and yourself at the same time. Or, record the action first and then record a commentary.

  • Face Fusion: Using 2 photos such as your selfie and a photo of your favorite celebrity, try merging your looks together.

  • Voice Selfie: Take a picture or video selfie by just saying “Say Cheese” or “Action.”

  • Live Makeup: Smoothen your skin before taking your selfie.

  • Photo Booth: Take 4 selfies and merge them into a single picture.

This now leaves AT&T as the last major US carrier to push out the update, but given the purpose of the update is mainly to add a few new camera features, we’re sure approval is just around the corner. To check if the update is ready for your device, jump into your Settings > System updates > HTC Software update > Check now. Good luck!

James Franco takes the Motorola DROID Turbo for a spin in new teaser [VIDEO]

James Franco Motorola Droid Turbo

The launch of the Motorola DROID Turbo is fast approaching and if Verizon’s deep pockets are any indication, we’re preparing ourselves for an absolute media blitz. How can we be so sure? Well, they now have superstar actor James Franco tweeting out teaser videos for the upcoming phone.

Looking like something filmed by JJ Ambrams, the video titled “James Franco, the Bike Phantom” shows Franco casually biking around with his red DROID Turbo as onlookers watch in amazement as he virtually teleports around the streets. You can here them say, “He’s fast on that thing,” as he zips off into the night.

DroidLanding also posted a teaser video of their own, but it’s a lot more mysterious and tough to make out. All we can see is a red scarf and what appears to be someone’s hand grabbing for a gargoyle statue of some sort (possibly falling off a building?). It’s tough to say for sure, but you can find the tweet with embedded video here .

Baton brings Apple-like Handoff feature to CyanogenMod, signup for private beta here

Nextbit Baton for CyanogenMod

As more and more Android users are finding themselves living in a multiple device world — tablets, smartwatches, smartphones — it’s getting increasingly more difficult to manage all the apps and data between these devices. While cloud save data is one way to tackle this problem, a new feature coming soon to Cyanogen in private beta is making this easier than ever before.

It’s called Baton and it was birthed out of the CodeMobile conference from a new startup — comprised of ex-Google, Apple, Dropbox and Amazon minds — called Nextbit. Simply put, Baton allows users to share data between devices, handing off current progress inside an app from a smartphone to a tablet (or vice versa). It’s very similar to the way Apple’s Handoff feature works, only this doesn’t require any extra coding from developers — it just works. Here’s the quick feature set:

  • Sync: Keeps apps and data in sync across multiple devices, allowing users to move fluidly from one device to the next without missing a beat.

  • Pass: Send any open app in its current state to another device, saving time and eliminating the tedious process of manually finding, downloading, and opening apps on different devices.

  • Backup and restore: Save apps and data to your Nextbit profile in the cloud, so you can always get your apps back on any device.

While certainly cool, Baton will only available to devices running CyanogenMod but users will need to apply on Nextbit’s site if they want in on the beta. While Cyanogen Inc is just the first step in Nextbit’s plans for Baton, they weren’t ready to reveal plans to support other devices (or ROMs) just yet.

Google Docs, Drive, Sheets, And Slides Have Gone Down Today For Some Users

Drive-ThumbThe downside to cloud services is that they're of absolutely no use when they're not available. Today Google Docs, Drive, Sheets, and Slides have all been unavailable for some of the people that have come to depend on them.

Google is aware of the issue, and it's showing a service disruption for each service on its apps status dashboard page. This is delineated in the screenshot below by the presence of an orange icon next to Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Robin Labs Launches Less.Mail, An Voice-Controlled Artificial Intelligence App That Supposedly Handles Email For You

Now Robin Labs has launched a kind of real product called Less.Mail, but it's invite only and still in the early stages. Less.Mail is an app that leverages artificial intelligence to manage your email by voice.

So, the video sure makes it look magical. When asked to decline politely, Less.Mail manages to avoid cursing or sending naked selfies, so that's good.

Nexus Player rumored to arrive in Europe next year

Google_Nexus_Player_02

According to a report published online earlier today, Google’s recently-announced Nexus Player won’t be making its way to Europe until the first quarter of 2015, even though the device will be launching in the United States next Monday, November 3.

The rationale behind the decision to delay the European launch until next year is not that Google can’t produce enough units to serve other markets, but is, in fact, because it wants to ensure that there is plenty of content available for International customers.

Industry insiders claim that Google is working in partnership with local services in the UK, such as Netflix, Now TV, Spotify and BBC iPlayer to develop exclusive, “optimized” applications for the device, in addition signing deals with all of the necessary service providers.

Recent rumors suggest that the Nexus Player will retail for approximately €99 ($125) in Europe and will definitely touchdown in Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UK before the end of March 2015. It will be available through the Play Store and from several independent retailers.
