The wait for Cyanogenmod 12 is finally over for HTC’s flagship Nexus 9 tablet. The first nightly build for the tab is available on CM’s download page, and getting it flashed to your device isn’t too much of a hassle, considering this a Nexus tablet.
Cyanogenmod 12 is built from Lollipop’s source code, so you fortunately won’t have to abandon any features here. The first builds are going to be nightly builds, though, so there may be a few bugs here and there.
If you want to get started, hit the link below to grab the download.

Earlier this week, we and a few other publications got an email from Xiaomi inviting us to an event in San Francisco. Which I will be heading out to next week to see what it’s all about. The first thought that crossed everyone’s mind was, Xiaomi is expanding into the US. They quickly denied that, which most companies would anyways, even if they are coming to the US now. So what exactly are they doing here? Well, we did also hear that they were opening up an R&D factory here in the US. So it could be in San Francisco, which wouldn’t surprise me. And it’s looking like this will be a small event, almost like a meet and greet type event.
So what’s Xiaomi planning on doing next week? Well, it looks like they are going to be letting journalists like myself meet with various Xiaomi VP’s, which is not common for us. Seeing as they are primarily in Asia, and we are primarily in the USA. So it’s a good chance to get to meet some of their VP’s like Hugo Barra and Lin Bin. Even though we know Hugo Barra from his time at Google. But this could in fact be the first step to Xiaomi moving into the US. Especially with them opening up an R&D facility here in the US.
Xiaomi is hugely popular over in China and other Asian countries. During my two trips to Beijing late last year for a couple of Meizu’s events, I saw a ton of Xiaomi smartphones. And some are very difficult to see that they are Xiaomi phones because they look so much like Samsung’s and Apple’s smartphones. That’s one thing they really need to change for the western markets. They can’t bring a phone over here that looks almost exactly like an iPhone. Apple would have a lot of fun with that though. They also need to get their inventory straightened out. Customers here won’t be happy with their flash sales. Where their Mi4 is available at 9am tomorrow and is sold out in 10 seconds. That won’t fly. And as we’ve seen with OnePlus, an invite system won’t fly either.
Nonetheless, we’ll be in San Francisco next week to see what Xiaomi has planned for the US. And we’ll have a better idea of what they have planned next Thursday. Make sure you stay tuned to Android Headlines for all the details on the Xiaomi event taking place on February 12th.

There is little doubt that the last few months have been the Lollipop months of the Android era. Ever since Google unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop and released the source code to AOSP, everyone has been obsessed with when Lollipop will land on their devices. In fact, it has not only been the device owners that have been obsessed with Lollipop but also the manufacturers. Most of the big names of the android world were quick to jump on each others bandwagon and all announced a similar time-frame for when they will release the android update to all their devices. As such, we now find ourselves back in among Lollipop hype again now, with all those carriers working hard to make sure their promises are kept…to the best of their ability.
One of those manufacturers who were quick out of the door with their Lollipop update was LG. The other South Korean manufacturer was quick to push out Lollipop to the LG G3, although it still has not reached all devices, on all carriers, in all regional areas. Well, the very latest on the onwards LG G3 Lollipop saga is that the update has now started rolling out in the Middle East. The latest news came from a user who saw the update landing in the region and let Phonearena (source link below) know.
However, what is really interesting, is that the user who reported the update landing was not reporting that he had personally received the update. Instead the information came from an LG G3 handset the user had come across randomly in a phone shop. As you can see in the images below, the user was testing out the phone in the shop and noted that it had already received the update to Android 5.0 and as such decided to take a few snaps so everyone else would know the update is in fact en route. Next time you are passing your local phone shop it might be worth popping in and quickly checking what devices Lollipop has arrived on. Make sure to let us know if do spot any new landing Lollipop updates when out and about.

…Apparently three!
It has been an interesting week in the carrier news sphere. The headline which really caught people’s imagination was the rumor that Sprint was thinking about possibly buying a load of Radio Shack outlets. Of course, there was also the suggestion that they might be thinking of going into partnership with Radio Shack as some sort of joint-venture. But that was more ludicrous than the idea of them buying all the stores.
Or so we thought. All the mystery disappeared and we found out that Sprint is indeed entering a strange partnership with Radio Shack. To sum up, Sprint announced that the two companies would join forces and combine their goods under one roof in 1750 Radio Shack stores nationwide. According to the understanding, the stores will continue to effectively operate as Radio Shack stores, selling Radio Shack products but one-third of the store will be a microcosm for Sprint. A Sprint store within a Radio Shack store. Kinda like how there always used to be a McDonalds inside a Walmart.
So what’s in for Sprint? Well, they will effectively gain an outlet in 1750 more locations. Bearing in mind, that Sprint currently only operate from 1100 locations, this in effect (almost) triples their physical on-street exposure. The very fact that they have bought into 1750 locations that no one ever visits, does not seem to worry them as much as it should. Of course, there is the added benefit of Sprint not only promoting their Sprint products in 1750 ghost town shops but also the ability to promote Boost and Virgin Mobile too. These are both MVNOs owned by Sprint and in all reality are what is likely to be the real driving force behind this coalition.
So what’s in it for Radio Shack? Well, this one will be a shorter paragraph. With the much-needed revenue that is being presumably pumped in by Sprint, gives the shareholders of Radio Shack a glimmer of hope of not completely going into liquidation. Radio Shack was in serious trouble and were in the process of filing for bankruptcy. So this merger (of sorts) will give the company some breathing room. Of course, this is all dependent on whether the deal proposed is approved by the bankruptcy hearing.
So what should we expect from our newly formed ‘Sprint Shacks’? Well, the truth is, probably not very much. If you are already a sprint customer, then chances are you will have a few more locations that you can visit. Although from Sprint’s perspective, no win there as they already have you. For non-Sprint customers then presumably you now have even more of a reason to avoid going to a Radio Shack. Either way though, if you do find yourself in a Sprint Shack in the near future, at least you will be able to pick up an overpriced cable to go with your call plan you do not intend to buy. What this deal is unlikely to do is bring a solution to either Radio Shack’s or Sprint’s long term problems, which ironically are the same – attracting new customers. That said, the two do seem to have some commonalities in the fact that they are both limited in their scope, reach and by the looks of it, vision. So yes, to answer the question, as Sprint is only entitled to a third of the floor space, it would seem you can fit three Sprint’s in a Radio Shack.

It's starting to look like Google is getting back into the rhythm of regular releases after the holidays. It feels like forever since the last Play Store update began its rollout. We've got a new version for you, but this one doesn't seem to be sporting any user-facing changes, just a lot of bug fixes. However, a deep look inside reveals a lot to get excited about. If you're eager to get straight to the download, a link is at the bottom.

Chinese and other Asian markets are a growing piece of the smartphone market landscape, but we know the expectations of the buyers in those countries differs from other global markets as there is more emphasis on low price. Apparently one thing that may not be different is interest in wearable devices like smartwatches. To capitalize on that, a newly leaked image suggests Meizu has a device in the works as part of the Blue Charm line of devices.
The leaked image, which may have been pulled from its original posting, purports to show some internal hardware for a Meizu Blue Charm Watch. If true, the device would join the Meizu M1 smartphone and the Meizu Blue Charm Note in the portfolio.
As can be seen in the image, it looks like Meizu has opted to go with a round watch face, following the path of the Motorola Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R. No other details are available about possible specs or other features of a Meizu smartwatch, but odds are the price will be low compared to other devices and it will only be available in China or Asian markets close by.

Piracy is a problem on any platform where installing software is easy, and that certainly includes Android. In a particularly egregious example, the developer of Today Calendar estimates that 85% of the users of the $5.99 premium version of his app have stolen it. What's a responsible Android developer to do? In this case, he's using a creative method to try and annoy illegal users into becoming paid customers.
Pirates who use Today Calendar will now be seeing some of what Jack Underwood describes as "Arrgh - Anti-Pirate Measures." Unlike most conventional DRM, the app won't shut down if it detects an unverified user.

HTC missed its 90-day goal to deliver Android 5.0 upgrades to all owners of the One M8 and One M7. They're very sorry about that. But to give credit where it's due, it does seem like the company is genuinely trying to get its hardware updated as soon as possible. Sprint's One M8 and M7 have both been given the update, European M8 owners got it in late January, and owners of the unlocked, developer edition, and Google Play Edition of both phones should all have the update by now.
