T-Mobile Hosting UnCarrier X Event on November 10 in Los Angeles

Announced today, T-Mobile is hosting an UnCarrier X event, set to take place on November 10 in Los Angeles, CA. T-Mobile’s post regarding the event gives no details or insight as to what we might expect, but the flyer does state, “We Never Hit Pause.”

According to a few T-Mobile fans on Twitter, they happen to think T-Mobile will announce a type of “Video Freedom” service, much like T-Mobile did with Music Freedom. Music Freedom allows users of select music streaming services to listen to unlimited amounts of music, not counting towards their total data usage per month. While the idea of Video Freedom is cool, we will likely have to wait until November 10 to hear what T-Mobile plans on unveiling.

Any ideas what T-Mobile has cooking for UnCarrier X?

Google Announces the ASUS OnHub WiFi Router, Priced at $220

Google introduced a new OnHub WiFi router this morning, this time produced by ASUS. The other OnHub router, currently available for $199, is made by TP-Link. The ASUS OnHub will be available for sale on November 3 for $220, from what should be a solid list of retailers.

What makes the ASUS-made OnHub different? Well, according to Google, this router features Wave Control, which lets you boost the WiFi speed for a particular device by simply waving your hand over the top of the OnHub unit.

For all OnHub devices, ASUS and TP-Link, Google will soon send out an OTA update to units, bringing a new smart antenna algorithm. This update will allow the router to intelligently select the best connection for a device, wherever it may be inside a home. This update will hit existing OnHub devices manually, with no need for the owner to install it.

Pre-orders for the ASUS OnHub are now live on Newegg, with additional retailers opening up pre-orders soon.

Anyone here have an OnHub WiFi router? Do you like it?

Google Play Music to Offer Podcasts!

Google announced this afternoon that it is ready to start offering podcasts on Google Play Music. How awesome is that? Soon, assuming we get approved, you will be able to catch the Droid Life Show through Google Play Music, instead of using whatever other podcast app you had attached yourself to. And not that other podcast apps are bad, but this means you will have a one-stop shop for all your audio needs.

Google says that it is opening up a podcast portal today to podcasters, so that in the near future, their shows will be available on Play Music. Shows will be searchable, but also “will connect new listeners with podcasts based on what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, or what they’re interested in.”

We have already submitted the DL Show and are now “under review.” Hopefully, as Google goes live with podcasts on Play Music, you will not only get the DL Show day one, but your other favorite podcasts too.

If you run a podcast and would like to submit yours for review, hit up this link.

Motorola Talks “Making of” ShatterShield, Shatteproof Displays, and the Turbo 2

Are we skeptical of Motorola’s claim that the DROID Turbo 2’s display is shatterproof? Yeah, a little. But the good news there is that we get to test the hell out of it. In fact, I just dropped the phone off the table I’m sitting at, just to be sure. And yep, it’s still not shattered.

Motorola is also putting some weight behind this shatterproof idea, which they are calling ShatterShield. They are giving the Turbo 2 a 4-year guarantee against shatters or cracks and are even letting you replace the top protective layer of their ShatterShield system, should it appear to have cosmetic issues.

The whole system is built on 5 layers, according to Motorola:

  1. It starts with a rigid aluminum core that provides structural integrity and durability.
  2. On top of that, we’ve added in a stunning AMOLED flexible display. Using a flexible display absorbs shock and makes it possible to flex during a drop versus breaking like most screens.
  3. Then, a dual touch layer with redundancy was created to help it survive accidents. Often, after a drop, the touch layer can go bad and your touch doesn’t work as well. So we‘ve added a failsafe mechanism.
  4. The next layer is the interior lens which provides a clear protective shield that won’t crack or shatter.
  5. Lastly, we topped it off with an exterior lens that has a unique hardcoat that helps protect the display against normal wear and tear.

That sounds like a lot of layers and I’m worried that they will take away from a beautiful display, but that’s just another piece to this phone that we get to test.

Either way, Motorola seems to be pretty proud of this whole idea. And rightfully so. Let’s just hope it can stand up to the hype, because phone display problems are real.

DROID Turbo 2 and MAXX 2 Unboxing and Tour!

Now that the DROID Turbo 2 (right) and DROID MAXX 2 (left) are official, we have had a chance to spend some time with each, thanks to Verizon. In the video below, you’ll see an unboxing of each, along with quick overviews and an even quicker comparison to one another.

My initial impressions of each are sort of that they are familiar phones. The new Turbo 2 is a lot like the Moto X Pure Edition, only a bit wider and with a giant chin. But the soft-touch texture on its backside, along with its software, Motorola dimple, and camera housing, all make for a phone that isn’t exactly new to my hand. That’s not me discounted it, it’s just that this phone feels very familiar.

The same goes for the new MAXX 2, because this is basically just the Moto X Play, only with DROID branding. It actually feels a bit better in hand than the Turbo 2, because its frame is slightly smaller and nestles into your hand much like the Moto X Pure does.

Both phones seem to be built well, which shouldn’t shock you, since these were made by Motorola.

We look forward to spending more time with each over the coming weeks. For now, I’ll leave you with this!

DROID MAXX 2 Specs (Official)

The DROID MAXX 2 may not be the headliner of the two new DROIDs, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. This phone, like its distant cousin, the Moto X Play, is a well-equipped phone but with an even better price that is a heck of a value.

At just $16 per month ($384 full retail), you get a 5.5-inch FHD (1080p) display, 21MP camera, 2GB RAM, 3630mAh battery, 16GB storage with SD card support, 4G LTE, and a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor. Seriously, that’s a pretty decent set of specs for a phone that still drops in under $400. Then again, the Moto X Pure tops it in most areas and is only $15 more. The Nexus 5X is also on-par in many areas, yet starts at just $379.

The phone will go up for purchase on October 29 at Verizon.

Verizon Announces the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID Maxx 2, Available on October 29

Announced this morning at an event in New York City, we have two new DROID phones from Verizon and Motorola, the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID Maxx 2, set to hit the US market on October 29. The DROID Turbo 2 has a retail price of $629, while the DROID Maxx 2 is priced at $384.

The Turbo 2, what most would consider to be the better of the two, features a 5.4″ POLED QHD display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 21MP rear-facing camera, 5MP front-facing camera, 32GB of onboard storage (64GB available exclusively through Moto Maker), expandable storage via microSD slot, TurboPower charging, 3,760 mAh battery, NFC, and Android 5.1 out of the box.

Besides the specs, Motorola has baked in Moto ShatterShield technology into the Turbo 2’s display, meaning that even if you drop this phone right on its display, the screen should not shatter. It is marketed as the world’s first shatterproof display. As stated in Verizon’s press release, “The display and embedded lens are warranted against shattering and cracking for four (4) years from the original date of purchase.” Not only should the device not shatter, but buyers can even customize the device through Moto Maker, offering more than 1,000 ways for you to design the device. On Moto Maker, buyers can opt for a Design Refresh option, granting them the ability to customize a new Turbo 2 device within a two year period after purchase. Do note, you must purchase the device before December 31, 2015 to receive the Design Refresh option.

As for the DROID Maxx 2, it features a 5.5″ 1080p display, 21MP rear camera with dual LED CCT flash, 5MP front-facing camera, Snapdragon 615 processor, 16GB of storage, microSD slot, 3,630mAh battery, and also runs Android 5.1. Both the Maxx 2 and Turbo 2 will receive the Marshmallow update, according to Verizon and Motorola.

Again, the two devices will be available on Verizon’s website and across the US through retailer stores on October 29. The DROID Turbo 2 will be $26/month for 24 months ($624 retail price) or $30/month for 24 months ($720 retail price) with Design Refresh through Moto Maker. The DROID Maxx 2 will be $16 per month for 24 months ($384 retail price).

Deal: HTC RE Camera Drops to $50 for 1 Day Only

HTC’s little periscope-ish, submarine-inspired action cam, the RE, is on sale today for just $50. That’s a pretty good deal! Sure, this camera doesn’t take great pictures, doesn’t have a viewfinder, and only really works best when paired up to a smartphone, but it could come in handy from time to time.

You can take it in water, strap it to your chest while doing fun action stunts, or just pass it around at a party and see what happens. I’ve actually done that last option and came away with some fun photos.

Either way, if you needed a really random camera accessory to add to the collection, today is the day to buy the RE.

Reminder: Motorola and Verizon Announcing New DROIDs Today

You didn’t forget, did you? If so, here is your reminder that Motorola and Verizon are hosting a little media event today in NYC to unveil new DROID phones. We are fully expecting those phones to be the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID MAXX 2

The Turbo 2 should be the flagship of the two, with a 5.5-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 810, 3GB, 20MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, big ol’ battery, Turbo Charging, and Android 5.1.1. The Turbo 2 will also be a part of Motorola’s Moto Maker program, so that owners can customize it, maybe even a second time within two years of owning it. And let’s not forget that Motorola thinks that the phone has a shatterproof display and is prepared to stand behind that claim.

The MAXX 2 is more like a Moto X Play. It’ll likely also have a 5.5-inch display, but lesser resolution (1080p) and RAM, a lower-powered processor, no Moto Maker support, and Android 5.1.1. It may have the bigger battery of the two, though.

We are on hand in New York, so stay tuned for coverage of the event as it happens. Motorola and Verizon will kick things off at 11AM Eastern (8AM Pacific).

Verizon told me that they may post up video at their news site, so if that happens, we will update this post.
