LG G2 Gets Sweet News

gsmarena_001-lg-g2

LG’s hit smartphone of 2013 has finally gotten its turn for a treat. The Korean version of the LG G2 has officially received Lollipop. That means that all of the new, exciting features of Android’s latest version is now available for all users of the fancy device. If you own the Korean version, you should probably go check for the update if you haven’t already. This news, of course, is hardly surprising, considering the video that surfaced a few days back of the LG G2 running an official version of Lollipop.

Here’s to hoping that the new update is bug-free and completely stable!

Samsung Hires new Head of Design Again

section_0_product

After replacing its Head of Design last year due to dismal reviews of the aesthetics of the Galaxy S5, Samsung is again changing things up on the personnel side of things. Lee Dontae, former head of Tangerine, has been hired as the new Head of Design for the Korean tech company. Tangerine, as you may recall, was founded by Jonathan Ive, Apple’s current Senior VP of Design. Lee Dontae has made a name for himself in the world of design, consulting with companies like Samsung, LG, Toyota, and British Airways.

Lee Dontae’s official title is VP and Global Design Head of the Design Management Center. He is hoping to elevate the design prowess across the board, instead of focusing on one product. This is welcome news for tech lovers everywhere, and potentially Samsung’s upcoming sales figures. For quite a while, it seems that Samsung has been stuck in the “Design Doldrums,” with a relatively stagnant aesthetic ideal.

Do you think these changes will help Samsung embark on the next leg of its journey in the right direction? Or will it just be more of the same, to the chagrin of potential customers? LEave a comment below and let us know what you think!

Intel reports record-breaking revenue for 2014, mobile still continues to plummet

Bankruptcy looming for RadioShack, Sprint may purchase stores

radioshack_logo

RadioShack is nearly one hundred years old, but that does not mean it is guaranteed to hit the milestone. The last few years have been especially difficult for the electronics retailer and now it seems that a bankruptcy filing is on the way. To combat bankruptcy and gain some cash, RadioShack is working to sell some of its stores to Sprint. The carrier, who has also had its fair share of troubles recently, would be able to expand with the takeover of many leases belonging to RadioShack. Sprint has been very open about expanding through retail stores; therefore, it is not shocking to hear of interest in RadioShack locations.

AH Primetime: Google Will End Sales Of Explorer Edition Glass, Looks Towards The Future With Next Version

AH Google Glass

All within the span of 24 hours we have learned that Google is handing over the leadership of Google Glass to Tony Fadell, the CEO and leader of Nest who was purchased by Google, and that as part of the change over Google would be ending the Google Glass Explorer program. The end of the Explorer program is due to happen on January 19th which is just four days away, or rather more close to three now that we’re nearing the end of the day here on the west coast, and bringing the Explorer program to a close seems to signify at least one thing. That Google is ready to take Glass in a new direction.

That statement is pretty broad I know, but that’s more so because we have no idea what direction Google wants to take Glass in the first place. Google Glass isn’t going anywhere, that much we’re confident on. The development process for the head worn wearables has been a bit slower than some might have expected when it comes to available glassware(apps for glass)but it was strong nonetheless and it seemed to give off a promising future. In light of(and perhaps because of)stopping the Explorer program which includes the new feature development of the Explorer model edition Glasses, Google is also drawing a close on the sales of the Explorer edition specs. This means you will no longer be able to purchase a pair of the $1,500 beta program wearable glasses.

As it stands you can currently still purchase the Explorer edition of Google Glass from the devices section on Google Play’s desktop interface, but in four days when the Explorer program ends is when they will also stop accepting sales. Unless you’re apparently a business or enterprise customer where Google is slated to continue development and sales of Google Glass. The wearables have seen their fair share of hurdles, from waning developer interest to the more common negative media attention over people having privacy concerns due to the camera and video recording capabilities, but Glass Explorers and enthusiasts, as well as Google had remained positive that this new technology could bring exciting things to the world of wearables.

Google is calling this shift in the adventure of Glass a “graduation” as they are no longer going to be part of the Google X labs, which could be suggesting that they will finally have their own fully fledged division and even perhaps their own building dedicated to future development of the next stage of Google’s first wearable. Many people were speculating that we might end up seeing a consumer version of Google Glass by sometime in 2015, and that is still a possibility as we have just entered into the new year. Google hasn’t given any sort of a timeframe for when the next version of Glass might be available for purchase though, as they only stated in the email announcements about the Explorer program ending that we’ll “see new versions when they’re ready.” How long that might be could be most of this year or halfway into 2016, but whenever Glass decides to show back up in a finished state ready for the public consumption, we’ve heard statements from Google in the past that it would be at a considerably lower price point, and that the design could very well change. It is true that there is tons of shifting around within the Google Glass camp, but it isn’t anything to be worried about as Google still has plenty of excitement over the technology and likely many new ideas. Also, with Fadell now at the helm, we could see some Glass take on a whole new light. Who knows what it might look like, but how cool would it be if the next version of Glass could interact with all your Nest products in the home?

Samsung’s new design chief could build the Galaxy S we’ve always wanted

Tangerine Huawei tablet concept 1

After a reshuffling at Samsung’s design department last May, the South Korean tech giant is welcoming yet another new addition to their design team: former Tangerine co-CEO Don Tae Lee. Tangerine is credited with redesigning both British Airway’s and Virgin Australia’s sophisticated business class cabins.

Not too long ago, KBS even did a documentary on Lee, the “Korean business man at the forefront of the global design industry.” On the mobile side of things, Tangerine also worked with Huawei for a few concept devices back in 2011 that never quite made it to market. You can see those crazy devices in the video down below.

As Samsung’s new global design chief, Lee will work from the Design Management Center to lead the overall design of products, which includes everything from washers, televisions, refrigerators and yes, even mobile devices.

Before you get your hopes up, there’s no way to say for certain how much influence Lee will have on, say, the Samsung Galaxy S7 (the Galaxy S6 is a little too far down the pipeline). But it’s definitely nice to see Samsung moving down a path where they take design a little more seriously — especially after last year’s ho-hum Galaxy S5.

Given Lee’s previous work experience at Tangerine — a London-based design agency founded by Apple’s own Jony Ive — we’d say Samsung is in much better hands.

[New Android Wear app] DressWatch matches your watch with your outfit

dresswatch_app_icon

Not all watch faces available on an Android Wear device can be adjusted. For those that require a complete outfit with the watch included, there is DressWatch. The app matches a users watch face with the outfit they are wearing. It does so by grabbing two colors from an image uploaded or one already taken. The user can change the colors to their liking if they do not like what DressWatch has offered. Rather than hunting for a watch face and risking disappointment, DressWatch ensures a user can match.

Alleged LG G4 specifications leak, Snapdragon 810 and 16MP camera included

LG_G3_Back_Rear_Controls_LG_Logo_TA

The most anticipated devices to launch in early 2015 will come from Samsung and HTC. However, it seems that LG can be added to the mix. Why? Information involving the LG G4 has been trickling in over the last few weeks. And now we have learned about some of its alleged specifications. Unsurprisingly, the Snapdragon 810 from Qualcomm will be the processor selected. The amount of RAM joining the processor is 3GB. A system dump of the Android 5.0 operating system makes it appear as if a 16MP camera will be included. In all (if true), LG has quite the handset on its hands.

A launch at Mobile World Congress 2015 in March is a possibility for the LG G4.

Samsung Brings On Co-President Of Design Firm Co-Founded By Apple’s Jony Ive

AH Samsung Galaxy S5 -14 LOGO

Most things shared between Apple and Samsung probably consist of heated words and arguments in court battles, as they certainly aren’t sharing patents with eachother. In the midst of all the lawsuits though it’s nice when we can sit back and have a tiny chuckle at the little things, like Apple apparently hiring Samsung to produce the System-On-Chips for the first generation Apple Watch despite their trying to sue each other in court, or Samsung hiring on the head designer(Lee Don-Tae)of Tangerine. Not familiar with Tangerine? It’s a London based design firm which was Co-Founded by Apple’s Jony Ive. Yes that Jony Ive, the guy who was lead designer on projects like the iPhone and the iPad.

Lee Don-Tae used to be Co-President of Tangerine before getting signed on to lead all of Samsung Electronic’s design centers. Just thinking about the court battles going on between Apple and Samsung currently, and about the cases that had gone on between the two tech giants in the past which were actually over the design of the Galaxy S devices looking too similar to the iPhone, you can’t help but laugh that Samsung now employs a person who use to work with Apple’s VP of design.

Now just because Samsung has hired someone that used to work with the guy who designed Apple’s iPhones and iPads, doesn’t mean that they’ll end up with more devices in the future that look similar, although it would be kind of hilarious.(not for Apple of course)Samsung is likely looking for Lee to bring the same or similar sort of design style from Tangerine to their products going forward though, which according to the Korean media is what Ive did for Apple with the devices he oversaw as well as the design of iOS 7. Lee is now going to be heading the design centers for the entire company globally, so that means we should be seeing his design queues in just about all of Samsung’s products, even mobile devices. This could be a good thing for Samsung as they haven’t exactly been praised for the award winning mobile designs. Not that their smartphones and tablets look bad by any means, but many have criticized them for not being as elegant as made out to be.

UpTo Now Keeping Users “Up To” Date Via The New Chrome Browser Extension

UpTo

What are you up to? Anything happening? Plans for this Friday night? You can answer all of those questions by simply creating events in your Google Calendar(or whatever calendar app you happen to use on your smartphone)and one that helps create those calendar events is UpTo, the calendar that lets you let others know, what you’re “up to” at any given moment. It’s much more than a replacement calendar app though. in fact, it’s not even really meant as a replacement. It works with your Google calendar you see, while letting you have access to a gazillion other calendars whenever you need, and now you can do all of that with a little more ease thanks to UpTo’s brand new Chrome extension.

The beauty behind UpTo is that has a wealth of calendars dedicated to different things like sports schedules, dates for concerts you might have purchased tickets to, or want to purchase tickets to, TV schedules so you can stay up to date on your favorite shows and all the latest episodes for them, and you can even add calendars for music and movie premiers and even enter in calendars for popular meetups. It does all this alongside all of your normal Google Calendar entries so you don’t have to bounce back and forth between multiple different calendars or apps. It’s all handled within one.

While the Chrome Extension is the focus here as its new and having the capability from within your desktop chrome browser is certainly nice, they offer an Android version of the app too of course, which comes complete with a homescreen widget so you can see things at a glance without having to open up the calendar at all. UpTo also syncs your other existing calendars besides Google, like Facebook Events and Outlook, so it really is rather comprehensive. All in all this is a pretty good calendar app worth checking out, although we’re still waiting on a couple of features like full Android Wear support and perhaps a Material Design refresh to line it up more with the style of Android Lollipop.
