Google gets Patent for Projector on Google Glass

google-glass-projector-patent-2 A patent, filed April 2013 and published Thursday, was granted to Google relating to its Google Glass. The patent portrayed a Google Glass headset with a projector built into the headset. It seems that the projector version may be a modified version of the current Google Glass, or a revision altogether.

The purpose of the projector, according to the patent, is spreading information to those all around you. This would help cater to the niche of people that don’t want to be completely isolated from all of those around them while wearing technology. The ability to project things seen prior would help connect people and aid in communication.

There’s no telling when we will see this hit the “shelves,” if ever, since Google has bigger fish to fry right now (Lollipop, Android Wear, connecting your car and house to your Android life), but if it does, it will be the next step on the road to making Google Glass the piece of tech that everyone will actually want.

HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 is 40% faster, coming soon

HTC Rapid Charger 2 Qualcomm

HTC has listed their new Rapid Charger 2.0 on their website. The unit takes advantage of Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology and will charge certain HTC phones up to 40 percent faster than a standard charger.

If you are now yelling “take my money” while throwing cash at your computer screen, you may sit back down. The HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 does not yet have pricing or availability listed, but be sure it’s coming soon.

The HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 on a supported device will bring a 60 percent charge to a 3300mAh battery in just 30 minutes.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology began rolling out with the Snapdragon 800 SoC, and is available on most newer Snapdragon chipsets as well. However, even though this is a Qualcomm based technology, and the Snapdragon 800 and higher SoCs power a great number of devices, HTC for now is reporting just a small handful of rapid charge capable units, as follows:

If you have the HTC One (M7), the HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 will still work for you, as it backwards support the Quick Charge 1.0 tech found on the original One as well. Just don’t expect the same super speedy results.

Head on over to the HTC accessories page for the HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 to learn more and to keep an eye out for when it starts selling and shipping.

Do you see the need for rapid charging, or are you a plug-it-in-at-night-and-start-every-day-fresh kind of user?

Buff Knight – Indie app of the day

What is Buff Knight?

Buff Knight is a mix between an infinite runner game and an RPG. You run, kill enemies, collect items and gold, and then when you die, you upgrade and try again. There are two version of this game in the Play Store. There is a free version with ads and in app purchases and there is a paid version for $1.99 that has no ads or in app purchases.

Here’s how the game works. You select whether or not you want to do endless mode or story mode. You then start the game and your knight starts to run. As you run, you collect items and gold while your hero kills bad guys. When you run into them, you do damage to them and they do damage to you. You heal with healing potions and you can heal your magic points with magic potions. You can also attack nearby enemies with magic, juggle bad guys for damage bonuses, and there are some other fun little extras in there.

Buff Knight features charming retro graphics that feel more polished. The story is told in a pixelated font to give it that old school feel. If you opt for the free version, each run will end with a full screen ad and it’s actually not that bad. There is a story line and it’s a bit simple. You must eventually defeat the Red Vile Dragon and save the Pretty Princess.

Run, sir knight!

PROS

  • A fun mixture of infinite runner game mechanics with RPG style leveling up.

  • Two version of the game: free with in app purchases or paid with no in app purchases.

  • Retro graphics and music are pleasant.

  • Google Play Games achievements!

  • The near constant tapping to collect things, use spells, and juggle bad guys keeps this game fun long after others would've become repetitive and boring.

CONS

  • If you don't like 2D infinite runner style games, you won't like this.

  • Feels more like an arcade game than an RPG even if it has RPG elements.

8.0

It’s worth noting that this game was developed by a single person. When you take that into consideration that makes this game pretty impressive. If you get bored with repetitive tasks easily then this game will probably be no different but it is a fairly entertaining time waster that’s worth checking out.

Verizon gives more data to the More Everything plan

verizon_more_everything_plan_logo

Carriers are already in the holiday spirit and November has only begun. Verizon, like Sprint and AT&T, is giving more data to its customers. The More Everything plan has more data allotted to it. The $80 plan now supplies 10GB to customers and the $100 plan has been raised to 15GB of data. New customers as well as existing customers are able to take advantage of Verizon’s promotional pricing.

Hit the break to see what else Verizon is offering new customers.

And for customers purchasing a device with Verizon for the first time, the carrier is throwing in a $150 port-in credit. Signing a two-year contract or joining the Edge program is necessary to receive the $150 credit on a new 4G LTE smartphone. This, like the aforementioned More Everything plan change, is part of a promotional that will end at some point.

Are any of the carriers’ pricing changes making you consider switching? Let us know in the comments.

First Impressions Of Google's Nexus 6: Really Big, Really Beautiful

thumb

The Nexus 6 came in for a landing on my doorstep yesterday, and I've been happily exploring Google's new phablet ever since. Because I've had it for just one day, there's no way I could write anything resembling a review, so instead I thought it may be fun to do a very basic "initial impressions" post. There are a few things that immediately strike me about the device, so I'll discuss those here, with more details to come in the full review.

First Impressions Of Google's Nexus 6: Really Big, Really Beautiful was written by the awesome team at Android Police.

The best new Android apps and games from October 2014

It’s the end of October and we hope everyone has/had a safe and fun Halloween! We’re getting into November, the weather is getting colder for some (warmer for others) and it’s time to round up the best new Android apps and games from October of 2014!

Camera51 Android apps Camera51

[Price: Free]

First up is Camera51. This unique camera app is for those out there are not the best photographers. It uses a built-in algorithm that helps people take better pictures by suggesting where they hold the camera when they hit the shutter button. It does use quite a bit of CPU because it is making a lot of computations and it’s not recommended if you have an older or a low end device. It is free with no in app purchases and that’s always good news too.

djay 2 android apps djay 2

[Price: $2.99]

djay 2 is already intensely popular on iOS and it’s finally been released on Android as well. It comes with a lot of features and it’s actually quite a bit of fun to use. There is also Spotify support if you use that and it’s $2.99 with no in app purchases. Some reviewers have commented that they wish there were more features so it may not be the best tool for professionals but for average people, it’s more than they had before.

Dragon Quest II android apps Dragon Quest II

[Price: Free]

Square Enix has been borderline ferocious when it comes to re-releasing their old library on Android. One such example is Dragon Quest II which was released this last month. It’s a jRPG originally released by Enix back before they merged with Squaresoft. It has charming retro graphics and one of the more reasonable price tags for a Square Enix title on Android. If you’re a fan of old school jRPGs then you’ll definitely want to check out Dragon Quest II and possibly even their other Dragon Quest re-releases.

Dragon Quest Android apps

es chromecast plugin android apps ES Chromecast Plugin

[Price: Free]

ES Chromecast Plugin is a free plugin in the Google Play Store that grants Chromecast support to the venerable ES File Explorer. It’s a very simple process. You just download and install the plugin through the Google Play Store and you’ll magically have Chromecast support in the regular ES File Explorer app. If you use ES and you have a Chromecast, you should also have this app installed.

inbox by gmail android apps Inbox by Gmail

[Price: Free]

It’s true that Inbox by Gmail is still invite only but invites seem to be getting handed out at ever increasing rates so it won’t be long before everyone has one who wants one. Google’s latest take on email is definitely unique and so far has had polarizing reviews. Some think it’s too cluttered and busy while others love the re-design and functionality. It’s too soon to tell if this is going to be awesome or a bust but for right now it’s pretty awesome.

Journey & Notes android apps Journey & Notes

[Price: Free]

Journey & Notes is one of two applications released by Microsoft. This one is a social media application that’s kind of like Foursquare but focuses on the journey instead of the destination. Like if you were going from the store to the post office, you could check in that you’re making that trip with your preferred mode of transportation. Then other people who take that trip can see any tips or comments you made. It’s not all that much yet but it looks like it could be a lot of fun someday and it’s free so it doesn’t hurt to check it out.

Material Wallpapers Android apps Material Wallpapers (Android L)

[Price: Free]

Material Wallpapers is a simple little application that gives you Material Design inspired wallpapers and a few official wallpapers from Lollipop and the Nexus 6. It’s free with no in app purchases so the lack of content shouldn’t make anyone mad. There isn’t much else to say about it. If you’re looking for some Material style wallpapers then try this one out.

Next Lock Screen android apps Next Lock Screen

[Price: Free]

The other Microsoft app released this last month is Next Lock Screen. It appears over the stock Android lock screen and it’s kind of like Microsoft’s take on Dashclock widget. It’s fairly functional but there are a few things missing here and there that will probably get fixed and improved in future updates. It is free with no in app purchases so it doesn’t cost anything to check it out. Don’t forget that Microsoft did an Android Wear app this month also called Torque that was pretty fun.

Get it on Google Play

nhl 2k android apps NHL 2K

[Price: $7.99 with in app purchases]

NHL 2K was released by 2K Games this last month and it’s probably the most complete hockey game available right now. It’s a little expensive and there are in app purchases but hockey fans really don’t have any other solid options when it comes to a hockey experience on Android. There are several game modes including a couple of fast play arcade modes and a career mode. It also features updated rosters which is always a good thing for a sports game.

Get it on Google Play

NotiWidget Android apps NotiWidget – Notifications

[Price: $1.26]

NotiWidget is a fun application that helps you use notifications on virtually any screen on your device. There is a widget that can be placed on any home screen and on the lock screen which mimics Android Lollipop functionality. There is also a Daydream mode so you can check notifications there as well. The developer has been quite active in fixing bugs and making it more solid and so far the general consensus is that this app is pretty awesome and $1.26 isn’t a bad price.

Get it on Google Play

Ready Contact List Android apps Ready Contact List

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Ready Contact List is an attempted redesign of the contacts app and dialer app. It features some pleasant visuals, some interesting features, and even themes if you get the pro version through in app purchases. You can even do things like check your email between you and one of your contacts while you wait for them to pick up the phone and you have options to further engage with contacts after you hang up the phone. It’s free to use so there’s no harm in checking it out.

Get it on Google Play

Republique Android apps République

[Price: $2.99 with in app purcahses]

République is a new game out this month and it’s probably the best one this list. It features very impressive graphics and game play mechanics as well as a genuinely interesting story line. It uses the Walking Dead-style episodes so you’ll get the first episode when you download the app and you’ll have to buy episodes two and three as in app purchases. So far people seem to really like it and it’s made by the same people who worked on titles like Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R. It looks very impressive and it’s worth a second look.

Get it on Google Play

talon for twitter android apps Talon for Twitter

[Price: $3.99]

Some sad news earlier this month was that Talon for Twitter reached its token limit and that no new people could get it. Some good news is that the developers have released a sequel to Talon for Twitter and it’s called the same thing. This version is for devices running Lollipop only because it has a lot of Material Design and Android 5.0 stuff that isn’t backwards compatible. Once you get Android Lollipop and you start looking for a Twitter client, keep Talon for Twitter in mind because it’s pretty good.

Wrap up

If we missed any awesome Android apps or games that were released in October of 2014, let us know in the comments!
