Video: SIM Swapping on the Moto X Pure Edition

How easy is it to get your new Moto X Pure Edition up and running on your carrier of choice? As easy as swapping in a nano SIM from that carrier. Have activated service on AT&T? Just put your SIM in. Same thing with Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or a variety of prepaid carriers. Remember, the phone is fully unlocked with supported bands for all of the major US carriers, so it should just work out of the box.

Because we wanted to show how easy it is to get your new Moto X Pure Edition working with your carrier of choice, we put together this quick video of a SIM swap from no SIM to AT&T to Verizon within a matter of minutes. It’s amazing how quickly you can get from one network to another with this phone.

That’s actually one of the biggest selling points for Motorola with this phone. Since they aren’t selling it through carriers, they can sell it directly to you and tell you to go with the carrier you want. There aren’t any tricks or gimmicks – you buy the phone and then decide where you want to take it.

You guys know how big we are into unlocked phones. If not, read this post I ran earlier this year on why I will forever buy them to catch up on the benefits. With Motorola giving you a flagship-level phone at just $399 that works everywhere, I get the feeling that more and more of you are going to start going this route. A few years ago, I would have laughed at you if you told me Motorola or another major phone manufacturer was going to make a phone at $400 that I could use on AT&T and Verizon and T-Mobile and Sprint. Oh how far we have come.

Anyways, enjoy the video and your new Moto X Pure Edition.

Where is the Moto X Pure Edition SD Card Slot? In the SIM Tray.

One of the most important features of the Moto X Pure Edition for many is the inclusion of a microSD card slot by Motorola. I wouldn’t be shocked if a majority of buyers went for the $399 16GB model since you can slap in a 128GB microSD card and have all of the storage a smartphone user ever dreamed of. That’s a big deal not only because it reduces the price you may have to spend on the phone, but it also fills a gap left by Samsung after they ditched microSD cards in this year’s line-up of Galaxy phones.

With that in mind, assuming a number of you pick up the Moto X Pure Edition, you may be wondering where the SD card slot is. Since it’s not in a typical side slot, we thought we should make sure you all knew ahead of your phone arriving.

So where is the Moto X Pure Edition SD card slot? It’s in the SIM tray, believe it or not. The nano SIM tray in this phone actually doubles as a microSD card holder. On one side (which is clearly marked), you get to put in a microSD card up to 128GB, and the other side you get to put in your nano SIM of choice.

To see the SIM tray in live action, be on the lookout for a SIM swapping video we have on the way.

Android Pay Requires You to Enable a Secure Lock Screen

Just a quick heads-up, but with Android Pay, things have changed a bit on a security level when compared to Google Wallet. With Android Pay, Google is now requiring that you have a secure lock screen setup in order to use the mobile payment service.

While this is not a dealbreaker or a massive inconvenience for the most part (because security is a good thing), it is something to be aware of. If you are the type to go with a swipe unlock instead of a PIN, password, or pattern, this will be a change that you will have to get used to. For those with a fingerprint sensor enabled as your secure lock option, we think you are in the clear, though the pop-up message you are seeing at the top of this post doesn’t mention that as an option. For those without a fingerprint sensor in their phone (like the Moto X Pure Edition), you are stuck with the PIN, password, or pattern options.

As you can see in the image above, Google is also taking this requirement seriously, saying that they will wipe your Android Pay account of all cards if you try and sign-in but don’t setup a secure lock screen. Well, then.

We’ll have more on Android Pay shortly. If you want to download Android Pay, you can do so here.

Download: LMY48M OTA Updates for Nexus Devices

Over-the-air (OTA) zip download links to LMY48M for Nexus devices are hitting the web, in case you don’t want to mess with flashing factory images, wiping all of your data in the process. For now, we have links to the update for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi, with more sure to be on the way shortly.

As we continue to receive new file URLs that are direct downloads from Google, we will continue to update this post.

Download LMY48M OTA .zips:

*Note – In order to flash a .zip file in adb, be sure to match up the build number on the file to your current or the update will fail. For example, look at the new build number in brackets followed by the build number that it’s coming “from.” In your Settings>About screen, you will want to match up to the “from” build number.

For instructions to sideload using adb, check here. For instructions on how to grab an OTA file, check here.

Moto X Pure Edition Unboxing and Tour!

The Moto X Pure Edition is here! The excitement is needed because this is the 3rd generation of a phone that we called the phone of the year in both 2013 and 2014. Or maybe better put, this pone has some big shoes to fill.

With a Moto Maker designed Moto X Pure Edition (MXPE) in house, we thought we would kick off our coverage as we always do, with a quick unboxing. In this quick video, you’ll see some initial reactions, even though this is the 3rd time I’ve had the phone in hand, the fact that Motorola tossed in a Turbo Charger and free bumper case, both of which do not seem to be affecting the still-rock-bottom price, and another run-through of specs.

If you were looking for an immediate verdict, I obviously don’t have one. But man, this phone feels great in hand, just like the two generations of Moto X before it. Sure, it’s huge – like, really huge – but isn’t everything these days? Over the next week or so, this will be the full time device in my pocket, so expect a review shortly.

Until then, here is out Moto X Pure Edition unboxing!

Star Wars: Uprising Hits Google Play, Takes Place Between Episode VI and The Force Awakens

Kabam’s Star Wars: Uprising game officially hit Google Play, an online RPG experience that allows you to build you very own character in the Star Wars universe. Set between Episode VI and The Force Awakens, players team up to take on the Empire in massive Sector Battles.

Missions take place on known locations, such as Hoth and Cloud City, where you and your squad battle opponents and take on monster bosses. Each character you create has an open skill set, meaning you can customize them however you see fit.

For fans of Star Wars, who have a bit of time to spare to dedicate to the game, it’s a must have.

The app is free to download, but IAPs are available inside for boosting up.

OnePlus, Stop Apologizing, and Just Make Your Phone Available

To begin, I would like to share a quote, first spoken by Lao Tzu. “The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” To me, these few words speak volumes with regard to the way new companies on the block market themselves. Everything is “hype” this and “never settle” that. The fact of the matter is, getting people excited for an unreleased product is incredibly easy. Yell out a few top-tier specs, then slap on an affordable price and boom, now you have the entire Android community praising you.

But then you make the most incredibly poor decisions with marketing, such as a “sexist” contest, destroying perfectly good phones when they should be donated to those in need, and most importantly, not delivering on what you promised for a second year in a row.

If you need me to connect the dots for you, I’m talking about OnePlus

Today, the company issued a formal apology on its forum claiming, “We messed up the launch of the OnePlus 2.” Well, duh, OnePlus. Before any drama began, the company stated that it would be “30-50x easier to get invites,” and frankly, it’s pretty easy to call bullsh*t on that. Don’t get me wrong, making and shipping a smartphone is not easy, especially when a company relies heavily on partners to meet demand, as well as keep the quality of a product up to meet expectations of consumers.

We messed up the launch of the OnePlus 2.

Well, we messed up the launch of the OnePlus One as well. Although inventory levels ramped up eventually, months after the announcement, it was still extremely difficult to buy the device. We comforted ourselves to the fact that we were young, and that we’d learn and show the world we could do better next time around.

The OnePlus 2 first “went on sale” back in early August, and now with invites rolling out slower than ever thanks to a handful of janky USB Type-C ports that the company is working to fix, the list of people waiting for an invite to purchase the device has hit 5 million+. That’s a lot of people waiting for an invite to purchase a phone.

In my mind, a large portion of this issue could be solved if OnePlus would stop making promises and claiming that they are ramping up invite rollouts, only to later come back and apologize that they screwed up. Last year, OnePlus eventually made the original One available, and everyone seemed happy. Did they not learn a single thing? People don’t want apologies, they want results. They want a phone in their hands the day you say it is up for sale. Being put on a 5 million+ invite list, with no idea when or if you will ever see a phone does not cut it, especially in the Android market where a new flagship device is launched every couple of months. And with the holiday season coming, there are now more phones to choose from than ever – even ones that can compete with the OnePlus 2’s price.

To make up for this blunder, OnePlus is hosting an hour long, no invite required sales event. That’s right, no invite required to purchase the OnePlus 2 for a single hour. Single. F*cking. Hour. They have not given out the date or time yet, or how many phones will be available for purchase, but would anyone here like to bet on that site completely crashing within the first 10 seconds and everyone walking away disappointed? Or maybe, everyone is so turned off by OnePlus now that no one will even want the device, going with a phone they can have in their hands today instead, such as the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5, or even customizing and pre-ordering a Moto X Pure Edition. No consumer has to put up with these shenanigans, especially with so many other options to choose from.

I am only speaking as a fellow consumer, someone who enjoys smartphones as much as you do. I think it is big of OnePlus to apologize, even if it is multiple times, but at this point, just shut up and work on making your phone available for those of us who still want it.

Pokémon GO, Developed by Niantic Labs and Nintendo, Set to Launch in 2016

Announced this morning, possibly the largest mobile gaming announcement in Android and iOS history, Niantic Labs (now independent from Google) is teaming up with the Pokémon Company and Nintendo to create Pokémon GO. Think Ingress, but instead of capturing portals and being super nerdy, you are going outside and catching Pokémon, then battling them against fellow players.

To play, you simply open up your Pokémon GO application and hunt Pokémon in your area. Using Pokéballs, you capture the creatures, and can then trade them and battle them with anyone in the area. Much like Ingress, the game relies on people actually doing a bit of work running around and doing things outside.

Sadly, the game won’t launch for iOS or Android until 2016, so we have a ways to go. However, it is stated in the press release that the game will be completely free to play.

Below, view the greatest trailer for anything Pokémon related ever, ever. My favorite part is when Mewtwo just starts beating the sh*t out of everyone’s pet Pokémon, but then, of course, they win in the end. So flippin’ adorable.

As soon as this game hits Google Play (in 2016), we will let you know, and then I will see you out in the streets collecting Pokémon.

Pokémon GO Allows Players to Catch ‘em All in the Real World

Pokémon, Niantic, and Nintendo Collaborating on New Mobile Pokémon Game Slated for Launch in 2016

TOKYO, JAPAN—September 10, 2015—The Pokémon Company, Niantic, Inc., and Nintendo Co., Ltd. today announced their collaboration on a new project for mobile devices called Pokémon GO. This ground breaking mobile game will encourage fans to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon. Pokémon GO will be available for download at no charge on the App Store and Google Play in 2016.

In the past, the Pokémon video game series has used real world locations like the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, as well as New York and Paris, as inspiration for its fantasy settings. In Pokémon GO, players will be able to catch, trade, and battle in the real world by utilizing location information. Pokémon GO’s gameplay experience goes beyond what appears on screen as players explore their neighborhoods, communities and the world they live in to discover Pokémon alongside friends and other players. Junichi Masuda, game director of the Pokémon video game series at GAME FREAK inc. will be contributing to the project. His involvement will ensure that the fun of Pokémon makes its way into Pokémon GO, while developing new types of gameplay and thinking of ways to connect this project with the main series of Pokémon video games. In-app purchases will be available in Pokémon GO.

“Our challenge was to develop a great game for smart phone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Pokémon GO is the answer to that challenge.”

“Pokémon GO is a wonderful combination of Niantic’s real world gaming platform and one of the most beloved franchises in popular culture,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “Our partnership with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo is an exciting step forward in real-world gaming and using technology to help players discover the world and people around them.”

Players will be able to enhance their Pokémon GO experience even when they are looking away from their smartphones by using a unique device called Pokémon GO Plus.  By pressing a button on Pokémon GO Plus, simple in-game actions like catching a Pokémon can be performed. Developed and manufactured by Nintendo Co., Ltd., Pokémon GO Plus will connect to smartphones via Bluetooth and by flashing and vibrating, will notify players about events like the appearance of a Pokémon nearby.

Pokémon GO is being developed by Niantic, Inc. Originally founded by Google Earth co-creator John Hanke as a start-up within Google, Niantic is known for creating Ingress, the augmented reality mobile game which utilizes GPS technology to fuel a sci-fi story encompassing the entire world. Ingress currently has 12 million downloads worldwide.

Android Pay Launches Today!

Google announced moments ago that the rollout of Android Pay on Android beings today. We thought today might be the day, after seeing the new Google Wallet app last night, but yep, it’s now official.

Like the old Google Wallet, Android Pay (which will replace your Google Wallet app) works with any NFC-enabled Android device running Android 4.4+. Sorry, OnePlus 2 owners. Android Pay supports credit and debit cards from American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa. Citi and Wells Fargo will be available “in the next few days,” while Capitol One is “coming soon.”

At launch, companies like American Eagle, Macy’s, Pepsi, Subway, Staples, Whole Foods, and Bloomingdales are all outfitted with NFC-ready terminals. Well, they have been for some time, but now you are paying with Android Pay instead of Google Wallet.

The update starts rolling out today to Google Wallet users, so be on the lookout for an update.

This Could be Our First Look at the DROID Turbo 2

Last week, we caught wind of a new Motorola device called the Moto X Force that was said to be on its way to the US as a new DROID Turbo 2. This week, @upleaks posted a photo of this alleged device, DROID branding included. The famed leaker also mentioned that it’s coming to Verizon exclusively – no shocker there.

From the picture, we can see “DROID” branding at the bottom of its backside, similarly to where it was placed on last year’s DROID Turbo. We are also getting a triangular pattern like the one found on a leaked DROID from earlier this year. On the front, we have some sort of odd speaker arrangement towards the bottom of the device, along with a big ol’ Verizon check (branding!). Up top, there are either two cameras on the front of this phone, or this is a fake image, or Motorola is doing some weird sensor things that are behind anything our mind can comprehend at the moment.

And that’s really all that is new. Remember, @upleaks previously said that this phone was “shatterproof.” Whatever that means.

Thoughts?
