Create your own Sense 7 themes for the HTC One M9 using their handy web tool
If you’ve got a little time to kill this weekend, why not create a theme for the now available HTC One M9? HTC recently launched a handy web tool which allows anyone — both novices and pros alike — to build their own Sense 7 theme. The site is pretty intuitive and easy to use, while at the same time providing enough customizable UI elements that you can take it as far as you’d like.
You can pick different wallpapers (or your own) for placement on several HTC apps: home screen, lock screen, app drawer, Dot View app, or messaging apps — then tweak all the colors and icons to your liking. From there, you can even change up the sounds and font, then save everything to your account and post online for other Sense 7 users to download. Veteran themers can try out HTC Themes’ Maker Pro section to really get in depth.
According the landing page, HTC Themes will soon have its own app for theme creation on the go, although it’s currently linking to the BlinkFeed app on Google Play. In either case, HTC Themes is something to check out while you debate picking up an HTC One M9.

YouTube is now teasing Android users with 4K 60fps K-pop videos
Technology moves fast and the folks at YouTube are doing their best to stay ahead of the curve. In recent months, we’ve seen Google take new steps to fortify YouTube with a handful of new features and enhancements to keep bleeding edge viewers happy.
By now you’ve heard virtual reality is gearing up to become the next big thing in tech. Although actual VR content is scarce, YouTube recently launch 360-degree 3D videos viewable through the Android app and Chrome web browser. And while most of us are still watching movies/TV shows on our 1080p televisions, love it or hate, we’re now seeing smartphones move to higher-resolution 2K displays. With that, Google added a 1440p option in the YouTube for Android app.
Today, YouTube is now going 1-step above normal 4K steaming, where they’re now experimenting with 4K resolution video running at a blistering 60 frames per second. It’s enough to bring anyone desktop PC to its knees, with our 3 month old MacBook Pro stuttering and freezing like it was on dial up.
Unfortunately for Android users — as with the rest of YouTube’s 60fps content — this is desktop only for now. Not that we would even stream at 4K/60 on our smartphone (the Snapdragon 810 caps at 1080p/120) but 2K would be nice. We’re not sure how much longer this will be the case, but can Android users get a little 60fps love, Google?

New shake-up at HTC as designer Becker announces departure
HTC’s management team has been shaken again this week as their VP of Industrial Design, Jonah Becker, has announced he is departing from the company. Becker took over from his predecessor Scott Croyle less than a year ago as the lead designer for the company. Those two, along with Claude Zellweger, were principals with One & Co, a design firm that HTC acquired back in 2008. Zellweger will continue to work on connected products for HTC’s line, but a statement from the company says Creative Director Daniel Hundt will be taking over Becker’s role and will focus on the company’s smartphones.
According to some sources, there is a growing struggle within HTC between the design team and the sales team. This could be the reason HTC has seen two lead designers leave the company now within the space of a year.
HTC issued the following statement concerning Becker’s departure:
We can confirm that Jonah Becker has left HTC; he had been with the Company since HTC acquired One & Co over six years ago. We would like to thank Jonah for his work with HTC, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. He has been succeeded by Daniel Hundt, based in our San Francisco design office.
Becker’s move comes only one week after Peter Chou moved on from his role as CEO to lead the new Future Development Lab. In his place, chairwoman Cher Wang took over as CEO. Thus far there is no indication that Becker’s decision was directly related to that change in leadership.

Spotify ready to hit the road on Android Auto
Android Auto, Google’s platform to connect your vehicle to your smartphone and related services, is still slowly working its way to the market. When automobiles start hitting showrooms with Android Auto support built-in, users with Spotify accounts will be glad to know they can access the service through Android Auto.
Spotify has released an update to their Android app that now supports Android Auto. There are a few aftermarket head units on the market now that support Android Auto, so owners of those units will be able to take advantage of this new Spotify feature.
Along with the addition of Android Auto support, Spotify indicates the Discover feature has “gone horizontal” and the daily charts have been improved. You can grab the Spotify app using one of the links below.

Android Audio Weekly: T-Mobile’s Music Freedom Offer Now Covers 31 Music Streaming Services
If you’re a big music listener, then T-Mobile has to be the best network for you right now, of course, that is if their coverage suits your needs. Streaming music is great, it’s easier than ever to discover new music, to get that new album as soon as it becomes available, or just listen to whatever you want hassle free. You know what isn’t great though? Data overages and charges, those aren’t great at all. Regardless of whether or not you stream daily, a few times a week or just on the weekends, if you do it regularly you’re going to burn through quite a bit of data. That’s where T-Mobile’s Music Freedom comes in.
Putting arguments of net neutrality aside, Music Freedom is a nice offer from T-Mobile that doesn’t count a single byte of data used for streaming music towards your data cap. You can even stream at 4G speeds as well, which is perfect as they’ve just added the Jay-Z owned TIDAL streaming service to the mix, bringing the total number to 31. TIDAL is unique in that it streams lossless quality music, giving the full CD-quality version of millions and millions of tracks. In a previous Android Audio Weekly, we took a close look at the service, and I myself am a big fan.
T-Mobile’s Music Freedom service is great for those tired of downloading an album from Google Play to listen to on the move to save data, and it’s great for big listeners all round. To me, it brings back echoes of the humble radio. After all, your FM radio doesn’t care what you’re listening to or how much you listen to it, so it’s nice to see the same sort of thing being applied to how the majority of us now consume music.
The full list of services now offered by T-Mobile is pretty exhaustive, and it includes Google Play Music, Samsung’s Milk Music, iHeart, Spotify, Slacker, Pandora and a whole lot more. Simply put, if you’re looking for a change, and streaming music is important to you, then T-Mobile is one of the best networks to consider. Hearthstone’s Blackrock Mountain expansion will launch April 2nd
Blizzard has announced that their highly-anticipated expansion pack for popular card game Hearthstone — dubbed Blackrock Mountain — will officially launch April 2nd. The previous launch window given was simply “next month” so we weren’t expecting it so soon after the calendar turns.
Blackrock Mountain will be handled similarly to Hearthstone’s first expansion Curse of Naxxramas. Cards will be released in the form of weekly “wings” where you will face a horde of enemies and bosses to unlock new cards.
There will be 5 wings total, and the new card count sits at a comfortable 31. Each wing costs $6.99, but those who don’t mind parting ways with in-game gold can also buy them for 700g. There’s also the option of preordering the entire lot for $24.99, a move that will net you an exclusive Blackrock-themed card back.
Blackrock Mountain centers around the neverending struggle between Dragons and the other fiery evils that claim the volcano as their home, all the while disturbing the covenant of dwarfs in the taverns throughout. As such, the Dragon card classification will get a vast majority of the attention here as Blizzard looks to add new cards to that pool and create a lot more synergy for those who prefer to play them.

OnePlus Officially Confirm Delay Of OxygenOS And Hint That CM 12S Might Not Be Arriving On Monday As Planned
If you are the proud owner of the OnePlus One then today was supposed to be a good day for you. In spite of CM12 nightlies being available and also an alpha release of the OnePlus homegrown OS, OxygenOS being released. OnePlus One owners have yet to experience a proper, stable and full release of an Android 5.0 (Lollipop) based OS. This was supposed to change today, with OnePlus recently announcing that they would be rolling out OxygenOS today, March 27th. On a slightly side note, the announcement also did state that CM 12S for the OnePlus One will be following on Monday (March 30th).
Well, as today’s date neared and OnePlus One owners were readying themselves for the Oxygen Release, OnePlus yesterday held one of their routine ‘ask me almost anything’ (AMAA) conversations on reddit. In replying to a couple of user questions, it became clear that OnePlus was not expecting OxygenOS to be released today as scheduled. At the time, there was no direct confirmation, but the OnePlus team were strongly hinting that the rollout would miss today’s date. The reason being, awaiting Google certification.
Well, if you were still living in hope that today would bring OxygenOS to your OnePlus One then it looks like the delay has now become an official delay. OnePlus have this morning sent out a forum post detailing that OxygenOS will definitely not be rolling out today as planned. Again, the reason given was waiting on Google Certification. Like yesterday, the OnePlus announcement does state that the OS is up and running and a number of the OnePlus team members are using it as a daily driver. In terms of when, there was no official confirmation provided for a likely delivery date, although the announcement does state OnePlus will provide daily updates on the progress until it is released. These updates will come via the announcement post (source link below). In terms of CM 12S which was due to land on Monday, no direct confirmation was given on this as well. Although, today’s announcement did hint that this also might not be arriving on Monday as scheduled “Together, we’re working to deliver CM12 to you as soon as possible“. OnePlus’s “game-changing” announcement isn’t a games console — it’s a drone, apparently
OnePlus really threw us for a loop. They’ve been teasing a “game-changing” announcement for a couple of weeks now. “Start a new game.” “For the fun of it.” “You’re in control.” They even used a photo of a pair of hands seemingly holding an invisible gaming controller for that last one.
Surely this can be nothing other than a gaming console, right? Wrong — well, wrong according to OnePlus’s Carl Pei, anyway. The company nonchalantly confirmed in an Ask Me Anything session on reddit that they’d be revealing a gaming drone dubbed the DR-1. Carl Pei even posted a convincing branding image for the thing:
But even though this information is coming from the horse’s mouth, we’re going to take this one with a grain of salt for a few different reasons.
- We’re dangerously close to April Fools day.
- We’ve never seen a company tease an announcement and then “leak” their own information.
- It’s OnePlus.
- It’s OnePlus.
Those last couple of points weren’t duplicated in err — this company’s marketing tactics have been questionable since their conception, and we wouldn’t put anything past them. We’re electing to wait until that April-scheduled announcement before we put all our eggs into the “drone” basket, but this is the story they’re dishing out in the interim. You guys believe them?

New HTC One E9+ renders reveal 3 different color variants
Much like the HTC One M9+ will be to the HTC One M9, HTC is apparently planning on making a Plus variant of the HTC One E9. Upleaks revealed new renders of that device today, and gave us a look at three of its expected color variants in the process.
As we’ve seen before, the device will have a plastic-based backplate rather than the full unibody metal design of the M9, though it should still have a fair bit of metal in its chassis. Specs for the base model of the HTC One E9 are rumored to be a 5.5-inch Quad HD display (2560 x 1440), a 20 megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM and a MediaTek chipset, though we aren’t yet sure which areas the two will differ.
HTC is expected to announce one or both of these devices at an upcoming “More Than One” event in Beijing that was recently scheduled. It’s possible we’ll also see the HTC One M9+ debuted at that same event, which is said to come with a slightly bigger display 5.2-inch display, a fingerprint scanner and dual cameras on the rear compared to the HTC One M9’s 5-inch display, lack of a fingerprint scanner and a lone 20 megapixel camera sensor.

YouTube Experimenting with 60 FPS Video at 4K Resolution
We always want more pixels, videos just look so much better with more pixels. But what about smoother videos? Like 60 FPS smooth? Well YouTube already allows 60 FPS playback on the site, but not for all resolutions. However, now YouTube is experimenting with 60FPS Video on YouTube at 4K resolution. Which means ultra high-definition video that’s ultra-smooth. The video geeks are going to love this! Currently, it’s just an experiment, obviously. And it’s limited to a very small batch of clips. That’s not an issue as a lot of videos on YouTube aren’t in 4K, heck most are barely even 1080p. They are closer to 720p. Nevermind the framerate at of what they are shot at. Additionally, cameras that shoot 4K/60FPS are pretty expensive, but not impossible to find. However they are far from the standard right now.
There are some examples down below of YouTube videos shot at 4K and 60 FPS. They look really good. Of course, your computer may not be able to handle them, and if you don’t have a 4K monitor, you’re likely watching in 1080p. Your internet also needs to be able to handle it. As we all know about YouTube’s buffering, this will probably only add to the problem, at least until Google Fiber gets rolled out all around the country. As 4K uses larger files, which means it’ll need faster internet speeds to get the video playing without buffering. On a 100+ mbps connection, you should be fine though. But that also depends on how stable that connection is.
If your computer can’t handle the videos at 4K and 60FPS, don’t be mad, as most computers probably won’t be able to handle it. It does take quite the toll on the processor to play these videos they were meant to be played in. But it is great to see YouTube working on the quality of videos posted on YouTube. Although there are still quite a few 360p videos out there, however, quite a few of those don’t look bad at all. And others are likely from years ago, when 720p and 1080p weren’t the norm.

Surprise: OnePlus One’s Lollipop updates are delayed
OnePlus made a commitment to get CyanogenMod 12S and OxygenOS out to OnePlus One users by the end of this month. They promised that a failure to do so would result in a phone giveaway to show how serious they were to that commitment.
Aaaaannd it looks like they’re giving away phones. OnePlus One held another Ask Me Anything session on the Android subreddit, and when asked about the Lollipop-based upgrades promised they had some unfortunate news to share: they aren’t positive they’ll be ready in time.
OnePlus says they have stable firmware ready to go and things are running as smoothly as they ought to be, but unforeseen delays in the certification process might extend the timeline a bit further than they originally anticipated. As such, they confirmed they will be giving away at least 5 OnePlus One units. That doesn’t sound like a whole lot to part ways with for a manufacturer, but when you have profit margins as slim as OnePlus’s it’s a pretty big deal.
Perhaps more troubling is that they aren’t willing to give us another estimated release date, but perhaps they’ve learned a valuable lesson in all this and have adopted Cyanogen’s old way of thinking: no ETAs on OTAs, and it’ll be ready when it’s ready. OnePlus One says to stay on the lookout for more information in the days to come.

Report: LG To Announce The G4 At The End Of April
Samsung and HTC have already announced their flagship offerings earlier this month as part of MWC, and it’s now LG’s turn. This Korean tech giant wanted to avoid launch conflicts with Samsung, HTC and Apple, and will launch their G4 flagship next month. The Head of Mobile at the company has already said that this handset will be “radically different” than the G3, and that LG will even announce the LG UX 4.0 before they actually announce the G4.
That being said, according to the newest reports from Korea, the LG G4 will be launched at the end of April, though we still don’t have the exact launch date unfortunately. The same sources also said that the phone will ship with a curved QuadHD (2560 x 1440) display which will be 5.X-inches big, which was to be expected actually. The recently leaked G4 renders actually fit this description, though it remains to be seen how legit they are. Some analysts are actually saying that the G4 will give the company an edge over its competitors, and will be a gamechanger for LG. The LG is expecting to sell 10 million G4 units, but according to the analysts, the company might sell over 15 million units this year. As a side note, LG has sold 7 million G3 smartphones since it launch in April last year.
Various rumors have tried to predict the specifications of the LG G4, and we’ll give it a shot based on the info we have thus far. The LG G4 is expected to sport a slightly curved 5.5-5.7-inch QuadHD (2560 x 1440) display along with 3 or 4GB of RAM and multiple storage variants (32GB+). The handset will most likely be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor and will ship with a 16 or 20.7-megapixel OIS camera. The device reportedly won’t offer metal build, but the company’s new G4 Note handset might. These are all rumors at this point, so take it all with a pinch of salt. The launch event for the handset is still approximately a month away, but stay tuned for any further information that might surface before then.

Asus’ ZenFone 2 Handsets To Reach India On April 13th
Asus has surprised any people back at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) back in January, not only because they released a smartphone with 4GB of RAM, but because of its price. Asus has unveiled the company’s new ZenFone 2 line of devices, and the most powerful of them sports 4GB of RAM and costs only around $280 in Taiwan. The company has since launched multiple ZenFone 2 models in China as well, and it seems like Asus’ new devices are on their way to India as well. The newest report claims that this Taiwan-based company will launch multiple ZenFone models in India on April 13th, when they’ll hold an event in that Asian country in order to showcase the device. Asus is sticking to their promise and is releasing these devices in Q2 all over the place, Taiwan and China are done, India will follow soon, and according to the latest information Canada will also follow in April.
The top-of-the-line ZenFone 2 handset features a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display along with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage. Intel’s Atom Z3580 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz is powering on this device. 13-megapixel camera is located on its back, and a 5-megapixel snapper is available on the front. The 32GB variant is priced at around $270 in Taiwan, and the 64GB variant costs $322. This is Asus’ crown jewel as far as smartphones go, at least at the moment. The company has also released a couple more ZenFone 2 handset, which carry somewhat lower specs. The ZenFone 2 (ZE551ML) features 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage and is powered by Intel’s Z3560 quad-core SoC clocked at 1.8GHz. Those are the only differences between the two devices. The two lower-end models come with 720p displays 5 and 5.5-inches in size (ZE550CL and ZE550ML), and sport 16GB of internal storage. Both of them sport 2GB of RAM, Intel’s quad-core chips on the inside and are priced at $158 and $190 in Taiwan, respectively.
All of the device above ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop with Asus’ ZenUI on top of Google’s operating system and 4G LTE connectivity is present and accounted for. It remains to be seen how much will they cost once they reach India, stay tuned.

For the second time in under a year, HTC’s lead designer leaves the company
Whether it’s due to stagnant visions on smartphone design or something as simple as the inevitable motions of life, for one reason or another HTC has yet again lost their lead product designer. Jonah Becker announced his departure from the company today.
Becker was part of One & Co., a design firm that was acquired by HTC about 6 years ago. His business partner Scott Croyle had been the vice president of industrial design since the deal was made back in 2008, and Becker found himself promoted to that position once Croyle vacated it.
So what’s next? HTC has already decided to slot creative director Daniel Hundt into the role and focus on product design for mobile devices. Meanwhile, the lone remaining figurehead from One & Co. — Claude Zellweger — will continue in the role he has played as lead designer for HTC’s connected devices (such as the HTC RE Camera, Vive and Grip).
We can confirm that Jonah Becker has left HTC; he had been with the Company since HTC acquired One & Co over six years ago. We would like to thank Jonah for his work with HTC, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. He has been succeeded by Daniel Hundt, based in our San Francisco design office.
Many will likely jump to conclusions and point to the underwhelming response of the HTC One M9 as the driving force behind this move, but it’s never wise to speculate. It’s important to remember that HTC is going through a very significant shift from the top down, with Cher Wang — co-founder to the Taiwanese company — having been announced as Peter Chou’s successor just a week ago. We imagine many more changes in executive management are on tap, and we’d do well not to overreact.

HTC One E9+ Renders Surface Showing Off The 3 Color Variants Of The Device
HTC One M9 was launched earlier this month during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This will be the company’s main device this year, and they’re hoping it will be a huge success. Very few people could have predicted that the company intends to release a couple of additional high-end devices though. After the One M9 was announced, a ton of leaks started popping up all over the internet. The One M9+, One E9 and One E9+ were mentioned various times. It seems like HTC wants to add some more devices to their One M and One E brands. Basically all of the devices listed here are high-end, and we’re here to talk about the One E9+.
The alleged HTC One E9+ has leaked once again, this time @upleaks has leaked the renders of this device. We’ve already seen the device leak and these renders go hand-in-hand with the previously-surfaced info. The One E9+ resembles One M9 a whole lot, though it has a circular camera on the back, unlike the company’s flagship. That camera actually protrudes a bit on the back. If you take a look at the gallery down below, you’ll notice there are a couple of color options of this device down there: gold-white, gold-gray and black variants.
The One E9+ will reportedly feature a 5.5-inch QuadHD (2560 x 1440) display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. MediaTek’s MT6795 64-bit octa-core processor will power on this handset according to the info we have thus far, and Android 5.0 Lollipop will come pre-installed on this device with HTC’s Sense UI 7 on top of it. 20-megapixel camera is said to be located on the back of this handset, with an LED flash being located below it. 13-megapixel or 4MP UltraPixel camera will be located on the front side of the device, and as you can see in the images, HTC’s stereo BoomSound speakers will be a part of this offering as well. HTC is expected to announce this handset in China in the coming days / weeks, stay tuned for that.
