Google appeals dispute with Oracle to the Supreme Court

google-android-oracle

Google filed a request earlier this week seeking a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that pits the tech giant against another powerhouse in technology, Oracle. The case involves parts of Java that Oracle claims copyright over and believes Google has violated when building the Android operating system. While the dollar figure in dispute, $1 Billion, is sizable, Google is framing the question as key to the ability for tech companies to innovate.

The case originated in 2010 when Oracle sued Google claiming parts of Java were improperly used in Android. This included 37 Java APIs that Google argued could not be copyrighted. At the district court level, a federal judge ruled for Google and said Oracle could claim copyright protection. However, earlier this year an appeals court overturned that ruling.

In their initial filing with the Supreme Court, Google says the Federal Circuit appellate court’s ruling would stifle innovation as computer companies could exert “copyright monopolies over the basic building blocks of computer design and programming.”

Wall Street Journal: Yes, the Nexus 6 is coming this month

black-nexus-6-render

There have been numerous reports suggesting that the so-far-unconfirmed Nexus 6 is on its way soon, including our own exclusive report suggesting the phone will likely be unveiled alongside the Nexus 9 on either October 15th or the 16th. If you’re still skeptical, however, yet another source has chimed in with claims the Nexus 6’ arrival draws near — this time the Wall Street Journal.

According to “three people familiar with the situation” speaking to the WSJ, the 5.9-inch Nexus 6 (aka Shamu) will in fact arrive this month, though they don’t clarify as to the when. Obviously our money is on the 15th or the 16th, only a week away, but we won’t deny that there is a chance this could prove to be the wrong date(s). If the phone really is coming next week, it seems pretty likely it will be through another low-key blog post as opposed to a major event, especially since no invites have gone out just yet.

The Nexus 6's arrival is drawing near, we could see it perhaps as early as next week

The WSJ report doesn’t say a whole lot else about the Nexus 6, other than a few quotes from folks like Ankit Jain, the CEO and founder of mobile start-up Quettra and a former executive at Google Play, who suggests that Google may want to move into the larger phone segment so it doesn’t make the same “mistake Apple made over the last few years by missing out on the demand for larger phones.” Honestly considering the Nexus line has never been about appealing to average consumers and more about providing a great tool for developers and hardcore ‘pure Android’ fans, we doubt that’s Google’s motivation.

So why make a bigger Nexus 6? Unless Google simply wants to see how far it can take the big screen form factor before they reach full tablet size, we imagine they have at least a few unique features in store that will showcase how ‘pure’ Android can provide a solid phablet experience, or at least that’s the hope. There have been whispers about the possibility of a multi-screen function coming to the final release of Android L, and while there haven’t been a whole lot of solid leaks to suggest this will happen — it’d be interesting if it did.

Excited for the Nexus 6 yet? Conversely, do you think Google should continue offering the current Nexus 5 alongside the monster Nexus for those interested in a smaller device?

HTC ‘Eye Experience’ Update Already Hitting European HTC One M8 Devices

HTC Logo

Today may have been Sony’s day to launch their newbie devices, but yesterday certainly was HTC’s. The Taiwanese company hosted their Double Exposure event in New York and released a number of products and features that were selfie orientated. The big announcements (which were both expected) was the HTC Desire Eye and the new and surreal HTC RE camera. Both devices were firmly camera focused as was the event as a whole. In addition to the hardware HTC also announced the release of their ‘Eye Experience’. In short this is a new software suite being touted by HTC with some particularly interesting features. The most notable feature is the ability to take automatic selfies. This includes various abilities to make the selfie process easier such as composing the image and letting the camera automatically take the image and also the ability to voice command the phone to take the image. Another major feature of the Eye Experience is the ability to double take i.e. the ability to take a front and rear camera picture at the same time.

In addition to the actual software HTC also announced yesterday that they would make available the Eye Experience software to other HTC devices and in particular as much of the One series as possible. Now although the event and announcement were only yesterday, reports are already emerging that European M8 owners are starting to receive the software update OTA. The update is being noted as an Android 4.4.4 push with build version 3.28.401.6.

If you do own an international version and have yet to see the update (and simply cannot wait) then it does seem the update is already available via the super-fast guys over at XDA. The update is listed as 252MB in size, if you decide to go down the route of sideloading then it is assumed you know the risks and also what to do. To get the download and read the instructions follow the link over to the XDA update thread. If however, you are not so well equipped in sideloading then don’t worry it does seem the software is heading your way so be patient and wait for the OTA. If you have already received the update then let us know what you think and what the new features are like? Jealous! Me! Yep!

HTC One M8 already receiving Android 4.4.4 update with EYE Experience in Europe

htc-desire-eye-experience-face-tracking

During yesterday’s Double Exposure event, HTC talked in great detail about their all new EYE Experience, their brand new updated camera app that will come with the HTC Desire EYE. During the event, they also mentioned their current flagship devices — like the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 — would soon see a system update bringing these futures later this month.

HTC EYE Experience

Not much time has passed since then, but it seems the update is already making the rounds in Europe for the international version of the device. The update (software build 3.28.401.6) weighs in at 252.01MB and officially brings the firmware on the HTC One M8 to Android 4.4.4. For those willing, you can manually install the update where it’s already been posted to XDA . For rooted users, both LlabTooFeR and Mike1986 are supplying their versions of the update via their own custom ROMs.

As is usually the case, we expect the HTC One M8 Developer Edition to receive the update next, followed by carrier versions here in the US. Let’s hope since not much has changed, it doesn’t get held up by a lengthy review process.

DROID TURBO may have 3,900mAh battery

motorola_droid_turbo_battery_image

A new leak about the upcoming Motorola DROID TURBO for Verizon indicates the battery will be a massive 3,900mAh unit. This should provide plenty of battery life for the DROID TURBO. Last year’s DROID MAXX had a 3,500mAh battery and was one of the larger batteries on the market. Combined with a possible QHD display and 3GB of RAM, the DROID TURBO could find itself competing at the high end of the market.

The image came courtesy the TaoBao web site, an online retailer in China and was posted by Twitter user @owen199208211. The model number of the battery in the image is EQ40 which is the same model number listed in an FCC database entry filed earlier.

As with leaked information from unusual and only vaguely identified sources, the big question is whether the image is a fake or not. Hopefully we will know the answer before the end of the month as some think Verizon is ready to release the new DROID TURBO the last week of October.

Nexus 6 is reportedly launching this month according to sources

Nexus 5 unboxing featured

If last year’s sudden Nexus 5 launch wasn’t a big enough clue for you, we’d say we’re not too far off from Google announcing a followup sometime this month as well. They didn’t give a specific date, but according to 3 sources out of The Wall Street Journal , Google is planning just that, with the Nexus 6 — Google’s new phablet — being made official any day now.

Running with Google’s recent naming scheme, the Nexus 6 is fixin’ to be an exceptionally large smartphone that will help Google compete in the phablet market, one currently dominated by the likes of Samsung and soon, Apple (if they can keep up with demand). There was no mention of pricing, but it’s interesting that recent Nexus 6 leaks show a phone identical to Motorola’s Moto X (2nd Gen), only larger and with the Nexus name on the back. Typically, Google contracts an OEM to build an entirely separate model (usually with cheaper parts to help keep costs down). It’ll be interesting to see if any corners were cut and if not, what the unlocked pricing will look like.

Apple is planning an October 16th event and with rumors of Google also announcing a Nexus 9 tablet along with the Nexus 6, it would make sense for Google to try and get a jump on Apple by announcing their new product portfolio a day before (or the day of?) the event. But that date is closing in fast and without hide or hair of any invites being sent out to press, expect another lowkey blog post for the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 like Google did with last year’s Nexus 5.

BrainWave Lets You Control Your Favorite Android Music App With Hand Gestures (Not Brainwaves)

unnamed (7) Sometimes you've just got to sit back and marvel at the ingenuity of some Android developers. While Motorola was busy putting expensive infrared sensors all over the front of the new Moto X to enable a few gesture controls, developer OnTheGo Platforms was adding it in with something that just about every smartphone already has. Behold, BrainWave, an app that lets you play, pause, and navigate your music like a frickin' Jedi.

VivaLnk Launch Their New Digital Tattoos Compatible With All NFC Devices

eSkin_tattoo

Do you remember some time back Motorola teamed up with VivaLnk offering Digital Tattoos? If you don’t then yes Motorola and VivaLnk did indeed team up offering what they were calling Digital tattoos. In short these tattoos were thin pieces of plastic that you would stick to your arm. Once you were wearing the tattoo, it could be used for easy unlocking of your Motorola Moto X instead of the typical pattern or pin. Wearers could simply touch their Moto X with their new tattoo and the phone would unlock. The wonders of NFC! It is not clear how popular the tattoos were and there were issues as to whether they were a bit gimmicky. For instance, they had no longevity in terms of usage with each tattoo lasting at most five days before becoming unwearable. As such if you were planning on using these as a permanent solution then it would likely get quite pricey with each tattoo costing roughly $1. So after the initial reports I personally did not hear too much about them. Then again not a Moto X owner so maybe just was not listening so much.

Fast forward and starting to get a feeling of Déjà Vu. It seems the Digital Tattoo revolution is back and this time it’s looking to take on the whole of the Android world. Yes folks, VivaLnk (Motorola’s collaborators the first time around) are back with their latest incarnation, the eSkin Tattoos. Now to be clear these seem identical to Motorola’s. However unlike the Motorola’s these are designed to work with any Android device with NFC capabilities. So now everyone can stick a piece of plastic on their arm and avoid the arduous task of drawing a pattern or entering a four digit code. Again like the original Motorola’s ones these are temporary solutions and are expected to last roughly a week before they come off. Again these are waterproof so no worries for our California and Australian readers. You can surf and NFC to your heart’s content.

If unlike me, you do suffer with tattoo envy and simply need eSkins, then like the Motorola offerings they are available in a packs of 10. For the pack the cost is $11.99 and they can be purchased directly from VivaLnk or of course by clicking here. International readers, sorry guys it seems VivaLnk are only shipping to the US at present although that may change in the future.

Droid Turbo battery reportedly spotted, packing a massive 3900 mAh

droid-turbo

Yesterday the Motorola Droid Turbo’s user manual leaked to the web, confirming some of the things we already knew about the device, such as its QHD 5.2-inch display and its support for quick-charging tech. The manual also mentioned a long-lasting battery but didn’t seem to share any specifics. Thankfully a new leak out of China gives us a first look at what may be the Turbo’s battery, and it seems to pack a massive 3,900 mAh.

droid-turbo-battery

We can’t say for sure that this is really the Droid Turbo’s battery, but it is listed as model number EQ40, the same model number mentioned for the battery in its FCC listing. Even with a Snapdragon 805 processor and QHD display, the Droid Turbo likely packs a pretty impressive punch when it comes to battery life, though obviously we can’t say exactly how good it will be. It often comes down to a combination of specs and software optimization.

What do you think, excited to get your hands on the Droid Turbo? For those who picked up the new Moto X (especially on Verizon’s network), do you regret your decision or happy with your purchase nonetheless?

Motorola Droid Turbo will come equipped with a massive 3,900mAh battery

Motorola EQ40 Droid Turbo battery

Earlier this week, a mysterious Motorola device tried to sneakily make its way past the FCC undetected. While initially thought to be the Motorola Nexus 6, its reported size hinted more towards the rumored (now leaked) Motorola Droid Turbo. Inside the FCC filing we found the typical tests and paperwork, but there was also mention of an accessory list which, in addition to revealing the device coming with Motorola’s Turbo Charger, listed the part number for the device’s battery (EQ40).

As many of you saw, yesterday, the Motorola Droid Turbo was finally exposed thanks to its leaked user manual, giving us an early look at its relatively uninspired 2010 design. While the user manual was a great resource for us, it didn’t actual specify the exact battery capacity, only saying it would have a “high capacity long lasting battery.”

Fast forward to today where a resourceful young man tweeted out a battery for the Motorola Droid Turbo on a Chinese parts website — the same EQ40 model number from the FCC filing — and you wont believe its reported size: 3,900mAh. Sweet, Jehoshaphat.

While a higher resolution 2K display is sure to take a toll on battery life, we were confident the Droid Turbo would, at the very minimum, match the 3,500mAh battery of last year’s Motorola Droid Maxx. Maybe a 200mAh more — tops. But this? This is madness. Just as a quick comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a nice sized 2,800mAh battery, topped by the Sony Xperia Z3 at 3,100mAh.

With Project Volta arriving with Android L and the Motorola Droid Turbo likely one of the first devices to receive it (if it not launch with Android L), expect a phone that could outlive any other. How’s that for a killer feature?

Lenovo Announces Three New Yoga Tablets In 8, 10, And 13-Inch Versions, Including One With A Built-In Pico Projector

pico Lenovo's kickstand-packing Yoga tablets are already unconventional, but the new Tablet 2 Pro is downright odd. In addition to a relatively huge 13.3" screen and a built-in subwoofer, this beast of a device packs a pint-sized Pico projector into the curve of its kickstand hinge. Lenovo claims that the Tablet 2 Pro was developed with "product engineer" Ashton Kutcher, in case it wasn't already weird enough. The redesigned kickstand also includes a cutout the pulls double duty as a hole for the camera and a handy hanging point.

Android Wear Could Get Volume Controls, NFC Support Soon

Android Wear Faces _1

Android Wear is good, but it’s about to get great. It’s going to get a huge update when Android L is released. The two operating systems will work hand-in-hand to provide even more functionality than what we currently have available to us. Android Police did a tear down of the most recent Android Wear companion app and uncovered some interesting tidbits about what we could see when the next major update is released. What they found was previews for watch faces and notification sizes, volume adjustment for audio playback, NFC support, location services, Google Fit, and a whole bunch more.

The volume controls are pretty straight forward. We already know that Google is bringing offline music support to Wear because they have already announced it. But the remote volume controls will give you even more control over that music playback experience. Android Wear devices can already skip tracks and play/pause music, but soon they will be able to adjust volume levels too. There’s some location services tweaking that will happen as well, with more fine-tuning of GPS controls on Wear devices.

There aren’t any Android Wear smartwatches that have NFC right now, but that doesn’t mean Google isn’t preparing for it. The code in the new app shows NFC support that would make it easy to pair your smartphone with your NFC-capable watch, and maybe even support for mobile payments. How cool would it be to use contactless payments with just your watch! There’s also code in the app for personal unlock using proximity-based unlocking, which Google has already announced. This would allow your phone to remain unlocked as long as it’s near your Wear smartwatch, but lock itself as soon as it’s out of the proximity of your watch, and presumably your wrist. There’s a bunch more stuff that Android Police uncovered. You should hit the source link and read up on what they have found. With all of the awesome new features coming to Android Wear, I’m really excited about what’s coming in the next few months.

Here’s The Sony Xperia Z3v For Verizon Wireless: Image Gallery

Sony Xperia Z3V AH-4

Sony announced their Xperia Z3v model of the Xperia Z3 today at the Demand Great event held in New York, a device meant for the shelves of Verizon Wireless retail stores later this Fall. October 23rd to be exact, and at a price of $199 on a 2-year contract. The phone is largely the same as the regular model of the Sony Xperia Z3 that we saw shown off last month, save for a couple key details. The Verizon logo is of course stamped on it in a couple of places. Besides that though the Xperia Z3v will also come with a 3200mAh battery compared to the 3100mAh capacity in the original model, and it has embedded wireless charging. Something we’d have like to see on the Xperia Z3 but it isn’t the end of the world.

Other than that the Xperia Z3v is the same device. It carries the same camera and processor as the original, and has all the same features and functions like PS4 Remote Play, Xperia themes, and 4K video recording. Our own Alex Maxham is hands on at the event and was able to grab a bunch of pictures for us of both the black and white models of the Xperia Z3v, even some showing the PS4 Remote Play in action. How about that? Any Verizon Wireless Subscribers excited to pick up this phone? Check out the image gallery below and see what you think.
