Android 5.1.1 Factory Images Available for Nexus 9 LTE and Nexus 5

Google posted Android 5.1.1 factory images today for the Nexus 9 LTE (LMY47X) and Nexus 5 (LMY48B), leaving the Nexus 7 (2013) LTE, Nexus 7 (2012) mobile, Nexus 4, and Nexus 6 as the only current Nexus devices without them. I would imagine they will be here before long. Once they do show up, we’ll be sure to share them.

Google Just Introduced $40 Special Edition Skrillex Cases as Part of New “Editions” Case Program, Confirms World is Doomed by Naming One “Bae”

Google, randomly, just introduced a new program called “Editions” to the Google Store that is a series of creative collaborations with influencers. The collaborations are turning out special cases, like this first one which was made in partnership with Skrillex, king of the wub.

For this first Edition, we get three choices of Skrillex themed cases that are available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy Note 4. The cases start at a whopping $40 and are obnoxiously titled Circuit Bae, Lil Planet, and Space Shield. Seriously, I didn’t just make those up. Google actually allowed a case to be called “bae.” Someone please just end the world now, this planet doesn’t deserve this level of low.

Along with the case, you get a companion app with live wallpaper that updates throughout the day by showing you Earth shots from the stratosphere. Of course, it changes at night to show you constellations from your current location. You also get “VIP access” to Skrillex content, like a free OWSLA album and Skrillex updates sent directly to your phone. Google even put a shortcut button on the case that gives you direct access to his YouTube channel. In case you don’t want that kind of Skrillex action built into your case, you can customize the button to launch apps or even Skrillex’s website! My lord…this just keeps getting weirder.

So um, yeah, the cases are available now. They are $40.

Verizon’s LG G Pad 8.3 LTE Gets Lollipop Today

The LG G Pad 8.3 LTE on Verizon is the newest device to receive an update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. The update will rollout as version VK81035A, for those keeping track.

After the update, device owners will get a lot of the fun that Google introduced with this new version of Android, including new navigation buttons, lock screen notifications, Smart Lock (trusted Bluetooth devices, locations, etc.), search in the Settings panel, floating action buttons galore, screen pinning of apps, and multi-user accounts.

It’s a big update, so make sure you have plenty of battery before attempting to install.

ASUS ZenFone 2 Unboxing and First Look!

Even though I’m still fully in love with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and hate to put its pretty glass body down on a table for more than a few minutes because I always need to be touching it, something about this newish trend of super cheap phones with decent specs has finally caught my attention. I feel like I need to invest some portion of my life into the bargain bin to see if life can continue without a hiccup. Or maybe it’s that there is too much value to be had out there for me not to experience it.

And with that random thought, enter the ASUS ZenFone 2 into my pocket. Yes, we have one in house!

This is by all means a phone with a bargain bin price and close-to-premium specs. At $199 and $299 (we went with this model), you really can’t beat the value here, which is a package that includes a 5.5-inch HD display, quad-core Intel processor, 4GB RAM, 13MP camera, 64GB storage, Android 5.0, fast charging, and LTE connectivity.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll spend some quality time with this phone to see what it is truly made of. Can a phone with this low of a price and this set of specs win me over on any level? I really want to find out, I really do. This type of phone is more than likely going to be a major part of the future of smartphones, so why not familiarize ourselves with it now.

To get the journey started, here is an unboxing and initial impressions video.

Motorola Updates Camera App in Google Play to Include Manual Exposure Setting

An update is rolling out to the Motorola Camera app in Google Play, bringing a few bug fixes, but more importantly, a setting to allow users to adjust exposure levels.

Once updated, owners can tweak with the exposure setting, which will lead to either darker shots or brighter shots, depending on which values you select. To use, the camera must be in tap-to-focus mode, then you can slide a ring to adjust the exposure level.

All you Moto device owners, go check it out.

Google Play Has Some Great HD Movies on Sale for Under $10

A “Blockbuster Sale” is currently going on in Google Play, where you can buy a few sweet flicks in HD for $10 or under. A few of the big titles that pop out to me are Terminator 2: Judgement Day for $7, Hurt Locker for $7, Gladiator for $10, and 3:10 to Yuma for $7.

There are a ton more movies than the ones I listed above, so if you want to broaden your digital movie library, while saving a few bucks, check it out.

As a note, Google has Godzilla listed for this sale, but the HD price is still set at $19.99, while the SD version is $7. I’m assuming this is a mistake, and they will soon fix this error.

Android 5.1.1 OTA Files Now Available for Nexus 4 and Nexus 9 LTE

Update May 20:  Nexus 4 and Nexus 9 LTE Android 5.1.1 OTA .zips added.

Now that Android 5.1.1 factory images have been posted for a number of Nexus devices, we are starting to see the rollout of over-the-air (OTA) updates to them, namely the Nexus 7 (2012) and (2013), Nexus 10, and Nexus Player. More will arrive soon (Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 4, and Nexus 9), so we are starting to compile a list of them all below. We know that many of you like to sideload updates rather than wait for them to hit your device – feel free to bookmark this one.

As we continue to receive new file URLs that are direct downloads from Google, we will continue to update this post.

Download Android 5.1.1 OTA .zips:

*Note – In order to flash a .zip file in adb, be sure to match up the build number on the file to your current or the update will fail. For example, look at the new build number in brackets followed by the build number that it’s coming “from.” In your Settings>About screen, you will want to match up to the “from” build number.

For instructions to sideload using adb, check here. For instructions on how to grab an OTA file, check here.

Verizon Test Engineer Says DROID Turbo Gets Lollipop in “Mid June,” Opens Up About Update Process, Hints at New Moto X

“Mid June.” That’s the current target for the DROID Turbo to receive its Lollipop update, at least according to a Verizon device test engineer. The Big Red employee opened up on Google+ yesterday with an image of his own Turbo running Android 5.1, which is the version of Android expected to make its way to the current Verizon DROID flagship. He didn’t just stop there, though. In fact, Jose Arturo, the Verizon engineer, talked about the reasons for the slowness, bugs they are currently working on, and where Motorola ranks when compared to Samsung and Apple in device verifications. He also tossed in news about potential features in upcoming Motorola phones that should excite many of you.

Arturo, in response to a number of people commenting about his Turbo update news, mentioned that the delays we are seeing in the latest smartphones are largely due to Verizon’s nationwide HD Voice, VoLTE, and their use of band 4 LTE. Because Verizon wants to make sure that their HD Voice service is “acceptable and does not impact voice quality,” things seem to be taking longer than usual. They are continually dealing with the tricky transition between their 3G and LTE networks, adding patches from Qualcomm to help improve this, and also make sure phones are working properly on XLTE, which is band 4 LTE.

The slow rollout of the update also may be due to the fact that Motorola is “small potatoes on budget” when compared to competitors, like Samsung or Apple. According to Arturo, delays in software updates are often times the result of “(lack of) funding for test verifications.” If that’s really the case, the ever-shrinking staff of Motorola and their transition to being a Lenovo company might indeed be the reason Motorola seems to be slower than ever with updates after a couple of years of being the fastest.

On a related note, in a post from Arturo from April, we may now know a couple of new features that Motorola is working on for its next Moto X. Randomly, this Verizon device test engineer mentioned in an Android community that Motorola is “bring front facing flash for selfies” and also plans to start including microSD slots again. I can’t say that I ever asked for a company to include a front flash for selfie-hour, but we are always going to be fans of microSD slots, especially now that Samsung is moving away from them.

Arturo said to expect these features to arrive this summer.

Well, then.

Sunrise Adds Wunderlist Integration

Sunrise, the multi-platform calendar app that we are quite fond of around here, received a new integration today for the to-do listers in the building. The Microsoft-owned app added Wunderlist integration to its Android, iOS, and desktop apps, giving you an easier way to not only keep track of your daily calendars and schedule, but also the tasks you need to get done.

All you need to do to add Wunderlist into your Sunrise calendar is head into settings and “Add Account.” You should see Wunderlist at the bottom of the list as an available add. Once added, all of your Wunderlist tasks that have due dates will now show up in Sunrise as all-day events.

Sunrise offered these tips to get the most out of this new integration:

  • Create tasks directly in Sunrise. Just create a new event and choose one of your Wunderlist lists as the calendar. As soon as the event is created in Sunrise, the task will also appear in Wunderlist.
  • Change due dates of your Wunderlist tasks by simply dragging and dropping them from one day to another in Sunrise.
  • Write a task as done in Wunderlist, a checkmark will automatically appear in Sunrise right next to it. Did we already mention we really liked checking tasks off to-do lists?

I do not believe an update is required in order to access Wunderlist through Sunrise. Either way, we have Google Play links below to get both apps if you aren’t already using them.
