Over the years, we’ve seen wireless charging technology make big strides when it comes to mobile adoption. Still, for Android users looking to cut the power cord out completely from their lives, they’re still faced with some pretty big trade-offs. The biggest issue being speed, which sees current wireless chargers peaking at around 5W. In comparison, newer Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 compatible USB chargers top out at around 15W.
Take into account Android flagships being outfitted with bigger, badder batteries and you’re looking wireless charging that could potentially take all day (or at least a good chunk of it) before being topped off. It’s these reasons many feel wireless charging isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. But not so fast…
Today, a company called Freescale announced a new wireless charging solution that can deliver 15 watts of total output. That’s like a wireless Motorola Turbo Charger. With reference designs due out by Q1 of 2015, Freescale will still need to catch the eye of big name OEMs before we see this tech in the next Galaxy Tab. The good news? Freescale’s says their wireless charging tech is compliant with both Qi and Power Matters Alliance, so you wont have to worry about incompatibility.
Hopefully we hear more about this technology as both the WPR1516 receiver chip and WCT1012 transmitter chip become available next year.
Wireless charging is slowly becoming a standard for smartphones (even if an actual standard cannot be decided). Tablet, on the other hand, have received very little attention when it comes to wireless charging. Hardware just do not seem to care about the feature for tablets. The primary reason for that is because the current technology would have a tablet charging at an extremely slow pace. Freescale, a company that his its roots with Motorola, is developing a solution that would bring wireless charging to tablets.
The company is working on a 15-watt wireless charging system. The wireless charging system Freescale is developing charges tablets with three times that wattage of a smartphone’s wireless charging system. Tablets are not the only focus, however. Freescale says everything from power tools to medicals devices are also supported.
So, what standard is Freescale basing its wireless charging solution on? The Qi wireless charging standard. But do not groan just yet because Freescale claims that it does also work with the wireless charging standards from the Wireless Power Consortium and the Power Matters Alliance.

Avid readers on Android have some exciting new toys to look forward to in the latest version of Amazon Kindle. Update 4.8 adds some significant features to an already-packed app, specifically linked to in-book search. "X-Ray" is a proprietary system that downloads a pre-configured, collated file that includes information about the book itself, the characters, the setting, and the context of basically everything. For complex fiction, non-fiction, or textbooks, it's an amazing system previously reserved for the Kindle e-readers and tablets.

It's been a long and winding road to find the truth behind the recent announcement that Cyanogen Inc. had signed an exclusive deal with Micromax in India. OnePlus made waves when it said that meant there would be no CM updates for the OnePlus One sold in India, but Cyanogen Inc. made a blog post saying all global devices would get updates, and all was well. Except it isn't. A new post on the Cyanogen blog expands on the situation.

Ever since picking up a full time job to help support my gaming habit (which, ironically, gave me less to time to actually play video games), there are few games I regret never having the opportunity to play through entirely more than Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath for the OG Xbox.
Released back in 2005, Stranger’s Wrath was a breath of fresh air from the cookie cutter WWII first-person shooters that crowded the market. A brilliant spaghetti western set in the far reaches of outer space, even today you’ll be hard pressed to find a game dripping with more personality than Stranger’s Wrath.
Players take control of Stranger, a bounty hunter who must track down and capture outlaws (dead or alive) in return for their generous bounties. The game allows players to jump between first-person and 3rd person viewpoints — 3rd person for traversing the land/platforming, and first-person for more precise aiming/shooting. Speaking of shooting, Stranger utilizes a “live ammunition” system in that the ammo is actually a variety of otherworldly bugs and critters. Two different types of ammo can be equipped at a single time, allowing players to come up with their favorite mix for taking down baddies.
The game has been lauded by countless critics during its initial release and more recently, an HD remake was released for the PS3 in 2011. Today, the Android army can now finally take part in one of the best first-person shooters to come along since ever, with Stranger’s Wrath now officially available on Google Play for $6. That’s not bad, considering its console counterparts are priced at $15.
Like a PC game, the developer is providing a list of minimum requirements with additional performance settings available inside the app. For those looking for gamepad support, good news. Stranger’s Wrath offers “complete” dual-analog controller support and even includes specific control layouts for NVIDIA Shield, Moga, XBOX 360, PS3/PS4, and more. Download link provided below.
Samsung enjoys a ton of success with devices featuring displays larger than 5 inches. In fact, the company is probably credited with making such devices normal. The original Galaxy Note was introduced in 2011 with a 5.3-inch display. Now, there are many devices matching or even besting that size. Everything just keeps getting bigger. The Galaxy Note 4, which was released in October, shipped with a 5.7-inch display. There has yet to be any viable threat to the Galaxy Note series, but LG seems to have something to say about that.
A trademark surfacing recently reveals that LG registered the ‘G Pen’ name. The document representing the trademark does not give away any details. And the application of the G Pen is unknown at this time. It could be used for the upcoming G4 handset, but that is a long shot. Earlier this year, the company introduced the G3 Stylus but it was met with little reaction. Perhaps LG will pack its G Pen into a flagship handset to be a differentiator; however, it could be used as the selling point for an entirely new series that will (apparently) rival the Galaxy Note.
If LG developed its own device with a 5.7-inch display and a stylus, would you be interested? Let us know in the comments.

Another carrier in the United States has the Nexus 6 available to its customers. The latest Nexus phone arrived online today on U.S. Cellular’s website. The regional carrier, sitting at fifth largest in the United States, has each and every color and storage option. With a two-year contract, the base 32GB model is $199. The price for the 64GB, contract included, is $249. The same devices without any contract go for more than $650 and $700, respectively.

Have an Android 5.0 device and a Chromebook? If so, you can make the two work together seamlessly. A new feature called Smart Lock allows Lollipop devices to unlock a Chromebook when nearby. Smart Lock forgoes the lockscreen in favor of this wireless sign-in method. Only the account connected to both the Lollipop device and Chromebook activates the feature. And, at this time, Smart Lock is not available directly to all Chrome OS users.
Hit the break for directions, but remember that Smart Lock is recommended only for experienced Chrome OS Dev Channel users. Testing items within the Dev Channel can potentially harm the system.
