Motorola Begins Selling Individual Bands For The Moto 360 In Both Metal And Leather Options

Moto 360 Individual Bands

The day all of us Moto 360 owners have been waiting for is finally here. At least, that’s how I’m envisioning this feeling for myself and all other Moto 360 owners. I’ll admit some of you could feel differently. So what’s the big news? Motorola is now officially selling the individual leather and metal bands for the Moto 360 smartwatch running on the Android Wear operating system. Prior to now you could get any combination of color case for the watch with a band that came with it. The issue is that certain bands only came with certain cases. Like the Black case and the Black leather band or the black metal band, for example.

Now you can actually mix and match what you want for the watch band, so if you previously bought the silver case with cognac(brown) leather band but now you really feel you’d like a silver metal one for those times when you need something that looks a little classier, the options are there. Each individual leather band will cost you $29.99, and the metal bands will cost you a total of $79.99. We already knew these prices of course because they were announced quite a while ago, it has just taken a while for them to become available for purchase.

The metal bands will be available in two separate finishes, a light finish and a dark finish, which are basically black and silver. The leather bands will be available in three colors, Black, Stone, and Cognac(brown). Sadly there is no option for the Gray leather band, nor is their any option to individually buy the gold metal band or any finishes of the slim 18mm bands. For now at least. The metal bands are made from solid stainless steel and they actually look quite nice, and the leather bands of course are made from Horween Leather. There will likely be more available options in the future, so we hope, it will probably just be a matter of time before we see them pop up. For now you can also only order these straight from Motorola’s website. You can find the link to the metal bands here, and the link for the leather bands is in the source down below.

More Than Half Of Shoppers Thinking About Two Connected Devices Accoding To Verizon

Verizon-Logo-AH-2

All the carriers and manufacturers will be hoping to score big this weekend. With Both Black Friday and Cyber Monday approaching, the game is on and deals are to be had. To prepare for the big occasion it seems Verizon have been doing their homework. Using a survey conducted with the Verizon FiOS Innovation Index, they have come up with some interesting facts. According to the survey, Verizon state that between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a significant time for the purchase of connected devices. The biggest claim is that 52% of consumers will anticipate purchasing “two or more connected devices” this year. That’s over half the shopping public. And remember, this is in reference to purchasing TWO devices. It would be interesting to know what the percentage would be for at least one device. However, this was not given.

Another interesting factor is the sale period will not be solely for gift shipping. According to the survey, at least 37% of consumers will be purchasing items for themselves. Maybe this is where the 52% of two devices comes into play. Quite a lot of consumers who are maybe thinking about picking up a connected device for someone else might also be thinking about one for themselves. The survey also suggests that tablets will be a big seller this year and are listed as the ‘expected’ top product. As a result, you can probably expect a number of tablets to be on offer during the sale holiday. Following on from this, the survey also goes on to suggest that Laptops, TVs and smartphones will also be big hitters for this weekend. A real interesting factor was the survey highlighted the difference in ‘sought after’ between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For instance, the results of the survey than 20% indicating they might be going for a tablet while PC’s scored 18% and TV’s 15%. In contrast on Cyber Monday, the response to the survey for Laptops drops from 18% to 16%. Tablets remained at 20% while the combined total for TV’s and smartphones equaled 15% (the same for TV’s alone on Black Friday).

Overall though one figure which is probably more predictable than the rest is that 63% of respondents said that the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend was the best time of the year to grab a deal. It would be interesting to know what the other 37% of respondents thought was a better time of the year? You can see the published results of the survey by clicking here. So whats on your agenda this Black Friday/Cyber Monday? What will you be hunting for? If you are out of ideas then you might want to check-out our AH Deal Shop which has just opened. You never know what you might find.

Samsung And Oculus To Continue Working Relationship And Launch More Products Like Gear VR

samsung_gear_vr

Now that the Gear VR, Samsung’s virtual reality headset for its line of Galaxy based smartphones, is out in the open and will be offered at a varied selection of retailers, most people are probably already aware that Samsung worked the company Oculus to manufacture the Virtual Reality tech inside of the headset. As part of that deal Samsung would reportedly provide the screen tech for Oculus. It appears that Samsung and Oculus already have more plans to work with each other in the future for other products. The plan is to release more virtual reality products like Gear VR although no mentions were made as to exactly what they had in mind or if they have anything else in the works at this time.

We imagine for those that have already tried the Gear VR and use a compatible device, this is probably exciting news to learn, heck, even I can get behind the idea a little bit and I don’t personally own a device that’s compatible with the Gear VR. What’s to say that future devices between these two companies won’t have a more open approach though? And that’s a thought to be a little excited about if you currently run an incompatible device to the Gear VR headset. Even though we don’t know what Oculus and Samsung will work together to produce next, Oculus CEO did mention that they would continue to work closely with Samsung for future products, which they feel will be successful after they successfully launched the Gear VR this year.

The Samsung Gear VR was announced at IFA 2014 in Berlin, where Samsung also announced the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge devices. For some the phones were the stars of the show, but the Gear VR was easily the standout device as there really isn’t a whole lot of VR based product like Oculus Rift or Gear VR out there. Although not really the same experience as you’ll be able to have with the Gear VR, Google’s Cardboard device is an inexpensive model that displays just what you can do with virtual reality. If you have never given Cardboard a try, it will at least give you a good idea with what Gear VR is capable of.

Twitter Wants To Know What Apps You Have Installed

AH Twitter 1.1

If you’re an avid twitter user, you will know that twitter wants your experience tailored to you. For example, the trending topics section of twitter can be adjusted from nearby locations, to tailored trends. Even the ads that twitter displays on your timeline are tailored. Everything about twitter is personal and twitter plans on making this “tailored experience” even better by tracking your apps. Now this may sound a little nosey of them to do so and also an invasion of privacy, but twitter does not plan on collecting information inside of the apps you use. According to twitter, this new feature is called App Graph, and with this new addition they want to create a list of apps that you have installed on your device. By doing this, twitter can better display ads, make improvements to there “who to follow” suggestions, and show more relevant promoted content.

Why is twitter doing all of this other than trying to make the experience more personal to you? Well its simple, to make more money. Tons of websites rely on ads to build revenue. Some sites do it better than others and in twitters case, they are doing it way better. Instead of just showing you random ads that you have no interest in, they want to show you stuff that you have like and enjoy. Now instead of being irritated of seeing ads that you have no interest in such as toms bug repellent, you will now be shown stuff that you enjoy like Android or Hello Kitty. Okay, those may be poor examples but the point is, you’re going to be less reluctant to exit twitter because of annoying “Who To Follow” suggestions and ads that don’t mean a hill of beans to you.

Now if you are one of those people that wish for twitter to not collect a list of apps on your device, you have the option to opt out. In the next update for twitter you will be prompted to choose whether or not you want twitter to track your apps. If you miss that, you can always click on the overflow icon, go to your settings, tap on the account you want to adjust, and under the other tab, you can adjust the settings to Tailor Twitter based on my apps. With this option you’re not tied down to twitter knowing what you have on your phone.

Hugo Barra Reveals Some Exciting Things Xiaomi Will Be Bringing

Hugo Barra Recently, thenextweb got the opportunity to interview ex-Googler Hugo Barra to talk about the future of Xiaomi. During the interview Hugo Barra revealed some pretty exciting stuff that Xiaomi will be doing in the near future, and yes it involves Android Lollipop. Hugo revealed that the Mi line of devices will be receiving an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop in the first quarter of 2015, shortly after, the Redmi line of devices will also be receiving an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. But perhaps the exciting thing that Hugo revealed in the interview is that Xiaomi has hopes of launching an Android One device.

Hugo Barra said in the interview that he, as well as Xiaomi, are “huge fans of Android One” and that they want to be part of the initiative. Hugo then continued to say that, as of now, it was just a matter of timing and other details when it comes to Android One. On a similar note, Hugo said that 4G is going to become part of what Xiaomi does in India and that they want to be “all-in” with 4G in India. This makes it sound like Xiaomi definitely has some big plans for the Indian market and plans of bringing Android One smartphones there as soon as it is possible for them to do so.

As for the Android Lollipop updates to Xiaomi phones, Hugo said in the interview that upgrading to Lollipop is his “#1 priority from a product perspective.” He then moves on to talk about how, despite the difficulty of bringing Android Lollipop to Xiaomi’s heavily skinned UI, that getting Lollipop onto their devices is still top priority at the moment. Then, like we mentioned above, Hugo reveals that consumers can expect MIUI 6 along with Android 5.0 on the Mi line of devices as well as the Redmi line of devices soon. The Mi line is expected to get the update before the end of the first quarter and the Redmi line should get the update soon after but no exact timeline is available yet. There’s no doubt that this interview with former Googler Hugo Barra was packed with come exciting stuff that the company will be partaking in. It’s really great to hear that companies like Xiaomi are rising up and becoming bigger and bigger players in the smartphone market that give market leaders like Samsung a run for their money. What do you think of all of this? Let us know in the comments section below.

C Spire Wireless Introduces Data Rollover Plans

c_spire_gradients

C Spire Wireless is the sixth largest cellular provider in the United States of America, headquartered in Ridgeland, Mississippi and has approximately 1.2 million customers in the Mississippi, Memphis, Florida and Alabama. The business as approximately 1,400 cell sites and a permanent microwave ring across the Gulf Coast region. C Spire Wireless advertises national coverage and has done so since 2006. Today, C Spire Wireless is introducing three new data rollover plans that allow customers to carry forward any unused data allowances from month to month. What about calls, texts and MMS? Aha! The new plans allow unlimited talk, text and photographs plus automatic data overuse protection combined with optional top-up data allowance bundles.

The idea of rollover plans was first introduced to the American market by AT&T back in 2007, but with minutes rather than data. It’s an idea that’s been used across the world and is great for some customers as it means they can save up their minutes (or data in this case) from a quiet month to use when things get busier. C Spire Wireless are offering three plans and the SIM-only variants are $40 a month for 2 GB of data, $55 a month for 4 GB of data and $65 if the customer wants 6 GB of monthly data; if customers want one of these, they’ll have to bring their own unlocked device to the C Spire Wireless network. For plans including a device, the prices rise to $65, $80 and $90 for the 2 GB, 4 GB and 6 GB plans respectively. There are some terms and conditions to consider: you can only roll over the amount of data that your plan allows, so if you’re paying $40 a month for service, the most data you can have in a month is 4 GB (that being your regular monthly allowance plus 2 GB carrier over from the previous month). This is presumably to protect network users so that customers don’t save all their data for a one month blow out! The Rollover Data Plan includes tethering at no extra charge, but data top-ups are quite expensive at $10 for 500 MB, $15 for 1 GB and $45 for an extra 3 GB – although C Spire Wireless are keen to point out that unused data from an additional package is automatically rolled over (so as to maximise your hard earned dollars).

Are you with C Spire Wireless? If not, are you tempted to switch because you can roll over your data? Or do you need more than 6 GB of data a month and will likely never roll over any data? Let us know in the comments below.

Canadian Google Play Store Sells Out of Nexus 6 In 10 Minutes

Nexus-6-AH-20

The last time a Nexus product caused me to have a love / hate internal battle, it was the Google Galaxy Nexus as I deliberated the lowly 5 MP rear camera and size of the device. At the time, a 4.7-inch, 720p resolution display seemed outrageously large (even if not as comically massive as the 5.2-inch Galaxy Note). My. Haven’t times changed? Now, the Google Nexus 6 has me in knots because I love the Nexus ideology, the 2.7 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3 GB of RAM, at least 32 GB of memory plus a decent 13 MP camera and I especially like the sound of the Qi wireless charging, 3,220 mAh battery, I am less taken by the idea of a QHD 6.0-inch display as it’s too close to my Nexus 7 tablet. I know that I could make do (grins) with the Nexus 6, but each time I consider biting the bullet, the device is showing as “out of stock.” If you’re Canadian and in the same boat, going through the same deliberations, I have some news that might make the decision a little easier (or harder, depending on your perspective) because the Nexus 6 was finally available to pre-order from the Canadian Google Play Devices Store… for ten minutes, until three out of four variants went out of stock.

The Nexus 6 is available in two colors and two sizes, either Midnight Blue or Cloud White in 32 GB or 64 GB versions. The 32 GB variant is $749 and the 64 GB version another $50 at $799. We know that Rogers, Bell, Telus, Videotron and WIND Mobile are also going to carry the Nexus 6 and this might be your only recourse this year if you’re wanting one, as they’re showing as in stock but leaving the warehouse in “three to four weeks.” Throw in some Christmas delays and I think you’d be hard pushed to get the device for Christmas, although I’d hope to be proven wrong.

There’s clearly pent up demand for the Nexus 6 and I am confident that Google will be working extra hard to clear the backlog of pre-ordered Nexus 6 handsets. A little bit of hunger marketing can go a long way, as Xiaomi understand but too much can rattle potential customers and push them away from the product. But what do our readers think? If you’re looking to pick up a Nexus 6 in Canada and you missed the ten minute window, are you going to try a carrier? Wait? Head south of the border or hit up eBay when they start shipping? Let us know in the comments below.
