Android Headliner: Is Google Getting into the Wireless Game Good for the Industry?

Google Logo

This week, a report came out from The Information. Telling us that the dream of Google Wireless was real. Basically the report said that Google was working with T-Mobile and Sprint to sell their wireless services. Basically Google is looking to be an MVNO. A report came out on Thursday that Google has reached an agreement with Sprint to sell wireless services on their network. But we also heard that Google is looking to merge both networks together. Essentially doing what the FCC wouldn’t let Softbank do. For years we’ve been wanting a “Google Wireless”, as Google is already in with doing Google Fiber and bringing 1Gbps internet to everyone, why not a wireless network? I have a feeling, though, that Google Wireless is going to be all about data, and use WiFi Calling as well as VoLTE for everything. Seeing as that is the future.

So far we don’t have a whole lot of details on Google’s wireless network. Other than the fact they want to use T-Mobile and Sprint’s network. And they want to make it affordable for all. My first thought was that they can keep carriers from interfering with updates, which has been a big problem with Nexus devices, especially on Verizon and Sprint. But it could just be that Google wants to bring affordable wireless to all. And I think for this to really take off, Google needs to include AT&T and Verizon. For all we know, they could be in talks with those two carriers as well. We can only go by what we’ve been told by The Information.

Would Google Wireless be good for industry? I’m leaning neutral right now. There’s all kinds of pro’s and con’s with this. If it means we get unlimited data for around $20-30/month, then I’m all for it. But knowing Google, we’ll likely be seeing some extra ads somehow. Seeing as they are an Ad company. I think it’d be good for the customers, maybe not so much the carriers, although that would put more people on two of the smaller carriers here in the US. But the other thing is the FCC. Softbank had tried to combine Sprint and T-Mobile and the FCC basically said “hells nah”. And the fact that Google would control every bit of your mobile experience throws up some red flags as well. They’d control your network, your phone, and even a number of your apps like Gmail, Google+, Google Play Music, Google Search and a ton of others.

I’d definitely love to see Google Wireless available using all four carriers, and at a decent price. Seeing as the US has some of the highest priced mobile plans in the world. But it likely won’t launch for quite a while due to all of the hurdles that Google will need to jump through. How many of you would be interested in Google Wireless? Let us know in the comments below.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners’ Data Tries To Show Apple Dominates Samsung In Activations

The Chicago-based Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, or CIRP, has released new information showing the number of devices activated between the fourth quarter of 2014. It shows that half of people questioned had activated an iPhone, with a quarter using a Samsung and the rest being spread over a number of different manufacturers: LG scored 11%, Motorola 4% with both HTC and Nokia scoring 2%. However, it is worth noting that the CIRP’s survey consisted of just five hundred people. Five hundred in the context of the North American market is miniscule. Not to mention, the survey also includes used devices. The information is not entirely meaningless though as it does show the trend – people activate Apple, then Samsung products, with LG maintaining a strong third above “everybody else.”

Still, CIRP have also said that 25% of Samsung users and 18% of LG users who activated a handset over the quarter have moved to the iPhone. It seems reasonable to suppose that now Apple have finally invented the larger screen smartphone, customers who had previously moved to other brands are moving back. This doesn’t surprise me; the new market is broadly split between Android and iOS with a few percentage points dropped off the edge of the table being fought over by BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone and presumably Tizen OS. We’ve seen these market share figures ebb and flow depending on the launch cycle of Samsung and Apple; Apple are currently on the rise and will be until the second quarter, when Samsung’s new flagship is likely to cause Android’s market share to rise. This is one of the better demonstrations of how the market is influenced by the release cycle of a few manufacturers (and it’s something that Project Ara may break).

Looking through the data, that just four people activated a HTC or Nokia device is disappointing. From the HTC perspective, the devices are way better than their lowly market share. From the Nokia / Windows Phone device… that seems perfectly legitimate. I did see somebody using a Microsoft Windows Phone handset on the bus the other morning, but it’s a rare sight: I see way more people using HTC devices. How about our readers? When you go out in public, what devices do you see people using and does the table reflect this? Let us know in the comments below.

Xperia Z3 And Z3 Compact Root Method Now Available For Phones With Locked Bootloaders

nexus2cee_71uKogyopyL._SL1500__thumb Sony's international phones have unlockable bootloaders, and the company even encourages users to tinker around with neat extras like AOSP builds. Alas, in markets like the US the carriers are still the keepers of the keys for a lot of customers, and T-Mobile has once again insisted on locking that sucker down for anyone who buys its version of the Sony Xperia Z3. Now users with this lamentable affliction can at least get root access on their phones, thanks to a bounty-winning method from an XDA user.

Examples Of T-Mobile’s ‘Special Priced’ SCORE Plan Devices Revealed In Document

T-Mobile-Logo-AH-3

Yesterday an interesting rumor was circulating around T-Mobile. The rumor was that T-Mobile was planning on launching a new program, dubbed SCORE. To recap, SCORE is designed for those who are ineligible for T-Mobile’s JUMP (Just Upgrade My Phone) program and users who are not on a postpaid program or have problems with credit, to work towards a new device. To take part in the program, users will have to pay a $5 subscription charge per month. After six months of enrollment on the program, the user will be able to qualify for a ‘free entry level’ phone. What’s more, is that those who are able to hold on for a further six months (so twelve months in total) will be eligible for what T-Mobile was referring to as ‘special handset pricing’. Yesterday, this was not so clear as to what these special handset prices were or even what devices they were referring to. Although, it was presumed it was meant to be flagship level devices.

Well, a lot can happen in 24 hours and now it seems that a leaked document has made its way out, showing what those ‘special pricing’ details are likely to be like. The document includes the following examples. Users could pick up the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (which is currently priced at $769, for the SCORE price of $599. Similarly, Google’s Nexus 6 currently priced at $699 will cost on SCORE, $599. The HTC One M8 which is priced at $669 will be available via SCORE for $499. Sony’s offering, the Sony Xperia Z3 which is priced at $659 will be available on SCORE for $499. Lastly, the LG G3 which is currently priced at $549, on SCORE would cost $299.

Now, some of those prices do sound really good and they are. Especially when you consider that twelve monthly payments of $5, only adds up to $60. So, all of the savings shown do represent value for money. However, it is worth remembering that this list has been created as an example of what to expect and was shared among T-Mobile staff. As such, this is only being used as an indicator of what will be on offer. For instance, those who sign up with the program (which by the way, is rumored to be starting tomorrow), then by the time they have completed their year’s worth of payments, all of these phones will be old-hat. Therefore, the list is just there as a guide to show you what to expect, if you were to sign up. So what do we think of the types of discounts on offer? Enough to make you sign up to the SCORE Program? Let us know.

Snapchat Preparing Discovery Media Content Service For Imminent Launch

AH snapchat 1.1

Snapchat seemingly came from nowhere to become the darling social network that everybody wanted a slice of. In under four years, it moved from zero to hero with tens of millions of users and a valuation showing as $10 billion. And now Snapchat are working on moving into the media market, using their existing platform as a starting point, with the new Snapchat Discover service. Discover has been rumored for some time but now a release appears to be imminent. The new service is going to offer a mix of video and text from both Snapchat’s internal team and a portfolio of media providers. Snapchat has secured content deals with news giants such as Vice, CNN and ESPN and has been working on building a comprehensive in-house team of writers, artists and video makers. The new team will be led by Nick Bell, formerly at News. Corp, who joined Snapchat back in April. Hires include Verge reporter Ellis Hamburger, blogger Nicole James in the “creative” position, Matt Krautstrunk as the “video editor” and C J Smith is a Snapchat “content producer.”

How is Snapchat going to finance this? Advertisement, including the traditional form of pre-roll video as well as those designed to with the disappearing Snapchat image signature. Costs will vary between $0.15 to $0.30 per view. This is higher than YouTube adverts, which range up to $0.10 a showing. And I’m not sure about Snapchat using disruptive advertises and how this will work with the service. Actually, no; I’m not sure how well Snapchat can migrate from a quick hit picture provider into a news provider. A video of a few minutes long is going to feel like an eternity compared with the ten seconds of a current Snapchat. Giving Snapchat a new flavor is all well and good providing it doesn’t turn away current users. It’s clear that Snapchat is investing in a team to persuade users to stay tuned for more than these few seconds.

Still, Snapchat has managed to create successful media in the past. It’s sent users holiday animations and has covered live events using the Our Story feature, which bundles up short video clips and still images as “snaps,” related to a single event. The Our Story debuted at the World Cup in Rio and has been successful, but Discover moves things up a gear or two. However, perhaps Snapchat is buoyed by the success that other Internet companies have had around the world – most notable Netflix, who are increasing their investment into their own productions. Over to our readers: do you use Snapchat and if so, are you interested in their new Discovery service? Let us know in the comments below.

One Musician's Experience With YouTube Music Key Shows Why Google's Contract Terms Are Polarizing Artists

music key YouTube has become a great place for indie musicians to get their work out to the public, and in a few cases, even make a little extra money with Google's automated Content ID music identifying and licensing service. That was all well and good, right up to the point where Google decided it would make its video site into a formal music service with YouTube Music Key. We heard of serious issues with the contract terms even before the service launched, but now one independent artist has spilled the beans on those terms, and how they've left her in a conundrum.
