Recently Leaked HTC One (M9) Videos Are Real According To HTC’s Former Product Manager

HTC One (M9) is going to be unveiled on March 1st as part of MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona. The device info has been leaking all over the place for quite some time now, we’ve seen this handset’s benchmarks, cases, alleged designs, teasers… and quite recently, a couple of videos leaked showcasing the device as well. One of those videos focused on the phone’s 20-megapixel main camera, while the other one was a promo video for this device. People started questioning the legitimacy of those clips because the device showed there resembles the One (M8) a whole lot, except it didn’t have the Duo camera on the back, its bezels are somewhat trimmed, and the design is ever so slightly tweaked.

Well, it seems like these videos were real after all. HTC’s former product manager, Leigh Momii, who works for Cyanogen at the moment, tweeted the following: “the whole cat is out of the bag… no surprise there… I’ll probably get the gunmetal/black m9,” which looks like a confirmation. This could be yet another decoy by HTC, but that’s very unlikely at this point. We won’t consider this to be a confirmation just yet, of course, but it seems very probable at this point. According to a previously leaked CompuBench listing, the this handset will feature a 5-inch 1080 (1920 x 1080) display along with 3GB of RAM for all your multitasking needs and multiple storage options (the basic one will probably be 32GB). Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor will power on this handset along with an Adreno 430 GPU for graphics. Android 5.0.1 was mentioned in the listing, but some more recent reports are mentioning the 5.0.2 version, either way, you can expect Android Lollipop to come pre-installed on this handset with HTC’s Sense UI on top of it, of course. 20-megapixel camera will be located on the back of HTC’s newest flagship, and according to latest info, that camera will boast f/2.2 aperture and a 27.8mm lens equivalent.

LG Announces Global Rollout of the G Flex 2

This evening, LG has another press release for us. As usual, they are announcing something at around 9-10pm EST on a Tuesday. This time they are announcing global rollout of the LG G Flex 2. According to LG’s press release:

“Major carriers in the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Germany and the U.K. will be among the first to offer the G Flex2 to lucky customers while key markets in North and South America, Europe and Asia will announce the start of sales in the weeks following MWC.”

So it looks like we’ll be seeing the LG G Flex 2 here in the US very soon. While LG didn’t give us an exact date, or even “in the next week or two” type thing. We did hear from Sprint that their LG G Flex 2 will be available in March. And seeing as there’s only 4 days left in February, I’d venture to guess that it’ll still be March for these other countries. We’ll also see it in other countries in North America, South America, Europe and Asia following Mobile World Congress which starts next week.

The LG G Flex 2 was announced back at CES last month in Las Vegas. It was one of the few smartphones that made it’s first appearance at the popular Las Vegas show in January. LG stuffed an adequate 5.5-inch 1080p POLED display inside the LG G Flex 2, along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and 2GB of RAM, along with a 3000mAh battery powering it all. The specs aren’t the entire story of the LG G Flex 2 though. It is after all a flexible display. And you can bend it flat, although it won’t stay that way for long. Additionally the self-healing back is back again. It can pretty much heal everything within 30 minutes or so. Which we’ll be testing out when we get our review unit, for sure.

Huawei announces LTE-enabled Smartband, uses next-gen 4.5G radios

Huawei has taken the wraps off of a new Smartband device that features two industry-leading features. It’s the first ever LTE-enabled device of its kind, and it will utilize the company’s 4.5G network, which is labeled as being somewhere between 4G and 5G in terms of speed. The 4.5G network isn’t set to go live until next year, but this band is jumping on board earlier.

Aside from the connectivity, the band shares many features with Huawei’s current Smartband, including tons of health tracking sensors, NFC, Bluetooth, and a 1.4-inch OLED screen.

Expect to hear more about this band at MWC this year.

Pebble Time hits Kickstarter, bringing voice dictation and color e-paper display

This is Pebble Time, a color e-Ink smart watch with week-long battery life

That teasing little countdown timer on Pebble’s website has finally expired, and the announcement we’ve been waiting for has been made. Pebble today introduced Pebble Time, their next generation e-Ink smart watch.

This little guy distinguishes itself from the original with its color e-ink display. It makes for a much nicer-looking watch face which should enable many more possibilities than the monotone display of the original.

Battery life on Pebble Time is still exceptional, with the company boasting the ability to go a week without having to chart it up. That’s much more comfortable than the standard 1-2 days you’ll see for other smart watches.

Pebble Time integrates a microphone for you to be able to issue voice commands with several apps. It’s also water resistant, has standard 22mm watch band clips to be able to use whichever band you like.

Software wise, the updated Pebble OS will continue to support all of the apps that have been made for the original, though developers will have to do some work to upgrade their apps to look their best on the device’s color display.

They’ve also added a new feature called Timeline that will give you access to your apps in chronological order depending on what’s going on. If you get an email at 1:30PM, have a lunch meeting at 2PM, and an alarm set for 8AM the next day, you might see the email app, calendar app and your alarm app lined up in that particular order. It only makes sense for a time piece to construct its flow of activity based on, well, time.

And that’s Pebble Time. In a “back to the roots” move, the company decided to take to Kickstarter to allow early enthusiasts and developers to get in on the fun. The cheapest option for buying one is $159, which is an early access price. Its regular retail price will initially be set at $199 so you’re getting a pretty good deal by grabbing one through Kickstarter.

The page has only been up a short while and Pebble has already sold half of the stock available at that price so you won’t want to wait too long. They will have more units available at a discount after the $159 lot has been claimed, though you’ll have to fork up $179 (which is still cheaper than retail).

The company has raised $1.5 million to smash its $500,000 goal already so you certainly won’t have to worry about it not being funded, and you can expect the first units to begin shipping in May (barring any delays, of course). Be sure to head to Kickstarter and drop your dollars if you’re interested.

Pebble Announces Pebble Time with Colored e-Paper and Week-long Battery Life

After a few teasers, and a countdown on Pebble’s site, we now know what they were going to announce. It’s Pebble Time. A brand new smartwatch, that they are actually launching on Kickstarter. It’s biggest features are the fact that it is now a colored e-paper display, and has even longer battery. Pebble is saying up to a week. Which absolutely kills Android Wear. However Android Wear does have nicer displays and more functionality.

So Pebble has been around for a few years, and sold a ton of smartwatches already. Why are they launching the Pebble Time on Kickstarter? Allow their Kickstarter page to answer that question:

“This is where it all started. Three years ago you supported our vision to make the world’s first real smartwatch. The Kickstarter community and our early adopters believed in us before anyone else even knew we existed. You blew us away with your support and kicked off a worldwide movement!”

Much like any other smartwatch out there, you can change the watch face, but now there’s more info at a glance then there was on the original Pebble. Which is a pretty big deal. Additionally, you can change your wrist strap like on most other watches too. It uses a 22mm watch strap, so you can replace it with a nice leather one, a steel one, or really any watch strap. The Pebble Time comes in black, white and red this time around.

The Pebble Time will set you back $159. And on Kickstarter their prices start at $159 and go up from there. According to Kickstarter it looks like the Pebble Time will be available in May of this year, so we’ve got a few more months to wait. It’s a pretty decent looking smartwatch from Pebble. Maybe not as nice looking as Pebble Steel, but not bad either. I think I’d still prefer Android Wear over Pebble Time, but definitely a step in the right direction, especially since Pebble does support Android Wear notifications and apps now. Which is a pretty big deal.

Sony Xperia E4 gets a 4G LTE upgrade

Sony has announced the Sony Xperia E4g. It’s a refreshed version of yesteryear’s Sony Xperia E4, except this one comes with LTE on board. The two devices share much of the same specs and features, including a 4.7-inch 960 x 540 display, a 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera, a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and more.

Not the most exciting device on paper, but the Xperia E4G is meant to bring a decent smartphone experience to those who can’t shell out the money for a more powerful option. April is the earliest we’ll see it, and it’s retail price is set at about €129. Specific availability and pricing will depend on your carrier, of course, so be sure to keep your eye on your carrier of choice if you’re looking to snag one of these in a couple of months.

How to Be the Best Uber Passenger You Can Be to Ensure Prompt Pick up Times

The ride sharing company Uber pairs you with Uber contracted drivers around your area via their smartphone application for a quick ride. While Uber has been the center of several controversies over the past year, they provide a relatively easy and convenient service. All you need to do as a passenger, is use the Uber app to enter your pick up location. Shortly after, the service pairs you with a nearby driver and you are notified upon their arrival. As for the fares, the company uses a dynamic pricing model based on demand. Rides during rush hour or other congested times would therefore be more expensive than those during off peak hours. While you would think the drivers would be the only ones to be held accountable for their service through ratings, it turns out passengers are assigned ratings as well! After each ride, the driver is given the opportunity to rate his passenger from one to five. If your rating falls too low, it could prove difficult to find a driver willing to pick you up.

A few ways you can improve your rating revolve around politeness and common courtesy, however there are a few more fine points that drivers mentioned on a survey. One of the biggest gripes drivers have, is when their passenger is not ready to go upon arrival. Getting 100% ready before requesting a driver can ensure a high passenger rating. Another thing that makes Uber drivers’ jobs more difficult is when it is a struggle to locate you. Next time you book an Uber ride, be sure to enter in an exact address rather than just hitting current location on the map.

While the drivers surveyed mentioned various things you can do to improve your rating, they also strongly voiced a few things which can earn a passenger a poor rating. These employees use their own vehicles, so people eating and leaving trash in the car is a surefire way to get down voted. Worse than this drivers mentioned how annoying it is when receiving fares far too short to prove profitable considering the time and gas needed to pick you up. Setting illegal zones for pickup, bringing out of control kids, farting, and bringing more passengers than the car can legally fit are all methods which earn passengers low scores as well. Wondering what your passenger score is? If you contact Uber customer support they will provide your rating to you directly. So next time you take a ride with Uber keep these things in mind, especially if you’re a regular user of the service.
