Samsung suffers as tablet demand plummets

Samsung-Banner-Huge

Samsung may be the manufacturing king of Android devices, but even this behemoth suffers from the natural fluctuations in the market. The Korean manufacturer is not looking at a very bright year in tablet sales, forcing them to make preparations for the plummeting numbers.

Partners and suppliers have been notified of lower manufacturing numbers in 2014. The company is expecting to sell under 60 million tablets this year. Though this may appear to be a huge number, it’s much lower than the 70-80 million Sammy expected to sell this year. It’s also abysmal compared to the 100 million units the company aimed for in 2013.

Samsung… it’s not you

Samsung is not the only one suffering. The industry has been dreaming of the day when tablets would completely replace desktop and laptop computers. Tablets have become very successful as desktop computer replacements, but the industry is not seeing this invasion spread as fast as expected.

Market research firm Gartner believes tablet market share will grow by 38.6% this year. Though tablet market share continues to grow, this number is very alarming if we compare it to last year’s 68% in growth. It’s just not a great time for tablet manufacturers.

Revenue is not helping, either

While Samsung tablets sell more than any other Android tablets, revenue is not as high as Samsung would like. For example, Samsung sold about 12.8 million tablets during Q1, about 30% less than Apple. They only made about $3,422.7 in revenue, though, less than half what Apple made.

Even if Samsung were to sell as many tablets as Apple, they won’t make the same amount of money.

Samsung tablets in the near future

samsung premiere 2014 invitation

We can only hope Android tablets become more popular as demand for larger mobile devices rises over personal computers. Samsung, and all other manufacturers, will continue to make worthy devices and it seems Samsung is in the right track.

We all have our preferences. Some of you may prefer other manufacturers, but Samsung’s upcoming tablets are looking promising. The Korean giant is getting ready to hold a Galaxy Premiere event next month, where they will announce multiple tablets. These will come in various sizes, colors and configurations, making sure there is something for everyone in the pool.

It won’t be Samsung’s year, though. Sorry, maybe in 2015!

Dong Nguyen is fed up with the Flappy Bird talk, so he is making a new game

flappy bird

Flappy Bird is gone, Flappy Bird is coming, Flappy Bird this and that! No matter what happens, Flappy Bird just can’t stay off the news and everyone’s conversations. Developer Dong Nguyen is “fed up” with all the Flappy Bird talk, so he has decided to give us something else to talk about – a new game!

Nguyen showed off his new game on his Twitter feed, displaying an image of a boy jumping between buildings. Not exactly a bird going through tubes, but you can definitely tell it’s going the same direction. No other details were given.

dong-nguyen-jumping-game

What about Flappy Bird?!

We have a love/hate relationship with Flappy Bird. It’s so hard it’s addictive. How can it be so difficult to flap an 8-bit bird between two tubes? The game turned into an overnight hit, ruining our productivity, consuming our time and making the developer completely miserable.

Developer Dong Nguyen was forced to take the game down, only promising he would consider re-releasing it after “making it better”. After months of silence, Nguyen has spoken up and revealed the game is coming back in August!

flappy-birds

Changes to come

Dong Nguyen is a game developer at heart, but he never wanted to make a game that destroyed people’s productivity. He spoke up against his own game’s addiction and took it down for the very same reason, even if it did make him very good cash.

Dong doesn’t feel any differently right now. In fact, he has revealed that his new version of Flappy Bird will be different. It will be less addictive and feature a multiplayer mode. We are not sure exactly what this means, but you can expect this jumping game to follow the same moral standards.

I still have the original Flappy Bird app, so I am good until the new one is released.

Apple and Motorola shake hands, ask courts to dismiss their patent lawsuits

Apple iPhone 5s vs Motorola Moto X aa 15In a joint statement this afternoon, Motorola Mobility, which is still owned by Google, and Apple have asked the federal appeals court in Washington to dismiss open patent lawsuits against each other. This puts an end to disputes that go back as far as 2010, but does not include any cross licensing deals.

The statement continues with a brief note the Google and Apple have agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform moving forward.

We are all familiar with the ongoing battles between Apple and most of the manufacturers of Android powered devices. In this case, Motorola accused Apple of infringing several patents back in 2010. Apple returned fire with several of its own. In 2012, a Chicago court dismissed both based on lack of sufficient evidence on either end. Just last month the appeals court allowed the case to re-open.

The decision to drop the cases against each other does not extend beyond that of Motorola Mobility and its devices. The ever popular Samsung vs. Apple cases shall remain for the courts to endure.

There has been no announcement as to why the companies have decided to jointly dismiss the cases in the courts. Speculation includes ideas like, as the judge in Chicago had figured, there still is not enough evidence to work with, or that the devices and patents for the cases are no longer of consequence to current product sales.

Lenovo Brand 2014

It can not be overlooked that Google is in the final stages of selling Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. It is entirely possible that Google has coughed up a couple bucks to appease Apple and make these cases go away. Clearing these lawsuits closes out a major liability that would have been acquired with Motorola Mobility, thus smoothing the way for a clean takeover by new owners Lenovo in the months to come. This may have even been a condition of sale between Google and Lenovo, especially considering the confusion that would come about should Google plan to retain the related Motorola patents in the sale, leaving Motorola no longer in ownership of the patents that it is suing over.

One thing is for certain, we are very pleased to hear that Google and Apple will be working together on some areas of patent reform. We look forward to seeing positive results, producing smarter patents and fewer patent trolls gaming the system in the future.

What do you think, should this be viewed as an alliance between Google and Apple, or is this just a short cease-fire on one small front of the overall patent wars?

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Google Play Weekly

Welcome back to another episode of Google Play Weekly! This week we talk about a huge Google Play Store update that included a lot of awesome stuff. Plex supports camera upload now. A research project called Cider has iOS apps running on Android. Half-Life 2 and Portal were released for NVIDIA Shield. PortedAPP lets you run OEM skin apps on any device. Finally, here are five Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week!

bright weather android appsBright Weather

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

First up this week is an app called Bright Weather and it’s done by the same developers who brought us the insanely popular Beautiful Widgets. At its core, Bright Weather is just another weather app. You can find weather in your area or around the world, view local forecasts, view radar, and some more unique stuff like a weather almanac. What makes the app nice is the design which includes new background images daily and more interactive elements than usual. It’s free in the Play Store right now.

make it rain android appsMake It Rain

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Next up is a run little time waster game called Make It Rain. In this game you swipe up on a pile of money to make money, then you spend it on other things that make you money. Every action in this game only serves to make you more money. Except the FBI spin wheel, which actually just takes away your money. It’s a lot of fun in short runs and it’s definitely something a little different. It’s also free.

monument valley android appsMonument Valley

[Price: $3.99]

Monument Valley is an optical-illusion based puzzle game that’s both fun to look at and to play. The level design in this title is one of a kind and while the game is pretty short, very few people seem to be regretting spending the $3.99 the game is going for in the Play Store. The music, game play, and art work all seem to seamlessly blend together in a stunning presentation that you can enjoy with your eyes and your ears. If you have $4 to spend, give this one a shot.

per-app modes android appsPer-App Modes

[Price: $1.99]

Next up is Per App Modes which is one of the best root apps ever. It was updated to version 2.0 which added bug fixes, performance improvements, a polished up UI, multi-selection support, and many other smaller UI and performance tweaks to make things better. For those who may not know, Per App Modes is a root app that lets you set the maximum and minimum CPU speeds on various apps along with other variables. This can help improve performance on heavy games, save battery on less CPU intensive apps, and give you more control over how your device acts. It’s a $1.99 and if you’re root user, you should go give this one a look.

grab my charger icon android appsGrab My Charger

[Price: Free for a limited time]

Last up this week is an app that’s perfect for travelers called Grab My Charger. The premise for this app is simple. It uses your phone’s GPS and an alarm to make sure that you grab your charger when you leave. It seems useless for normal folks but if you’re traveling, leaving your phone charger behind sucks. So what you do is set the alarm when you plug in your charger and if you leave without it, the app will send you a notification. It’s free for a limited time so check it out now!

Google snatches up company behind Word Lens visual translator, offers free language packs for limited time

Word Lens Russian

Word Lens has been around in the mobile world for a long time, first arriving to iPhone in 2010 and later coming to Android in 2012. What makes the app so interesting is its ability to translate in real time by pointing your device’s camera at the text you wish to translate, and then it instantly translates right before your eyes.

While Word Lens is far from perfect in its translations and only is offered in a few language choices (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Portuguese) — there’s tons of potential here, and apparently Google agrees. Google has now purchased Quest Visual, the company behind the app, for an undisclosed amount.

For now, Words Lens will continue to be available, but the long-term goal is to obviously combine Word Lens’ technology and expertise into the Google Translate experience. Considering Google’s wider range of resources and expanded language support, this is certainly an interesting proposition to say the least. Of course, Google already can do image translations but they’re not on fly like Word Lens — nor can Google Translate do it while offline.

In the meantime, you’ll not only be able to still get the Word Lens app, you’ll also be able to download all the existing language packs free of charge. Once the Word Lens team fully integrates into the Google Translate team? It’s likely only a matter of time before the app is officially canceled, though neither Google or Quest Visual come right out and say this.

HTC One M7 Sense 6.0 update rolling out to unlocked and developer handsets in the U.S.

HTC One Review

Earlier this week we learned that the HTC One M7 was getting an update to Sense 6.0 in Canada for both unlocked devices and those on Rogers, Bell and TELUS networks. At the time we surmised that it would only be a matter of time before the US market received the same update, and it turns out this was a correct assumption.

Taking to Twitter, HTC product manager Leigh Momii revealed that the update is now rolling out to Developer Edition and unlocked HTC One M7 owners. While this currently leaves carrier-branded HTC One M7 owners out of the fun, the good news is that AT&T, Sprint and Verizon are likely not too far behind, as their updates are already in the final certification stage. T-Mobile still appears to be in the development stage, however, so it seems possible that the uncarrier could be the last one to the party.

htc-one-m7-update

So what’s new here in this 668MB update? According to the change-log, we are looking at new interfaces for the Gallery and Camera apps, which should include many of the same camera improvements found in the M8 — though there may be some limitations due to hardware differences. The log also mentions Blinkfeed improvements, better theme/font support, HTC’s Extreme Power Saving mode and more.

Anyone snag the update yet, if so, what do you think of the improvements so far? For those with a carrier version, hang tight, we’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as we learn more about when you’ll see the upgrade to Sense 6.0.

10 great uses for old Android phones/tablets

There’s so much that your Android device is capable of and you just haven’t realized it yet. So, with a little bit of effort, you can help your old Android device break free from the depths of your cupboard.

Here are some of the best examples.

1. Alarm clock

People still buy dedicated alarm clocks? Are you using your smartphone as an alarm clock? It’s easy to grab a dock and an app to create an Android powered alarm clock. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean might have added Daydream to make your alarm clock look more beautiful, but you don’t need to have the latest and greatest Android tablet or smartphone to use it as an alarm clock.

nexus-4-tip-daydream4

The Daydream feature can be easily accomplished by other apps for lower versions of Android. They aren’t quite as elegant as Daydream though.

There are dozens of apps which can turn your Android tablet or smartphone into an alarm clock (Alarm Clock Xtreme is a popular one), and with a $10 dock from eBay, you can save yourself the trouble of buying a dedicated alarm clock. What’s even better is that, if you are a particularly heavy sleeper, you can always plug your Android device into your surround system (or just a regular speaker) to make sure that you don’t miss that important meeting.

2. MP3 Player

Are you a heavy music listener? Your old Android smartphone or tablet is perfect for such situations. We are already trying to eke out every last drop of battery life from our Android smartphones, and if you are a particularly heavy music listener, you can waste a good 10% or more in one day of listening to music locally, never mind streaming it.

Luckily, you can use your old Android smartphone or tablet (smartphone would be more preferable in this situation for obvious reasons) as a dedicated MP3 player. This way you can conserve your precious battery life for more important matters. An old Android smartphone without a SIM card is also perfect for your gym sessions, so that you won’t be distracted by any phone calls or texts while you are working out.

You can also store your favourite videos for mobile viewing. So now you can watch Gangam Style to your heart’s content without taking a hit in the battery life department.

3. Baby monitor/Security monitor

If you’ve got an IP camera then you can use your old Android smartphone or tablet as a monitor. Whether you want to keep an eye on the baby or you just want to know who’s at the door, your old Android smartphone or tablet fits the bill perfectly. You can even hook your tablet up on the wall to be used as an LCD monitor for a fixed position in your living room. Audio-only is so 20th century, and those dedicated LCD monitors can be costly, so using your old Android tablet or smartphone would be perfect.

Best app for the job: IP Cam Viewer Lite

4. A development device

So you’ve spent a few hours reading about these cool custom ROMs on the XDA forums, but you are afraid of bricking your shiny new Android device. Maybe you don’t want to lose your warranty. That’s why your old Android smartphone or tablet can be transformed into your development device so that you can explore the wonderful world of Android customization, without having to worry about bricking your device.

android custom roms

Paranoid Android (left), Cyanogen Mod (center), AOKP (right).

There are loads of custom ROMs to try, and if you have a particularly popular old smartphone or tablet, then you’ll be well supported by the development community.

5. DSLR Remote controller

If you like to experiment with your DSLR shots, pairing your old Android smartphone or tablet to your DSLR can bring some interesting shots. You can create great time lapse shots, time controlled HDR-sequences, and all sorts of other functions. If you’ve got an old Android tablet with Infrared built-in (like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus), you can use the built-in IR blaster to control your DSLR as well.

Great app for the job: DSLR Remote

6. Cookbook

You can buy cooking books and tutorials from the Play Store or just use Youtube to watch tutorials.

Those cooking sessions can get messy, so using your old Android phone or tablet as a digital cookbook would be incredibly convenient. You can buy cooking books and tutorials from the Play Store or just use Youtube to watch tutorials. With your old Android phone or tablet by your side, all of those incredible dishes that you saw on TV and thought were impossible to make, can now become a reality.

Great apps for the job: YouTube, Kindle app.

7. Digital photo frame

There are hundreds of Wi-Fi connected digital photo frames to choose from, but why spend money on something you already have. An Android tablet coupled with a dock would be perfect to show a slideshow of your favorite pictures on your tablet. There are dozens of apps to pick from, and you can even use it as a digital photo frame and a bedside alarm clock. Talk about multi-purpose.

Great app for the job: Photo Slides

8. Emulator console

Chances are that your old Android smartphone or tablet won’t be able to run the newest graphics intensive games, but that won’t stop them from being great emulator consoles. If you’d like to relive the glory days of your Game Boy’s, Play Station’s, Nintendo 64’s and all your other favourite older consoles, your old Android smartphone or tablet can do just that. With loads of emulators to choose from, you’ll be sure to find one for your respective console of choice.

Great apps to choose from: ePSXe for Android, SuperN64, My Boy! Free.

Best RPGs for Android - Emulators

9. E-Reader

Just like MP3 players, very few people buy dedicated E-Readers anymore. Now instead of taking a battery hit on your smartphone while you’re reading your favourite novel, you can use your old smartphone or tablet as an E-Reader. What’s even better is that if you have an old Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S2 or any other smartphone with an OLED display, you can switch to the night theme and enjoy incredible battery life thanks to the low energy consumption of OLED displays when showing predominantly black screens.

Kindle e-reader

Great apps to choose from: Kindle app, Google Play Books.

10. There’s so much more you can do!

There are all sorts of other crazy, interesting use cases that can keep you busy long into the summer D.I.Y. season. You've just got to be a little imaginative.

We could’ve limited this list to 10 definitive choices, but there’s so much more you can do with your old Android tablet or smartphone. You can pilot quadrocopters, use them as media servers, install them on your car dashboard for in-car entertainment and GPS systems, use them as a controller for your home automation systems, and all sorts of other crazy, interesting use cases that can keep you busy long into the summer D.I.Y. season. You’ve just got to be a little imaginative.

You can also mix and match different ideas into the one tablet or smartphone so that you can use your old device for more than one purpose, and if you still haven’t found a good use for your old Android device, then you can sell or recycle it, or even donate it to a worthy cause.

Have you been inspired to break your old Android device free from the dark depths of your closet? Which idea interests you most?

Europe’s busiest airport will have a terminal called “Samsung Galaxy S5” (for two weeks)

airport terminal heathrow Curt Smith

Samsung does not have an unlimited marketing budget, but it probably seems so to some of its competitors. The company, which paid $20 million for a few hours in the Oscars limelight, has spent an estimated $14 billion for ads and other marketing activities in 2013 alone. That sort of budget opens up a lot of possibilities, including some pretty wild ones, like taking over the biggest terminal of Europe’s busiest airport.

Samsung just announced that London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, one of the largest and busiest terminals in the world, will be renamed “Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5” for a two-week period.

In what the company calls a “revolutionary campaign,” all signage, indicators, digital screens, and even the terminal’s website will sport the new name. Samsung was allowed “to push the boundaries like no other brand has been allowed to do before,” as this is the first time Heathrow Airport allowed such a brand takeover for Terminal 5.

Opened in 2008, Terminal 5 is Heathrow’s largest, at 350,000 square meters, and almost 30 million passengers transited in 2012 alone. As such, Samsung’s campaign is guaranteed to put its self-dubbed “iconic” Galaxy S5 in front of hundreds of thousands of potential customers. But large airports can get hectic even without a potentially confusing name change, so Samsung’s marketing heads better hope that the stunt doesn’t backfire.

As for why is Samsung spending lavishly for this campaign, the company registered a sharp drop in the UK in Q1 2014, falling from 36.7 percent to 30.2 percent market share. With strong competition from Apple and Sony at the high-end and Motorola in the budget segment, Samsung’s pulling all stops to make the Galaxy S5 a hit.

Swype update: faster, stronger and less buggy

swype keyboard

Swype made it to the Google Play Store last year and has since then gotten between 500,000 and 1,000,000 downloads. It has its following since way before it reached the Play Store, but there is always room for improvement. The latest update is hefty and brings forth a healthy list of fixes and enhancements.

Improvements include performance enhancement, better support and bug fixes (as do all updates).

Performance improvements

  • Hardware acceleration improves keyboard dismissal time.

  • Better response for low-end devices and Chinese keypad.

  • Default dictionary words no longer treated as custom words (caused unnecessary activity).

Better support

  • Improved user adaptation and word completion for tapped words.

  • Better syncing, reduced data usage.

  • Burmese & Khmer languages added.

  • Swype keyboard will adapt in apps that use menu bars

  • Added more Chinese punctuation.

Fixed bugs

  • Spell checker no longer suggests English words in other locales.

  • Users can now personalize their language with Twitter again.

  • Fixed issue where split keyboard would display incorrectly on Samsung KitKat devices.

  • Fixed crashes.

That is one long list of improvements! It will be an outstanding update for Swype users, who can now get the update from the Google Play Store.

This happens to be one of our favorite keyboards, so you may as well give it a try if you haven’t. It does cost $3.99, but it is one of the most popular Android keyboards out there.

Download Swype from the Google Play Store ($3.99)

Swype was the first to make “swyping” popular in the Android platform. Other keyboards like SwiftKey (and many others) have adopted this feature and applied it to their own apps, but people still calls it “swyping”. You can’t take the credit from the pioneers!

Your bills won’t pay themselves, so Google Now will remind you about them

google now nexus 5

Bills, bills, bills. They consume our month’s paychecks, especially when we forget to pay them and those nasty late fees show up! We all have our ways of keeping track of bills an payments, but Google wants you to get rid of all those archaic methods and opt for their virtual assistant, which will do all the work for you.

Google Now’s new ability brings bill reminders, a tool that will make sure you keep tabs on your payments. You know, just in case the snail mail, emails, and any other notices don’t work. How does Google even know, though? Sorcery, I say!

Not quite, but Google does have its sneaky ways to get your bill information. After all, Google is the master of searching. All Google Now needs to do is search through your emails and determine which ones are bill/payment related. It then transforms the details into helpful Google Now Cards.

How does it look?

The Google Now card is rather simple. It simply shows the bill title (name of the company you owe money to), the amount owed, due date and an option allowing you to view the email regarding the bill. Like so:

now-bill-reminders

You can then choose whether you want to see more bills from said company or not.

The future of Google Now

Google Now may not be as funny as Siri or as “cool” as Cortana, but it does offer amazing functionality. It’s very hard to beat Google’s information resources. They hold the most popular email client, the biggest mobile OS and Google Search (pretty much the internet’s homepage).

Having these services gives Google Now a titanic advantage, allowing it to get more integrated and fun features. We can tell Google has been working a lot on improving Google Now. Most recently, the digital assistant recently learnt to show you what surrounding stores offer items you have recently searched for.

Google Now is very important for Android’s future and these bill reminders are only proof of what this service can become.
