Specs for Verizon bound Droid Turbo may have been leaked

Motorola has been really busy in the news the last couple of weeks. The Moto 360, Moto X+1, and Moto G2 all have announcement dates that are a mere three weeks away. It turns out that there may even more on the horizon from Motorola.

An anonymous source has sent in screenshots (pictured below) of a possible Motorola device that would be running on Verizon that is allegedly called the Droid Turbo. The specs are incredibly impressive and include:

• Snapdragon 805 clocked at 2.65GHz


• 3GB RAM, 32GB of storage


• 1440 x 2560 resolution with a 360 x 640 DPI (which, according to math, makes it a 4.59″ display)


• Android 4.4.4


• 20MP rear camera, 2MP front camera

The other notable stat from the screenshots is that the model number is XT1254 (quark_verizon). The “XT” has been used in Motorola’s RAZR line up before. Based on that and the fact that the word “Verizon” is in the screen shot, we would wager a guess that this is likely Verizon’s Droid RAZR device for this year. Or at least one of them since Verizon and Motorola releases multiple variants of the Droid RAZR series every year.

The one weird stat is the 4.59″, 1440p display that’s capable of an absurd 640 PPI which seems a bit ridiculous at first glance. However, it appears as though there are displays out there that fit that many pixels on such a small screen. Of course, it’s also been rumored that Alcatel is working on a phone with a similar screen so it’s not the first we’ve heard of a 4.6″ screen at 1440p resolution. Even if we haven’t actually seen one yet, it appears as though we will, eventually.

Usually we’d say that this is just a rumor and to take it with a grain of salt. However, there is a Bluetooth SIG page for this device that’s dated for August 13th so that means we’re all but certain that this device is real. The only questions we really have left are when will it be released and what is it actually going to be called (likely the Droid Turbo but we don’t know for sure). Until Motorola drops more details, all we know for sure is that this is most likely real and that it’s heading to Verizon.

Sprint’s new CEO Claure ready to stir things up

Sprint’s new CEO Marcelo Claure has stirred things up after only a few days on the job. In a town hall meeting with employees of Sprint, Claure laid out plans to make the company into another disruptive carrier in the market similar to what T-Mobile has been doing. Claure’s plan has three phases – cutting prices, improving the network and lowering costs.

Claure says the first phase will get started next week when new pricing plans described as “very disruptive” will be revealed. Claure said the plans will be “simple and attractive.” He also said that as the market changes, Sprint will react more quickly to remain competitive.

The second phase will involve improvements to the Sprint network which many see as falling behind leaders AT&T and Verizon. Claure acknowledged Sprint is behind when he said,

“When you have a great network, you don’t have to compete on price. When your network is behind, unfortunately you have to compete on value and price.”

Claure is under no illusion the improvements will come about quickly, but he does think Sprint has a strong portfolio of spectrum that it can successfully leverage.

The final phase, cost-cutting, raises the spectre of job cuts. Claure says they are inevitable, but he does not know to what extent. Decisions on that would take place later.

Despite talk of layoffs down the road, the reaction from employees to Claure’s speech seems to have been very positive. He indicated he wanted employees to have the tools they needed to make sales and that he wanted them to feel free to contact him, going so far as to share his direct email address.

Leaked video suggest HTC One (E8) coming to Sprint

Earlier today a video from Sprint was accidentally released showing what appeared to be the HTC One (E8) coming to the network. The cheaper, plastic-bodied version of the HTC One (M8) flagship was released in China earlier this summer. It was unclear whether the device would make it to the U.S. market at the time.

The video from Sprint, which has since been pulled, was apparently released prematurely. Since the video did not contain any information regarding pricing or availability according to sources that viewed it, we do not have any idea when the device may be ready for consumers to purchase. The fact that a video exists is a good sign though that we will eventually see it in the U.S.

The HTC One (E8) is comparable to the HTC One (M8) in most respects. The body is plastic and the other major change is the normal camera instead of HTC’s duo camera setup. The E8 comes with a 5.0-inch 1080p HD display, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage to go with a 13 MP camera and 2600mAh battery. The device comes with HTC’s Sense 6 user interface running on top of Android 4.4.

Android Epic App Battles: Uber V.S. Lyft

With all the hubbub over the unethical tactics claimed to be used by both Uber and Lyft against each other in an attempt to stifle business as well as lure the competitors employees to the other side, we felt that it was fitting that we look at the Uber V.S. Lyft battle this week. Both companies are somewhat new startups attempting to shake up the ride-share and taxi business, offering cheap rides to clients that can be reserved through a handy dandy smartphone application. They both offer similar services so we’ll attempt to look at the differences, however little there may be, and see who deserves to be crowned KING among the two.

Uber

For starters, Uber has one feature about it that could give it a major advantage. Google has stake in the company as perhaps as a result of it you can easily find the closest Uber rides near you from within Google Maps, tap on them, and have it take you to the Uber app to place the reservation for the ride. This makes finding Uber rides even easier as you don’t even have to be using the app. You can be using Maps and looking for something completely unrelated, not even intending to have Uber pick you up and transport you to your destination. Uber also has the capability for the client to select what type of ride they’re looking for, meaning you can select rides in different categories like Uber T, Uber X, Uber SUV, and Uber Black if you’re looking for more of a luxury ride. If you’ll be using Uber to get across town and coming from the grocery store, you can reserve a ride from the Uber T or Uber SUV for more space if you have a lot of bags. Those rides also might be cheaper.

If you’re going out on the town however and you want to show up in style, or if you’re on the way to the airport and you want a more luxurious comfortable ride on the way there, the Uber Black might be a better choice. Uber is located in more than 130 cities and 30 countries across the globe, so they have a fairly expansive fleet and are available in many places. You can check fares and compare ride quotes, watch as your driver heads your direction to pick you up, and you can pay with your phone so no there’s no cash needed. If you’re riding with multiple people you can even easily split the fare between all parties involved to make paying as simple as possible. When it comes to payment, you can either enter a credit/debit card into your secure Uber account, or you can simply pay with Google Wallet or PayPal if you feel safer doing it that way. The app is free, so is setting up an account, and using the app seems to be fairly simple.

Lyft

Lyft in many ways doesn’t seem to be too different. They offer new members their first ride for free with the code PLAYSTORE,(up to $25)something that Uber seems to do as well with the code GPLAYUS. Lyft also performs background checks on all their drivers so you know you’re not going to be riding with someone that is maniac and might play too much Crazy Taxi. Lyft takes pride in their drivers and what they offer, which is why they only let the highest rated drivers out on the road. Drivers are rated by passengers, so it seems that if a Driver’s rating drops at all they potentially lose the ability to head out and pick people up. For how long who knows, if that’s even the case. Either way, Lyft will only send the highest rated drivers out to pick you up, so you know it’ll be an enjoyable and comfortable experience. As Lyft states, they may even become your next friend!

Payment is also easy with the Lyft app as you don’t need cash, and payments are made through your phone, presumably through PayPal, Google Wallet or added credit/debit cards as well. The interface is easy to see and use, and requesting a ride just takes one tap. Since there’s no option to select different types of rides, getting a ride could be considered quicker. There’s also the cool pink mustache of course, something that really elevates the ride experience for users. Lyft is also free and so is setting up a Lyft account, so in that regard Lyft and Uber are also the same.

So which application takes the cake? Uber seems to have more options available to clients, with multiple ride selections, and you can also see the nearest Uber rides from within Google Maps. Lyft on the other hand just sends out the nearest driver, so reserving a ride is as simple as tapping one button, thus making the action of getting a Lyft ride potentially quicker. Android Game Of The Week: Eliss Infinity

Puzzle games are somewhat of longtime passion for many gamers. They have manifested in many various forms over the years, sometimes finding themselves acting merely as elements in another genre type. Although games with puzzle like elements are great, Eliss Infinity is not one of those games and is a true Puzzle game to its core, with a tiny bit of action. I found the retro style 8 bit graphics to be a nice touch. A classic style of visuals for a classic style of game that has been around for quite some time. Eliss Infinity may seem odd at first as there really isn’t any text involved in any of the game menus, so you kinda have to figure out exactly what each button does and which takes you to what menu. It only took me a minute to figure out, but it almost felt like in doing this, the game’s creators made navigating through the menus themselves kind of like a puzzle which for me, added to the overall allure of the game.

Upon starting the first level, you’re greeted with helpful little tips on how to play, and this is always something that I find extremely useful in helping new players figure things out. The game is steeped in 8-bit design from head to toe, right down to the sounds and effects, which accompany the awesome atmospheric soundtrack quite nicely. The game is touted as fast paced, and it lives up to its description. You’ll find yourself in the middle of an easy level, complete it, then move onto the next only to find out that you’re now having to scramble and utilize the multi-touch gameplay to keep from losing. This scenario comes up pretty early so you’ll know it when you see it.

Eliss includes multiple game modes, including the all new Infinity mode, which is how this version of the game got its name, and is an endless and score based gameplay mode where you’ll be able to line up bigger strings of combos to raise your score and get a hold of bigger powerups. There’s also the Odyssey mode, which is the game the way it was introduced in its original form with 25 levels, but of course more polished and with a couple new features. Lastly there’s the Spacebox mode where you can generate planets and play with them without losing. The team behind Eliss also points out that this a great mode for the kids as there is no way to lose, and you can also play it yourself if you want to train your skills or relieve stress. Eliss Infinity is featured in the Humble Mobile Bundle 6 which is still going on, and it was also released onto the Play Store for $2.99. The Play Store price is easily a great buy for what you get, but it’s a much better deal going with the Humble Mobile Bundle 6, so if you can catch in time,(you have about 3 days and 22 hours left)grab it there and get a ton of other awesome games along with it.

Top Android Homescreen August 15th Edition: hEx MnmL

It’s Friday and that means we’re rolling into another hopefully great weekend, and that also means that we have another Top Android Homescreen for you this week, picked fresh from the pages of Mycolorscreen as always, and boy were there plenty of great choices this week. In the spirit of Material Design and a somewhat minimalist style but also a little flashy with the futuristic look, we’re bringing you a homescreen setup that goes by the name of hEx MnmL. This is easily now in our top three favorites, and we like that the menu pops up on the side to reveal a series of the whatever one has as the most used apps. Now granted, some of the apps you use the most could be completely different than what the creator has here, and that’s just fine as you can customize it.

We spoke of Material Design, and that’s because we feel like there was a little bit of material design inspiration here. Just because of the color usage and the way the panel on the side looks. We enjoy the hex design of the buttons and the clock widget in the middle of the screen is awesome. hEx MnmL was created by an individual named David Lopez Pitoko, and hats off to this gentleman as this is one damn Hot homescreen. He uses a collection of apps and widgets to get this look, and you can have the same style if you have the tools needed. The apps you’ll need to install are Nova Launcher Prime, Zooper Widget Pro, and Popup Widgets, and as David describes you’ll need to set your homescreen grid within Nova settings to 6 x 6. There is also a message to “hide everything”, which you’ll need to do so you can make room for the widgets and get that full screen look without the status or nav bars on the top and bottom. If you want to get this homescreen style you can grab the apps that you need from the Play Store, and the files for Zooper as well as the wallpaper used can be picked up from the link posted on Mycolorscreen that David created. If you like the homescreen, make sure to “zoom” the image and hit the love button to give David some credit.

The future of the Nexus lineup continues to be a bit uncertain. Previous rumors said the program would die at the hand of Android Silver, a murmur that was refuted by a Google employee. Xiaomi Can Face Some Serious Penalties If Found Guilty Of Violating The PDPC

Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Commission is currently conducting an investigation on one of the fastest growing smartphone companies in the world. According to the Wall Street Journal, “a user using a Xiaomi device reported receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls from abroad,” said a spokesperson from the Data Protection Commission. In addition to the spokesperson comments, they added “The commission is currently investigating the complaint.” Unfortunately, details about the complaint or anything about the user were not provided.

Earlier this month a security firm called F-Secure looked into the complaint to see if the worlds fastest growing smartphone maker was really sending users data to remote servers in China. Researchers at F-Secure bought a brand new RedMi 1S for the test. They set the phone up, added a contact number to the address book and sent a text message. What they found was surprising. It turns out, that both the phone number and identification number of the phone were sent to a Xiaomi server. Apparently, the server correlates with Xiaomi’s cloud messaging service which sends messages over the internet free of charge. According to Hugo Barra, “We believe it is our top priority to protect user data and privacy, we have decided to make MIUI Cloud Messaging an opt-in service and no longer automatically activate users,” he said on their Google Plus page.

It is unclear if this server has to do with anything with the privacy concerns, but people are still complaining. If any organization violates Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act many, disciplinary actions can take affect. Xiaomi can either stop collecting the data, be forced to destroy the data, or provide access to the data. The last disciplinary act that Xiaomi would have to face if the other options are thrown out the window, would to pay a fine of $1 million Singapore dollars — $800,000 stateside. With a problem like this, Xiaomi’s rise to the top can be ruined if this privacy concern turns out to be true. They have recently become one of the leading smartphone makers in China, beating Samsung, but still behind Huawei and Lenovo. A month ago, this app probably wouldn’t have been on this list at all because back then it was useless aside from the initial set up. • You'll have to pay a premium to remove get rid of obnoxious reminders to buy it.


• There are quite a few bugs that still need worked out so be sure to use the free version first to make sure it works for you.

You can select from your own images or from images that others have posted if you choose to go that route. • People have had trouble playing rented movies on Chromecast.


• It's an endeavor that Google is still working on so there are bugs and flaky issues here and there depending on your device.

• Without the subscription service, all you've really got going is your music collection and playlists.


• Uploading your music to Google Music can take a long, long time.

Unlike their Movies & TV app, Play Music has far fewer issues and a much more stable experience. • Latest updates are a hassle to set up, including uninstalling and re-installing the app.

Hulu Plus normally wouldn’t have made this list because the Android app required a subscription to watch anything. However, they have recently updated their service and now Android owners can watch stuff for free as long as you don’t mind suffering through the advertisements. That makes it a great choice for Chromecast because Hulu does have a pretty decent selection of TV shows to watch.

It's like the Google Search of video streaming.

• A whole bunch of content from a name everyone knows.


• $8.99/month is not a bad price for what you get. A lot of the Netflix original series selections are fantastic.

• Consistently redesigned and updated to fix bugs and improve the UI.

CONS

• As with all apps, some people experience issues both with the app and with the Chromecast depending on your device.


• TV shows and movies can appear and disappear as time goes. Also, new seasons of shows are added much later than you'd find on, say, Hulu.

• Create a home server and stream anything on your hard drive including photos and videos.


• Includes XBMC or Roku style 'channels' for things like Revision 3 and TWiT, and TED.


• With Plex Pass, you can also stream from any cloud storage site like Dropbox or Google Drive.


• Solid features and development means frequent updates.

CONS

• There is a learning curve with this one because you have to set up your own server. It's not overly difficult but more work than many are used to.


• If you don't have a large private collection then you're probably better off with a streaming service like Netflix.


• Doesn't appear to like VPNs that much. Your mileage may vary if you use one.

Plex has always been in the background of the Android video streaming scene but that doesn’t mean it lacks in features. With Plex you can create a home-based streaming server out of your computer and use Plex to stream to your Android device. With Chromecast support, you can stream anything you own to any TV in your house. If you pick up Plex Pass, you get even more features if you want them.
