Xiaomi’s New Flagship Will Be As Thin As Cicada’s Wings And Enter Mass Production In February

Xiaomi has already announced that they’ll hold their press conference on January 15 and that they’ll announce a new flagship at that conference. Everyone assumed we’ll see the Mi4S / Mi5 launched, but the latest reports (including official teasers) say that the Redmi Note 2 will launch at that conference. This could either mean that the Mi4S / Mi5 won’t launch this month or that Xiaomi will launch both of these handsets in a couple of days, we’ll see. Either way, January 15 will be an exciting day for the company and those of you who love Xiaomi products.

Previous teasers, leaks and rumors have been pointing that the device Xiaomi intends to launch, will be extremely thin, as thin as cicada’s wings that is, according to the company. Well, a new research note from KGI indicates that the upcoming Mi4S / Mi5 has the potential to become the worst product simile of the year. KGI also says that previous Xiaomi handsets have been called iPhone clones, which was fairly obvious to grasp judging by their comment. That aside, KGI also says that the device will have a great 13-megapixel camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). Xiaomi Mi4S / Mi5 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch display from Japan Display Inc. which will support an in-cell touch panel. The source says that a 3,000mAh battery will be included in this package and that the phone will enter mass production in February and ship between 12 and 15 million units soon after.

Previous reports suggest that the phone will ship with 3 or 4GB of RAM and an IR blaster on the top. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 or 810 processor is expected to power on this handset and an 8-megapixel snapper will quite probably be available on the front side of this device. Rumors have been all over the place as far as this handset goes, so being precise is kind of hard. Everything will be much clearer on January 15 at 2PM (local time GMT+8), when Xiaomi will finally unveil the handset / new handsets and finally end the rumors that have been coming in like crazy in the last couple of weeks.

CyanogenMod For Android One Officially Announced And CM Build Upgraded From Experimental To Nightly

In terms of CyanogenMod, the news has been quite slow recently. Especially when you consider how busy the news has been for Cyanogen and their ‘other’ operating system, Cyanogen OS. That said, the last week or so has seen significant movement on the community-focused CyanogenMod front. One week ago, the CyanogenMod team launched their official Android 5.0 (Lollipop) ROM in the form of CM12. Unofficial variants of CM12 have been available for some time, but this marked the beginning of the official version. Although, their take on Lollipop was unveiled, it was only released in a nightly form. For those that don’t know means they are rather experimental and not currently considered ‘stable’.

During the official release post from CyanogenMod, the posting did announce that additional devices will be added to the list in due course. This is exactly what happened when a couple of days after the initial announcements, the CM team also added support for the Nexus 6 and LG G3 international variant. At the time, another interesting addition popped up on the CM download page in the way of Android One. A CM build for Android One was also made available, although this was listed as ‘Experimental’. Now, it is worth noting that although nightlies are considered to be experimental, that is not the same as CM listing a download as ‘Experimental’. In this situation, a CM Experimental is exactly that. It is more experimental than a nightly.

Well, a few days have since passed and two major developments have occurred today. The first is that a short while ago CM announced Android One as joining the official CM family. In addition to the formal welcoming of Android One, the CM blog also explained that this is the first time CM has officially supported a MediaTek powered device(s). Following on from this and the second main event that occurred tonight is that a new download has now gone live on the CM download page for Android One. This one (confirming the announcement) shows the build stage moving on from ‘Experimental to ‘Nightly’ and as such marks the first ever official CyanogenMod nightly for Android One.

If you are using an Android One device and fancy giving the new nightly a try then you need to be aware that it is CM11, which is Android 4.4 (KitKat). The Blog post does explain that CM12 is in progress and these CM11 builds will be the standard for Android One (for now) going forward. In spite of these being referred to as nightlies, the announcement does also note that these builds will be updated on a weekly basis (every Sunday). Android Headliner: Why Sony Was Smart To Launch A Stainless Steel Smartwatch 3

When it comes to smartwathes, most of the general public will probably tell you that there is still no point in them owning one for their personal needs if you were to ask, and that would be a genuine response as there is still some room for smartwatches to become truly useful to the majority of people who own a smartphone that could connect to them. For those that do show interest, it seems that most people tend to want something that leans more heavily to the design of a standard watch, but adds the functionality of a smartwatch.

This can be seen from the popularity of offerings like the Moto 360, the LG G Watch R, and the ASUS Zen watch, all which offer leather band straps and metal casings for the watchface. The Sony Smartwatch 3 while it does run Android Wear, has caught its fair share of negativity over the design due to its more sporty look and multiple colored band options. Personally, I like the look that Sony chose to give the smartwatch 3 as it gives me something that feels more accustomed to being taken on exercise outings in a state that sees plenty of precipitation. Plenty of people would have rather had something that looked a little more classy and traditional though, which is why Sony was smart to release a stainless steel model of the smartwatch 3.

The metal watchface chassis and the stainless steel band gives off more of a professional and timeless design than that of the original offering announced by Sony near the Fall of last year. Wearables and smartwatches are also going to be moving towards this trend of finding a good balance of form and function, which the metal design follows more closely. For the majority of the public to be interested in a piece of jewelry like a smartwatch it’ll have to at least look somewhat like a regular timepiece. Sony has obviously realized this and although it came to the party a little bit late, a stainless steel offering is better late than never. The Smartwatch 3 already offers one key component that currently no other Android Wear device offers, which is the built in GPS sensors. Perhaps now that they offer something that could appeal to more people they might see more individuals interested in the device and consider it over other smartwatches which look more like a regular watch.

Another big thing with smartwatches which seems to catch the attention of consumers is the customization aspect, and although Sony did offer a few different colors of the Smartwatch 3 prior to the unveiling of the metal version at CES 2015 this past week, it was still lacking what I feel was a key customization factor that would let people truly personalize their smartwatch 3. Choosing their own third party watch bands. Alongside the stainless steel smartwatch 3, Sony also introduced a new Smartwatch 3 accessory, which is a modular attachment that can be fitted to any smartwatch 3 model, which allows the user to attach any third party watch band they like, whether it be a totally different metal band, or even something made of leather, ripstop nylon, or anything else you find that suits your tastes. This one element gives Sony’s Smartwatch 3 a ton more value as people can place the watchbands they like on their device, not only giving them a little bit of customization, but also giving the Smartwatch 3 another opportunity to appear more like a traditional wrist watch. Pair this modular attachment with the stainless steel model Smartwatch 3 and a nice leather band, and you have yourself one fine looking smartwatch.

Patent Reveals the Past (and Future?) of Google Glass

A patent recently published on the USPTO’s website filed by Google in 2011 shows the idea that Google may have had for Google Glass. One of the diagrams, shown below, shows Google’s idea for the shape of the glasses, the positioning of the camera, and the location of the processor and projector of the glasses.

The glasses are less of the minimalist style we’ve seen recently and more along the lines of protective goggles, which could be a useful feature: if you’ve discovered something awesome enough to video from your head, there’s a good chance you could get hurt doing it. The camera is positioned in the center of the glasses, which makes them look ungainly in the sketches (which, according to most consumers’ thoughts about the current design, doesn’t differ much from the current design.

Something else very interesting about the diagrams is the projection capabilities. The processor is found on one of the glasses’ temples, but both lenses are able to relay information due to there being a projector for each one. This design is an improvement over the current one-eye system, and could give you a chance to diversify the information being relayed to you in each eye.

Based on some of the design quirks, and design improvements, it’s reasonable to believe that this prototype illustrated throughout the patent is a hodge-podge of past and future ideas, and we may be able to expect some of these features, like dual-eyed displays, to be included in future models.

YouTube User Uploads Video Showing Off Android Lollipop And Sense 6.0 For The HTC One M7

While those of with Sony Xperia devices are eagerly awaiting the month of February to come around so we can have our official taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop, those who are still running the HTC One M7 may be looking at getting the update to the latest version of Android sooner than later. Today a video has surfaced online which appears to show off the HTC One M7 running what looks like a near final build of the Android 5.0 software, although the video is short and we don’t get a ton of detail from it, and all we really see that is Lollipop defining is the recents menu with the card stack style recent apps, and the play store icon sitting on the home page. With that being said, the video also shows off the HTC Sense 6.0 software.

Back in November, HTC had made the promise that it was going to push out the update for Android 5.0 Lollipop with the Sense 6.0 software within 90 days of the original Lollipop release to all HTC One M7, and HTC One M8 devices, and we’re nearing that 90 day mark pretty soon here, although still a few weeks away if it stretches to exactly 90 days. There is of the course the chance that it could start hitting devices before the 90 day mark. The user who uploaded this video to YouTube(shown below)seems to already have it, but they don’t mention anything about how they would have gotten a hold of the software, nor do they actually show us the about phone menu which shows us the details on the build version and other information.

It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to see too much more out of the video so we can see a little more of what HTC’s Lollipop builds look like officially. We shouldn’t have to wait too much longer though since the update is likely just around the corner. Verifone Introduces PAYware Mobile e355 POS System That Accepts Multiple Types Of Mobile Payments

Mobile Payments are still not prominent by any means as many local retailers and even bigger national chains have yet to retrofit their POS systems to accept any forms of mobile payments. Thanks to Apple Pay though that will surely soon start to change, and many people as well as us have been saying this for months that we could soon start to see many business accept Google Wallet and other forms of mobile payments now that it seems to be getting quite the hefty push. Even with the businesses that offer payment terminals to accept mobile payments using a tap to pay form of purchasing goods and services, most will only support one specific type or platform.

Verifone is looking to change things and make them more open, by offering merchants a way to support multiple mobile payment platforms with a single mPOS system called the PAYware Mobile e355. Verifone is looking to make mobile payments more flexible with this mPOS solution, and it’s great to see a company that realizes not everyone who shops at an establishment that accepts mobile payments will be using the same type of device that supports a particular platform. The biggest issue on mobile payments for the longest time seemed to have been that consumers wouldn’t want to take the risk of showing interest in mobile payments if there was nowhere to use them, and merchants didn’t want to fork out the money to update their POS systems to support mobile payments if consumers weren’t showing interest. That looks to finally be changing, and with the PAYware Mobile e355 perhaps merchants will step up and cut off another looming issue before it really begins to appear on a mainstream scale, which is the lack of support for multiple mobile payment platforms.

Verifone is touting this as a system that is a flexible, long-lasting device that can outlive smartphone and tablet models, making it a good investment for retailers, merchants, and restaurants where it can be used through multiple mobile device life cycles. The system will support and accept payments of all types, including NFC, EMV, Apple Pay, and the traditional magnetic stripe, and it supports WiFi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It also features an optical barcode scanner. The PAYware Mobile e355 is scheduled to be available for merchants beginning in late summer, so with any luck by the end of 2015 we’ll be seeing many of these payment systems in our favorite places to shop.

Google To Update Translate App For Android With Real-Time Translation Of Spoken Language

While there may not be much use for the capability to translate foreign words in real-time for the average every day smartphone user, there are a handful of ways one can translate words if need be. At least one offering so far called Word Lens claims to offer real-time word translations when you hold the camera on your smartphone up to any words in a foreign language and have it translated to your chosen language in real-time, right in front of your eyes. The Android app can be found in the Play Store and while results may vary from user to user, it provides a pretty good experience should anyone have the need for quick translations in a pinch when they see something in a language they don’t understand.

Google has offered a decent enough solution to those looking to translate words, albeit not in real-time, with their Google Translate app for Android as well as the desktop version that’s baked directly into Chrome, but now according to the New York Times, Google is getting ready to release a new service that can translate words in real-time similar to the way that you can do with an app like Word Lens. Google is also planning an update to the Android ‘Translate’ app that will automatically recognize when someone is speaking another language and translate it into text. It’s unclear exactly how it will work, but if you use Translate, after this update takes root you’ll likely have to configure it to translate popular spoken languages into written text in a language of your choosing so it’s ready when the opportunity arrises. So for example, if you want things translated into English, presumably after the update it would seem logical that you could configure Translate to listen for popular spoken languages and have it translated into written English.

Google is big on multi-language support by offering their apps and services in as many languages as they can, and with these new features coming to their translate app they’ll be making it ever more possible to break down the barrier of language for people with the simple use of technology in our smartphones. There wasn’t any word on when exactly we can expect to see the update to Google Translate, nor were there specific details on a name for Google’s upcoming real-time translation service through the phone screen or a timeframe when an app like that will be available to the public, as “soon” could mean anything from weeks to six months.

More images of Xiaomi Mi5 chassis appear

A couple days ago an image of the forthcoming Xiaomi Mi5′s chassis leaked that seemed to indicate the new smartphone will be very thin when released later this week. That image was a printout describing the chassis with a drawing or image. Today some new images have surfaced of an actual aluminum chassis that are reportedly the chassis for the Mi5.

When the Mi5 launches, which is scheduled to happen later this week on January 15th, it is expected to come with a screen in the 5.5-inch to 6-inch range, although it is not yet known whether it will be a 1080p resolution or bumped up to QuadHD. Likewise, the processor and amount of RAM are not yet known, though many are expecting 3 – 4 GB of RAM and at least a Snapdragon 805 chip.

Look for more leaks to surface over the next few days leading up to the expected January 15th release in China.

Toshiba Demonstrate Their Take On A Glass Wearable, Out Later This Year

We’ve seen many, many devices demonstrated and shown off at CES 2015, or Consumer Electronics Show, over the last week. One of the new products showcased is Toshiba Glass, which is Toshiba’s take on an eye-wearable product, which the company is going to be delivering to enterprise customers later this year. The product is similar to Google Glass in as much as it’s designed to give the wearer a heads up display with whatever they’re looking at, rather than a heads down smartphone or computer. The Toshiba Glass is also a hands free solution, too. One difference between Toshiba Glass and Google Glass is that the Toshiba unit projects the display directly onto the lens. As you can see from the image below, the projection module sits on the side of the glasses frame; it may be removed from the frame but whilst they can be attached to other frames, they do require special lenses: Toshiba use subtle cuts into the glass to reflect the projection.

Toshiba Glass is a tethered device, receiving information and power from another device, which at the CES consisted of a desktop computer, but Toshiba are working on using either a smartphone or a separate box for this. Toshiba were demoing four different scenarios of usage including reading a recipe whilst cooking and using a warehouse indoor map to help the wearer locate inventory. The information presented to the wearer was square rather than rectangular but may be customized depending on what the customer needs; currently, there’s no input method included with Toshiba Glass as this is also in the “to be developed” box.

Toshiba have not given any firm plans as to when their Glass will be ready other than highlight the flexibility of the project, as it may be adapted to suit the particular role in mind. Toshiba have said that they can work the unit for monocular, binocular or different styles, such as goggles and have plans to release a consumer version too, but we’ve no word on the form that this will take (other than presumably it’ll be similar to the product you can see here). Still, Google Glass has been out for more than two years now and it’s interesting to see other companies’ take on a similar product: Toshiba Glass is arguably as different as it is similar. However, from what we’ve seen the hardware is still at a very early stage of development. We’ll keep you in the loop.
