Angry Birds Epic for Android launching June 12 around the globe

Rovio’s next big game in the Angry Birds series is an RPG style game called Angry Birds Epic, launching tomorrow, June 12 for Android.

Angry Birds Epic has been floating around for a couple months now, on iOS in a small test group of countries, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The June 12 launch not only brings the game to Android, but expands available to the rest of the globe. We took a closer look at Angry Birds Epic when it first announced and enjoyed a minimal roll out. Feel free to hit our article for more information, or just hit play on the video below to catch the trailer and get in on the excitement.

Rovio has been riding the wave of success with their feathery little egg hunting characters since the web based launch of the original Angry Birds. The game model of that original has become a standard for many other mobile games as well, providing quick experience levels that a player must pass before they can proceed.

If you have somehow not yet heard of Angry Birds, be forewarned, the original game soaked up more time than Flappy Bird, for many players. In no particular order, you can head back to enjoy Angry Birds, Angry Birds in Space and Angry Birds Star Wars – twice. Not to mention controlling the villains of the series in Bad Piggies, driving racing carts in Angry Birds Go and a bunch more, check them all out on the Google Play Store.

We are hitting the refresh button on the Rovia apps page of the Google Play Store, but it is still a short while before June 12 here on the west coast. Have you begun building your own weapons on your Epic adventure yet?

Sony Xperia Z2 gets its first official taste of CyanogenMod – time to get flashing!

sony xperia z2 aa (5 of 26)

CyanogenMod easily takes the crown in the Android ROM world. The custom ROM is the most popular around, supporting a plethora of smartphones and tablets all over the spectrum. It may take a little while for some devices to get support, though, which is a major source of frustration for the true Android geek.

Sony Xperia Z2 users have been pulling their hair enough, and today they can rest assured that their smartphone is officially supported by CyanogenMod 11. Sony’s flagship handset gets added to the list with the first CyanogenMod 11 nightly, which the team has named “Sirius”.

cyanogenmod nexus 5 boot screen aa 2

The Xperia Z2 is one hell of a smartphone. It fared amazingly in our review and walked away from our drop test without a problem. But we do know software is one huge factor in user experience, and sometimes the official UI and other ROMs simply don’t cut it.

Do keep in mind there is always a level of danger to tinkering with your smartphone. Rooting your device, flashing custom ROMs, unlocking your boot loader and the like can all be the cause of your warranty being voided. Damaging your device is also a possibility, so be sure to know what you are doing before you get flashing.

If you do feel confident enough to flash this CyanogenMod 11 nightly, you can go ahead and get the 260.66 MB file straight from CyanogenMod’s download page. Enjoy, and don’t forget to let us know how it’s working for you.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 finally gets updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat

samsung galaxy note 3 black aa (12)

It’s not often we get to say Verizon devices are early to get an update. Big Red is known for taking its sweet, sweet time rolling out updates. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 users were starting to lose hope by this point, but Verizon has finally come around and given their phablet users a good taste of KitKat.

The biggest US carrier has just started rolling out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 devices. The international and Sprint versions were blessed with this update only some months ago, so we know this isn’t exactly all Verizon’s fault. Though the carrier did take some time, so did Samsung.

What’s new?

No update is complete without its expected bug fixes and performance enhancements. Those are fully present, but also included is a set of new features and UI improvements. The addition of KNOX 2.0 is among the biggest additions, giving Enterprise users great functionality and security.

Knox

KNOX 2.0 includes Dual Persona, TIMA Real Time Kernel Protection, Trust-Zone based ODE, Universal MDM Client, Samsung Enterprise Gateway and Knox Generic VPN Framework.

For those who care, this update also brings support for the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2. In addition, apps like Google Drive, Photos, Play Newsstand and Emergency Alerts App Icon have been either included or upgraded, while S Suggest and Samsung music were removed. This update is really all that we were expecting – no surprises here.

Now that you know exactly what is waiting for you, you can go ahead and check for updates if you haven’t gotten a notification yet. Simply go to Menu > Settings > More > About device > Software update > Check for updates and the magic should be unleashed.

World Cup Brazil 2014 Forza Soccer

Google NowGoogle Now

[Price: Free]

Google Now isn’t an app you’d typically find on a list of best sports apps but Google has been doing great things with their services. One such great thing is adding World Cup information to the voice search so you can just ask your phone for information and it’ll deliver it. It won’t get you the in depth coverage or other fun features of these other apps, but for the casual fan who wants to keep up with what’s going on quickly, it’s a good option.

A perfect little add on to the sports fan repertoire.

PROS

  • You can inquire about a team’s upcoming games, results, and standing in its group.

  • A clean, easy-to-navigate interface.

8.5

Overall, theScore offers a sports solution that few other blogs and websites can touch for all sports, not just football (soccer).

theScore FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014

TuneIn Radio World Cup Brazil 2014TuneIn Radio

[Price: Free]

TuneIn Radio isn’t a sports app, it’s a radio app. However, one thing TuneIn Radio will have is radio stations that will be covering the FIFA World Cup. TuneIn Radio for FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014

World Cup Brazil 2014 WatchESPNWatchESPN

[Price: Free]

If you were to search how to video stream the World Cup, you may have heard that ESPN will be streaming all 64 matches online. Yes, that is true and you can take advantage of that on mobile with the WatchESPN app. It’s a little rough around the edges like practically every other app that streams live sports and long time fans of live streaming sports games already know the breaks of using an app like this.

At least it's better than it was a year ago.

PROS

  • Let's you watch all 64 matches as long as you have a cable provider that supports it.

  • For the majority (more than 50%) of people, the app works pretty well.

  • Chromecast support.

  • When it does work, it works well.

CONS

  • You have to have a cable provider that supports it. You can find a full list on the Google Play page.

  • As with any sports streaming app, a lot of people have a lot of problems with it.

  • Some people are having login troubles.

6.0

Overall, this is the solution for legally streaming games online even if it has its problems.

WatchESPN for FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014

Other ways to watch for free!

It is a worldwide event and some people would rather watch the games for free. If you already pay for cable, the WatchESPN app and website is your best bet because they do cover all 64 games. If you don’t have basic cable, you can still watch a few of the games -including the final game- on ABC by using the good old fashioned rabbit ears. If you don’t mind listening to a Spanish speaking broadcaster, you can also stream a decent number of the games from Univision for free.

LG shares up 11%, analysts believe LG G3 may bring handset division out of the red

lg g3 aa (13 of 22)

When the Samsung Galaxy S5 was first announced at MWC it was immediately met with mixed reception, particularly among consumers who felt it was time for Samsung to make more dramatic changes. Despite this, sales have actually been reasonably smooth for Samsung.

Meanwhile, LG has since announced the LG G3, receiving almost completely positive reception all across the board. As for the actual sales? While it’s too early to say for sure with the handset only fully launched in South Korea, we recently learned that the device was outselling the GS5 in Korea by a factor of more than 3-to-1. It seems that these brisk sales have also had a positive effect on the company’s shares as well.

On May 27th, a day ahead of the G3’s launch, LG closed its shares at 70,300 won ($69.14). Today that price value is at around 78,600 won ($77.31), representing an 11.8% increase in just a little over a week’s worth of trading days. LG currently finds itself at a 52-week high, not bad at all.

the arrival of the LG G3 could signal a move into the black and out of the red for the company

With shares heading in the right direction, at least two different analyst groups believe that LG’s handset business could find itself turning a profit in Q2 2014, the first time they’ve done so in a year. It remains unknown how well LG’s mobile division will actually do, though Korea Investment & Securities’ Lee Seung-hyuk estimates an operating profit of 206 billion won ($20.2 million). Shinhan Investment & Securities’ Soh Hyun-chul has a slightly more conservative figure in mind at 11 billion won ($10.8 million).

Regardless of where LG ends up, the big takeaway is that the arrival of the LG G3 could signal a move into the black and out of the red for the company. We imagine that things could be even better for LG in Q3, when the G3 rolls out globally. With Samsung and Apple controlling 106% of operating profits in the smartphone world, LG may be a long ways from being a real threat to either of these giants, but it’s still hard to not be at least a little impressed with how far LG has come in the last few years.

What do you think of the LG G3 and LG’s recent direction in general? Let us know in the comments.

Final Fantasy VII G-Bike announced, inspired by FF VII mini-game

After announcing their plans for a Final Fantasy VI port back in October of last year, Square Enix teased that Final Fantasy VII could happen ‘eventually’. Of course the vague wording made it clear that this wasn’t on the top of their to-do-list, largely due to technical limitations and space constraints.

While we still have no Final Fantasy VII and likely won’t get the full game anytime in the near future, it seems Square Enix is throwing a sort of consolation prize our way with the announcement of Final Fantasy VII G-Bike.

As many FF VII fans likely remember, there was a racing mini-game that could found at specific points in the story, or could even accessed from the Gold Saucer amusement center. G-Bike is inspired by this experience, essentially bringing us an endless runner type game that has various stages filled with boss encounters, chase sequences and obstacle courses.

Final Fantasy VII G-Bike will be free-to-play and will have in-app purchases for expanding the content. As for when it will arrive? No word on that just yet, though Square promises it will have more details in the near future.

Google, it’s high time for split screen to come to stock Android

samsung galaxy tab 3 8 aa software multiwindow

Google has done a pretty good job of rolling useful features into each new Android version, but there are times when it seems to lag behind. Stock Android is an excellent platform now and it’s becoming harder for OEMs to add a great deal of value with their UIs, but there are still standard inclusions that everyone agrees are desirable that are missing from Android, and a split screen option is one of them.

Android has long had multitasking listed in its “pros” column, but it’s not taking full advantage. As more tablets hit the market and the average screen size of flagship smartphones hits 5 inches the argument for some form of split screen functionality grows stronger. Resolutions are pushing 1080p and beyond, there’s plenty of processing power under the hood, and we know it works.

Come on Google

Multitasking 3

Samsung has multi-window, LG has split view, and Sony has small apps. Individual apps like Skype and Facebook’s chat heads offer floating app functionality. The trouble is that all of these options only support a limited subset of apps and they all handle the same problem a little differently. A standard feature baked into the platform would be a welcome addition and it would definitely improve the Android experience.

OEMs and developers have shown that it can work. Apps already have to deal with a huge range of different resolutions and screen sizes on Android. There may be a few exceptions that won’t play nicely with the feature, and there are phones with smaller screens where it won’t work so well, but these problems are hardly insurmountable. If the OEMs can do a half decent job, you can bet Google could come up with something better.

Where’s the benefit?

Tapping that multitasking button to jump in and out of apps is a pain. Sometimes you want a video playing while you type up an email or quickly reply to an IM. Being able to look something up in your browser without jumping out of what you’re doing can be handy. As we start to use our Android tablets and even smartphones in the same ways we traditionally used our desktops and laptops, not being able to have two, or even more, windows open on screen together is a pain. It’s part of the reason there are still some things we reluctantly fire up the laptop or desktop to complete.

The natural flow

A number of innovations, as the platform has developed, have come from third-party developers. For example, simple apps that repurposed the camera flash as a torch were soon adopted by OEMs and baked into their UIs. On iOS this led to Apple adding a torch app into the platform. If something is useful and a lot of people use it, then it’s exactly the sort of thing Google should be adding as a standard out of the box.

brightest-flashlight

The trouble with leaving it up to third parties can extend beyond simple clunky design. Remember when it was revealed that Brightest Flashlight was selling your location data to advertisers ? That’s a highly rated, extremely popular app in the Play Store, and most people are oblivious to what it is doing behind the scenes. Most free alternatives serve up ads and they’re potentially eating data and battery life that a Google torch wouldn’t be.

Many OEMs offer pre-installed torch apps now, which are comparatively trustworthy, but if Google bundled one with Android we wouldn’t have to go looking. An option in the quick settings menu and on the lock screen is something many of us would use.

If the aim is to keep AOSP as clean as possible then why not just bundle these extras in on Nexus devices and make them available for those who want them, like the Google Now Launcher?

Apple could do multi-window first

If Google drags its heels for too long it looks as though Apple could beat it to the punch.

After WWDC passed without any split screen comment, speculation is focused on split screen in iOS showing up on the next iPad, or possibly even to accompany the long-rumored jump to a larger screen for the next iPhone. It would be frustrating to see it roll out on iOS before Android. Especially since the capability to do it has been in the Android code all along.

You can argue about the need on smartphones, but larger tablets, a category where Android is lagging significantly behind, it’s an obvious thing to add and something a lot of people want.

Google does it better

Don’t make us rely on OEMs or custom ROMs. Don’t leave us to shop around for apps. We don’t want a hacked version of something that Google could do well without the risk of instability or security threats.
