The future of gaming, it seems, is not going to be in the next console or on the next big tablet—it will be in our physical world. At least, it will be partially in our world, existing in an augmented reality. That’s what Google had planned when it started Ingress, a sci-fi game played with real-world landmarks. The game has grown to be hugely popular in its two short years of existence, having already amassed over 10 million downloads. The regular meetups to play the game routinely draw thousands of people—sometimes up to 5,000!
Due to its huge popularity, and the nature of the game, Google’s Niantic Labs head, John Hanke, mentioned the possibility of a large-scale, convention-style meetup for players to attend. He gave no real concrete details, and kept quiet when pressed with questions, but the very fact that he brought it up is promising for all of the Ingress diehards in the world. The LG G3 was widely regarded as one of the all-around best phone of 2014, but the Korean tech giant can’t live off of last years success in 2015. The LG G4, which is due out in May, will hopefully be an improvement over the current aging model, with all of the neat specs of 2015, and the handy features we’ve come to know and love from LG. The device will also increase in size, according to an online twitter tipster named @OnLeaks. The screen will be 5.6 inches, which puts it smack-dab in between the LG G3 and the Note 4, but still in phone territory.
As far as phablets go, although the G4 is pushing the limits of flagship phones’ sizes, LG apparently may have even bigger plans for the second half of the year with a genuine phablet of around 5.8 inches, coupled with its own stylus.

Cars and phones have been courting each other for years, by letting you make and answer calls just by speaking to your vehicle, or play music from your phone seamlessly in your automobile just by using Bluetooth. However, the two crucial aspect of our lives are moving closer and closer to making it an official union, and Pioneer’s AVH-4100NEX is just more evidence of things to come.
The seven inch resistive touchscreen can connect with your iPhone 5x/6x or your Android device running Lollipop (if you’re lucky enough to even have it yet!) to allow you to navigate, play music and make calls. Once you’re connected to your vehicle, every touch on the screen is actually interacting with your device sitting next to you.
The head unit will cost about $700 for the low end, and up to $1,400 on the higher end. As far as future developments go, both Panasonic and Kenwood are due to release similar tech later this year.

This morning, we reported that Pioneer’s aftermarket head units that feature Android Auto were shipping. Many of us were looking at the AVH-4100NEX, as it’s the cheapest. But I’ve seen a lot of people splurging for the 7100 and 8100 models. So we thought it’d be a great idea to compare Pioneer’s three models that are shipping right now. The AVH-4100NEX is going for $700, the AVH-7100NEX is going for $1200, and finally the AVH-8100NEX is going for $1400. So what are the differences here?
All three models feature a 7-inch WVGA (that’s 800×480 resolution) 16:9 display. Not the best display out there, but could be worse. All three also feature an LED backlight, Motorized Display, and last Angle Memory. Surprisingly, the 4100 and 7100 both feature an Anti-Glare Coating while the 8100 model doesn’t.
The biggest differences here come in the Navigation portion. The 7100 and 8100 models come with Nokia’s HERE maps. The 7100 model comes with 8GB of storage for map storage, while the 8100 model comes with 16GB. The 4100 model has no navigation at all, outside of Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
Getting into the audio section, all of these models feature Bluetooth, as well as Sirius XM Satellite radio, iTunes Tagging and HD Radio Multicasting. All three also have voice control through CarPlay and Android Auto.
The biggest differences between the three models here is the Nokia HERE Maps integration. So if you don’t care about that, and just want Android Auto, I’d suggest sticking with the 4100 model as it is much cheaper. While Nokia’s HERE maps are pretty good, if you’re using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, then you really don’t need it, and spend the extra money for it.
Great to see Android Auto head units starting to ship, we should be seeing them coming from the likes of Panasonic, JVC Kenwood and others very soon. And as soon as those start shipping, and are available, we’ll be sure to let everyone know. It’s definitely an exciting time right now for those loving Android and wanting it in their cars. As funny as it may seem, everytime a new device comes out from one of the top brands that is considered to be an exciting device, like Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, a small portion of the fun involves the brand new retail packaging. Likely it comes down to the experience of unboxing a new product, and sometimes companies come up with some rather clever packaging solutions. In the case of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung has paid close attention to detail here and didn’t stop at reinventing their handset design by limiting this mentality to the phones themselves. They reinvented the packaging as well which tells the consumer this is a completely new experience from the inside out, including the boxes that hold everything within.
Unlike last year’s Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S4 from the year prior, the boxes aren’t taking on Samsung’s “natural” design that attempted to evoke a natural wood look on the outside of the box. This time around the packaging is a simple solid white and gives a minimalistic visual appeal, with all new type font for the phone model name and what appears to be raised lettering, with the denotation of what storage size model the phone is at the top. In the case of the two boxes in this image above you can see these are the 32GB models.
While the outside design of the box is less indicative of the changes Samsung has made to their new smartphones than the actual phone, it carries things full circle. Samsung wasn’t just thinking about the phone, they wanted customers to feel like even the unboxing was a fresh experience. The box’s overall shape is still the same of course, and there’s still the implementation of the sleeve that encases everything, but when it comes to looks Samsung has changed things up. Altering the packaging design might be a minor thing, but even the little things matter in capturing the customers attention and Samsung has made sure to do just that. The box is simple and elegant, but ultimately they’re letting the phones inside speak for themselves.

When Microsoft bought the Nokia handset business, one of the terms of the deal was that Nokia cannot manufacturer or sell handsets wearing the Nokia branding until 2016. We have seen Nokia working on unannounced handsets, such as the Nokia 1100, but these cannot be released until 2016 and are almost certainly not production models. However, the terms of the Microsoft deal do not prevent Nokia from supplying technology for another business to be essentially rebranded. And now, Chinese leakster Ubunto Team has released an interesting post on Weibo that discusses plans for a “supreme ‘phone” for prolific smartphone company, Meizu with obvious links to Nokia. Indeed, Nokia are believed to be supplying the hardware and perhaps even the software for the new device with the Nokia 1030 mentioned.
The Nokia 1030 is a rumored Windows 10 smartphone and the follow up to the Nokia 1020, a PureView Nokia device based around Windows Phone 8 and a 41MP rear camera. The rumored Nokia 1030 is reckoned to be based around a 50MP PureView camera including four times optical zoom, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 or 801, 32-bit, quad core processor paired up to 2 GB of RAM and a 5.0-inch 1080p resolution AMOLED screen, but these are rumored specifications and the 1030 may be closer to the Nokia 1020. It’s possible that any link with Meizu and Nokia could use a different handset, or perhaps using other Nokia components.
If Meizu are to use Nokia design and components, and essentially badge engineer the hardware, it will be interesting to see what software the new device runs. Nokia have used Windows Phone for several years, but their recent tablet runs a near-stock Android experience over a 64-bit, quad core Intel Atom processor and has sold very well. Nokia PureView components and Android software would make for an interesting and exciting proposition. As regards the hardware running the show, Windows Phone is a somewhat lighter operating system compared with Android but either would perform admirably over a Snapdragon 800 processor and 2 GB RAM device. If this rumor is accurate, the Nokia 1030 would have mid-range hardware specifications and a superb PureView camera. It could make the device a compact camera replacement. For those of you who have been waiting for the WhatsApp voice calling feature to rollout, it looks like you are in for some happy news albeit with one significant caveat. This is one of the more anticipated features of WhatsApp, and many have been waiting for its release. The feature has been in beta testing with limited invite times, however now, it looks like it is finally ready for the main stage, even though WhatsApp is being tight-lipped on the subject and has not officially announced the release of this new feature for open use. This was offered before, however, the invites to this new feature only lasted a very short time. It would appear that this feature has now been turned back on and may be on for a while.
In order to activate this feature, you will have to update to the latest version of the application from the Google Play Store or you can download the app from WhatsApp via their website. Once you have the WhatsApp application updated you will either need to wait for someone who has the voice calling feature to place a call to you. Once someone has done this, you can close out the app and then restart it. The new voice call option should appear with the chats and contacts tabs.
This new call tab will display the incoming and outgoing calls as well as show any calls that you have missed. It will of course also provide a date and time stamp for each of these. To make a call to a person, simply click on the person in your contacts or from your previous text chats. If you select the contact from a person in your contacts list you will see the usual profile picture message and profile options as well as the option to call the person via WhatsApp. Clicking the phone icon will allow you to make a call using WhatsApp as your method for voice calls. As of yet, it does not appear as if you can use the app to make a normal call via your mobile provider so this may not be a good choice to contact a person if you are in a low data area.
This has been a feature that many WhatsApp users have been waiting for. If you are lucky enough to have this feature activated, do your friends a favor and give them a call to spread the invite love. Keep in mind that while this feature will save you from using your carrier’s minutes, it will instead use data. So if you are on a limited cell phone plan you might want to keep an eye on your data usage. We should also point out there were rumors earlier that there was an invite going around via text message that would reportedly allow you to activate the voice calling features. This has been reported by some as malware and should probably be avoided. For now the only safe way to activate this feature is to have someone call you that already has this feature. Hopefully, we will see this feature turned on for everyone in the near future. This could mean that the gang at WhatsApp are making their final preparations, so look for this feature to be offered in an official capacity in the near future.

If you like some granular control over synced accounts, you probably ran into a little roadblock with Android 5.0. If you wanted to manually sync items in one of your accounts, the button to do that was missing. Well, at least, sort of. In its place was "cancel sync," even though there was nothing to cancel. That should have only been present after initiating a sync manually with the "sync now" option.

It seems like portable chargers are getting smaller, cheaper, and larger capacity all the time. One of the bigger problems with the latest versions of Android software over these last few months since Android 5.0 Lollipop was released to the public, was the issue people were having with leaking memory. Normally Android’s memory woes are few and far between, but with Lollipop came about the memory leak bug which was more widespread than most would have hoped and the problem was bad enough that it quickly moved towards the top of the Google issue tracker. With the memory leak affecting more than a handful of users who had updated to Lollipop, people were seeing more constant app crashes and problems with re-launching apps because the memory would fill up but wouldn’t automatically clear out.
With the launch of Android 5.1 now upon us and the software going out to some Nexus devices, the memory leak issue would presumably begin to feel like an afterthought. However, In the last day or two it was discovered that Android 5.1 also had its own memory leak bug which was of course quickly reported to the people at Google via the issue tracker. While this is likely not what users were wanting to find in moving from a software version that already had problems with leaky memory, the good news is that Google seems to have internally fixed the issue.
The slight downside is that Google isn’t rolling things out just yet and they haven’t mentioned when they’ll begin pushing out the software fix for those users who are still experiencing the memory leak problems. Google states on the issue tracker that the problem is fixed internally, but they don’t have a timeframe for a public release, so users could end up having to wait another week or two, perhaps longer, before the software patch makes its way to devices being affected.
