Opera Software, developer of the popular Opera browser you may be familiar with, has announced a new Opera Devices SDK that uses a Blink-based TV rendering engine to bring the platform to Sony TVs that use Android Lollipop for an Android TV solution. Opera indicates that the advanced HTML5 capabilities used to power premium content will also enable open Internet browsing on Android TV devices using a fully-functional Opera web browser on the TV that can be controlled using a standard remote control.
During CES 2015, Opera Software will be showing how the Opera Devices SDK works, including their Pepper Plugin API, to make use of Android TVs more secure. The use of plug-ins means developers can bring a variety of applications to market, through a special Opera TV Store. The use of HTML5 means developers will be able to re-use code used for other platforms in developing versions capable of running on new Opera powered Android TV devices. According to Aneesh Rajaram, senior vice-president for TV & Devices with Opera Software,
“HTML5 has proven to be the harmonizing factor in a complex and fragmented industry with many operating systems, regional standards and plug-in frameworks. When our TV partners announced their Android plans, Opera’s latest TV solutions were a natural fit.”
Opera works with a wide variety of manufacturers of TVs, set-top boxes, and Blue-ray disc players, like Sony, TiVo, Samsung, Swisscom, TCL and Sharp. Even though the new Opera Devices SDK will originally launch on Sony manufacturer Android TV devices, these other companies may release their own devices throughout 2015.
