Godville – Indie app of the day

What is Godville?

Godville is what is called a Zero Player Game (ZPG). That means the game plays itself and will continue to play itself whether or not you decide to do anything. It’s currently free in the Google Play Store with in app purchases.

Here’s how the game works. In Godville you keep watch over an adventurer. The adventurer “tweets” (their verbiage) what he’s doing all the time which makes it essentially look like a text-based game. The hero will make decisions, level up, and do his own thing regardless of what you do. You play the part of god in this quirky little universe and you can send “signs” to the adventurer to do things. Of course, whether or not he listens is entirely up to him.

This game is a lot of fun but not the same kind of fun you get from other games. To make up for the fact that you don’t have to do anything, Godville employs a lot of witty banter and quirkiness. You can command the adventurer but you can also punish and reward him as well. You can also keep an eye on your stats, the adventurers stats, and other managerial things. This of it like a minimal, comical version of the classic PC game Black and White.

Godville review

It's like a hilarious and minimal Black & White.

PROS

  • It's a ZPG (Zero Player Game) so the game literally plays itself without you being required to do anything.

  • Witty, quirky banter mixed with the independent streak of the adventurer will make you laugh quite a few times.

  • Simple text-based gaming means the game is small and should work on pretty much any device.

  • Free to play with in app purchases.

  • It's more fun than it looks.

CONS

  • If you don't like text adventures or games with no action, you won't like this one.

8.5

Overall, Godville is fun and hilarious. It employs a different kind of game mechanic and it’s one that is perfectly suited for lazy people. Those who are interested can download the game free of charge so there’s no harm in trying it out.

Powermod releases chargers with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology

powermod_quick_charge_2-0_products There are not many devices on the market that take advantage of Quick Charge 2.0 technology, but that is in part due to the chargers are not being available. The only device on the market with a corresponding charger is the Moto X (2014) and DROID Turbo. On its way, though, is one for the HTC One (M8). Due to the limited availability, Powermod has taken the matter into its own hands by releasing two chargers that have Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology. The in-vehicle chargers costs $19.95 and the wall charger is $29.95. These prices are cheaper than what you would find elsewhere.

Digital assistant Amazon Echo announced

amazon_echo

Amazon has released a new device that puts a unique twist on the digital assistant market. Rather than existing as a piece of software only on a smartphone or tablet, the Amazon Echo puts that technology on a piece of hardware ready to be deployed around the house. The device is always on and will respond to a wake word to provide information, answer questions, or even fill a room with music.

The Amazon Echo comes equipped with seven microphones that employ enhanced noise cancellation and far-field technology. This means users can speak in a normal voice from anywhere in a room. Speaking is important because the device is voice-activated and according to Amazon, will learn speech patterns, vocabulary and personal preferences making it smarter over time.

Besides the voice input capabilities, Amazon also built the Amazon Echo to delivery crisp, clear sound with a nice immersive bass response. Users will be able to access services like Amazon Music, iHeartRadio and TuneIn for musical content. The Amazon Echo is also Bluetooth enabled so users can stream content from sources like Spotify, iTunes or Pandora using a phone or tablet.

Amazon is also releasing an Amazon Echo app for multiple platforms that can be used to manage alarms, create shopping lists and perform other functions.

Amazon is only selling the Amazon Echo by invitation. You can hit the source link to request an invitation. Amazon Prime members can get the Amazon Echo for $99 while the normal price is $199.

Samsung to launch new phone series after Galaxy A arrival

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Front_Samsung_Logo_TA

We all know that Samsung has a lot of devices on the market. In the last few months, the company did start to condense its range of tablets. That is not likely to happen with its phones, but Samsung will take a look at how they are named. On the heels of the Galaxy A arrival, Samsung is going to introduce another series with the single letter approach.

The logical series to assume that this is for would be whatever falls under Project Zero, Samsung’s next flagship.

Motorola Solutions making phones for public safety employees

motorola_solutions_lex_700

Just because Motorola Solutions is separate from the Motorola we all know all love doesn’t mean they cannot make phones. In fact, Motorola Solutions makes more than one phone. You likely have not seen any of them because they are not for the consumer electronics crowd. These phones are for public safety employees like police officers, firefighters and EMTs. So it is not surprising that the design is… tough. These phones are no Moto X or DROID Turbo in terms of looks. Durability is what is at stake.

The phone up top is the LEX 700. It is big and it is durable. And it runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Motorola Solutions’ PremierOne software. A dual-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz runs this beast. Remember, public safety employees are using this. At most, they will be using it to communicate and locate quickly. The LEX 700 and devices like it do not require Snapdragon processors and 3GB of RAM to get things done.

Now aren’t you thankful for the specifications we have today? Or do you still demand more? Let us know in the comments.

Sony Xperia Z3, Z2, and Z3 get AOSP version of Lollipop

sony_xperia_z1_z2_z3_android-5-0-lollipop

In the image above, you are looking at a version of Android 5.0 Lollipop running on select Sony devices. It is the AOSP version of the operating system’s latest version shown on a Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2, and even the Xperia Z1. Owners of those devices (unlocked) can go ahead and check it out.

The Xperia Z Series is scheduled to receive an official version of Android 5.0 Lollipop from Sony in early 2015. In Sweden, though, Sony has the 3Beta program that allows Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact owners to test drive Sony’s Lollipop software ahead of everyone else. This allows the company to understand how its software is performing in reality.

Huawei TalkBand B1

Huawei has announced the TalkBand B1, a fitness tracker with an integrated Bluetooth earpiece, will be available from GetHuawei.com, Newegg.com, Amazon.com and Fry’s Electronics in the U.S. beginning November 14th. The tracker will initially be available only in true black at a suggested retail price of $129.99 with more colors to be release during the upcoming year.

Nexus 6 heads to 12 new countries via Google Play, still can’t pre-order it (yet)

Nexus 6 Hero Image Cloud White LARGE

Google (and Motorola) have a hard enough time keeping up with demand for the Nexus 6 here in the states, so we’re hoping opening up availability to 12 new countries wont further hurt our chances picking one up. But soon, the Nexus 6 will be available for sale in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. We say “soon” because the phone hasn’t officially launched anywhere yet and even when it comes to pre-orders, the Nexus 6 is still listed as “coming soon” in the 12 new regions.

Google says the Nexus 6 will be hitting carriers like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular later this month. If we had to guess, that’s where the majority of their stock is going, considering not too much people have the money to throw down on a $650 smartphone.

Google’s Nexus 6 prepping for release in more countries

google_nexus_6_screen_trio

It is a familiar refrain from around the globe whenever Google releases something new, whether it be software or hardware, the frustration with the U.S.-centric release schedules. The new Nexus 6 smartphone is no exception as early adopters are just now trying to get their orders in for the device in the U.S. while buyers in other markets merely look on. Hopefully that wait won’t be long as Google has announced availability for several countries and though no dates are indicated, it appears the Nexus 6 will be coming soon.

According to Google, the additional countries where the Nexus 6 will be available include:

  • Australia

  • Belgium

  • Canada

  • France

  • Germany

  • India

  • Italy

  • Japan

  • Netherlands

  • Spain

  • Sweden

  • United Kingdom

Once the devices are available, there is no telling how long the stock will last, but it is some hope for buyers around the globe who want the Nexus 6 in their pockets as quickly as possible.

Primecast app puts Amazon Prime Instant Video content on Chromecast

primecast_app_icon

Are you hooked into the Amazon ecosystem? Then take a look at Primecast. Then take a look at Primecast. No, it is not an official Amazon app; however, it will do something that the company would seemingly never dare to do. Primecast mirrors content from Prime Instant Video on Chromecast.

Amazon’s video streaming service only received Android support within the last two months. Jeff Bezos & Co. are very slow to make its services available on many platforms. Why? So you crack and purchase an Amazon device. We highly doubt Chromecast support will arrive come directly from Amazon due to its direst competitor — the Fire TV Stick. Primecast is an easy go-to solution for just $2.99.

Amazon Echo is an always listening ‘smart’ Bluetooth speaker that’s part Siri, part Google Voice Search

Amazon Echo

Available only by invitation, earlier today Amazon took the wraps off their latest hardware project a Bluetooth speaker and voice recognition system they’re calling Echo. It’s actually pretty interesting. The Amazon Echo mimics the always-listening functionality found in Motorola’s smartphone (or charging iPhones) and allows you to speak commands, search queries or create lists by speaking voice commands.

Because have to re-speak commands is never fun, the Echo is actually outfitted with 7 microphones to hear you no matter where you are in the room — near or far. And it’s smart too. Because it’s internet connected, Amazon says the Echo will continually learn, adding additional functionality over time. As of right now, here’s what the Echo can do:

  • News, weather, and information: Hear up-to-the-minute weather and news from a variety of sources, including local radio stations, NPR, and ESPN from TuneIn.

  • Music: Listen to your Amazon Music Library, Prime Music, TuneIn, and iHeartRadio.

  • Alarms, timers, and lists: Stay on time and organized with voice-controlled alarms, timers, shopping and to-do lists.

  • Questions and answers: Get information from Wikipedia, definitions, answers to common questions, and more.

  • More coming soon: Echo automatically updates through the cloud with new services and features.

Amazon Echo features

The Echo will also have a companion app for Android devices to help manage things like alarms, shopping lists, music and all that stuff listed above. There’s no solid release date, only a vague “in the coming weeks” launch was given. Pricing is $200 or $100 for Amazon Prime members, but only for a limited time and you’ll need to request and invite here .

Overall, it’s not a bad speaker for what it offers, of course we’ll need to hear how well it performs in person before we pull the trigger on a purchase. What do you guys think?

Primecast Puts Amazon Instant Video Where It Belongs: On Your Chromecast

unnamed (17) After literally years of waiting, Amazon finally gave Android users access to their purchased movies and television shows on non-Kindle Fire devices. And lo, the heavens did open and a chorus of angels did declare, "where's the Chromecast support?" With Amazon promoting its Fire TV platform and a new Chromecast competitor of its own, it looks like we might have an even longer wait for that particular feature. But one enterprising Android developer went and made it for you.

Primecast Puts Amazon Instant Video Where It Belongs: On Your Chromecast was written by the awesome team at Android Police.
