The launch of Android One is looming. On September 15, Google could finally be launching its approach to bring low-cost devices to emerging markets. Invites for an event being held in India have been sent out and it is expected that Android One is launched on the aforementioned date. This lines up perfectly with a previous report that Android One’s launch was coming at some point in September.

Samsung has announced the expansion of its Smart Home family just in time for IFA 2014. The new products are designed to benefit a home with improvements in security and energy management. Everything from digital door locks to smart plugs will be a part of Samsung’s new Smart Home portfolio that also includes third party devices. The new hardware is capable of being controlled from a smartphone or tablet and even with voice commands.
The updated Smart Home portfolio will be fully detailed and showcased at the Samsung Developer Conference in November. For now, the Smart Home SDK is currently available to developers.
Hit the break for the full press release.
Samsung Expands Smart Home Portfolio at IFA 2014
Innovative new products and services make the Smart Home a reality
London, UK – 1st September, 2014 – Samsung Electronics today announced the expansion of its Smart Home portfolio at IFA 2014. The new range of services and products are designed to increase home safety, improve energy management, adapt to in-home location and operate by voice command, demonstrating Samsung’s commitment to making the Smart Home of the future a reality today.
“We are excited to deliver a Smart Home experience which will make our customers’ lives easier, with innovative products that help everyone’s day to day routine, such as managing home security and energy consumption,” said Robert King, Vice President of Consumer Electronics at Samsung UK & Ireland. “We are thrilled to be leading the way in making the Smart Home possible for our customers worldwide.”
The Samsung Smart Home puts convenience at the heart of its ethos. With the expansion of its Smart Home portfolio which includes third party devices, the service is designed to cater for all aspects of the modern smart home, from digital door locks to IP cameras and smart plugs. These devices work with Samsung Electronics’ entire product range to provide a complete Smart Home solution.
Samsung Smart Home – Enabling a Smarter Way of Living
Samsung’s safety services let people monitor their homes by connecting digital door locks and IP cameras so that they can remotely and securely assess who is entering and exiting their home. For example, if the digital door lock is opened while you are away, a notification will be sent to your registered smartphone. From here the Home View function can be launched on the companion mobile app to check the IP cameras and see whether other family members have returned home safely or if there is something to be concerned about.
Energy management is a forefront of many people’s minds. The Samsung Smart Home service monitors the amount of electricity used by energy intensive appliances such as air-conditioners and displays the expected cost of the energy consumption. People can then monitor their electricity usage, whether daily or monthly, and set new targets to help reduce bills. It is also possible to set a monthly maximum electricity allowance for each device and appliance and when the limit approaches a pop-up is sent to the person.
New location awareness services enable devices in the home to automatically turn on via location recognition technology. For example, the lights and air conditioner will switch on automatically when you approach your home, meaning that you can return to a comfortable living environment.
The final service to be announced creates a more convenient home. People can activate their air conditioner, robot vacuum cleaner and Smart LED lights anytime, from anywhere through S Voice, the voice recognition service embedded in the wearable Gear series as well as via Galaxy smartphones. A number of detailed voice commands have been preloaded to let you give specific instructions to a range of devices. Samsung plans to expand the compatibility of its Smart Home offering to products from other devices and appliance manufacturers alongside additional Samsung products in order to create a seamless home experience.
Building an Open Smart Home Ecosystem
Samsung is pioneering to make the connected home, and by extension, the Internet of Things possible through work to shape industry standards concerning Smart Home services.
In July 2014, Samsung and Intel played an integral role in launching the Open Interconnect Consortium, which, alongside its founding members and future partners, aims to ensure connectivity standards. As part of Samsung’s continuous efforts to accelerate the growth of Samsung Smart Home ecosystem, Samsung will unveil the Smart Home SDK later this year which will enable partner companies to develop hardware devices supporting the Samsung Smart Home.
In addition, Samsung recently acquired SmartThings, creator of the leading open platform for the Smart Home and consumer Internet of Things. With resources and support from Samsung, SmartThings will continue to accelerate the development of a truly open ecosystem for connected homes. Samsung will also open its products to developers and partners on the SmartThings platform to help create exciting experiences for the connected home. More details will be shared at the Samsung Developer Conference to be held November 11-13 in San Francisco.
“We plan to build a truly open smart home ecosystem by actively incorporating a variety of services and platforms into the cloud, as well as by opening up Samsung’s platform to developers,” added Robert King. “The Samsung Smart Home will continue to evolve through the development of new services that enable people to enjoy their lives in smart ways.”

Asus CEO Jerry Shen recently spoke at a media briefing in advance of this week’s IFA 2014 trade show and revealed the company’s upcoming smartwatch device, the ZenWatch, would sell for less than $199. Shen also indicated the device will come with voice recognition for English speakers when initially launched in October. Chinese voice recognition will come later, hopefully before the end of the year.
Shen also revealed the ZenWatch would be capable of working alone or paired with an Android smartphone. He said pairing the device with a smartphone would enable additional functionality, but did not elaborate. Shen also revealed the device would come in one size only.

The whole world gives Android the cold shoulder when speaking of privacy and security. It’s often said viruses and attackers can get all over your phone and take all your information. It has been proven time after time that Apple’s hardware and software are far from being foolproof.
Last weekend was the perfect example of the misunderstanding revolving the tech community. Nude photographs of popular celebrities were posted all over the web, originally shared via 4Chan. This event was cleverly named as “The Fappening”, a day that will forever be remembered in the tech world.
The hackers mention over 100 celebrities were affected, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Kirsten Dunst, Selena Gomez and many others.
The trouble for celebrities is that much of their personal information is not so secret.
Metadata does show most of these images were taken with Apple devices, but iOS seems to be the standard OS used by most celebrities.
Experts believe this could have been due to poor password choices or a vulnerability in one of Apple’s services. Others, like Rik Ferguson, believe the hacker probably already knew the affected users’ iCloud-linked emails, then simply used the “I forgot my password link” and answered a security question (which are often public knowledge for celebrities).
These are all assumptions, of course. The main argument here is that this person(s) claim to have pulled the images out of iCloud. We don’t intend to blindly bash Apple and fanboy our way into an attack towards the iPhone maker.
We just want people to know the claims that Android is less secure than Apple are, in most cases, pure bogus. Every platform has its defects and vulnerabilities, just like its strengths. Hackers have many ways of reaching you, but you can make it insanely hard on them if you know your tech.
Many users are not vey strict with their password standards, for example. There’s a list of about 500 most-used passwords in the world. Can we really not get more creative? Also, we must consider our cloud services’ nature and know how to use services.
We are learning far too slowly to take care of our online persona. For example, even if you’ve deleted an image from your smartphone, it’s still out there somewhere on the internet...
We also don’t want to turn around the blame and say these celebrities are responsible for this. Of course, this was an attack and no one should access your information (even if your passwords is “123456789″). All we are saying is: in a world were information is worth more than possessions, we need to learn how to protect our private data.
Meanwhile, Apple says it is actively working on this issue and some patches have even been implemented, making iCloud more secure.
HTC’s rumored Nexus tablet has gotten all kinds of leaks and rumors. We know the general specs, but today’s new leak brings forth an accessory (among multiple) we had never heard of before. It seems Google and HTC are putting together a keyboard case to make the HTC Volantis/Flounder a much more productive gadget.
A couple images of the product have emerged, showing only the general outline of the keyboard folio. The source gave enough details to get a general idea behind this accessory, though. The foldable area will turn into a triangular shape, making it a stand for your tablet to lay on.
When the keyboard is not in use, the tablet is meant to lay on top of the keyboard area, making it look like a more traditional case/folio. The unit will reportedly run on Bluetooth 4.0 and a 450 mAh battery, also featuring an NFC chip for easy pairing.
The device’s measurements are 228 x 320 x 5 mm, with keys only raising 3 mm high. These numbers seem reasonable for a 9-inch tablet, which is the size we are expecting the HTC Nexus device to measure in at.
This is looking to be a great keyboard for those who want to take full advantage of the rumored tablet. The device will be very productive at 9-inches (3:4 ratio), and the accessory can work both as a regular cover and a keyboard dock. Not to mention the battery and other useful features.
If even half of these features are true, this case will make for a must-have accessory for any HTC Volantis user. I would certainly sign up for one, but we just have to wonder how the price tag will look. It definitely doesn’t look like a cheap product, guys.
Samsung was all about Smart Home last CES, and their acquisition of SmartThings really proved their conviction. Their new home automation service presented some great features, granting the ability to control appliances and other products via mobile devices and TVs. It was a great project, but today’s announcement has taken things up a notch.
Samsung’s Smart Home expansion includes a new set of services and products with a focus on safety, energy management, location awareness and smarter, more connected ways of living in the home of the future. For example, one can now connect to digital locks and IP cameras, helping you keep an eye on your home and every area in it.
New energy management features allow you to keep an eye on how much energy certain electronic devices use. One can even set limits and get notifications when these electronics surpass their energy cap.
The location awareness feature may be one of the most exciting, bringing automated actions based on where you are. How about turning on your AC when you get to a few blocks from your home? Maybe you would like to turn on the lights when you get to the front lawn. This is all possible with Samsung Smart Home.
Android is Smart Home’s backbone, and most Samsung mobile device do run our favorite mobile OS. Not to mention, one of the new features does include Samsung S Voice support. Users will be able to control their homes and appliances via Samsung’s voice-operated digital assistant, present in most Samsung smartphones and Gear devices.
Samsung plans to let Smart Home grow with the rest of the industry. A Smart Home SDK will be released later this year. If enough developers jump into this ship, Samsung’s automation investments will find success. We will see more during IFA, this week, so stay tuned!
VoxyPad is a real time collaboration tool that allows you to connect with another person and work on virtually anything. Collaborations take place over what the app refers to as “calls” and allows you connect with another person. It’s currently free to use.
The interface is pretty simple. There’s a large space that covers most of the screen where content you and your collaborator work on can be seen by both parties. Below that is a toolbar that allows you to do things like switch input tools (handwriting, text, etc), insert images, and access other tools that you can use. You can also use the toolbar to open websites and share files on cloud storage. You can even use voice if you need to.
It works fairly well over T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network and over WiFi but we imagine there will be hiccups here and there based on your connection speed. Some tools and edits are synced on command while others are synced automatically. In our tests and the video above, things seem to work pretty well when it comes to collaboration.
You can use this for a number of things. The app description recommends things like making customized photo albums and the like. We can’t see this being used as a serious productivity tool but it does have a solid foundation to grow into one.
Collaboration made easy.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal posted an article discussing why Google removed a smartphone app called “Disconnect Mobile” from the Play Store. Google stated that the app violated a policy prohibiting software that interferes with other applications. Disconnect Mobile, which was downloaded more than five thousand times in the five days before it was removed, aims to disrupt other applications from collecting data about the user and the device it’s installed on. Disconnect, the developer, spent a year and $300,000 developing the app. The company’s co-founder, Casey Oppenheim, writes that the business was careful to build the product according to Google’s rules. He’s subsequently hit out at Google for writing a rulebook that is so vague they have the power to ban any app in the store. Casey states that, “There is no reason why you shouldn’t have the same degree of control over the computer you have in your pocket as you do over your computer on your desktop.”
Disconnect Mobile is a form of VPN or virtual private network, which is essentially a secured pipe between your device and their servers. Their servers directly interact with the Internet at large and strip out much of the tracking information present in your Internet stream before it’s piped to your device. The developers explain that this reduces the threat of malware, identity theft, search and browser history tracking. They also claim that their VPN may reduce bandwidth consumption and improve performance. As you might expect, removing the information that is collected by Android does absolutely interfere with other applications on the device. It’s a neat and scalable business, but let’s not forget that this is a business.
Casey wrote a long blog post discussing how Disconnect Mobile was removed from the Google Play Store. He hits out at Google for their ability to “arbitrarily and unilaterally ban any app from the world’s dominant mobile operating system (78% of total smartphones run Android).” He also gives direct support for Blackphone’s PrivatOS and CyanogenMod as alternative Android distribution platforms “that support privacy and security.” Disconnect Search is the primary search engine for PrivatOS. Casey speculates that Google blocked Disconnect Mobile because it mistook it for an ad-blocker, citing the APIs (application programming interfaces, a standardised set of functions to help developers create applications that access features or data of an operating system or application). He is careful to explain that Disconnect Mobile focuses on “protecting people from invisible tracking and sources of malware, and all too often these threats come in the form of advertising,” going on to highlight that many advertisers are increasingly spreading malware via “malvertising.”
Whilst it looks like Disconnect’s application has been put back up into the Play Store, Casey’s blog is a less than friendly shot at the search engine. I cannot help feeling cynical that Disconnect used the ban as something of a PR exercise. I do acknowledge that there is a threat of advertising, but I am not sure that advising users to go off-Play Store for applications is necessarily sensible. Simply telling users to use their app, which by the way has limited bandwidth so you’ll need to pay if you want full access, smacks of being opportunistic.

Just under a week ago, I penned an article about Xiaomi stopping sales of the Mi3 handset in India after just five weeks. I cover Xiaomi’s use of “hunger marketing” in this article, that is, the manufacturer sells their successful handsets in relatively small batches under the story that they are only a small company and are unable to afford to manufacture large quantities of smartphones as many of their competitors do. Hunger marketing is based on the premise that absence makes the heart grow fonder: keeping consumers waiting for a desirable product works well in the short term, but eventually people get fed up waiting and buy elsewhere. Xiaomi’s pre-registration process involves signing up onto a waiting list to have a chance of picking up a handset when Xiaomi release a batch, usually with no warning. Xiaomi are playing the dangerous game of massaging the natural order of supply and demand, by restricting supply to keep demand artificially high. However, anybody who has studied economics will tell you that anything kept artificially high is only a temporary measure. I prefer a simpler explanation: the higher it is, the harder the fall. I suspect that the truth will be somewhere between the two!
Compare and contrast with Asus, who have a more traditional approach to selling handsets. Asus manufacture their devices in large numbers and if they were to ever sell out of a particular product, it would be because they are unable to manufacturer it fast enough to keep up with demand. Recent Asus’ sales figures have been higher than Xiaomi – Asus sold 40,000 Zenphone devices in four days through their exclusive online partner, Flipkart, compared with Xiaomi’s sales of 20,000 in three days. Now these headline statistics may be misleading because Xiaomi sold out of their handsets whereas Asus have kept quiet (and perhaps have another 40,000 sitting in a warehouse somewhere). Is selling 100% of your stock, but a lower number, better than selling 50% of your stock but a higher number of boxes? That’s a complicated question and there’s not much benefit in going into the economics of it. In short, “maybe” is the correct answer!
Holding flash sales of limited quantities of handsets isn’t just a feature of the developing smartphone markets. Apple almost certainly have bought the necessary manufacturing capacity to keep stores supplied with their new iPhone models but choose to restrict demand for a few weeks. Google managed to restrict the supply of most of their launched products. In some cases the reason is because of unexpected high demand – here’s looking at the original Nexus 7. In other cases, it might be because of failures in the ordering system (glancing at my much loved Nexus 4), but I’m sure that most manufacturers won’t pass up on the opportunity to create extra interest in their highly desirable product that’s difficult to get hold of, even if only for the short term.
Let me ask the question to our readers. What do you think? How long will you hold out for a product or device that’s hard to get hold of? A fortnight, a month or longer? To what lengths might you go to pick up that next device?
