Nextbit Robin With Verizon Support Hits Kickstarter Tomorrow

Kickstarter’s darling device, the Robin from Nextbit, now supports Verizon. Starting tomorrow on the official Robin Kickstarter page, you can pick up a US-only, Verizon-supporting Robin device, for the same pre-order price of $349. For those who get to the page super early, an early bird edition will be available for just $300, but the deal is limited to the first 300 backers.

Nextbit hit Kickstarter with a goal of $500,000, and thanks to countless attention from tech media, including us, they have shot well over their goal now sitting at over $1 million in backing.

You may be asking yourself, what the heck is a Robin? As of today, the device’s claim to fame is its cloud-focused storage. Instead of utilizing a microSD card, then inevitably running out of storage, Robin loads and offloads information, including applications, as it sees fit. It features storage that is “smart,” making way for things as you need it. For more detailed information on how this works, view the Kickstarter page linked below.

So, is a Robin that supports Verizon what you have been waiting for? Are you confident in backing it now?

Yes, It’s Incredibly Easy to Change Bands on the Huawei Watch

For everyone who ordered a Huawei Watch, or were at least thinking about it, you should know that removing and replacing the bands on the watch is incredibly easy. Just as we saw on the Moto 360 (2nd Gen), Huawei has placed little tabs on the pin mechanism that locks into the watch’s lugs. This means you no longer need a tool to remove the preinstalled bands, which may have led a few folks to damaging the back of their smartwatch devices.

The Huawei Watch features standard 18mm band support, which is a very widely supported size of watch band. If you need a new band, you can head over to Amazon, your local jewelry store, or any other place that sells watch bands and you will definitely be able to find an 18mm band for your device.

Sadly, if you had a Moto 360 device from last year, those bands will not fit, as they are 22mm in size. A little too big for the Huawei Watch.

If you need a couple suggestions for a 3rd-party band, E3 offers a great lineup of fancy leather bands, Clockwork Synergy has a few options, and of course, Amazon has a plethora of straps to choose from; leather, metal, mesh, etc.

Happy tinkering.

Deal: Pay What You Want for This $1,700 Mobile Developer Bundle

You all know the Humble Bundle, right? It’s a collection of games that comes out every month or so with a pay-what-you-want scheme that allows you to get a bunch of popular titles for a few bucks, while donating to charity or developers at the same time. It’s awesome. We write them all up because cheap games and donating to charity are a win-win combo.

In the DL Deals store, we have a similar bundled offer for a Mobile-First Developer’s Bundle that lets you pay what you want and get 10 different courses to help turn you into the next coding wizard. It also helps fund the Creative Commons, a group “who develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation.”

With this bundle, you get courses that will teach you Android development from scratch, building mobile games in Unity 3D, creating native apps, monetizing them, and how to get the most out of Lollipop development. The value of the entire package sits at around $1,700, but you can currently get the whole set for around $9.

Ability to Stream Android Gameplay to YouTube Coming Soon

Announced today during Japan’s Tokyo Game Show, the ability to livestream Android gameplay to YouTube is coming “soon.” Ability to do so will come via an update to YouTube Gaming, as mobile gaming popularity has picked up tremendously in all parts of the world.

This same functionality has hit devices from Samsung thanks to its proprietary software, but with Google and YouTube looking to capitalize on mobile gaming, and make YouTube Gaming a bit more desirable in the eyes of those who use Twitch, this move should allow for almost all newer Android devices to stream gameplay.

As of right now, there is no set date for when we can expect this functionality, but “soon” is better than nothing.

What game should I stream first?

Amazon Announces 4K Fire TV, Game Edition, and Fire TV Stick With Voice

This morning, Amazon went H.A.M. on a bunch of new Fire products. They introduced us to new Fire tablets (more here) and a couple of revamped Fire TV products. Most notably, we have the brand new Fire TV with 4K support, best-in-class WiFi, built-in Alexa (the brain behind Echo), and a microSD slot. Along with the new Fire TV, Amazon also announced a new Fire TV Stick with a voice remote (pictured below), so that Stick owners can also get into the Alexa spirit.

As a recap, the Fire TV is like an Apple TV or Google’s Nexus Player. It’s a box that attaches to your TV, giving you access to your favorite streaming services (Netflix, HBO, Spotify, Pandora, etc.), apps, and even games. This new model has 75% more processing power (64-bit MediaTek quad-core processor), is 4K-ready, has 802.11ac MIMO WiFi, SD card support up to 128GB outside of its 8GB onboard storage, Mayday screen sharing, Audio from Dolby, and Alexa, so you can ask it all sorts of voice commands (weather, play music, etc.).

As for the new Fire TV Stick with voice, it sounds like Amazon really just gave it the newest version of their Fire OS and the included the voice remote. Otherwise, I don’t think there is much of an upgrade in terms of specs or hardware. The Fire TV Stick, for those new, is like a Chromecast.

The new Amazon Fire TV is available for pre-order today at $99 and will ship October 5. Amazon is also offering a “Game Edition” version that comes with a new game controller, 32 GB microSD card, and two games: Shovel Knight and Disney’s Ducktales – for $139.99.

The new Fire TV Stick is also available for pre-order today at $49.99, but won’t ship until October 22.

This morning, Amazon announced a new lineup of tablet devices, all set to release at the end of the month. First up, we have the Fire, a $50 tablet that features specs any budget-minded consumer can get behind. The Fire features a 7″ IPS display (1024 x 600), quad-core processor, front and back-facing camera, microSD slot for up to 128GB of storage, access to Amazon Underground, plus a redesigned interface called Bellini.

The Fire can be purchased as a single device, priced at $50 (pre-order starts today), or you can choose to purchase a 6-pack of Fire tablets for under $250. Yeah, you can buy Amazon tablets in bulk now.

For those in need of a bit more computing power, you can pre-order the all-new Fire HD, coming in both an 8″ and 10.1″ model. Each features a quad-core processor, HD display, expandable storage slots for up to 128GB, access to cloud storage, front and back-facing cameras, and an incredibly thin design.

The 8″ model is priced at just $149, while the 10.1″ model is $229.99.

Lastly, we have the all-new Fire Kids Edition. This tablet is specifically designed for the kids in our lives, featuring a sturdy build, preventing the little ones from dropping and breaking it. It also features an IPS display, expandable storage, plus access to Amazon’s complete library of kid-friendly applications. Another perk is Amazon’s “worry-free guarantee,” where Amazon will replace the tablet, no questions asked, for two years if needed. Priced at $99, that’s a solid deal.

Google Now on Tap Arrives in Google App for Marshmallow Preview, Includes Vertical App Drawer for All

Google Now on Tap is here! Well, sort of. If you have a device running the Android 6.0 Marshmallow developer preview 3, you can install the latest version of the Google app (v5.3.19.19) and start to take advantage of its power.

As a recap, Google Now on Tap is a beefed up version of Google Now, that allows you to find out more information about the “people, places, movies, and more” that are on your screen. The idea is that you may be in a conversation or an app with a subject you need to know more about now, yet you don’t want to be taken out of the situation to go find that new info. With Now on Tap, a simple long-press of the home button presents you with relevant cards about the information on your screen. If you want artist info, restaurant menus, movie times, or sports information, you can get that on your screen with the press of a button and without doing much else.

We’ll have a more detailed demo of Now on Tap here shortly and will add it to this post. For now, check out the few screenshots below to get a better understanding of the type of information.

The update also brings the new vertical scrolling app drawer, that was unveiled during the Android M Preview 1 (and then fixed in preview 2), to all devices. I’m a huge fan of it and think you’ll enjoy it as well.
