Swiftkey improves performance with latest keyboard update

Swiftkey announced an update to their Swiftkey Keyboard for Android app to add some performance improvements and even more supported languages. The primary focus of the updated release is on the performance improvements that were pursued based on feedback received from their users.

Swiftkey indicates the updated Keyboard will appear quicker and quit faster. The development team also worked to make it switch between fields a little more quickly and users should find the typing seems to be more responsive.

Along with the performance enhancements, Swiftkey added 12 new languages to serve markets on the Indian sub-continent. The new languages include:

Dish Is Allegedly Playing Dirty At The AWS-3 Spectrum Auction

The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) AWS-3 (Advanced Wireless Services) auction is in full swing and also full of surprises. The AWS-3 auction basically consists of two bands of wireless spectrum. The first is the paired spectrum and the frequencies run from 1755-1780 MHz for the uplink or upload operations and 2155-2180 MHz for the downlink or download operations. The second is the unpaired spectrum with the range of frequencies from 1695-1710 MHz. The reserve price of the FCC for the paired spectrum is $10.7 billion and the reserve price for the unpaired spectrum is $580 million. The reserve price for the paired spectrum has been met and also increased for $310 million by the carriers bidding for the frequencies. The unpaired spectrum wasn’t that lucky as it didn’t even reach the reserve price of $580 million.

The prices for main spectrum continue to rise in the countries metropolitan areas like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Boston Philadelphia and San Francisco. The heaviest bidders so far are allegedly Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US and Dish Networks. It is impossible to absolutely guarantee this statement since the identities of the bidders are confidential. Since all the networks want the paired frequencies so badly it would not be surprising if they end up bidding against one another, by doing that increasing competition and end up paying much more than they originally intended. If all the carriers would want to work together they would already discuss the topic in private and bid on selected subset of frequencies.

It is speculated that Dish is manipulating the system by bidding on the paired spectrum only to gain control over the LightSquared bankruptcy court process because their uplink spectrum is close to the unpaired spectrum and it is worth billions but Dish doesn’t want to pay much more than the $580 million reserve price set by the FCC for the unpaired frequency spectrum ranging from 1695-1710 MHz. If Dish is really playing the game stated above, the FCC is going to receive a lot of criticism and bad press but the longer bidding goes on, the higher the chances for AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile are to catch and beat Dish at its own game. The problem is if carriers even have enough money to keep playing this expensive game for licensing frequency spectrums in such big markets. We’ll see what Dish is really up to when all of the bids are closed and the frequencies sold.

Google Play Music Adds Functionality That Lets You Watch YouTube Videos

The Google Play Music app just got a little better with a new update that Google has implemented within the app. For the past few weeks, Google Play Music All Access users have been saying that a new feature has been popping up in that links them to relevant music videos in the app. While enjoying your favorite music, or just browsing your catalog of songs, the app would display a YouTube icon. While under this test phase the icon would show up either in the center of the screen or in the “now paying bar.” Now it seems that testing is over for this new feature and Google is rolling it out to its users.

According to Google, “Enjoy YouTube videos in Google Play Music! When browsing or playing music, we’ll show you if there is a music video related to your music. [All Access Only] and search correction suggestions.” This new feature that Google has added to Play Music is awesome for the fact that not only can you listen to your favorite music, but now the app will show you the music video as well. What makes things even more great is that you don’t have to leave the app, everything is done right there inside of the Play Music app. It doesn’t get any more simple than that. As noted on Google+, Google Play stated that the new feature will be available in Finland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Ting Rates Among Highest Wireless Providers For Satisfaction In Latest Consumer Reports Survey

If asked the question, “how would you rate your wireless service provider?” what would your answer be? Would you say you absolutely love their service and without question would continue to subscribe to what they offer? Or would you throw them under the bus and air out all the dirty laundry and details about why you can’t wait to switch? However you rate your own service, Consumer Reports has done some research on that very question with a survey that contained some 63,000+ individuals(63,352 to be exact), and has found out which carriers are the most highly rated, as part of their annual cell-phone service ratings. The answer might actually surprise you as to who comes out on top.

My first thought when thinking about a survey like this automatically goes to a company like T-Mobile, and I prefer to think that it’s because I have always had excellent service and customer support and because they’re generally known for being rated quite high in this area. According to Consumer Reports, a relatively new wireless carrier called Ting actually came out on top, and Consumer Cellular wasn’t too far behind. Sprint was unfortunately all the way at the bottom of this particular ratings set, with Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and AT&T all basically tied in the middle. Republic Wireless was also among the top service providers.

As T-Mobile and AT&T continue to advance forward with the technology and plan offerings, they have closed the gap between themselves and Verizon Wireless who had in previous years been at the forefront when it came to overall satisfaction of their subscribers. Unsurprisingly, T-Mobile scored the highest for value between the four major carriers, while Verizon scored high ratings for Voice, 4G LTE reliability, web, and text, or, basically in most areas. AT&T received the highest score for 4G LTE reliability, beating out even Verizon Wireless. It’s hard sometimes to compete with the major players in a game like the wireless industry, but that’s exactly what Republic Wireless, Consumer Cellular, and Ting have been able to do. According to Glenn Derene who is the Electronics Editor for Consumer Reports, “Smaller providers like Ting, Consumer Cellular, and Republic have excellent satisfaction ratings because they’re designing innovative strategies to keep plan costs down for their customers and simplify their service options.” Fast 4G data is great, and 4G data, voice, and text reliability are wonderful attributes, but simple, rudimentary principles like simple plans and low costs seem to really grab customer attention and hold it.

Sprint Updates The Samsung Galaxy S5 To Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat Via OTA

Earlier this morning Sprint began to push out an update to the Samsung Galaxy S5 on their network that saw it moving forward to Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat, bringing in a likely set of bug fixes and improvements along with some software changes, tweaks, and additions of note. Google security patches have been applied along with this update along with International WiFi calling support. Users will also notice a brand new HD Voice icon in their app drawer. Just like with the update to Kit Kat 4.4.4 for the Galaxy Note 3 on AT&T that we mentioned not too long ago, the update started today but it could still be a couple days or more before your own personal device gets the updated software.

If you don’t see the update notification up in your status bar you can always try to force the update to come through manually by checking for software upgrades in settings. The good news here is that Sprint Galaxy S5 owners will be on a newer version of software even if only slightly. The update however isn’t particularly exciting because it doesn’t really bring in a whole lot of new stuff. Some users might find the International WiFi calling support very useful though. With this update jumping into the hands of Sprint subscribers those individuals can now begin to truly look forward to Android 5.0 Lollipop being their next software update, that is if nothing goes wrong with this one and prompts a patch to be sent out to fix an issue.

If you we’re hoping for exciting new features or at least a some swanky new UI changes(even minimal ones)with this update you’ll be a little disappointed, although it should have been expected as it wasn’t a major jump to new software, just a slightly newer build. Motorola Offers Device Repair On The Nexus 6 With Moto Care Package For $129.99

When it comes to protection for your brand new smartphone these days, there’s plenty of options to choose from whether that be a protective case for the device to absorb any shock during drops or any other kinds of damage that could befall your new handset, or whether you might choose to purchase some sort of protection plan through your carrier to get the phone replace in the event that it gets damaged beyond repair and stops working. So no Play Store purchases, no picking the phone up through your local carrier store.

Purchases that have already been made though have to be within a 30 day time window if they want Moto Care. This is pretty standard even for carrier offered protection plans, which are usually a 14 day timeframe to set up any sort of device protection plans so 30 days is actually pretty generous. It hasn’t been long since Sony’s Xperia Z3 was launched, and just like every other handset manufacturer out there, they like to point out the features that they believe are noteworthy. In this case, Sony have put together a great little infographic about the capabilities of the cameras on the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets, as well as some fun little factoids to nibble on.

Christmas is often spent eating turkey with family; swapping gifts and hiding those nasty themed jerseys away in the hopes of re-gifting them to some other poor soul. But with the advent of the smart phone and its built-in camera, taking and sharing photos via social media has become increasingly important. Indeed, just while reading this article, 41,600 images will be uploaded to Instagram. Can you imagine how that figure will increase on Christmas day? We’ve all seen those nasty blurred and illegible pictures that get posted on Facebook, so how can you avoid making the same mistake? Naturally, Sony believe that by using the Xperia Z3 or Z3 Compact, their ability to take great photos even in low-light environments will save the day.

Some of the most popular ‘low-light’ picture moments include the Hindu festival known as Diwali or Festival of Lights, New Years Eve, Halloween and the Berlin Festival of Lights. Using the tap-to-focus feature of your smart phone camera will help to expose the image properly. All very simple sounding tips, but they can and will make a difference to resulting images. Sometimes, it requires rooting your device and hacking at the firmware, which is going to get harder with the introduction of Android 5.0 Lollipop across more and more devices. And sometimes it simply requires installing a third party application from the Google Play Store (it’s just a case of finding it!). This leads me on to Adobe Flash for Mobile, which was officially dropped in June 2012. At that time, out-of-the-box support for the device largely dried up. Android’s default browser supported Flash up until Android 4.4 Kit Kat was released, when Google switched to Chromium for WebView support. WebView is the built-in browser used by the system to navigate to web pages without using your default browser. When WebView was replaced with Chromium, unfortunately this broke support for third party browsers using Flash such as Dolphin and Puffin. The story is the same with Android 5.0 Lollipop; officially, you can’t get Adobe Flash websites to work on Chrome (Firefox, Dolphin or indeed any of the other mainstream browsers).

But we use Android devices, where there is no such statement as, “no sorry, we can’t do that.” Usually, anyway! My readers will be pleased to see that there’s a workaround! Firstly, you need to download the Flashfox browser in the Google Play Store. There are two versions available: a free one, that feels like it has more adverts in it than I have coffees (really?! – Ed). There’s also a pro version, which at $3 is probably worth it because it ditches the adverts. And actually, once you have the Flashfox browser, that’s all you need to benefit from Flash-enabled browsers. Now, as an optional step you might want to download Flashify from the Google Play Store. This is a free application that enables a quick and easy way to send a website to a different browser; Flashify can be paired up with Chrome (if you want this as your default browser) and Flashfox (for your Flash purposes).

This is how I use Flash for mobile these days: I like Chrome’s synchronization between my devices but do occasionally need to dip into Flash. And it illustrates that there’s usually more than one way to do something with an Android device. All it takes is a little bit of ingenuity from a developer, usually somebody who finds the current way of doing things to be compromised, and Android is flexible enough to adapt. Google Play Music All Access Users Now Seeing YouTube Music Key Arrive

The newly redesigned and talked about YouTube Music Key has been in the making for some time. It was first rumored months ago and back in August more details begun to come through, like the name of the service and some of the rumored features. It was expected that the service would not launch for another couple of weeks and then Google surprised everyone by launching the YouTube Music Key last week. That said, it was not a proper launch, but instead the release of a beta version which required users to sign-up and take part in. In terms of the service, Google plan to charge a monthly amount (starting for early adopters) of $7.99 and moving up to (the expected normal) $9.99. Similar to what we saw with Google Play All Access. For that figure, you get unlimited video streaming (with no ads) plus the really sweet ability to view videos offline and music streaming the background.

In spite of the service being launched last week, it was only the beta sign-up that was made available. In terms of the service, it was only as early as yesterday that we began to hear users report that the service was starting to reach users. As an extension of this, we are now hearing reports that All Access users are starting to receive the ability to play videos offline as well as the background streaming feature. Now, if you are an All Access user and shouting at the screen that you don’t have the feature, then you are not alone. The early reports are suggesting only some users are getting the service. In fact, it seems to be a rather random roll-out with some All Access users reporting in the US, UK and Finland while others in the same areas reporting they don’t have it. So it seems to be a bit of luck of the draw.

Anyway, if you are an All Access user and want to see if you have the service then the test is rather simple. This is not determined by an update and instead is being added server side by Google. Simply open your YouTube app. Immediately, you should be presented by a pop-up message letting you know that you have the new features. As a reminder, this means that you will have access to background music streaming which basically means you can swap apps and still have YouTube playing in the background. You will also have the very neat offline playback mode which as the name suggests will allow you to watch content when you don’t have an internet connection. Moto Care Package now available for Nexus 6

Consumers who pick up a new Nexus 6 may be interested in adding some kind of coverage for their new device. Motorola is adding a new option for buyers to consider, but only if the Nexus 6 is purchased through the Motorola web site. A Moto Care package covering the Nexus 6 is now available for $129.99.

Motorola is giving Nexus 6 owners the option of adding Moto Care when they place the initial order or up to 30 days after purchase. This includes early adopters who may have already purchased a Nexus 6 through Motorola.

In addition to requiring owners of the Nexus 6 to have purchased the device through the Motorola web site, another caveat is that the coverage is only good for the first two years of ownership. Otherwise, like most other protection plans this those often available through carriers, the Moto Care package will cover the cost of repair or replacement for damaged devices.

SwiftKey’s 5.10 update is all about speed, percentage breakdown included

An update to SwiftKey in the Google Play Store today is bringing a much needed performance boost to the world’s best prediction keyboard. Back in June SwiftKey went full-on free, dropping their original pricing in favor of an all new theme store hoping to entice buyers looking to customize the look of their keyboard.

At some point during all these updates, SwiftKey’s performance fell to the wayside but today’s update (5.10.60) SwiftKey looks to finally address the lag some of you were experiencing with the keyboard for awhile now.

According to SwiftKey, the keyboard is quicker to launch by as much as 20% faster than previous versions, while closing the keyboard comes in at around 30% faster. More importantly, actual typing has also gotten a boost, with typing up to 18% more responsive than before. Of course, a lot of this is dependent on the hardware capabilities of your device, so your mileage may vary.

In addition to fixing other weirdness (like correction of capitalization), SwiftKey has also made available an additional 12 new Indian languages, including:

• Assamese


• Bengali


• Gujarati


• Kannada


• Malayalam


• Marathi


• Oriya


• Punjabi


• Tamil


• Telugu


• Nepali


• Sinhala

While emoji prediction arrives for 14 additional languages with Bulgarian, Finnish, Romanian and Ukrainian naming a few. It’s a pretty big update, and one that was badly needed. Have to admit, it’s always nice to see the folks at SwiftKey never resting on their laurels, instead continually improving their already phenomenal keyboard app.
