Don’t Miss These Android Stories: March 4, 2016

Another week in the books at DL. Like a few of you out there, we received our Galaxy S7 from T-Mobile this week, so as you may have guessed, we spent plenty of time playing with it and re-familiarizing ourselves with TouchWiz. Sure, we wish this phone had stock Android, but it’s still a fantastic device. Beyond Galaxy S7 fun, we received our first good look at the HTC 10, pondered the future changes in Android N, and celebrated the collaboration between the Amazon Echo and Nest thermostat.

For those possibly hoping to attend Google I/O this year, mark March 8 down on your calendars. That date is when registration opens, and if it’s going to be anything like previous years, getting in won’t be easy. Prepare your credit cards, folks.

If you missed any of it, all of the biggest Android stories are linked below.

Have a great weekend, friends.

Poll: Does Your Phone Have Marshmallow Yet?

According to last month’s Android distribution numbers from Google, only about 1.2% of you are running Android 6.0+ on your phones. With Marshmallow having been out since October, that seems like a pretty low percentage. But then you consider the fact that previews of Android M were available as early as last May and you really have to wonder what the hell all these manufacturers are doing and why they are taking this long to update phones.

Today, we would, in the simplest of ways (a yes or no poll) like to know if your phone is currently running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. You can tell us which phone you own as well, in the comments, if you’d like.

Ready?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

HTC One A9 Won’t Gain Verizon Support After All

When the HTC One A9 was first announced, HTC hoped to gain support for Verizon’s network with a future software update. This was noteworthy, for sure, because the phone was essentially a non-CDMA phone that was going to work on Big Red’s CDMA-heavy network. How was that going to be possible? Well, partly because of the modem included in the phone, but also because it was essentially going to be a LTE-only device.

Unfortunately for unlocked phone hopefuls who were envisioning a future of LTE-only madness on the horizon, we have bad news to report – HTC will not be adding in support for Verizon to the One A9. According to HTC, they tested and tested, but in the end are unable to bring support Big Red’s network.

Here is the official statement:

HTC is committed to providing the best experience for all of our device owners. Following extensive testing, we are unable to support the Verizon network with the Unlocked HTC One A9. For individuals on the Verizon network that ordered the Unlocked HTC One A9 on HTC.com, we will refund his/her order and provide a 20% discount on any current HTC phone or future phones launching through Dec. 31, 2016. Individuals may contact HTC Care at 1-888-216-4736. We regret any inconvenience.

If you placed an order with the intention of hooking up a One A9 to Verizon, you will get a refund and a 20% discount on any current or future HTC phone launching through December 2016.

All of These Top Apps are Under $1 on Google Play Right Now

That deal on Nova Launcher from earlier in the week that we pointed out is apparently part of a much bigger sale going on through Google Play. To celebrate “Play Days,” Google has discounted a whole bunch of top apps to under $1 (read: $0.99) for a limited time. Apps like Nova Launcher ($4.99) are included, but you’ll also find Runtastic’s Road Bike Pro ($4.99), ad-free Weather & Clock Widget ($2.99), FlightTrack 5 ($4.99), Smart Launcher Pro 3 ($2.90), Poweramp Full ($3.99), and Today Calendar Pro ($2.99?).

Yep, this is a deal you probably don’t want to miss out on. Just with the apps I pointed out above you are saving almost $15. And trust me, there are others, including games, music editors, photo editors, camera apps, a PDF scanner, and more.

Verizon’s HTC One M8 Should Get Marshmallow on Monday

On Monday, the HTC One M8 from Verizon should receive an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Both Verizon and HTC’s Mo Versi say so, so hopefully it happens on time and skips the DROID Turbo 2’s confusing path. Not to hijack the M8’s dance party here, but the Turbo 2 Marshmallow update was supposed to start rolling out on March 1, yet we have no confirmed updates from anyone a solid three days later.

Anyways, if the One M8’s Marshmallow update, with Doze, Google Now on Tap, and better volume controls, shows up on March 7, we’ll be sure to let you know.

DEAL: Verizon Fast Charge Bundle Features Samsung Fast Wireless Charger, Battery Pack, Car Charger for $99 ($85 Off)

If you are pre-ordering a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, or you own a Galaxy Note 5, Verizon currently has a fast charging accessory bundle on pre-order that you may want to take a look at. The bundle includes a Samsung fast wireless charger, Samsung 10200mAh battery pack, and a car charger with “fast charge technology” for just $99.99.

I know that $100 for a bundle of accessories doesn’t seem cheap, but when you start to add up the parts individually, you are actually saving quite a bit of cash. The Samsung fast wireless charger is the new version that lays flat or can be propped up as a phone stand and costs $70 by itself. The 10200mAh battery pack is also the newest from Samsung that features fast charging and is $80 by itself. The car charger, well, it appears to be some sort of 3rd party deal that Verizon slapped their logo on. It’ll probably push a fast enough current through your S7, though, assuming it doesn’t blow it up.

Overall, Verizon claims the savings here are around $85. Even if you don’t care about the cheap car charger, you are still saving $50 off the official Samsung products.

This is technically a pre-order for the bundle with shipping happening on or around March 11.

Cheers Evan!

HTC’s Next Flagship Apparently Dubbed “HTC 10,” and Here are a Bunch of Pictures of It

You know how HTC has been teasing their next flagship device on Twitter with a hashtag of #powerof10? I think it’s fair to say that most of us thought that was pointing to the name of the phone being “One M10,” after HTC spent three years going M7, M8, and M9. As it turns out, HTC may drop the “One M” moniker and go with a much simpler “HTC 10,” according to both @onleaks and @evleaks.

HTC dropping the “One M” naming scheme is probably a good idea. For one, it never did really catch on the same way Samsung’s “Galaxy S” naming series has. It always felt like HTC didn’t know what to do to distinguish One phones from one year to the next and so they just tossed the codename for each onto the back-end, sometimes with parenthesis and sometimes without. And second, the “One M” series certainly hasn’t been any sort of success, so now is probably a good time to abandon it.

Alright, so with name potentially out of the way, let’s talk about what the phone looks like. The image at the top of this post arrives courtesy of @evleaks, who seems to be having a friendly “who can reveal more” battle going on at the moment with @onleaks over the HTC 10. The images are official press renders, showing all angles of the phone from front to back, side, and top to bottom. There are no surprises now in terms of the HTC 10’s appearance.

Does it actually look like an iPhone 6, now that it has been fully revealed? I actually don’t really think so. It looks like a new version of their long-standing One M series, only with a home button/fingerprint reader and massive double chamfer. It’s clean, sort of industrial, and not bad looking at all. We aren’t talking ground-breaking new design, but it could be a winner, assuming HTC can figure out how to put a camera in a phone.

Thanks to the image above and the three below (these are from @onleaks), we also now know that the phone will come in silver or black, contain capacitive back and app switcher buttons on each side of the physical home button, a bottom-facing speaker, and USB Type-C port.

htc 10 pictures htc 10 pictures htc 10 pictures

According to @onleaks, a “prototype” of the phone has a 5.15-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB RAM, 12MP camera, and USB Type-C port (pictured). As you can tell from the images, BoomSound is gone and Sense may have a slightly newer design.

Well, then. What are we thinking about this phone now?
