Xiaomi Mi4S 3D Schematics Leak Along With Its Specs ; Xiaomi Sends Out Event Invitations

Xiaomi Mi4S leaked 3D schematics_5

Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, has already announced that the company will launch their new flagship handset on January 15, which is less than a week away. We’ve seen all kinds of leaks when it comes to this device, but we still don’t know if Xiaomi intends to name the device the Mi4S or the Mi5. The company has also teased an extremely light device, which could be less than 5mm thick, sport a 2,000mAh and be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 SoC. Xiaomi might introduce this as a separate device though, its thinness, processor and battery life just don’t add up to a flagship. Anyhow, we have some new Xiaomi info to share with you today.

New alleged Xiaomi Mi4S renders surfaced, the report actually says that someone inside Foxconn (contract manufacturer) leaked these renders, or as the leak says “3D schematic”. You can check out all of these images below this article. As for the device’s specs, it is expected to feature a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 display, 3GB of RAM and 16 or 64GB of internal storage. 16-megapixel rear-facing camera is expected to make an appearance as well as an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper. The general shape of the device resembles the Mi4 and it seems like the power button has been moved to the right side of the device. Volume rocker is located above the power button, also on the right side of the phone, of course.

This is not the only piece of information we get though, some Chinese news sites already received their event invitations. The invitation is rather understated, as you can see in the gallery down below, it’s basically a black piece of thick paper (perhaps cardboard) which says when will this event take place. Xiaomi has previously announced that the event will be held at the National Convention Center in Beijing on January 15. The event will commence at 2PM (local time), and if you’d like to watch it live, you can do that as well.

Xiaomi will announce either the Mi4S or the Mi5 in a couple of days, I thought the Mi5 is on the way, but we’re getting more and more Mi4S leaks lately. All of this is rather confusing, what do you think, which device will Xiaomi launch on January 15?

AH Primetime: Will Samsung’s Tizen OS Fail In The End?

AH Samsung Logo-1

Everyone has heard of Samsung, no matter if you’re young or old. This Korean tech giant has been around for a long time and makes people think of various products, from TVs, refrigerators and microwaves to smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, Samsung has done it all. Samsung wasn’t exactly a big name in the mobile industry before, but with the help of Android they managed to beat out the competition and become the number 1 smartphone manufacturer in the world. The company has been on the rise for a long time, but 2014 wasn’t exactly the best year they ever had. Their profits took a dive and the company is looking for ways to get back on the right path. Samsung’s profit dropped 50% in China, which is their biggest loss this year, but they also took a hit all over the world except for the US.

Samsung’s appetite (or greed, whichever you think fits best) is rather significant, they were doing great with Android as their OS of choice, but they had to include a ton of their services (some of which can be considered bloatware) on their devices, which eventually made them perform poorly, especially the low and mid-range ones. Consumers got fed up with time and I actually blame Samsung’s software offering for their recent profit-related problems, but that’s just me, there are more factors there, I’m sure of that. Anyhow, we all know that Samsung is trying to push its own Linux-based OS out on the market, Tizen OS. This is not Samsung’s first attempt at their own OS though, they already tried to make waves with Bada OS, but that didn’t work out.

The company has delayed the launch of a Tizen-powered smartphone many times thus far and they finally released one during the Tizen Developer Summit in Russia in July 2014. Samsung Z is a mid-range offering, which features a WVGA PLS LCD display along with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. 3-megapixel (no AF) rear-facing and VGA front-facing cameras are also a part of this package, as well as Qualcomm’s dual-core processor manufactured by Spectrum. Samsung has priced this device similarly to the Xiaomi Redmi 1S handset, which offers a lot more punch for the buck.

Samsung really want to push the Tizen OS out on the market, but they’re facing many obstacles which I believe will eventually kill the OS altogether or will keep it running on very few devices, perhaps only wearables. Tizen definitely lacks the integration of popular services and Google and Microsoft (for example) have no intention of providing such services for Samsung. Developers aren’t particularly interested in making apps for Tizen OS either, why would they, they have nobody to sell those apps to. Samsung definitely has the financial power to push Tizen as long as they want, similar to what Microsoft was doing with Windows Phone until it (sort of) took off.

Samsung has a nasty habit of copying other companies services, which turn out mediocre in the end and very few people actually use them. There are a few charts included in the gallery below if you’re interested to take a deeper look at this, but Samsung’s ChatOn and Milk services are not exactly popular, they’re stagnant at best. Some services are used more though, like S Memo and S Voice. Anyhow, take a look at the charts below this article and you’ll get a far better look at what’s going on. Samsung is also missing some services that other companies have (maps and cloud storage service for example), they don’t even have their own versions of those services, so that’s a problem as well.

As I already mentioned, Samsung definitely has the financial power to keep Tizen alive as long as they want, but if they don’t manage to make it grow at a certain rate, I’m sure that the company will kill the OS altogether. In my humble opinion, Samsung could do a lot more by improving their TouchWiz offering than launching a completely “new” OS out on the market. The brand is there, their started improving their hardware offerings, all they have to do now is polish TouchWiz and remove a ton of those bloaty apps / services which they include with their OS and I believe their profits would get back on the right path. What do you think, will Tizen actually take off and become popular or not?

Yotaphone Confirms The Yotaphone 2 Will Be Picked Up By One Of The Four Major U.S. Carriers

Yotaphone 2

If you’re unfamiliar with Yotaphone or its successor the Yotaphone 2, these are definitely devices that you’re going to want to check out. The Yotaphone 2 is unique enough to draw attention and keep it, even if it isn’t packed with the most high end specifications of this year’s flagship devices. It features a dual-screen setup with an LCD screen on one side and a power efficient, low battery consumption e-ink display on the other side, which could be a great solution to a problem many consumers face on a daily basis, battery life. The original Yotaphone never made it officially to U.S. shores, but not too long ago it was stated that the Yotaphone 2 would be be getting an eventual U.S. launch at some point.

Today we’re learning that not only will the Yotaphone 2 be getting launched in the U.S.,(as well as Canada)but it will also be carried by one of the nation’s largest four carriers. No details were given on which one would be grabbing up the device, but if we had to guess our money is on either Verizon or AT&T as they seem to always get a handful of exclusives. It would be nice to see this on T-Mobile though or even better yet, a handful of carriers instead of just one. Word comes from Yotaphone’s Managing Director Matthew Kelley who told Android Central we would see the device hit a U.S. operator.

The device is actually carrying a decent set of specifications, like 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space, but it is running an older version of Android with Kit Kat 4.4.3. The display measures up to a 4.7-inch SuperAMOLED display with a 1080p resolution, which is nothing to shake a stick at. Now that we know the Yotaphone 2 will officially be sold on one of the four major networks, we just have a couple more details to learn about and that’s which carrier will have the pleasure of selling this device, and how much will it cost consumers to buy one after the Yotaphone 2 hits store shelves. Would you consider buying the Yotaphone 2 if it were offered on your carrier’s network?

Google app broken in Spanish-speaking countries after yesterday’s update

Nexus_5_Google_Search_Widget

Yesterday, Google pushed an update to its Android app that would fix bugs and introduce Now Cards. Everything is seemingly working fine in the United States and much of Europe; however, users of the app in Spanish-speaking countries are reporting otherwise. The update effectively disables the cards found in Google Now for those users. It will not push new cards with personalized information and that renders it useless. The purpose of Google Now is to be a personalized hub of information for a user.

Are you experiencing any issues with Google Now? Let us know in the comments.

Rumor: Is Google Looking To Compare Insurance For U.S. Consumers Through Buying CoverHound?

Google logo

Insurance is more than likely not the first thing you think about when you ponder on the whole of Google Inc., but new reports are surfacing that suggest Google could be looking at bringing insurance services into the U.S. market. The details came to light after Forrester and other multiple news media outlets had noticed Google could be looking to bring a service they currently offer in the UK called Google Compare to the U.S., alongside the possibility that they could be looking buy out CoverHound, which is a California based insurance broker and could give Google a way into the insurance market here in the states.

Google Compare is a service they rolled out in Europe in 2012, and helps individuals compare rates and quotes from different insurance agencies to find the best deal. Google does this type of comparative service with other things already, and the fact that it has been comparing insurance rates for people for the past few years would make you think that Google would be ready to offer it’s home country the same type of deal. On the contrary though it has apparently been a little more difficult for Google to get Compare up and running here in the U.S., even though they’re said to be licensed to do business in a number of different states(at least 25 according to Forrester).

Purchasing CoverHound gives them an easy “in” to an industry that they haven’t otherwise been able to gain entry to and with CoverHound having been in business for some time comparing rates themselves, they already have a decent list of customers(insurers)that do business with them so it takes quite a bit of work off of Google’s shoulders to get those companies on board. Forrester also points out that CoverHound and the main Google campus in Mountain View are fairly close to each other, which would make it easy for Google to oversee operations. For now there is no specific detail on if and when we might see Google Compare, or another service like it in the U.S., but this could be a step forward and get them closer to getting things up and running we’d think. This is all speculation at this time so we’ll just have to wait and find out if Google has any plans that fit in with what we’ve heard so far.

Motorola Says They “Could Be” Considering A Higher Level Of Customization Options For Wearables

AH Moto 360-1

One of the very first questions many people were asking when Motorola announced that they would be entering into the smartwatch market with the Moto 360, was whether or not they would be applying the Moto Maker customization options to the watch buying experience upon launch, if at all. While the Moto 360 has been officially launched since the middle of September 2014, there hasn’t been any sort of customization on the same level one can expect when buying a Moto X through the Moto Maker website. Does that mean that Motorola doesn’t have plans to bring something like that to the table? No, of course not. That is still a possibility, and according to Rock Osterloh who when asked by CNET if they would be giving potential Moto 360 buyers a Moto Maker experience anytime in the future, his response was “could be.”

We know that isn’t exactly a definitive yes or no, but it’s better than a no on every level as it still suggests that Motorola may be thinking about it and it’s an option that’s still on the table for them. Following up the statement that Motorola “could be” looking into a Moto 360 Moto Maker option, Osterloh mentioned that they had no major announcements surrounding that level of customization, but that CNET’s intuition was very good, so it’s safe to assume that they do have some customization plans for the Moto 360, or perhaps a successor to the Moto 360 when that time comes.

Whatever Motorola’s plans are for the future of wearables, the two key factors that have set them apart in the smartwatch space, round design, and premium materials like metal and leather are now no longer unique to Motorola. LG’s G Watch R seems to have just as easily captivated the audience of consumers who may have been considering a Moto 360, and that’s just Android Wear. Other smartwatches from different brands like the Apple Watch are offering boatloads of customization options including the use of premium materials. Where Motorola could set themselves apart even further and come out ahead is to offer a level of customization that is hard to rival, and Moto Maker could be a great way for them to do that. Here’s to hoping this becomes a reality.

Yodo1 Games Brings Their Hit Title ‘Crossy Road’ To Android And Google Play

crossy road social gap banner Google Play

Sometimes the simple games are the best. They require a little less devotion and usually never require you to do much reading or become engaged with a complex storyline. Just because a game follows a simple gameplay style does not mean that the game itself will be simple to complete. Enter Crossy Road, a game fashioned after and inspired by the likes of Frogger from old school arcades and the Atari game machine from years past, and even in true retro style as Crossy Road features loveable blocky characters that may or may not remind you a little bit of Minecraft.

Crossy Road has basically one goal, attempt to cross the road filled with loads of traffic all whizzing by with fear of the fact that if you’re not careful, you just might be smashed to bits and have to restart all over again. You also want to try and get as far as you can, so you’ll be continuing to cross roads until you go splat and are hit by the nearest family taking a vacation in the station wagon or a passing semi who could care less for the well being of animals who find their way to the busy highway. There are more than just roads to cross, like raging rivers where your only solace and hope for getting to the other side are floating logs.

There are over 50 total characters to collect and play throughout the game, even the loveable Android Andy Robot is an unlockable and playable character, exclusive to Android of course, and the devs state that there will be more playable characters coming in future updates, so you should have more to look forward to and unlock if you like to take games to full completion that way. Crossy Road even features a special character modeled after YouTube star PewDiePie, called the PewDiePug. Oh Pewds, you’ve managed to find your way into every aspect of our gaming lives somehow. Crossy Road is available to download and install for free, and playing it is also free. You can pick it up from the Play Store link below, and you can check out the trailer as well as some images of the gameplay.
