UberEats Will Soon Bring Food Delivery to a City Near You

According to the Wall Street Journal, Uber is preparing to launch a full-scale food delivery service called UberEats in a number of cities in the coming weeks. If we look at the dedicated UberEats website that already exists and lists out the participating cities, it seems as if Uber is going to expand their current UberEats lunch-time service to include dinner. The WSJ also says that we should expect a dedicated UberEats app.

The hope for Uber is to use the massive amount of drivers they have that take passengers around cities to turn them into food or goods delivery drivers as well. Uber drivers will be able to decide if they want to deliver food or not.

When UberEats fully launches, Uber will expand the hours to 10AM-10PM and hope that deliveries will take place within 30 to 40 minutes. Their systems will attempt to predict when food will be available for pickup before locating a driver that is close by who may want to deliver it. Should multiple UberEats orders come in from a similar restaurant or area, Uber will attempt to bundle orders together for a single driver.

Delivery fees on UberEats will run about $5 in most cities, though they could vary.

The previous UberEats lunch-time service will be re-branded as Instant Delivery and still exist.

At this time, Uber lists Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Washington, DC as UberEats participants. During the full-scale launch, we should see the US cities participate, as well as Toronto, who has been testing it for some time.

How many of you have considered/used a food delivery service?

Poll: Do You Use a Secure Lock Screen?

Earlier today, I caught wind of a recently published report from Duo Labs that talked about the state of Android device security and the usage numbers surrounding things like secure lock screens. The report – which of course is from a security company – claims that about 1 in 3 Android users don’t use a secure lock screen, which is a pretty terrible percentage when you consider that their data showed that only 1 in 20 Apple users go without some form of security up front.

Because I’m always curious how numbers like these compare to the crew here at Droid Life, we thought we would straight up ask you guys. Do you use some form of a secure lock screen?

The stock options in Android are PIN, password, pattern, swipe, and none. The poll below doesn’t include fingerprint unlocking, because well, fingerprint unlocking is a secondary add-on to the lock screen you have to set. We’ll probably do another poll tomorrow asking about fingerprint usage.

So, do you use a secure lock screen?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

AppLock Brings Nexus Imprint Security to Any App of Your Choosing

If you are looking to bolster the security on your Android device, and have a device that features Nexus Imprint (Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P), you can utilize AppLock, an app that will place a fingerprint barrier between the outside world and your precious data.

When installed and enabled, users can go through their entire list of applications on a device, and then choose which apps will be secured using Nexus Imprint. For example, if you want Hangouts, Facebook and Instagram secured, simply enable only those apps. When enabled, and you attempt to open these apps, you will be met by a simple, blue lockscreen. To unlock, place your finger on the fingerprint reader to gain access. This allows you, and only you, to access these applications.

If you plan on using the apps often, and don’t feel like unlocking them each time, you can place a temporary unlock on all apps, meaning the lockscreen won’t pop up each time you open them. Overall, if you have sensitive data on your phone, this app is a great way to help secure that data even if your usual lockscreen is somehow bypassed.

The only downside I see at this time is the non-existence of an in-app purchase to remove the annoying banner ad you see inside of the app and on the lockscreen. It does not impede functionality, but it looks bad. In the future, we hope that the developer will either release a paid version with no ads, or will include an in-app purchase to remove them. Other than that, it works flawlessly for me.

If you have a device that features Nexus Imprint, go check it out.

Here are the New TAG Heuer Connected Ambassador Watch Faces From Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady, and More

At CES, TAG Heuer announced an update to its Connected app on Android that would introduce the first wave of custom watch faces from the company’s ambassadors. Those ambassadors include the likes of Tom Brady, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jeremy Lin, G.E.M., David Guetta, Kai Lenny, Jessica Korda, and more.

Since we happen to have a TAG Heuer Connected in house (our review), we fired up the app to see what was in store. What we found are about what you would expect – a bunch of watch faces from the ambassadors that will please ultra-fans of each, but won’t necessarily work for someone who just wants a clean, no non-sense watch face. Maybe we’ll get more of those in the next update, eh, TAG?

Either way, here they all are.

MetroPCS Looks to Poach Sprint Customers, Offers Up to 50% Off Your Monthly Bill

MetroPCS wants to bring over Sprint’s customers, hoping that half off of their monthly bill will convince them to make the switch. When and if you do make a switch, MetroPCS details that you will get two lines with 2GB of 4G LTE data per line for $50 a month, which includes unlimited data, talk, and text.

The MetroPCS network runs on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE towers, so essentially, you will be making a switch to T-Mobile’s coverage area. This is something to keep in mind if you are currently a customer on Sprint, wanting to make sure that if you do switch, you will have service where you live.

It is noted that the 50% only applies to Sprint customers who are using a two-line + 2GB plan, and not all plans will save you half off of your monthly bill.

All you have to do is switch any current Sprint, Virgin Mobile or Boost number to MetroPCS to save anywhere from 22% to 50% off Sprint’s current Family Share Pack pricing when switching one or two lines. A customer switching one line of Unlimited LTE service would save 22% over Sprint’s current pricing, while a customer with two lines with 2GB of LTE data would save 50%.

This promotion kicks off tomorrow and will run through April 4, 2016.

DEAL: Verizon Hosting BOGO 50% on DROID Turbo 2 and Maxx 2

Verizon kicked off a new deal this morning that includes their newest DROID phones. The deal is a buy one, get one (BOGO) 50% mix-and-match sort of thing, where you could buy the DROID Turbo 2 and get half off another Turbo 2 or the DROID Maxx 2. You could also buy a Maxx 2 and get 50% off another Maxx 2. See, mix-and-match.

The deal requires you to sign-up for a payment plan on each device, from what I can tell. For example, you could lock into a DROID Turbo 2 at $26 per month, then add a second Turbo 2 for just $13 per month. The Maxx 2 is $16 per month at full price and just $8 when coupled in the deal.

We’ve reviewed both the Turbo 2 and Maxx 2, so if you are considering either phone be sure to read those. The Turbo 2 is easily one of our favorites of 2015, thanks to its incredible battery life, great camera, and shatterproof design. The Maxx 2, well, isn’t going to win any awards, but if you need an affordable device that brings Motorola’s style and software to the table, it’s an option.
