Wow, a Crowdfunded Phone That Might Not Suck

Personally, I have a love-hate relationship with sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Oh, wait, it’s only hate. You see, I don’t exactly believe in the idea of crowdfunding. I get that it can be a great thing for a large variety of products, but for smartphones, I have not seen much that would lead me to believe the idea of backing a smartphone, then waiting months to receive it, is a good thing. And since many of the devices don’t get reviewed by the usual tech circles, how am I supposed to know if what I am buying is any good? To keep it short, I have yet to fund a smartphone project through these avenues.

But today, a new device called Robin popped up on Kickstarter, headed by a few familiar faces that I could see myself getting behind and supporting. Created by Nextbit, the Robin looks to reinvent the way we handle storage locally on a smartphone. Instead of relying on microSD slots and set amounts of built-in storage, the Robin utilizes Smart Storage, powered by the cloud.

Internally, the device is something similar to what you would see inside your local carrier store. It features a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage (plus 100GB in the cloud), 5.2″ LCD FHD display, 13MP rear-facing camera, NFC, Bluetooth, LTE connectivity, 2,680 mAh battery, dual front-facing speakers, and runs the latest version of Android. Not only are the specs suitable, but the design is quite gorgeous, coming in either Mint or Midnight.

On the Kickstarter page, the Smart Storage feature is explained rather simply. By learning the way you use your smartphone, Robin is able to free up memory as it sees fit, but if you need something immediately, it is always in the cloud for you to access. This includes apps, photos, and more.

Robin intelligently adapts to your storage needs, and automatically optimizes the space on your phone when it sees you need it. By learning the apps you use and the space you need, Robin offloads the stuff you don’t use to the cloud. So you can have everything you want (in the cloud), and just what you need (on your phone).

I spoke earlier about the faces behind Nextbit and the Robin, so let’s touch on that briefly. Nextbit’s CEO is Tom Moss, once the Head of Business Development and Partnerships for Android at Google until 2010. When it comes to Android, he knows what he is doing. In charge of Robin’s design is none other than Scott Croyle, who is known for designing the One M7 and One M8 while with HTC. Handling CTO duties is Mike Chan, an ex Googler who led power management on Android from the start all the way through version 3.0 (Honeycomb). Between the three, it’s a solid core that has usability, features, and design at the top of the priority list.

If utilizing a smartphone that features fancy new cloud storage interests you, you will be happy to learn that the device is listed at just $349 currently on Kickstarter. There was a $299 option, but all backer positions have been filled. At the time of this writing, Robin is only $50,000 away from meeting their $500,000 goal, with 29 days left to go.

This may be the phone to change my opinion on crowdfunding smartphones.

Here are More Moto 360 (2nd Gen) Renders

Lenovo already told us we should expect to see the new Moto 360 on September 8, but you know, we hate waiting. Thanks to @evleaks, we have another batch of Moto 360 (2nd Gen) press renders to enjoy, this time showing off the elegant Gold and Silver models.

Interestingly, the more I see this device, the more it grows on me. At first, I was unsure about the lugs and adjusted placement of the crown, but it is still a handsome looking smartwatch. Of course, it still features a “flat tire” to house the ambient light sensor, but I don’t mind that too much.

Pretty soon, we will see the complete offerings from Huawei, Motorola, ASUS, and LG in the Android Wear department. Are you leaning towards one in particular at this time?

Have at them.

HTC to Announce a New Device on September 6

Posted onto HTC’s Weibo account, the overseas market may soon have a shiny new smartphone from HTC on September 6. Rumored to be the HTC Aero aka One A9 (the one that looks like an iPhone), the post features a photo of a smartphone, with the words “Meng Yao” on the bottom. When translated, this apparently means “superior handsomeness.”

There are only rumors floating around with regard to possible specifications, and it is also unknown if we should expect to see the One A9 launch in the US. Right now, the device could launch with either a QHD or FHD display, the overseas model could pack a MediaTek processor, 4GB of RAM, and an all-metal body.

September 6 is right around the corner, so we should know soon enough what HTC is up to.

Anyone here hoping we get an HTC iPhone here in the US?

Alto’s Adventure Coming Soon to Android

Announced this morning, Alto’s Adventure, a hit iOS title, is coming to Android “soon.” Looking like a mix of Tiny Wings gameplay and Monument Valley aesthetics, you play as a speeding snowboarder along with friends who collects stars while zooming down hillsides.

While you are boarding, you will jump chasms, rescue runaway llamas, and outsmart mountain elders. From what I see in the YouTube trailer, the game looks like a ton of fun.

On iTunes, the game is priced at $1.99, so we can expect the same for when it comes to Google Play. Sadly, the makers did not give a specific date for when Android folks can head to Google Play to download it, but rest assured, it is soon.

We will let you know as soon as it is available.

Motorola Posts Update on Stagefright Patch Rollout for Moto E

Over on Google+, Motorola’s David Schuster laid out a basic view of what’s going on in the world of Stagefright patch OTAs for the Moto E in the US. According to Schuster, Motorola began pushing out an Android 5.1 update that includes the Stagefright patch for the Moto E (1st Gen) in the US last week, and the same for Brazil.

He also states additional OTA updates and patches will roll out to other devices in Motorola’s lineup, but did not provide specifics at this time. Shuster states, “the recent Stagefright issues resulted in us having to replan and respin a lot of releases.”

As more information is made available, we will keep you posted.

Google Gets a New Logo

Here are a few of the words being thrown around to describe Google’s new logo, introduced this morning. There is colorful, playful, and evolved. Last month, Google announced a major reworking of its core structure, and now, it appears the company is looking to bring forth a new image.

To celebrate the change, Google released the below video, detailing the changes the company’s logo has gone through over the years. Personally, I enjoyed the flat look it had, but I suppose I could get used to this new font.

Share your thoughts below.

Amazon Now Allows for Download of Prime TV Shows and Movies for Offline Viewing

Starting today, users of Amazon Prime can now download Prime Video movies and shows to their Android and iOS devices for offline viewing at no extra charge. The media will be stored locally, perfect for viewing while on a plane ride or while camping in the middle of nowhere.

Unlike Netflix, which only works if you have a data connection, you can now take all of your favorite Prime movies and Prime TV shows wherever you would like. For all of us major media gobblers, this is great news.

Naturally, in order to take advantage of this, you will need to download the Amazon Appstore, followed by the Amazon Video app.

Even with the whole 2-day shipping fiasco, Amazon Prime is still getting better.

Clove UK Expects Moto X Style Inventory by September 21

I know that more than a few of you have been impatiently awaiting the arrival of the Moto X Pure Edition here in the States. In fact, you can include me in that group. This phone, with its reasonable price tag, high-end specs, and fully unlocked self, are quite desirable for a 2015 smartphone.

Motorola told us back when the phone was announced, both as the Pure Edition (for the US) and the Moto X Style (for everywhere else), that it would arrive at some point in September. We thought September 3 might be the day, thanks to a since-deleted Tweet from Motorola, but we are only 2 days from the 3rd and aren’t hearing much out of Motorola’s camp. Are we looking at later in September instead? Possibly.

According to Clove UK, an unlocked phone dealer, September 21 may be a date to set your sights on. They are now selling the Moto X Style in both white and black, and are also expecting inventory to be available by the 21st. Now, there is always a chance that this is a soft date and that Motorola has other, earlier plans, so don’t get too locked into it.

For Moto’s sake, I hope they do it much sooner than later. The iPhones are coming.

Nest Announces 3rd Gen Thermostat With Bigger Display

Remember the Nest Thermostat we showed you last week, with the bigger display, that we called the 3rd gen model? Nest made it official today. Yep, the new Nest 3rd gen Learning Thermostat is real and available today from Nest.

The new device not only has a bigger, sharper display, but it’s also “thinner, sleeker, and more beautiful than ever.” Nest says that the new Thermostat knows when you walk into a room from a distance and will light up to show you the temperature or time or a big clock face. This new feature is called Farsight.

That’s not all, though. The new Nest Thermostat should be more accurate, thanks to more temperature sensors, and better at “learning about your home.”

Ready to upgrade?

Buy it here for $249.

Lenovo Says to Expect the New Moto 360 by September 8

“It’s time,” according to Lenovo. Time for what, you ask? The new Moto 360 (2nd gen) of course.

The image below, which features that opening quote along with an image of the new Moto 360 emerging from water, was posted to Lenovo’s official Weibo account this morning. The image is an event invite with a date of September 8, which we can only assume is the day Lenovo plans to make the new Moto 360 available. Well, there is always a chance that this is when the watch will be unveiled, but we get the feeling it will be official on some level before then.

Keep in mind that this new watch has been spotted numerous times over the past week and was also pegged in a report out of CNET as being a part of this week’s IFA festivities. There is always a chance that Motorola has decided last minute to move away from an IFA debut too.

Either way, we should know something, on some level, about the new Moto 360 within the next 7 days.
