Updated Opera Browser brings new tab management and an important security patch

Opera browser update

As far as updates to Android web browsers go, Opera is currently pushing a pretty good one. A new version of Opera for Android is ready for update, or download a fresh copy from the Google Play store. The update brings a few new items, the best of which include a new UI for switching between tabs and improvements on resuming downloads after pause or crash.

Tap and swipe to manage tabs in the new tab manager, swipe side to side to choose from the open tabs, and simply swipe up to close a tab. The new menu at the bottom is customizable and is designed for easy one handed operation.

Resuming your downloads from pause is not all that new to Opera, but many have been experiencing failures, especially when downloading larger files. Opera made sure to fix the crashes, even when using their data-saving Off-road mode.

Opera browser layout and downloads

Opera is also touting improvements to the flow of their Discover feature, letting you swipe right to get to the next article in the category.

What app update would be complete without some bug and security patches? Opera was previously vulnerable to URL spoofing, to overly simplify it, which has thankfully now been patched.

Aside from a few other stability and UI improvements, like the ability to re-open recently closed tabs, that is about all there is in the changelog. Head on over to the Google Play Store on device to update or grab a fresh copy for yourself.

Are you an Opera user that will benefit from this update? If not, what is your Android browser of choice?

Google Preparing Expansion Of App Discoverability With Listings On Official Chromecast Site

unnamed (2)

Since the Chromecast debuted, Google has had partnered apps featured at chromecast.com/apps. According to a tip we received this evening, though, it looks like Google might be ready to show off third-party apps at the same URL.

The Google Cast Developer console has been updated, allowing users to enter details about their apps for inclusion on the Chromecast site. Google has evidently been sending the following note to developers of "Google Cast Ready apps."

wm_Screenshot 2014-06-18 02.08.11 (1)

The updates to the developer console should feel roughly familiar to those who frequent the Play Store's console - it asks developers for basic information (package name, iTunes ID, or website where appropriate), category, availability, name, and description, and an icon.

New info on LG G Watch shown on Google Play

play_store_germany_lg_g_watch

With Google I/O only a week away, many are excited about Android Wear related announcements. Recent rumors suggest that the LG G Watch will be given away at the event, hinting at an imminent retail availability for the device. Another sign of a retail release has popped up, this time in the form of some G Watch related text popping up on the German version of the Google Play Store.

It seems that there was a slight mixup in the database of the Play Store, and where there’s normally text describing the categories in the Play Store, instead there was briefly text from what appears to be the G Watch’s listing.

The text shows the device as having a 400mAh battery, which confirms recent leaks. While it doesn’t show any pictures of the device, this does suggest that the upcoming device will go on sale soon.

After the folks at TK Tech News put out a $25,000 bounty for anyone willing to leak the upcoming Moto X+1, it seems that bounty has now been claimed. TK Tech News calls the display “amazing” and says it’s noticeably thinner and will feature a micro SD card slot. His sources have also allegedly confirmed a September release date for the Moto X+1, but we’ll see how that all pans out. LG G Watch Gets A Brief Mention On The German Play Store Before Scurrying Away Like A Timid Rodent

gwatch thumb More than a few Android fans are ready and willing to get their smartwatch on with the new Android Wear platform, so some German users must have been excited to see LG's G Watch pop up in the Play Store in Germany. AndroidPit spotted a small section of promo text for the device, and while it didn't include any photos or links and it was quickly removed, it certainly implies that the G Watch will be sold on the Play Store.

Cyanogen Theme Showcase reaches the Google Play Store

oppo n1 cyanogenmod install (8)

CyanogenMod Inc. has been busier than ever, launching you all the latest features and updates, all while trying to bring the OnePlus One to market. One of their latest endeavors is the release of the Cyanogen Theme Showcase app, which will become a great tool for many ROM-flashing fans out there.

The CyanogenMod team has just made their Theme Showcase app live in the Google Play Store, but it’s not exactly for everyone. As expected, the application is only available for CyanogenMod 11 users (including the OnePlus One).

In short, it is an stylish CyanogenMod theme manager and aggregator. You can look through your themes and modify your UI’s aesthetics to your will. What makes this tool special is that you can mix icon packs, fonts, wallpapers, boot animations and more, allowing you to create your own look and feel.

cyanogen-theme-showcase

In addition, it supports icon packs made for Nova, LauncherPro, Trebuchet, ADW and Go Launcher. These are the most popular launchers out there, making Cyanogen Theme showcase one of the best supported app icon managers out there (if not the best).

The only downside right now is the lack of supported themes available, but this should change in the coming months, as more developers start joining the movement. After all, CyanogenMod is the most popular custom ROM out there, and it should have no problem gaining quality support from theme makers.

Google Play Store reviews are putting it out to be an amazing app so far. Those using CyanogenMod can head straight to the Google Play Store and see if their devices are compatible. Support seems to be a bit off right now. Some users report no issues while others simply can’t install the app. Give it a go and tell us your experiences in the comments below!

Documents For A New Unannounced Nvidia Tablet Show Up At The FCC

AH NVIDIA Logo 1.3

Nvidia’s focus on gaming and Auto integration moving forward in the Android and computing space with their graphics rich processors, may be manifesting itself in a new and unannounced tablet that appears to have popped up over at the FCC. Among the many things that Nvidia is working on with mobile and Android, there are rumors of the Nvidia Shield 2 being in the works. They are also continuing to develop and ready their next generation of mobile processors that they unveiled at CES back in January, the Tegra K1 CPU in both 32-bit and 64-bit models. We’ll likely see these processors in a few devices coming up, for the most part though anything carrying these chips will probably be limited to gaming tablets and other gaming handhelds(like the Shield 2 for example).

The FCC documents don’t mention any detail on what type of processor may be on the inside but since it’s being manufactured by Nvidia who also makes the Tegra K1 CPU, we can imagine that something which is barely making the rounds at the FCC has a good chance of coming equipped with a next generation Nvidia chip inside. The tablet in question is labeled as the P1761W, which isn’t much to go off of but that’s OK. This is likely just the internal model number reference. There are a few key details to note but nothing that will give away exactly what we’re looking at, or if it’s something that will actually see mass production and reach store shelves. For now this is just a possible upcoming device from Nvidia but it’s exciting all the same, especially for Nvidia fans.

The tablet is listed with labels for different regions, which suggests that Nvidia is looking at multiple launch locations, and more than likely on a global scale. The labels refer to North America, Europe and International versions. The FCC document does reveal that the tablet device(also referred to in one section as a tablet PC)supports Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and of course features WiFi 802.11n which is in most devices that will need internet connectivity these days. Until we get some more details about this particular tablet device we can only assume at what it might be, and there are two major potential possibilities, which are the second generation of the Tegra Note tablet, or a completely new tablet device from Nvidia we haven’t heard of yet.
