Huawei Quietly Announces MediaPad X2, A Dual-SIM 7" Phablet With A 64-bit Processor

HTC One (M9) Specifications

HTC One M9 Event AH 9

After weeks and weeks of rumors and leaks, HTC has announced the company’s flagship device for 2015, the long-awaited HTC One (M9). We’ve already covered the launch of this handset, and it’s time to take a look at its specifications. The HTC One (M9) certainly looks a lot like the last two generations of HTC flagships, but its specifications are of course improved, and same can be said about the design of the device as well. Anyhow, let’s take a look at the device’s specifications, shall we.

The HTC One (M9) features a 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS LCD display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (21GB user available out of the box). This handset is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chip, the Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994). This is a 64-bit octa-core processor we’re talking about here, and comes with an Adreno 430 GPU for graphics. HTC has included a 2,840mAh battery in this device in order to keep you going at least until the end of the day, and there’s also a microSD slot included with this device which lets you expand the internal memory.

As far as camera sensors go, the One (M9) comes equipped with a 20-megapixel snapper on the back (latest BSI sensor), which is flanked by a dual LED flash. This rear-facing shooter also sports a sapphire glass protection on top of the 20-megapixel sensor. The 4MP UltraPixel camera can be found on the front side of this device (wide angle lens), similar to the one we’ve seen in the last-gen One device, the One (M8). BoomSound is still present and accounted for here, the dual front-facing stereo speakers will make sure you a loud and clean sound output thanks to the Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Bluetooth 4.1 also comes as a part of this package, and the device comes with 4G LTE support (Cat.9).

As far as software goes, the One (M9) comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop pre-installed with HTC’s Sense 7 skin on top of it. HTC also added some improvements to their Sense 7 skin, like the new photo editor they included in there with a ton of options for your photo taking needs. There are of course numerous improvements throughout the OS, most of them courtesy of Android Lollipop itself. The device still sports the unibody metal design like its predecessor, which gives it a sleek look overall.

The HTC One (M9) will be available starting mid-March, and will come in four color options: Silver, Gunmetal Grey, Pink and Gold. That’s it, this is HTC’s new flagship, and its specifications. Let us know what you think of this device, are you happy with its design and specifications, or did you expect something else?

HTC GRIP announced as company’s first fitness tracking device

htc_grip_green

Today, the partnership started between HTC and Under Armour was put on display. The Taiwanese company unveiled the HTC GRIP fitness tracker, the first fitness tracking device to ever be released by HTC. This fitness tracker is powered by Under Armour and mimics many features commonly found on a smartwatch while maintaining the size and comfort of a fitness tracker.

The display offers such a subtle look because HTC uses what they call a “passive matrix-organic LED.” The HTC GRIP’s display shows the time and date while in standby; however, that all changes once the tracking begins.

The HTC GRIP has five sensors to collect data and, yes, a GPS is indeed one of them. The sensors allow the device to have a multi-sport mode to seamlessly understand what activity a user is currently doing. Then, data can be synced with the UA Record platform.

Here is a quote from Drew Bamford, Corporate Vice President of HTC Creative Labs:

“The combination of the world’s premier connected fitness brand with the design expertise of HTC allows us to accelerate our shared goal – improving the way you train, perform and live.”

The HTC GRIP will be available from select retailers in North America starting next month.

HTC and Valve team up to make the HTC Vive, a virtual reality headset

HTC Vive

A lot of what HTC has announced at MWC has been expected, but one thing that wasn’t expected was a virtual reality headset. It makes perfect sense, of course. Everyone from Microsoft to Samsung is getting into the VR game. HTC teamed up with Valve to create their VR headset, and it looks pretty dang cool.

It’s called the “HTC Vive.” It offers a 90Hz refresh rate and they built it to be very light so it can be worn for a long time. It will have a wireless controller that will help you interact and manipulate objects in the virtual reality environment. Valve teased the device last week and said more details will come at GDC, which is also happening this week. Expect to hear more about HTC Vive soon. In the meantime you can check out their awesome website.

HTC Announces The One M9: 5-Inch 1080p Screen, Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM, Sense 7, And A Single 20MP Rear Camera

thumb HTC's One series has kept a consistent design language since its minor re-launch in 2013, and it looks like the Taiwanese manufacturer doesn't intend to mess with a good thing. After several leaks the One M9 (following the M8 and M7) was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this afternoon (or morning, depending on where you're reading this). While HTC has made a few noticeable tweaks to the flagship's design, notably dropping the "ultrapixel" and "Duo" cameras of the first two generations, this is clearly a One device.

The Huawei Watch and MediaPad X2 get officially unvieled

Huawei-Watch-Timeless-Design-Android-Wear

Yesterday news broke about the Huawei Watch, a beautiful Android Wear device from an unlikely manufacturer. Today it has been officially unveiled at MWC, along with a new tablet. The Watch is aluminum, has thin bezels, and no “flat tire.” These things alone would make most Android fans happy, but it gets better.

The Huawei Watch has a 1.4-inch 400×400 AMOLED sapphire crystal display that is scratch-resistant and can be used with gloves or wet hands. It’s 316L corrosive-resistent, and has a beautiful cold-forged stainless steel body. The watch also has a heart-rate montior, barometer, and 6-axis sensor to track fitness activities. It will launch “mid-2014″ in gold, stainless, and black.

mediapad-x2

The Huawei MediaPad X2 is a 7-inch tablet with cellular data connectivity. It looks like a stretched out version of something from HTC. The 7-inch display is 1080p, and it has a 2GHz Kirin ultra-octa chipset, 13MP camera, 5,000 mAh battery, and Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. It will be available in 2GB and 3GB of RAM versions later this year.

What do you think of these great devices by Huawei? Do they have enough to compete with the likes of Samsung, HTC, and LG here in the U.S.?

MediaTek Announces $300 Million Investment Fund for Startups

AH Mediatek Logo 1.5

MediaTek was founded in 1997 and has grown to become the fourth largest integrated circuit manufacturer in the world, although their early business was designing chipsets for optical drives, DVD players and digital televisions. However, their mobile devices division was launched in 2004. MediaTek are something of an industry enabler because they can provide a reference design for a manufacturer, which allows companies to very quickly and cheaply design a smartphone based around a MediaTek product. This time last year, MediaTek announced a new brand of “Everyday Genius” with a vision to make smartphones more accessible and affordable to the wider market. We’ve subsequently seen MediaTek powering the Android One smartphones for developing markets.

Along with MediaTek’s new product offerings, today they have announced the launch of a new strategic investment arm within the company called MediaTek Ventures. This investment arm will be headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan and will be seeded with $300 million to invest in start up businesses in Great China, Europe, Japan and North America. The objective of MediaTek Ventures is to invest into innovative startup businesses in the semiconductor, system, devices, Internet infrastructure and Internet of Things sectors. MediaTek is aiming to create a collaborative ecosystem based around their corporate objectives in the communication, computing, online media and analytics fields: in other words, MediaTek Ventures is designed to fit alongside “Everyday Genius” and making modern technology available for all.

MediaTek’s Chief Financial Officer, David Ku, had this to say about MediaTek Ventures: “We will not constrain ourselves to any single region in pursuit of innovation and excellence. Through MediaTek Ventures, a new generation of world-class companies will be empowered. We are excited to enable entrepreneurs and start-ups in achieving their dreams and fostering companies that have the potential to create value to end-users around the world and solve the world’s biggest problems.” The new investment company will include all states of funding for start up businesses and ultimately will help the wider business maintain its seventeen year track record of bringing innovation to the value end of the market, which follows MediaTek’s statement that they have “…an emphasis on enabling technology for the masses and not the chosen…”

At this juncture, comparatively little is known of MediaTek Venture’s investment strategy and roadmaps (these will be made available in the second half of the year), but we’ll keep you in the loop. Meanwhile, if you have a business that you believe MediaTek Ventures would be interested, you can drop them an email at ventures@mediatek.com or visit their website here.

When not being worn in the ear, Huawei equipped the TalkBand N1 with magnetic earbuds that will stick together so the device can be worn as a necklace. Huawei Officially Announces Huawei Watch and TalkBand B2, N1 At Mobile World Congress

nexus2cee_watch.png

If you measure the success of a product release by the element of surprise, Huawei might not score too well. We found official product videos for the new Huawei Watch yesterday, ahead of today's announcement. Huawei's TalkBand devices showed up in ads days ago and in their own wearables app yesterday. If you measure its success by how much attention and anticipation it generates, you might say that Huawei's new wearables have had a smashingly successful release, especially considering their absence from many Western markets until now.
