Moto X (1st Gen) Could Get Lollipop Update in Next “Few Weeks”

Because the level of anger over the lack of a Lollipop update for the Moto X (1st gen) has risen substantially within recent weeks, Motorola’s David Schuster took to Google+ today to talk about the status of everything.

According to Schuster, they have seen a “lack of support” from some of their partners, thus the reason things have taken so long. “Partners” is a pretty generic term, so that could mean anyone from chipset makers (like Qualcomm) to their various carrier partners who need to approve updates before they can be pushed out.

Speaking of pushing out an update, Schuster also mentioned that they are starting a “TestDrive” of the update to the 1st gen Moto X in both the US and Latin America. If things go well there, that could mean “full deployments in a few weeks.”

Here is his full post:

I know that a lot of people have been asking about the status of the Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop upgrade. I can see the frustration and in some cases the anger about how long it has taken to get the upgrade deployed. It has been a struggle due to the lack of support from some of our partners but  I am glad to announce that we are starting TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well we should start full deployments in a few weeks.

Not exactly, “Your update is coming tomorrow!” but at least it’s an update on the status of the situation.

LG G4 Now, Miraculously Supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0

The day that LG announced the G4, we reached out to their PR team to get confirmation on whether or not the phone supported Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology. There were mixed reports floating around on G4 unveiling day, so we wanted to get official word. LG told us that it most definitely did not support Quick Charge 2.0. Instead, they were excited to talk about the phone’s semi-quick charge 1.8 capabilities.

Today, they have apparently switched stances and are now telling outlets that the phone does indeed support Quick Charge 2.0. LG hasn’t confirmed to us, but again, they are apparently telling this to others. Qualcomm has also added a reference to Quick Charge 2.0 being included in the G4 on the G4’s product page.

Who knows why they were hiding this fact initially. Maybe they were more interested in getting you to pad their numbers by buying replacement batteries instead of Quick Charge 2.0 adapters. I don’t know, but what we do know is that the phone does support the tech and in the end, that’s a good thing for all of us. Quick Charge 2.0 and Fast Charging are amazing.

So there you have it – the LG G4 does have a feature that we called “the future.”

Lollipop-Less DROID Turbo Drops to $499 at Verizon

Verizon dropped the price of the Lollipop-less DROID Turbo this week to $499 off-contract for the 32GB model. If you need more storage than that or want some ballistic nylon in your life, the 64GB is also newly discounted to $549.

At that price, you are looking at what should be one of the better deals in tech. The DROID Turbo is a fantastic phone on almost all levels. Unfortunately, we have seen an incredibly slow rollout of its Android 5.1 Lollipop update (read: it has yet to begin), so many of its most loyal followers have been vocal recently over their disappointment in the support it has seen. This is supposed to be Verizon’s flagship Android phone, yet it often feels ignored.

Still, once it gets Lollipop, this phone will once again be a heck of a phone, only made better by price cuts like this.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to read our DROID Turbo review.

AT&T GoPhone Plans Get Rollover Data Too

Because AT&T wants to “thank” its GoPhone customers, the wireless carrier is adding Rollover Data to its $45 and $60 prepaid plans starting May 15 at no extra charge. The new feature is available automatically to both new and current GoPhone customers.

With Rollover Data, customers get to use unused high-speed data from the previous billing cycle during their current billing cycle. Say you pay for the 4GB $60 plan and only use 2GB this month, then next month you would have 4GB to use, plus an additional 2GB of Rollover Data available at full 4G LTE speeds.

Keep in mind that RollOver Data on AT&T only carries over to the next month and then disappears if unused. In other words, you can’t bank months and months worth of data, then go H.A.M. on it later down the road with a big 12GB month. Still, extra data on the next month at no added charge is a bonus. Thanks, AT&T.

HTC May Look to Monetize BlinkFeed With Sponsored Apps and Promotions

According to tweet from @upleaks, along with alleged photo evidence, HTC may soon infuse sponsored apps and HTC promotions directly into BlinkFeed, making it the newest possible source of income for the company.

In the photo that was posted online, two screenshots are shown with what end users may see when HTC updates the social network feed service. At the top of the Highlights section, which usually shows trending news and information, HTC will place sponsored ads, such as Clash of Clans, right on top for all users to see. In addition, when not showing ads for apps, HTC will promote its own products, like the RE Camera.

As of right now, BlinkFeed is used to show Facebook posts, tweets, top news, and other social happenings from around the globe. If implemented, this would be HTC’s first attempt to make actual money from the service, which could lead to a bad taste in the mouth of users. It is unknown at this time if users will be able to disable the ads and promotions.

Personally, this move by HTC would not shock me. One M9 owners already receive “suggested” app downloads via the Smart home screen widget, so it could be likely HTC does not stop at just BlinkFeed.

To HTC users, do you use BlinkFeed? Would this turn you off from the service?

You Can Now Pre-Register for Soon-To-Be-Released Apps on Google Play

As of the end of last week, Google opened up a new way for developers to hypebeast their upcoming app releases through Google Play. As you can see in the images here, Google is allowing select publishers to put their apps up for pre-registration, so that interested fans can be notified the minute they are released.

The first app to do pre-registration appears to be Terminator Genisys: Revolution, from Glu Mobile. A simple click on the “Pre-register” button brings up a window confirming to you that a notification will be sent when the title finally is available. You can unregister as well, assuming you are no longer interested in the app or game.

While a handy feature, we’ll have to wait and see if developers adopt pre-registration or if it becomes a rarely used feature. I would love to be notified of upcoming games or apps that interest me. If anything, this would provide an extra level of promotion.

You Can Now Root Almost All Galaxy S6 Variants With This 1-Click Method, KNOX Not Tripped

Over the weekend, the Keen team released PingPong Root, which is a 1-click root app for a number of Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge variants. Even AT&T and Verizon models are included. But maybe more importantly, this root method doesn’t trip Samsung’s KNOX, so things like Samsung Pay (once it goes live) and other security-related features should still work afterwards.

If you are at all interested in rooting your Galaxy S6 or Edge, this method is probably your best option at the moment. All you need to do is follow a handful of simple steps, which basically involve downloading an .apk file, installing it, and then telling it to root your phone. There are another couple of simple steps in there that you will find in the video we included below.

To get to rooting, head over to this XDA thread.

Cheers Joey!
