Snoozing Items in Inbox is Now More Convenient Than Ever

Google has become really good at keeping track of and highlighting important emails in Inbox that have to do with reservations (flight, hotel, restaurant, etc.), calendar invites, and package tracking updates. These types of emails show up with imagery and shortcuts to accessing the information you care most about, like full trip bundles.

But what if you wanted all of that automation to continue, along with a bit of added, precision control on your end? Let’s say, instead of wanting to dig through a bundle or search for package tracking, you could tell the package tracking email or hotel reservation to appear automatically, just as you need it? Starting today, you can.

Through the latest version of Inbox, you can swipe left to snooze select emails and quickly tell them to snooze to much more convenient times. For example, restaurant reservations can be told to snooze until an hour before your dinner. Your flight reservations will see an option to snooze until the day before you board the plane. Your hotel reservations can be snoozed until the day you check-in. That way, those important emails re-appear at the top of your inbox just in time.

The new snooze options show in the snooze pop-up box for the following types of emails:

  • Package tracking updates
  • Restaurant and event reservations
  • Calendar invites
  • Flight confirmations
  • Hotel reservations
  • Rental car reservations

And this is what the action looks like.

Moov Now Fitness Tracker Announced With 6-Month Battery Life, Only $60 for Limited Time

Back in early 2014, we got our first look at the original Moov. It’s a simple, yet powerful device, designed to track your every move, and make you better at fitness in general. Now, we have a new Moov, called Moov Now. This little wearable is smaller than the original, featuring a battery said to last 6 months. Yes, that’s half a year.

The Moov Now is able to track everything the previous model could, including cycling, boxing and swimming, but is now also able to track your sleep and daily activity. This includes walking and things of a not-so-athletic nature. Of course, Moov Now is linked up via a smartphone application, available for both Android and iOS devices.

For a limited time, you can pick up Moov Now for just $60 through the company’s dedicated pre-order page. If tracking fitness is your thing, this could be a great little gadget.

Question of the Day: Uncommon Apps You Use Regularly That Might Surprise Someone?

Forget all of the Google apps you use all day every day. Forget Instagram, Facebook, Hulu, the official Twitter app, ESPN, and Netflix. In today’s question of the day, we want to know about all of the other apps you use on a regular basis – the uncommon apps, the third party alternatives, and those that may surprise someone.

It could be a mail alternative like Mailbox because you don’t like Gmail. Or maybe you hate Google Photos, so you use QuickPic. Since the official Twitter app is a confusing pile of meh, I can imagine that plenty of you use a Twitter alternative – which one do you use? Is there a particular file manager that you have settled into? What about a fitness tracker?

To help kick it off, here are a few of the uncommon apps I use regularly.

  • Diaro:  This is a fantastic cross-platform journaling app that may have a silly name, but makes up for it by having a modern UI, web access, syncing, and the ability to attach multiple photos to an entry. I don’t know why every single journaling app decided that people would only want one photo attached to an entry, but it’s the most ridiculous limitation I’ve ever seen. I ditched them all a year ago for Diaro because of that simple functionality and never looked back.
  • Sunrise:  Of course, Microsoft owns this company now, but before that happened, I had fully committed to Sunrise as my calendar of choice. The UI can be a little wonky at times, but I love it because I can attach all sorts of other apps to it. For example, I get invited to all sorts of events through Facebook, yet I don’t use Facebook. Those event invitations show up in my Sunrise calendar, where I can respond without having to open Facebook. It also tracks my favorite artists and when they are playing in Portland through a Songkick integration and even gives me the Portland Timbers calendar. Like Diaro, it also has great cross-platform action.
  • Others I’ve mentioned before:  Cabinet Beta as my go-to file manager, Fenix as my Twitter app, Plex as my media manager, and UP as my fitness platform of choice.

Your turn – give us a couple of potentially uncommon apps that you use regularly.

US Cellular Will Beat Your Verizon or AT&T Contract Price or Give You $50

US Cellular is feeling confident in their offerings to mobile customers, now guaranteeing that they can beat the prices of both Verizon and AT&T. If they can’t, you will receive a $50 promotional card to spend however you see fit.

To get started, all you need to do is bring in your wireless bill to a US Cellular shop, and they will take care of the rest. If you end up switching from either AT&T or Verizon to a Shared Connect plan with Installment Pricing and Device Protection, US Cellular will pick up the cost 100%.

This deal is available to personal customers and businesses, with well qualified buyers only paying taxes at the point of sale. Following that initial cost, $20 a month for your new smartphone will be tacked onto your monthly bill. All of this, of course, is dependent on you porting your existing number from either Verizon or AT&T. But again, if US Cellular can’t match their price, you get $50.

If you are currently unhappy with your wireless provider, check it out.

Report: Apple and Samsung May Help Mobile Industry Kill the SIM Card

A report out of the Financial Times suggests that the GSMA, an organization representing the “interests of mobile operators worldwide,” is in “advanced talks” with Apple and Samsung to potentially help make an electronic/embedded SIM the standard for mobile phones, including smartphones. The idea behind an E-SIM is that it would act as an embedded SIM in phones, leaving you open to freely connect to carriers of choice without the hassle that is typically associated with signing up for new wireless service.

With an embedded SIM, switching to a new wireless carrier or signing up for service with a new phone wouldn’t require that you seek out a new SIM card for that particular carrier. Instead, you would have a SIM embedded inside the phone that is capable of connecting to a variety of wireless partners. It may also make it easier to switch between carriers and their plans while avoiding contracts.

If you have owned an unlocked phone at any point in your life and tested it on more than one carrier, you know how frustrating and/or time consuming the process of switching can be, largely in part to the difficulty it can be to secure a new SIM card.

Apple currently places specially designed SIM cards in some of their iPad models that allow customers to switch between a couple of carriers without the need to swap SIMs. This isn’t exactly an embedded SIM, but the idea is similar.

Keep in mind that even if the industry moves towards adopting an embedded SIM, it could take years before your next phone includes one. Not only do carriers have to sign off on it, but so do manufacturers. Still, having Apple and Samsung on board is a big step in the right direction. Today’s report also mentions that networks like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone are on board.

Marshall Announces Its Own Smartphone Called London, Pre-Order Up for Under $600

Marshall, notably known in the music world for producing high-grade audio equipment, is releasing its very own Android smartphone. Focusing on their love for audio, the London device features somewhat mid-range specs when compared to flagship models of 2015. Inside, a Snapdragon 410 processor and 2GB of RAM will power your apps and games, while a 4.7″ HD display sits on the frontside.

London also features two front-facing speakers, an ‘M’ button on its topside for quick access to your locally stored music files, dual headphone jacks for jamming out with your partner in crime, and a scroll wheel for precision volume control. As a note, each headphone jack has its own independent volume control, just in case not both of you want to go deaf listening to a bit of Cannibal Corpse. London is juiced by a removable 2,500mAh battery, and does feature expandable storage via microSD card slot.

Much like Sony did with its Walkman device that costs over $1,000, Marshall has built in special audio processing technology, hoping the true audiophile consumers out there can appreciate their music while on the go. This tech includes a highly upgraded Wolfson soundcard, global equalizer, and Bluetooth aptX audio. All this runs on top of Android 5.0.2.

The London is available for pre-order right now on Marshall’s website. When the price is converted to US dollars, it comes to a little under $600. For a prestigious name like Marshall, that does not seem all that bad. Everything I have owned from the company, including half cabs, full 4×12 cabinets, and headphones have all featured amazing quality. It’s safe to assume their smartphone will also be built with this attention to detail.

According to Marshall’s site, orders are expected to ship in mid-August, and as a free gift, a pair of Monitor headphones are included with your purchase. For those curious, the Monitor headphones are the pair I use during The DL Show, and whenever I go out and walk my dogs. I enjoy them very much.

Here are (Supposed) Fresh Photos of the 3rd Gen Moto X and Moto G

Now that Motorola has set July 28 as the day they plan to break up the relationship between you and your current phone, don’t be surprised if a wave of leaks crashes down onto the interwebs, revealing bits and pieces of their plans. We would be shocked if a new Moto G (3rd gen) isn’t on hand, but are also crossing fingers over the idea that a new Moto X (3rd gen) could join the party as well. While nothing is confirmed, a fresh set of pictures that are allegedly of each device popped up last night to kickstart the fun.

Over on G+, a Brazilian user by the name of Roger Pretto, who claims to work for Lenovo, posted a picture of a device that he referred to as the “Moto X 2015.” He also mentioned that this phone’s camera and battery “had a top upgrade.” The device can be seen below.

Look familiar? Yep, it looks just like a couple of the phone back plates we saw earlier in the week, though previous reports indicated that this backside design might be reserved for a new DROID.

moto x 3rd gen 2015

I’ve got to admit that this whole situation is quite confusing. This phone looks like a mash-up of two of the backsides we saw previously. It looks like a mix of one of the supposed DROID phones and the new Moto X. I’m seeing the elongated camera and dimple housing from the supposed new Moto X, but the frame and shape of what we thought was a new DROID.

Also, is that a removable back? And is it just me or does this look exactly like a Galaxy Nexus?

On a related note, Mexican site Xataka posted a series of images that are said to be of the new Moto G (3rd gen). The photos look a lot like previous leaks, plus show an About screen with model number XT1542 and the name “Moto G.” Since this isn’t a Moto G that has been officially announced by Motorola, I think it’s safe to say that this could very well be the 3rd gen model.

650_1200 650_1200 (2) 650_1200 (3)

This new Moto G (3rd gen) is thought to sport a 5-inch 720p display, 13MP rear camera, Snapdragon 410 processor, 8GB or 16GB storage, 2470mAh battery, and be waterproof.

Looking forward to July 28?

AT&T HTC One M9 Android 5.1 Now Available for Download

The One M9 from HTC on AT&T is receiving an update to Android 5.1 this morning, just as HTC’s Mo Versi said it would. Although, he did say this would happen yesterday, but hey, as long as it’s here now.

Inside, Android 5.1 brings plenty of bug fixes, but also on the changelog is Android Factory Reset Protection, plus performance improvements. Versi also stated this update includes camera enhancements, which is always a good thing.

The update size is listed at just under 1GB, so make sure you have WiFi on and functional.

To download, head on into the Settings menu of your device, then select About Phone. There, you should see Updates. Or, wait for the OTA update notification to hit your phone.

HTC Loses Grip on Original Fitness Band, has Other Fitness Goals in Mind for Later This Year

Earlier this week, we uncovered a Bluetooth SIG listing for an HTC fitness product of some sort that may have been their now-delayed Grip fitness band. We took that as a sign of it still launching after missing its original Spring release, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter. HTC is apparently going to unleash an entire product portfolio for health and fitness later on in 2015 and the Grip as we knew it is history.

According to a statement sent to Engadget, HTC says that it has “decided to align Grip” with that previously mentioned product portfolio that will arrive “later this year.” They didn’t say what that product portfolio would include, but I would imagine there will be some form of a fitness tracker.

Maybe we should play a game of “Which random product categories or health gadgets can HTC get into between now and the end of 2015?” To round out a fitness portfolio, I’m thinking a WiFi scale and some all-metal sweats, with built-in BoomSound Bluetooth pockets and an “HTC” black bar running down each leg. They should also release a bike. Who wouldn’t want an HTC bike? I’d also like to see an HTC refrigerator that has an embedded scrolling BlinkFeed screen with the latests ads deals on fresh produce (opt-out, of course).

What else…

OnePlus 2 Invite System Should be Less of a Disaster This Time

The original OnePlus One is without a doubt one of my favorite phones of all time (review). It was so good last year, that it made it into our top 5 phones of 2014 list. The phone had class-leading battery life, an insanely low price point for the specs it delivered, a powerful CyanogenMod skin, and one of the most unique textures ever applied to a phone, one that I wish others would copy. Because of the impression left on my mobile mind from the OnePlus One, I’m generally super excited to take the new OnePlus 2 for a spin.

Of course, when you are talking OnePlus and buying phones, you have to consider the idea that you may not just be able to turn around and buy one the day they launch. We know that OnePlus is bringing back an invite system for the OnePlus 2, but in a blog post today, the company has announced changes that they hope will make it easier than ever to navigate.

According to OnePlus, there are a number of changes to the invite system this time around. First, the company has more confidence than ever in their products, which means they should have 30-50x more inventory at launch than last year. We aren’t sure what that launch number was, but if we are talking 30×10,000, this is a significant increase.

Invites are still going to be a part of the process, along with invites that you can share with your friends. OnePlus says that these sharable invites will arrive much faster this time around, so that you and your friends can take advantage.

Finally, for those who miss out on the initial launch, don’t have friends with invites, or would rather not spend your days on OnePlus’ forums or social media channels, OnePlus says there will be a reservation list that you can add your name to. All you will have to do is add your name to the list, then sit back and wait for an invite to arrive. They are going to prioritize their “early forum supporters” in this list.

These changes all sound good on paper, but I think the big key is for OnePlus to have enough at launch. Once that launch happens with 30-50x the inventory of last year, it could make invites much more easy to come by.

Samsung Pay Trial Kicks Off in Korea in Preparation for Full Rollout

Samsung Pay, arguably one of the most noteworthy features of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge because of its ability to make payments at both NFC and traditional credit card terminals, is getting ready for prime time. Samsung kicked off a trial for select customers in Korea yesterday in preparation for the payment service’s full rollout to countries like the US.

When the S6 and S6 Edge were announced, the early word was that Samsung would try to launch Samsung Pay in July (which technically they have done). Rumors since have suggested that Samsung pushed back Pay’s rollout to September as an opportunity to pair it with the launch of the Galaxy Note 5. September made sense if there was going to be a delay, since Samsung often debuts their new Note device for the year in early September. With that said, new rumors have hinted at a possible mid-August unveiling for the Note 5, so that Samsung can get its new Note out before Apple has a chance to announced new iPhones for the year.

If Samsung is opening up a trial for Samsung Pay right now and they actually have moved up the launch of the Note 5, maybe August is a more likely timeframe for access to Pay on your Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

HBO Now Available Today on Android and Amazon Fire Devices

HBO NOW, HBO’s internet-only service that doesn’t require a cable subscription, arrives on Android and Amazon Fire tablets starting today. That’s not all, though. If you download the app to your phone or tablet, HBO is tossing in a free 30-day introductory trial of HBO Now that can be accessed through Google Play or the Amazon Appstore.

As a recap, HBO NOW allows you to subscribe to HBO without needing to also have a regular cable subscription. For $14.99 per month, you can access all of HBO while ditching Comcast or any other cable subscriber. The service can be accessed via computer, but also via Apple and Android devices.

Chromecast (or Google-Cast), Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Fire TV Stick will get access “soon.”

The app doesn’t appear to be live yet on Google Play, but you can sign-up for HBO NOW here.

Google Clock Update Brings Darker Blues, Brighter Reds

The Google Clock, which just recently decoupled itself from stock Android to nestle-in to the Play store, received an update this week that introduced “more neutral colors.” I’d call them dark blue and bright as hell red, but neutral works too, I guess. Below, you can see the differences between the new and old colors.

Along with the new color scheme, Google fixed a “duplicate provider installation” issue and another that involved the timer button.

The update drops in as v4.0.2. The update should be live now for all to download.

Motorola Hosting Event July 28, Says “Your Relationship Status is About to Change”

This little event invite just showed up in our inbox from our friends at Motorola. It looks like the Lenovo owned company out of Chicago has something to announce on July 28 in NYC.

The invite says specifically that “Your relationship status is about to change,” followed by an “XOX, Moto.” Is that a hint at a new Moto X? Seems a bit early for Motorola to be announcing a new Moto X. Maybe a Moto G? Maybe a new Moto 360?

The last two years, Motorola gave us its next flagship towards the end of August or early September, so again, this all seems a bit early.

Thoughts?
